The next Call of Duty has been revealed to be Black Ops 2. The game will take place about 20 years after the original Black Ops, set in a 21st century Cold War setting. As we’ve seen with the recent pictures on the official site, the game will feature futuristic weaponry, a first for the series.

From the few details we have, the project sounds an awful lot like an HD remake to us – especially given the fancier logo and “Enhanced Edition” subtitle. We’ve reached out to Beamdog for clarity on what the game actually is, and what platforms it’ll end up on (among other things). For now, know that Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition will land on whatever those platforms are at some point this summer. We’re gonna take a wild guess that it’ll be on PC at the very least.

Update: Beamdog reps tell us that the team at Overhaul is adding “new, original content” to the original game to make up the Enhanced Edition. “This is the Enhanced Edition, it’s not a repackage. We have the original source code and are doing a significant update.” He also confirms that no platforms have been announced just yet.

Update 2: A Beamdog rep also confirms that the company is self-publishing. Though he wouldn’t go into detail regarding the new content, he says that “it’s being lovingly crafted in the spirit of the original with the help of some of the original developers.” Additionally, Cameron Tofer and Trent Oster have been working on the project (“planning and organizing”) for “over a year now.” We’ll also hear more soon, as the team is planning “regular announcements every week with more details.”

Previous research has suggested that the advantages of running an SSD in a PS3 are slight to say the least – indeed, Digital Foundry’s PS3 hard drive upgrade guide struggled to find many advantages. Loading times are improved on many titles such as Gran Turismo 5, and you can shave seconds or even minutes off lengthy mandatory installs, but there’s little evidence that in-game performance is affected at all.

Could a Drive Upgrade Have “Cured” Skyrim PS3 Lag?

We noticed several miracle videos on YouTube that appeared to show that utilising an SSD inside the PlayStation 3 could mitigate the horrific impact of Rimlag – a bizarre phenomenon in which Skyrim players with large saves see game performance drop off a cliff after a certain period of time in-game. We’d been planning this feature for some time so arranged for our test drives to retain the older 2.02 patch. Note that this issue has now been largely resolved.

We utilised the same 65-hour save that we’d used in previous tests, wandering around each of the major towns and cities before fast-travelling to the next. In this way we can typically make the Rimlag issue kick in with a vengeance after about 40 minutes of gameplay. In this three-way comparison video, you can see that a hard drive upgrade makes a huge amount of difference to the overall performance level. The stock 60GB hard drive that came as standard with the launch PS3 didn’t fare particularly well here at all, and while there are still significant frame-rate dips with the hybrid drive and the SSD, we see three distinct tiers of performance.

At £1 per gigabyte (or below, if you shop about), it’s safe to say that SSD prices are still very much on the high side compared to conventional drives. But there’s still an opportunity to get good value. SSD prices are dropping, but the feature set of the drives is also improving in parallel – they’re getting faster and faster, and incorporating new technologies such as TRIM, which aims to constantly maintain performance over time, something the older SSDs didn’t do so well. The PlayStation 3 can’t access ultra-fast SSD speeds. The PS3 can’t stream data quickly enough by virtue of the fact that data needs to be buffered, and RAM is a finite resource on console. The PS3 obviously doesn’t support TRIM either. It’s in the 0.1ms access time that the SSD wins out, and that’s effectively a standard on all makes.

What this means is relatively straightforward: older SSDs are being dumped onto the used market, and because they don’t possess the latest and greatest features, bargains are there to be grabbed. We’d just recommend setting up a boot disc with HDDErase to ensure that the drive resets to factory performance levels and you should be set. The drive we used for this feature is rather old and long in the tooth, doesn’t support TRIM and struggles to top 200MB/s throughput. It’s a dinosaur in SSD terms, but it’s hard to imagine that any newer drive could do better – there are too many bottlenecks on the PS3 to get the most from a fully featured new drive. In short, an SSD upgrade will be expensive, but may not be quite as wallet-damaging as you may think.

What is League of Legends Dominion?

In this mode it looks like you have to capture and hold control points around the map

Some champions seem to unbalanced like rammus who can get from one side of the map to another within seconds. LoL is balanced for the normal map, but with a completely different map and objectives you can expect stuff to be OP and UP.

Dominion can be extremely fun though. A typical dominion game lasts from 15-20 minutes. I’ve only played about 10 dominion games so far and i’ve already had VERY VERY close games where we win by 5-15 points. (Each team starts with 500)

Killing minions doesnt seem to be as important at all in dominion, which I dislike a little bit. In a normal LoL game, last hitting minions is a very critical key to winning games which took a bit of skill. In dominion, you get 3 gold/second and gold for capturing/defending/killing champions. Basically the only objective in dominion is to defend 3 of the 5 control points which takes coordination rather than individual skill. However, it is rare to see someone actually defend because some people find that boring.

Overall I like dominion but it needs to be balanced or people need to adjust to certain champions. The majority of new players will probably like dominion alot more than the normal games.

I bought Dungeons on Steam a while back, and I bought Dungeon Keeper 2 on GOG well I can tell you DK2 even though its like 10 years old is way way better, but perhaps this stand alone expansion to Dungeons will make it more fun / interesting.

A closed beta for the highly anticipated hack-n-slash Diablo III has already begun, developer Blizzard said on Tuesday, but the beta is currently only available to friends and family of Blizzard employees.

There is no non-disclosure agreement on the beta’s content, a Blizzard representative said on the game’s official forums, meaning you’ll be able to see screenshots and videos of Diablo III in action. One video (above) shows images and footage from the opening of the beta, which will feature all five of the game’s character classes.

I contacted Blizzard yesterday to ask for access to the beta, but a representative said the company “currently has nothing to announce at this time.” I’ll be here with hands-on impressions whenever I get my twitchy clicking finger on the hot new game.
