Top 5 Boss Fights in Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2

Metal Gear Solid is one of the best tactical espionage action games ever created. While gameplay and cool features had a lot to do with MGS’s success, the boss fights were so epic and theatrical that they usually stand out the most and put MSG in a class all its own.

5. MSG 2– Raiden VS. Fatman

There were not too many things to be happy with, especially with the introduction of the blonde haired Raiden being the main protagonist. But if there was one brief shining moment it was the boss battle that takes place on the roof of ‘Big Shell’ with the psychotic “FATMAN”, a bomb wielding roller skating menace. This boss battle earns the number five spot, not because it was challenging, but because it is absolutely ridiculous.

Up until this point all of the boss fights in MGS were taken really seriously and even at times a little creepy. But this one is hard to take seriously. You are chased b this humungous villain who is somehow faster than most NHL players on skates while trying to disarm a number of bombs he has planted all over the roof. This one was truly a boss fight to be remembered.

4. MGS 1 – Snake VS. Grey Fox

This boss fight was definitely one of the creepiest. After spending a little bit of time guiding that Nikita missile down an electric hallway and blowing up the power source so you can FINALLY walk through it without being electrocuted, you discover a hallway littered with dying soldiers. One of the soldiers is talking about a “ghost” that has torn through their entire unit. If that isn’t enough to make you want to go back the way you came, you then see a soldier lifted up into the air with a samurai sword straight through his chest. That’s when you know, it is about to go down.

As far as boss fights go Grey Fox is formidable advisory. He is virtually impossible to hit because he uses optic camo and you have to spend a good chunk of time just trying to find him when he is hiding in various spots around the room. After you get his health down things become really freaky and he starts emitting electrical charges that will knock out a lot of your health if you go near him. Grey Fox is definitely one of the most terrifying boss fights in the entire series.

3. MGS 1 – Snake VS. Sniper Wolf Part One

This has got to be one of the most frustrating boss fights in the series, and it isn’t even an actual boss fight. After defeating Psycho Mantis you and your sidekick Meryl are pinned down by the vicious Sniper Wolf. As you stand there watching Meryl bleed to death you want to try everything you can to take care of this boss quickly, but be warned she is a good shot and if you so much as step out into the hallway from your cover for a second she will hit you and give a devastating blow to your health. The thing that aggravated me most about this boss fight was that I didn’t even have a sniper rifle to defend myself with.

That being the case you have to back track a bit to find one. Then, in a creepy twist, when you return to the boss battle Meryl is missing and the only evidence of her ever being there is a blood trail leading to the location of the deadly sniper.

2. MGS 2 – Raiden VS. Vamp

This one is the most heart wrenching boss battles in the MGS series. After escorting Otacon’s little sister for what seems like forever, she is captured by one of the creepiest bosses in the MGS series. Vamp is exactly what you think he is. He claims to be immortal and impossible to kill with standard weapons. The stress level of this battle is really high. Even though Otacon’s little sister is a pain, you really want to save her.

The only way to defeat Vamp is with a sniper rifle and he moves so fast it can take a bit to actually kill him. But despite your efforts, the girl dies. Knowing that MGS does sometimes have multiple endings, I tried to beat the boss fight a few more time but no matter what the girl dies.

1. MGS 1 Snake VS. Sniper Wolf Part 2.

After you survive the torture chamber and think you are in the clear Sniper Wolf makes another appearance. This time the scene is a field in the middle of a pretty bad blizzard and she challenges Snake to a sniper duel. You have no other option but to try and use what little cover is offered and take out the very efficient Sniper Wolf. This battle will forever be my favorite because I really enjoy feeling like the boss is far more powerful than I am, and in this scenario Sniper Wolf has all the advantage.
