Monsteca Corral Announced For WiiWare

Liverpool Indie Game studio Onteca has revealed their first title, Monsteca Corral, will be coming to WiiWare.

Monsteca Corral has you herd a group of alien special called Sdompes around the level while avoiding Robot-created traps. The developers suggest it will feature the ambient feel of games like Flower or Pikmin, though going by the screenshots they might be giving themselves too much credit. It reminds me more of Darwinia more than anything.

The game plans to be out by early 2010. Lets see if they can live up to their claims.

EU Nintendo Update - My Zoo, Rock & Roll Climber, Ninja Gaiden Arcade, A Little Bit Of Golf

Fairly dull week on the EU Nintendo Store, Hudson has released My Zoo, the sequel to My Aquarium which sold like hot cakes on WiiWare. You can grab that for 500 Points, or maybe you'll give Rock & Roll Climber a shot - the Rock Climbing "simulator" released in the US about 3 months ago.

On the Virtual Arcade front is Ninja Gaiden - if you have fond memories of the NES version, you might be in for a bit of a shock - the Arcade version is wildly different - a sidescrolling beat-em-up rather than the platformer it was turned into. You can pick that up for 800 Points.

Finally those with a DSi can grab A Little Bit Of... Nintendo Touch Golf, a cut up version of the original retail golf game. Since this doesn't have a subtitle I assume this might be the only piece of Nintendo Touch Golf the DSi will receive.

Rock N' Roll Climber™

Wii Points: 800
Game Type: Sports
Control Type: Wii Remote, Nunchuk, Wii Balance Board
Players: 1
Publisher: Nintendo

"Prepare to "rock out" like never before in Rock N' Roll Climber. Climb rocks using the innovative control scheme, which has you controlling your character's movement using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers. If you want an even more immersive experience, optional support for the Wii Balance Board is also available. Make your way up an array of courses, ranging from the Pop level's indoor rock wall to the Heavy Metal level's waterfalls (watch out for those moss-covered rocks - they're slick). In addition to the sense of accomplishment you'll feel upon reaching the top, you might just be rewarded with your own guitar."

My Zoo

Wii Points: 500
Game Type: Simulation
Control Type: Wii Remote, Nunchuk, Wii Balance Board
Players: 1
Publisher: Hudson Entertainment

"My Zoo is the follow-up to the hit 'My Aquarium'. In My Zoo, you can raise 8 of the most popular animals seen in zoos, including lions, panda bears, zebras, and elephants. As you feed and play with them, the animals may grow attached to you. They may even have babies that you can raise to adulthood. In addition to the animals that come with the game, you'll be able to download more later!"

System: Arcade
Phalanx Gets WiiWare Port, Banjo Not Included

Any excuse to use that packshot.

The Japanese Game Watch website has revealed that the classic SNES shooter will be returning to the Wii - but as a WiiWare title.

Zoom Inc, who were the developers of the original Sharp X68000 version of the game, will also be developing this version. It will be entirely based on the X68000 version and not the SNES version, and will also include a few minor tweaks to the original design.

The game will retail for 500 Nintendo Points when it's released in Japan this Winter, no word of a worldwide release just yet but I wouldn't be surprised if it does pop up sooner or later.

2BeeGames Reveal Finalists Of Second Indie Game Competition

2BeeGames have revealed the 10 finalists of their second Indie Game Competition, and since two of the finalists from the previous competition are on their way to XBLA and PSN titles we thought we'd take a look at the offering this time.

The finalists are:

Bullets of a Revolver – submitted by Diefox
Climb to the Top of the Castle – submitted by TwO Bros. Games
Cavemen Vs. Aliens – submitted by John Sear
Cochon’s Pursuit – submitted by Edouard Mercure
Daytraders of the Dead – submitted by Mat Groves / John Denton
DriftMoon – submitted by Ville Mönkkönen
Kablooey! – submitted by Vertigo Games
Tower of Heaven – submitted by Askiisoft
Turba – submitted by Binary Takeover
Vector Conflict: The Siege – submitted by Dig Your Own Grave Games

The 2BeeGames website has demos and videos of all the finalists, so I suggest you go and take a look at each. Of the lot I'm most interested in Climb to the Top of the Castle, seen in the embedded video, and Tower Of Heaven, a platformer set in the style of a monochrome GameBoy game.

GDC 2010 Reminds On Summit Submissions, IGF Student, Mobile Deadline

[Just a quick reminder from our GDC colleagues about the call for submissions for the 2010 Summits, including indie, social/online, iPhone Summits - with a bonus Independent Games Festival heads-up in there also for students/mobile developers.]

Game Developers Conference 2010 organizers are reminding potential Summit speakers that they have until Friday, Nov. 13th to submit lectures, with IGF Student and Mobile deadlines also impending.

Held on the first two days of GDC 2010 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco -- next March 9th and 10th -- this year’s GDC Summit line-up includes two new events in the form of the Social & Online Games Summit and iPhone Games Summit.

These summits, alongside the GDC Mobile/Handheld, Independent Games, and Serious Games Summits, which are all accepting submissions through the end of Friday, November 13th.

(Other summits also held at GDC 2010 but not currently calling for submissions include one or two-day events on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the IGDA Education Summit, although the Game Localization Summit has an informal call for lectures ending on November 15th.)

Nintendo Points: 200
Game Type: Music, Other
Players: 1
Publisher: Nintendo

"Trapy plankton make sounds as they swim over graceful lines made up of linked triangles. The creatures follow the lines you trace along the water. There are six types of Trapy in all, each with a unique color and sound. All Trapy plankton produce different tones depending on the direction they swim. They produce the lowest-pitched sounds when they swim to the right and produce higher-pitched sounds as their path veers to the left."

Electroplankton Hanenbow

Nintendo Points: 200
Game Type: Music, Other
Players: 1
Publisher: Nintendo

"Normally aquatic creatures, Hanenbow sometimes use floating leaves to launch themselves out of the water, creating strange sounds and melodies as they bounce off the leaves. Entire schools of Hanenbow have been known to launch out of the water, one after another. As a leaf is repeatedly hit by flying Hanenbow, it gradually changes color. This also alters the sound made by bouncing Hanenbow. When all the leaves turn red, a flower will bloom. It remains unclear why the Hanenbow display this curious behavior."

Electroplankton Rec-Rec

Nintendo Points: 200
Game Type: Music, Other
Players: 1
Publisher: Nintendo

"Rec-Rec are fishlike plankton that feed on sound waves. They absorb sound waves transmitted through water and use them as a form of nutrition. The sound waves that the Rec-Rec eat are then stored inside their bodies until they have been digested. Once the digestion process is complete, they play back the sounds in perfect four-second intervals. While these sounds are playfully emitted, wave patterns can be seen pulsating on their bodies. Rec-Rec always swim side by side in schools of four. When they swim at different speeds, the frequency with which they emit sounds also changes."

Electroplankton Nanocarp

Nintendo Points: 200
Game Type: Music, Other
Players: 1
Publisher: Nintendo

"Nanocarp have very sensitive hearing. Using their two ears to sense vibrations coming through the water, these plankton can distinguish sound quality and frequency. They display very interesting reactions to the sound of humans clapping or breathing. Nanocarp are also excellent swimmers. They have a tendency to swim in formations of 16 and react together when they detect sounds. These plankton emit sounds on their own when they sense waves on the water's surface. When this happens, the pitch of sounds they produce changes depending on where the Nanocarp is located."

Electroplankton Beatnes

Nintendo Points: 200
Game Type: Music, Other
Players: 1
Publisher: Nintendo

"Beatnes are curious plankton with geometrically shaped heads that form vertical strands like seaweed. Their bodies are made up of eight sections, each featuring a distinctive diamond-shaped tail. The sound of a Beatnes can vary wildly depending on which segment of the body is tapped. However, all of the sounds closely resemble the short-wave and triangular-wave sound effects from a Nintendo Entertainment System sound chip. When Beatnes are tapped in time with a rhythm, they continue to repeat the sounds in perfect time for a short period."

Wonder Boy™ III: The Dragon's Trap
Players: 1
Price: 500 Wii Points

"Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap is widely considered to be one of the best games produced for the SEGA MASTER SYSTEM. The direct sequel to Wonder Boy in Monster Land, it starts in the final lair of the previous game. This game is the first in the series to allow Wonder Boy to roam freely by using various animal forms, but as with previous games in the series, Wonder Boy can also buy various weapons, armor and items to help him in his quest."

Engine Software To Bring 5 Games To DSiWare

Straight from the German USK rating system comes 5 new titles coming to DSiWare. Don't get too excited though, it's about as bare bones as it can get.

Engine Software, probably best known to gamers as the guys who ported Puzzle Quest to the Nintendo DS, will be bringing Ferryman Puzzle, Just Sing! Christmas Songs, Simply Mahjong, Simply Sudoku and Simply Solitare to DSiWare.

I am fascinated by developers choice to create some of these titles. The DSi already has 4 Sudoku games with at least another one (Sudoku 4Pockets) on the way, you can get Nintendo's own 2-in-1 Solitare and there are already two Mahjong games out in Japan which we'll probably see pop up in the next few months. At what point does a developer think they have something to add to Sudoku on a platform where games don't drop from the shelves?

Even then, a Ferryman Puzzle game seems like a fairly dull idea, and just going by the name it sounds like it's not going to be dressed up at all. I don't even want to know what Just Sing! Christmas Songs is.

A point David Edery made in his recent address at the Australian Digital Distribution Summit comes to mind here. Simply being a cheap alternative isn't enough to get people to buy your game - in these cases Sudoku is everywhere, and being the fourth or fifth iteration on a console in seven months not going to net you anything.

I just can't get my head around it.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Coming To The Wii

In today's gift from the German USK rating system it has revealed that the Phoenix Wright might be on its way to WiiWare.

If you're out of the loop, Phoenix Wright is a fantastic point and click adventure game that has previously been on the GBA and Nintendo DS. The German USK rating system now suggests that the original game is also coming to the Wii.

Last year in Japan the Phoenix Wright series was ported to the PC, so the assets in higher resolution are available. When a game appears on a rating system without a prior announcement it's usually a digital release, but this could still be some crazy retail release. The way the rating is written suggests it will also be the full game, and not in episodic chunks.

If this is WiiWare it'll be Capcom's first foray since Mega Man 9. We expect a complete announcement soon.

Blitz Games' KrissX Lives On

It was a nice surprise to see Encleverment Experiment finally announced earlier this week, but now we can also reveal KrissX is also still alive, and is being published by Konami.

KrissX, which I presume is pronounced "Criss Cross", is a game that involves a lot of crossword-styled puzzles which you need to solve. It was announced alongside Encleverment Experiment and Droplitz early last year, but we hadn't heard a word of it since.

Today the game was rated by the Australian Classication Board, revealing Konami publisher. Doing some more digging it appears the game is heading to both the Xbox Live Arcade and WiiWare platforms.

It's a little odd seeing Konami as the publisher of the game, considering they released the awful XBLA game Coffeetime Crosswords last year, but hopefully this time they'll get it right.

This Week On WiiWare - UNO, Manic Monkey Mayhem And Excitebike

Much like the PlayStation Network, this week we've got a good idea on what'll be popping up this week on WiiWare., so we can actually tell you about their game prior to release.

This Friday those in Europe will be be getting at least two games - Gameloft's UNO, based on the classic card game will be available on both WiiWare and DSiWare. Another game this week is Manic Monkey Mayhem, a multiplayer game where you throw Bananas at Monkeys. Based on the footage of the game, I'm not too convinced that the game will be all that fun - maybe we'll be surprised.

For those in North America you'll be getting Excitebike: World Rally, a really nice looking remake of the original NES classic. Check out a trailer for it here.
