Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director confirms that Midgar is back, but smaller

Several major changes are coming to Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, but the biggest one is its open world. How will that impact some areas from the previous games that weren’t designed for that format? In an interview with Polygon, director Naoki Hamaguchi gave an example of how Midgar was adjusted for Revelation.

In Final Fantasy 7 Remake, everything takes place in Midgar, the iconic walled city from the original PS1 game that sits underneath an enormous plate. Hamaguchi confirmed that players will be able to return to Midgar as part of Revelation’s open-world pivot, teasing that a certain moment from the original game will occur again.

“Midgar is going to appear in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, and players will be able to visit it again,” Hamaguchi told Polygon. “In the original Final Fantasy 7, there is a narrative moment within the main story where the party revisits Midgar. We are following suit with the original, and having that same moment in Revelation.”

Hamaguchi is likely referring to a late game sequence where the party raids Midgar in order to fight Hojo. Funny enough, that scene features the crew parachuting into the city. We already know that Revelation will allow players to parachute out of the Highwind, so it’s not hard to imagine how the classic scene will work in the context of the new game.

Of course, returning to Midgar would require some drastic changes. The version of the city in Remake is largely made up of linear corridors. It’s not exactly built for open-world exploration, which players can do in Revelation by hopping out of their airship. Hamaguchi confirmed that Midgar has been stripped down to better fit that design ethos.

“The game experience of visiting and exploring Midgar is going to be a little different than it was in Final Fantasy 7 Remake,” Hamaguchi said. “You won’t be able to visit all of the slums or all the streets you were able to go around in. It’s going to be a bit different in Revelation. I can’t dive into details too much because it would be a spoiler, but when you look at the overall area of Midgar, it is built in a way that retains the iconic element of the Final Fantasy 7 world.”

The change is part of a larger philosophy tweak that players can expect from Revelation. A common complaint with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was that its various areas featured an overwhelming amount of content. Hamaguchi said that Revelation’s world is designed to be a little more manageable overall.

“Whenever you have this epic open-world format, a lot of the common fan criticism is that there’s way too much content to cover and it becomes too much,” Hamaguchi said. “We faced that same criticism for Rebirth, particularly with the minigames. With that, we did take some feedback from fans and we are implementing some changes with Revelation. We tried to address and alleviate their concerns, so we are putting some changes in Revelation so that the open-world experience becomes more enjoyable.”

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is shaping up to be one of 2026’s best

I was already in love with Capcom’s new Onimusha game after playing it last summer. After an extended look at Onimusha: Way of the Sword at Summer Game Fest this weekend, I’m now going to be extra annoying about the game: I will not shut up about this being the best thing I’ve played recently.

Capcom has already released a demo on consoles and PC for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, so you can try the game out for yourself. But at SGF, I played more areas of the game that aren’t in that demo, including a new horror-filled level set in an open area, and watched an Onimusha expert show off what new protagonist Miyamoto Musashi is fully capable of in battle. Watching high-level Onimusha: Way of the Sword play looked more like a well-choreographed dance than just video game swordplay. Way of the Sword looks absolutely stunning in skilled hands.

Then there’s me, a pretty average player when it comes to action games. But stepping back into the sandals of the game’s protagonist, I found my bearings pretty quickly, relishing in the game’s deep and satisfying combat.

In the chapter I played, “Careful What You Wish For,” Musashi visits a village that has been cursed by one of the game’s Genma, the Onimusha series’ immortal demons. There, Musashi encounters a woman with bandages over her eyes who explains that she has found relief from her vanity thanks to a presence at Yasui Konpiragu Shrine. On the way, Musashi encounters an elderly man who expresses delight at finding relief from his knee pain.

The twist is that both villagers have been “treated” by the demon Rasho-gan, who plucked out the eyes of the vain woman and took the man’s affected leg from the knee down. An infection called Malice has overtaken the town, causing its suffering denizens to hallucinate a more joyous existence.

Musashi and his living-gauntlet ally Shizuka seek help from a local power source, the Eight Stout Pillars, to cure the town of its blight. These tiny but portly stone men have a request for Musashi: recover three of the missing Stout Pillars who have been scattered about town by Rasho-gan’s servants. After some exploration and plenty of battles with low-level Genma, and reuniting all Eight Stout Pillars, Musashi sees what Rasho-gan is capable of.

In a cutscene, Musashi watches as a young woman begs for relief from Rasho-gan, who is shown only in shadow. The woman says that she is a student of the shamisen, a Japanese lute, and that her mistress is cruel to her. She begs Rasho-gan to relieve her of the pain in her hands that comes from endless play… which the Genma happily obliges by chomping off her fingers.

Rasho-gan is then revealed to be a disgusting demon covered in extracted human body parts, and maniacally goes after Musashi, seeking to relieve the samurai of his cursed gauntlet arm. What follows is a spectacular, multi-stage boss battle against Rasho-gan, in which the demon jumps to and fro, throws projectiles at Musashi, and uses his extra limbs in deadly and creative ways.

At this point in the game, Musashi has his sword, a bow and arrow, and multiple Oni Armaments to employ in battle. Musashi’s most powerful and magical armaments include the Twin Celestials, a pair of daggers that call forth healing spirits when used on a foe. Other Oni Armaments shown at Summer Game Fest include:

Earth Shakers, a pair of hammers that smash away an enemy’s stamina
Firebird Flute, which Musashi plays to summon fiery birds that set enemies on fire
Wind-Whipper, a double-bladed polearm that does area-of-effect damage and pushes enemies away

Suffice it to say, Onimusha: Way of the Sword offers a deep bench of weapons and combat techniques, and presents compelling bad guys to beat them up with. And after seeing some high-level gameplay in Way of the Sword, where all of Musashi’s techniques were utilized, I know that they’re all crucial to success.

During a hands-off look at Onimusha: Way of the Sword, we got to see more of the game’s enemies and environments. One section included an encounter with Ningyo, a fish-like yokai that mimics the appearance of a beautiful woman floating on the water. As it emerged, though, it revealed itself to be a terrifying sea creature hungry for human flesh. This particular section showed that many of the monsters Musashi will face aren’t just undead swordsmen or hovering demon heads; Capcom is plumbing Japanese folklore for some truly terrible creatures.

The hands-off section culminated with a pair of thrilling boss battles, including one against Byakue, the Hundred Defilements (a Genma covered in paper talismans that become blood-soaked over time), and Dohatsu-ten, Heaven’s Bane (a winged Genma whose featured limbs become more immense as the battle progresses). Both battles looked like the kind of intense encounters seen in both Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s public demo and its private one. There’s a good chance that this year’s Onimusha features some of the most impressive boss fights of 2026.

These demos also offered some more color into Musashi as a character. He’s a brave and capable samurai, but also kind of an oafish goofball. Based on my experience, this characterization comes through better with Japanese dialogue, as the British-accented English-language dub feels out of place and off-putting.

Netflix’s War Machine is officially one of its biggest movies of all time

In an era dominated by nostalgic sequels of beloved franchises — from Freakier Friday to Practical Magic 2 — and the next superhero blockbuster, one of Netflix’s biggest hits of 2026 is something far less common: an original sci-fi action movie starring the hulking Alan Ritchson (Reacher).

Released in March, director Patrick Hughes’ War Machine quickly became a breakout success for the streamer, but its path to the top was fairly unconventional. Lionsgate originally developed the film, which reportedly cost around $80 million, and released it theatrically in Australia to a paltry return at the box office. It looked like a traditional Hollywood flop until Netflix acquired the international rights. From there, War Machine instantly became one of the platform’s biggest films of spring 2026, debuting atop Netflix’s global rankings, reaching the Top 10 in more than 90 countries, and amassing over 118 million views.

It’s a prime example of how success has been completely redefined in the streaming era, pushing War Machine into Netflix’s all-time Top 10 most-watched original films alongside star-studded releases like Red Notice and The Gray Man. That’s an impressive feat for a movie with a refreshingly simple (and very 1980s) premise: War Machine follows a group of Army Ranger candidates whose final training exercise goes catastrophically wrong when they encounter an enormous extraterrestrial machine capable of horrifying destruction.

What begins as a military survival thriller gradually evolves into something bigger, blending sci-fi spectacle with old-school action movie sensibilities. Part of the film’s appeal is that it knows exactly what it wants to be. Rather than wasting time setting up a cinematic universe or teasing future installments, War Machine focuses on momentum. The action starts early, the central threat is immediately compelling, and the film rarely slows down long enough to get bogged down in exposition.

War Machine also arrives at a moment when audiences seem increasingly willing to embrace original genre fare. While many streaming releases disappear from public conversation within days, this sci-fi action thriller continued attracting viewers long after its debut, suggesting that strong word of mouth played a role in its unusually long run near the top of Netflix’s charts.

It helps to have a human mountain as the main character. Having traded the football pads and silly innuendos of Blue Mountain State, Ritchson has swiftly grown into a powerhouse star in projects like Reacher, Fast X, and now War Machine. Here, Ritchson’s performance keeps things grounded. Where you might normally roll your eyes at an action hero walking away from impossible odds, Ritchson actually gets worn down. He’s bruised, bloodied, and by the end of the film, he’s barely scraping by rather than coasting on plot armor.

That blend of military realism and larger-than-life sci-fi is also why the film has resonated with gamers. Viewers online have frequently compared its towering mechanized threat and tactical military focus to Metal Gear Solid, even if the similarities are mostly thematic rather than direct. Watching heavily armed soldiers navigate hostile terrain while facing a massive walking weapon, it’s easy to understand why the comparison keeps resurfacing. The creator of Metal Gear Solid, Hideo Kojima, even praised the film in a post on X, calling it “A geek-pleasing film that really evokes the feel of 80s–90s sci-fi action movies.”

Whether or not you see echoes of Kojima’s series, War Machine succeeds because it’s an original blockbuster that delivers exactly what it promises. Judging by its place among Netflix’s biggest films ever, audiences were more than happy to sign up for the ride, with War Machine 2 now in the works.

The 10 best comic book reprints in MTG’s Marvel Super Heroes set

The Marvel source material cards are the main reason why I am excited about Magic: The Gathering’s collaboration with Marvel Comics. These are reprints of popular Magic cards featuring borderless art from the comics. As a comic book fan, the prospect of collecting iconic moments from the stories I grew up reading is enough to make me overlook all the issues with Universes Beyond.

Well, maybe not all the issues, but at least Marvel Super Heroes is shaping up to be a much better set than Marvel’s Spider-Man. It also introduces a new slate of source material cards from a wide range of comics and characters, from iconic 1960s creators like Stan Lee and Jack Kirby to modern masterpieces. These cards can be a great chance for new fans to discover some of the stories that made Marvel Comics a cultural icon before the movies came around.
