genres: Is there a longevity to these games or will gamers demand more
flexibility?

Sandbox online games/ MMOs such as Minecraft or WoW: We know they
are highly sucessful, but will they become too boiled down (rinse and
Here it is, Comicaze episode 3. Much like episode one and unlike episode 2, it is actually listenable. Episode 2, much like Star War, shall be forever put out of our minds.

This is a great piece of entertainment and I hope you enjoy the discussions about the rumors, reviews, opinions etc, all related to comic books or other nerd related topics. Thanks for listening!
Extra Life is a video game fundraiser that supports the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals around the United States. Gamers around the world will take one day (literally) out of their lives to play video games. For each hour played, gamers can ask donators to donate at least $1 per hour (total of $24). So how do you get involved?

In previous years, Extra Life had benefited a single Children's Miracle Network Hospital in Texas. But as the phenomenon grew, Extra Life has now branched off to help hospitals near you. Here's a breakdown of how fast Extra Life has exploded onto the scene.

2008 - $121,000 - 1,165 gamers
2009 - $170,000 - 1,654 gamers
2010 - $465,000 - 3,299 gamers
2011 - $1,108,224 - 13,596 gamers

That's over a million dollars raised for charity. So that's the why, here's the when, where, and how?
Also I'll give my opinion on the winners and losers of E3. Feel free to leave a comment with your opinions.
Sony's press conference was average at best this year. They were able to beat the expectation of a Vita filled conference by showing off some first party developer games. God of War Ascension and The Last of Us blew me away. In addition, 3eyond was very impressive. However, the wonderbook was a horrible waste of time. Not only did the demonstration lag on for what seems like forever, it didn't work. Participants were struggling trying to cast spells during the demo and it was just overall disappointing. Overall the conference was "meh" and there was much that could have been improved.

Nintendo's press conference was overall fairly unimpressive. Announcements like Pikmen 3 and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance were awesome to see, but too much emphasis was put on establishing the Wii U. I think it may be the fact that the Wii U is nothing special.

To put E3 into an overall look, it wasn't as impressive as last year. Maybe it was due to the expectation that a new console would possibly be unveiled, or maybe there weren't as many games revealed that we didn't know about.

For winners the third part conferences won. EA with Dead Space 3, Medal of Honor: Warfighter and the assortment of EA Sports games was the best conference of E3. Ubisoft, would have won with Watch Dogs and AC3, if not for the annoying hosts. As for the big three, Sony had to win due their assortment of first party titles. The losers had to be Sony's Wonderbook and Microsoft's lack of first party titles. Wonderbook was a mess and Microsoft's press conference could have been renamed to "multi-platform" conference. Also Nintendo's presence was almost nonexistent which, for me, makes it the lowest ranked conference of E3.

Ranking of Conferences:
EA>Sony>Ubisoft>Microsoft>Nintendo

E3 Review - Ubisoft Press Conference

For the past few years, Ubisoft has had some of the most ridiculous and outrageous press conferences of all time. From celebrity host like Joel Mchale -who tried his hardest to be enthusiastic about the crap games- to Mr. Caffine -who did nothing but make us want to tear our hair out- Ubisoft has had trouble convincing gamers that they are a serious game developer. With the new Assassin's Creed, Far Cry 3, and Splinter Cell hyping gamers, I was hoping that they would finally get their act together.

Sadly, Ubisoft continued their shenanigans introducing the show with a Flo Rida conncert for Just Dance 4, and presenting two of the most awkward hosts, actress/comedian Aisha Tyler and actor/comedian Toby Turner. The banter between the two hosts was painful to watch/listen and I almost had to stop watching the conference just to get a moment away from them. However, with hopes of seeing some AC3 gameplay, I endured the torture and completed the conference.

After the awkwardly horrible introduction, we were delighted to see some Far Cry 3 action. Far Cry 3 featured some nudity, bows and arrows, explosions, killer tigers, and psychedelic, tripping out moments (something all games need huh?). The gameplay was intense and showed that this game could have potential of being a great game. I am not too familiar with the Far Cry franchise, but from what I have seen it has been impressive

Following more awkward moments from our beloved hosts, Splinter Cell: Blacklist and Marvel: The Avengers Battle for Earth featured unique trailers that teased the audience. The Blacklist trailer was very impressive, showing some cool gadgets and some badass gunfighting. As for the Avengers game, it didn't show much except for the fact that it would only be for Kinect and WiiU. I'm afraid that this could become the next DC Universe Online except in the Marvel world.

With the announcement that the Avengers would be for the WiiU, Ubisoft decided to roll out the rest of their WiiU games, including Rayman Legends and ZombiU. Rayman Legends gameplay featured 3-player Co-Op, although the game is planned to support 5-player Co-Op. As for ZombiU, the trailer showed me that it was going to be nothing but a generic zombie game......but on the Wii.

Then it was the moment of truth. After all the meaningless banter, after the meh and bleh games, it was Assassin's Creed 3 time. In the first part, one the most epic trailers was shown that displayed how awesome AC3 will be. It showed Connor destroying an entire redcoat battalion with his tools of assassination an a little help from Mr. George Washington and his army. Then came the gameplay, which showed some tomahawk slaying and the usual being a bad-ass assassin. Announcements were made that this game is still against the Templars, which assumes you'll be killing both redcoats and colonists. One announcement that was not made, was how this would affect the story of Desmond.

After that, I thought the show was over, however I was completely wrong. The painstakingly, annoying chit-chat followed into the introduction of Shootmania, a fps online world which was nothing more than that. A scrimmage between two "top fps" players was played which was unimpressive to say the least.

When that was not the final act, I was thinking "what else does Ubisoft have?" Well, they answered that with probably the most surprising game of the entire E3 convention. Watch Dogs!!!! A sandbox open-world game that features the main character who has the ability to hack into the central computer operating system. In a world that is reliant on electronics, cameras, signal lights, etc. having the ability to control these objects gives you all the power in the world. So what do you do with that power? Use it to be a vigilante or wreck havoc upon the world? Watch Dogs gives you that opportunity without any of the "governmental troubles." I still have trouble putting this game into words, so all I suggest is for you to watch it.

Surprisingly, I was able to look over Ubisoft's blunders with their hosts due to the announcements and games showed. They did start off rather lazily with Just Dance 4, but ended with a bang, leaving the show on a high note. With the one-two punch of AC3 and Watch Dogs, Ubisoft was able to revitalize their conference after the previous years of horrible shows.
However, their press conference showed no signs of that the company was struggling. With games such as Dead Space 3, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, and the ever popular FIFA, EA showed why they are a force to be reckoned with.

EA started off their conference with Dead Space 3, a series that has revolutionized the horror genre of gaming. I kicked myself for not assuming EA would be delivering a sequel to this series, but at the same time enjoyed that it came as a surprise. The gameplay trailer showed a new aspect to Dead Space, Co-Op. At first I was excited about the idea of Co-Op and an expansion of the variety of enemies, but then after thinking about it I had my doubts. Does the Co-Op take away from the isolation feeling that I thought was core to the gameplay? Will the AI be smart enough to strategically control my companion if I choose to play alone? Only time will tell.

EA then moved on to their casual department, showing off Madden and Sim City. Although I was uninterested in both, I enjoyed Hall of Famer Michael Irvin as a guest speaker for Madden. A memorable quote, which had me smiling, was "You got the coolest job in the world," which I believe is totally true. Also, I had to chuckle when Sim City had the catchphrase "More City, Less Ville" (a little bash on Farmville and Zynga).

Moving on, new updates to Battlefield 3 and Star Wars: The Old Republic were announced. Battlefield 3 now has a Premium service that gives players access to 5 extra DLC packs, including an all out vehicle warfare map, and at a $50 price ($10 per pack) I thought it was a good reason to get back into the Battlefield mode. SWTOR also showed a reason to pick up the game, adding a free update with increase in level cap, and a new planet. Also, in July, anyone can play SWTOR for free, up to level 15. These bonuses are a great reason to pick up both games for the summer.

So far EA has impressed, and its conference moved on to Medal of Honor: Warfighter. Running on the Frostbite 2 engine, the game looked visually stunning. Comparing it to Battlefield 3, they both looked quite similar but different at the same time which in my opinion is a good thing. Both singleplayer and mutliplayer looked promising, and Warfighter definitely has a chance at competing with Call of Duty Black Ops 2.

After that adrenaline rush, we got to relax with more EA Sports news which included a return of EA NBA 13, the continuation of FIFA, and a partnership with UFC. With FIFA being a worldwide phenomenon it was good to see EA capitalizing on it by revealing the new mechanics of the game and social connectivity options. And finally, UFC can finally get its recognition with its EA partnership and hopefully it will become as successful as the other EA Sports games.

To conclude EA's conference, Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Crysis 3 were revealed. Both were fairly impressive but didn't compare to the games that opened the show. Need for Speed took the series into a new direction, making the game completely open world. I think this will make the game more approachable, but will be overshadowed by the rest of the powerhouses being released in October. Crysis 3 showed nothing new and I really thought it shouldn't have been the endnote of the show.

Overall, EA had one of the better presentations that I've seen. It followed Microsoft by starting off strong, but tailing off at the end, but EA sparkled in providing what gamers wanted, EA GAMES! There was a good balance between hardcore and casual games and the way the game presentations were spread out, EA kept viewers watching. It was an excellent conference and is the conference to beat.

EA Press Conference
In this "Super Bowl of game developers" as Jack Trenton stated, E3 is a place where games and developers are examined under a microscope. The good, the bad, and the ugly are forever recorded in gaming news history.

So, first on the chopping block is Microsoft. With last year's big announcement of Halo 4 at the end of the 2011 press conference, it was only fitting that Microsoft start the show of with Master Chief. There was a lot of anticipation due to the Halo 4 being produced by the new studio 343 Industries instead of Bungie and that anticipation was met with a comforting hand that put our minds at ease. The gameplay trailer showed new enemies, new weapons, and spectacular graphics. This trailer was one of the better ones that were shown during the press conference and this was only the beginning of the conference

Microsoft then moved from good to great with the showing of Splinter Cell: Blacklist. Sam Fisher is back and, so far as we know, is leading the Fourth Echelon in an attempt of bringing down a terrorist group that has threatened the destruction of the world's most powerful nations. The game showed big promise with its integration with Kinect's voice command, allowing Fisher to distract enemies through your voice, and call in air support by a simple voice command. I was excited to see Fisher back in the spotlight and that Splinter Cell: Blacklist would support Co-Op and the return of Spies vs Mercs.

Everything seemed to be going Microsoft's way, however this was were the fun stopped. Microsoft announced that the Xbox would have a new feature that would allow connectivity with mobile devices titled Xbox SmartGlass. In addition Xbox would support NHL, NBA, and other streaming services it hadn't had before. I felt that there was too much time spent on this "new feature" and more time should have been devoted to first part games such as Gears of War and Forza, or how they were going to promote the Kinect.

Instead, Microsoft decided to breeze over its first party titles with short trailers of Gears of War and Forza, moving to third party games such as Tomb Raider and Resident Evil. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed watching the gameplay for both third party games, but that's not what I came to see. There was a little mention of Kinect voice commands with the EA games, but those were unimpressive. As if things couldn't get worse, Microsoft launched it's campaign to "get people health!!!" yay... with Nike. The features were interesting, I'll give them that, but there was WAY too much time spent on this product. They followed that up with an Usher concert for Dance Central 3 which just made me roll my eyes.

In the final act, Microsoft sought to redeem itself with the new South Park Game and Black Ops 2 gameplay, but by then I was already looking forward to the next press conference. I was impressed by Black Ops 2 and the alternative choices seen in the gameplay seem to give the Call of Duty franchise a new element for the future.

Overall this wasn't Microsoft's worst conference, and it certainly wasn't its best. The bar had been set -not very high- but at least it had been set. Next up was EA.

Microsoft Press Conference:

No Podcast This Week

Hey people out there in the interwebz,
