Review:

It always, slightly perturbs me when your character dies at the beginning of a game. As it seems to make the whole experience of it a little pointless! So, being a huge fan of Fallout 3 when this happened at the beginning of New Vegas, I was a little disappointed. But, as it turns out, this is not the end, but a mere demonstration of just how dangerous the Mojave Wasteland can be. After all it was a simple courier assignment that led to your untimely death and with it starts the story of Fallout: New Vegas.

After being rescued from your early desert grave, you are given the opportunity to create your character in the guise of under going surgery in a small town doctors residence. After this off you go to settle the score with the mysterious man who tried to blow your face off. Following his vague trail across the Mojave Wasteland. Of course, nothing comes for free in the Wasteland and everyone you meet that could offer you some information to his location will want something in return. It maybe a simple case of supplying them with some caps or taking care of some nuisance mutated wildlife. But many requests will lead you to other characters who will require there own “favour” making it at times quite complicated to gather the information you need. However, how you solve these tasks is completely up to you! You can be as bad or good as you want to be. I would even go as far as to say that the game offers even more freedom then Fallout 3, as it never pushes you to go a certain way to solve “problems” is completely down to you!

What ever action you take to complete the quest, will affect your reputation and in New Vegas this plays a much bigger role. If you continually make decisions that affect one faction in a negative way then they may be unwilling to deal with you, that or greet you with guns blazing. Making decisions that are positive towards one faction, will of course make them ally themselves and even idolise you. Whilst this isn’t new to Vegas its much more prominent and whilst a decision may have a positive affect one faction it may make another shun you, making balancing the politics of New Vegas quite complicated.

Just like in Fallout 3, New Vegas offers plenty of distractions from the main quest, with plenty of opportunities for you to earn caps and rewards and these jobs send you all other the wasteland, which itself brings with it the games biggest distraction. Resisting the urge to explore the many abandoned buildings and installations that litter the landscape. So tempting is the urge to go digging around the various ruins to search for anything that might aid your survival, that it’s very easy to actually forget what you actually intended to do. But when you couple this with the length and number of quests and the number of locations for you to discover the size of the game dawns on you. It’s massive and it will consume your life as you simply can’t help investigating what exactly the strange structure in the distance is.

The Mojave Wasteland is a much less desolate place than the Capital of Fallout 3. People and wildlife are much wider spread and there are even plants you can pick and use here and there. Despite this though, it’s a much tougher place to survive. Firstly you’re dealing with a lot more wildlife, factions and communities. But it’s not only that as A.I has been upped, enemies are much better shots and they frequently land more crippling shots than in Fallout 3, and if you wound them they will either run and hide or try and get the attention of their friends. So before you set-off across the wasteland it’s always a good idea to make sure you’re well equipped.

Fallout: New Vegas introduces a lot of tweaks that improve the gameplay, however the biggest single addition is that of the hardcore option. When turned on, the game goes survival crazy and just as in the real world you need to eat drink and sleep. Ignore these basic needs and you get ill, keep ignoring them and you’ll simply drop dead and become an easy meal for the Mojave wildlife. To take things further in hardcore mode requires much more inventory management as ammo now has weight and of course affects what else you can carry at one time. Also as you can’t simply standout blasting away at enemies, using Stimpaks to heal your wounds, as aid items replenish your hit points overtime rather then straight away. Simple aid items will also no longer heal crippled limbs, so you’ll have to find your way back to a doctor, or find a doctors bag in order to reset your limbs. This new hardcore option may seem a little too far for those who struggled with Fallout 3, but for the true wasteland survivalist it’s the most notable addition that fits in perfectly with the feel of the game giving it an extra dimension as you struggle to survive in this unforgiving land.

To further push this feeling of complete survival, New Vegas has a much bigger focus on crafting with campfire for cooking rejuvenating meals, and reloading benches that allow you to make you own ammo should supplies dry up. There are even chemistry sets that allow you to make your own Stimpaks and Chems for when you need a boost during a fight.

Fallout: New Vegas looks to expand on how companions are handled, with the addition of a command wheel and whilst this serves to make it easier to get them to do what you want. Very little has been done to improve their A.I and they often prove less useful than you would hope.

Fallout: New Vegas, looks and plays exactly the same as Fallout 3. But the additions that Obsidian have made push the survival angle even further to provide a much more immersive and authentic experience, and just like its predecessor New Vegas proves to be a role-playing masterpiece.

Review:

Unreal Tournament 3 probably shouldn't feel as fresh and as exciting as it does. When you get down to it, UT3 doesn't change a lot of the things that you liked about Unreal Tournament 2004. It's still the same fast-moving and action-oriented first-person shooter. Yet the game's new maps, the requisite graphical overhaul, and easy-to-understand gameplay modes all feel great. The way the shooter genre has changed over the three years since the previous game is also a factor. With most other games slowing things down and going for a more realistic, militaristic pace, UT3's hypercharged gameplay explodes out of the gate feeling refreshing and new.

The UT games have never been about single-player action, but like in the previous games, there is a campaign mode in UT3. It's a series of matches against bots wrapped around a basic but uneventful storyline. The big switch this time around is that Unreal Tournament is no longer a sport. Now it's war, and you play as a character on the hunt for revenge against an evil Necris woman who led an assault against unarmed civilians on your colony. You and the survivors of the attack join up with a corporation, fight to gain territory held by other corporations, and so on. It's little more than a five- to seven-hour training mode to help you get up to speed on the maps and the modes so you can go into multiplayer with a fighting chance. One cool addition is that you can play the campaign mode online with up to three other players. Although joining other humans to combat the artificial-intelligence-controlled bots isn't exactly the most fun you can have in this game, it's more compelling (and easier) when you're playing with other people. You can set the skill level of the bots, too. At the lowest setting, they're complete idiots that won't even bother to turn around and fight you if you start shooting them from behind. The highest setting, godlike, is appropriately stiff, though not entirely impossible. It's just tough to fight against opponents who rarely miss

The maps you'll see in the single-player campaign are the same maps you'll see online, at least until the mod-making scene shifts into high gear. You'll get into matches using a typical PC-style server browser, but the game tries to keep you away from a full list of every server running by moving you through some console-game-style menus to filter down to the gametype you want to

see. UT3 comes with six different modes of play. Deathmatch is the standard free-for-all battle. Team deathmatch, as you'd expect, breaks you up into two teams. Duel is a one-on-one mode where two players go at it while other players spectate. All three of these modes are played on the same set of deathmatch-friendly maps. UT3 also has a standard capture-the-flag mode, complete with the translocator, the teleporter gun that has made UT's take on CTF stand apart from most others. There's a new vehicle CTF mode, which takes the standard CTF concept and places it onto larger battlefields. As the name suggests, you have a number of vehicles that you can use toward your goal of grabbing the opposing team's flag and getting it back to your base. The largest mode is called warfare, and like onslaught mode before it, it's played on even bigger maps, with more vehicles.

Warfare is a node-based mode where each team has a base with a power core that needs to be damaged and destroyed for a victor to be declared. The power core is linked to other nodes at various spots in the map. You must push forward, capture nodes, and link them together until you've got your team's nodes linked to the opposing team's base. At that point, you can damage the enemy core and, ideally, blow up it for a victory. There's a ton of pushing and shoving back and forth across the map when two great teams square off, and it's also the most strategic mode. It differs from onslaught mode by offering secondary objectives, like unlinked nodes that can be captured to give a team forward spawn points and access to more vehicles and a countdown node that will occasionally drain energy from the enemy core if you control it. Each of the objective-based team modes comes with its own set of maps.

Overall, the map quality is high, with plenty of symmetrical, interesting level layouts for the objective-based modes. One deathmatch map, called Gateway, has multiple areas that look really different, all of which are linked together with portals. You'll also get a new remake of the classic Unreal map Deck. Furthermore, the Unreal mod community has always been pretty rabid, so you know it's just a matter of time before someone makes one of those "giant world" levels where you can hide in a sink drain and snipe people with an instagib shock rifle while they float down into the bottom of a bathtub. Yes, that's right, the instagib mode is also back in the game, along with a handful of other basic mutators you can use to make quick changes to any of the modes.

The weapons in Unreal Tournament 3 should be old hat to anyone familiar with the series. The shield gun has been ditched in favor of the impact hammer, and your default weapon is the slow-firing enforcer pistol, but beyond that, the weapon differences feel limited to minor balance changes. The bio rifle's gooey projectiles seem to do more damage, which makes it somewhat more useful. The secondary fire on the flak cannon seems as if it flies out at a slightly higher, slower arc, which forces you to make a few changes to how you aim. But again, the changes are minor. The rocket launcher can still lock on, the sniper rifle is still great fun for headshots, and the redeemer is still a huge missile that you can guide into targets to cause a nice, big blast that's handy in some of the larger vehicle CTF games. But when isn't a large explosion handy?

The other gameplay changes also feel relatively minor. Recent UT games have employed an adrenaline counter, which built up as you killed enemies or collected large pills around each level. When the meter was full, you could activate a special ability, such as invisibility or regeneration. This system isn't present in UT3. Also, the rules for double-jumping after a dodge move seem to have been altered a bit. Again, these are minor differences that don't really get in the way or drastically change the overall feel of the game, but they're noteworthy just the same. A more dramatic difference is the hoverboard, which is in vehicle CTF and warfare. The hoverboard lets you pick up a little more speed, which is useful on the larger battlefields. The catch is that getting hit while on your board knocks you over, which gives enemies more than enough time to finish you off as your character slowly arises from the ground. You can even do tricks while on the board, which isn't useful for gameplay purposes but is still totally rad.

Unreal Tournament 3 uses Unreal Engine 3, the same basic set of tools that powered Gears of War. As such, this is a really great-looking game on high-end machines. But even if your PC isn't top of the line, the game scales better than most, giving you a playable experience on midrange machines as well. But, of course, the game is at its best when you're exceeding the game's minimum requirements, in situations where you can run at a high resolution and still get a great frame rate. It supports widescreen resolutions, but playing in widescreen actually gives you a smaller view of the overall action, given that the game appears to cut off the top and bottom of the 4:3 view to fit it onto a wider monitor. UT3 certainly isn't the first PC game to have this problem, but given its highly competitive nature, cutting off parts of the screen seems to be a pretty bad solution.

The game's textures, character models, and animation are all top-notch when you've got everything turned up. Characters can be tweaked and modified using different torso pieces, shoulder plates, and more. The handful of levels that have running liquids in them have good-looking water effects, too. Overall, it's a very sharp-looking game if your machine can hang with its higher settings. The audio fits right in with what you'd expect a UT game to sound like. The music is high in energy, the explosions and gunfire sound great, and the character voices, which occasionally pipe up to taunt you when you get killed, fit right in as well. The announcer is appropriately loud and booming when calling off your head shots, killing sprees, and the like

It's a very basic, straightforward package, but don't take that to mean that UT3 is a no-frills sequel. With its variety of modes and its occasionally crazy high-speed action, UT3 still feels very different than the typical first-person shooter coming out these days. On top of that, it's very exciting and just as much fun now as it has been in previous installments. UT3 has more than.enough content to keep you busy, and with mod-makinh tool include in the package, the potential for more user-generated content in the future is certainly present.

You know the real problem with Epic’s Gears of War? Take its surly ex-military protagonist, Marcus Fenix. Arms like elephant legs, virtually no neck, shoulders up to his eyeballs, wears triple-size ski-boots and hauls around a rifle with a chainsaw bayonet, yet somehow he can dodge and weave and somersault around the game’s subterranean enemy Locust Horde like Jet Li in a fat suit. Must have been the ballet lessons?

That just about sums up what’s wrong with Gears of War for the PC, which is of course to say “nothing, really.” In fact it’s a perfectly reliable port of the Xbox 360 version, predictably better looking, with five new campaign levels, three extra multiplayer maps (for a grand total of 19), a few additional achievements, and a level editor to boot. Comparatively speaking, it’s like a game of the year edition that keeps all the good stuff and tacks on twenty percent more.

Or does it? The original Gears of War had a gorgeously shiny, strapping, glazed-industrial MO, but it’s campaign was really just a protracted scoot-and-shoot down a single track with interlocking areas littered with conveniently placed concrete pylons and slag heaps and skeletal car frames for cover. You’d squat behind these between bursts of enemy fire, pop up, scan for head or leg shots, slide along your plane of protection, then maybe dare a flank move or two. Epic’s idea of “tactical” was for you to optionally take a side route that beckoned like a blinking runway, come up perpendicular to an entrenched (but stupidly ignorant) opponent, and tattoo an unfriendly hello into the back of its skull. The PC version adds more of the same, but is the “twenty percent” extra really justified just so players can fight a gun-armed behemoth only glimpsed in the Xbox 360 version and titularity referred to as ‘the’ Brumak?

Not quite. Looking like the fatter, sorrier sibling of the spider-eyed and fireball-flinging imps in Doom 3, the much hyped Brumak delivers a tense if entirely scripted performance as it distantly tracks your progress through the five additional levels newly slipstreamed between the start and close of the campaign’s final chapter. Until you have to fight it, anyway, at which point it turns out to be big, dumb, and preposterously easy to pummel by observing a few trite conventions (shoot its arm-cannons, shoot its legs, shoot its head, and Kaboom!). After five or six edgy hours struggling off a bridge and through a park and through the guts of a power plant, the Brumak disappointingly feels all tease and no play.

Of all the extensions of experience that games provide, from puzzle-exploits with cartoon unicorns to unrepentant radioactive horrors, it’s the sandbox gangster sims of the GTA series that are the most voluminous and detailed. These open-ended tales within modern cities come complete with their own world: a world of fisticuffs, automotive action, gunplay, fashion, romance, intrigue, comedy, lunacy, drunkenness – the GTA games are more than the sum of their substantial parts.
These are games that set out to be huge, not simply in popularity, but in their content. Rockstar build miniature worlds, and the details they burn into them are startling. GTA IV is no exception: this huge game is its details. It brims over with them, as if the Rockstar team were out of control and had to be actively constrained from their ceaseless, imaginative world-building. Walk down a street and you can’t help being impressed with the litter in the alleyways, the changing weather, or the absurd satirical chatter that goes on between pedestrians.
This is a vast game environment without peer. Even MMOs are cowed by its breadth and life. Sprawling, funny, grim, consistent, violent, even sexy: it is as alive and human as all great games would aspire to be. People who’ve compared this game to Goodfellas and Citizen Kane are kind of missing the point: it’s not the story that the world contains that matters, it’s the world that contains the story. Rockstar have realized that if they build an impressive enough cityscape for the action to take place in, then everything else takes care of itself. In this case, their city is impeccable.
As for what goes on in that world, we have two words for you: music and murder. They might not be the two words that sum it up for you, but they were for us. You’ll see what we mean as soon as you start cycling through the radio stations in any of the many vehicles you’ll end up appropriating. From Chet Baker to Suzie Q to Aphex Twin: the soundtrack alone is a heterogeneous sausage and mash of our musical culture. Chasing down bikers while listening to smoky ambient electronica, or simply getting down with the ‘news’ from the Liberty City area is entertainment in itself. At one point we cruised up to the pier and found ourselves listening to jazz while watching the sun set. How many other games can lay claim to moments like that?
If anything is true of this game, it’s that few people will take quite the same thing from it. There is so much possibility crammed into GTA IV that everyone finds something for themselves. Whether or not you enjoy the ludicrously told, fantastically voiced plot of revenge and disappointment is almost irrelevant: GTA IV’s sandbox approach means there’s a mad zoo of videogame media entertainment on offer, and there’s almost no chance of failing to come away with something of value. From comedy shows to satirical TV of the lowest order, from high-falutin’ pop music to down and dirty hip-hop, from vicious street violence to ten-pin bowling: Grand Theft Auto IV is pumped up and seething with material. That alone makes it worth playing.
Anyway, that tale of revenge and disappointment: it’s the story of Niko Bellic, the stony-faced protagonist into whom you pour your actions. GTA IV places you in the life – partly in control but partly as spectator via cutscenes – of this Balkan immigrant to the United States. He is a profoundly damaged human being: dehumanized by war. He wants love, comforts, comradeship, but he does not flinch at astonishingly cold violence. As in the previous games, it gives your adventures something of a split personality, although it seems all the more pronounced with Niko. He’s genuinely likeable, despite barely seeming to notice that he slaughters anyone who crosses him, or kills just because various shady folk ask it. That’s where the ‘murder’ of ‘music and murder’ comes in. You can’t get away from it: you’re going to kill people. A lot of people. It doesn’t make a lot of sense, but hey, it’s amazingly entertaining. And it has a great soundtrack.
And perhaps the protagonist’s schizophrenic behavior is understandable. A veteran of the terrible Balkan war, Niko is no stranger to taking lives. And now that he’s come to the United States he’s faced with the terrible reality of his cousin not living at ease with wealth and women, but instead struggling with debt and vicious immigrant mobsters. Rather than skipping into a hot tub with a supermodel he’s running errands in a crappy taxi. I’d be grumpy too.The only way is up, and the game unfolds as both your aspirational climb through the ranks of Liberty City’s mob, and as a tale of revenge. There’s a reason Niko came to America, and it wasn’t just to pursue that American Dream. There’s baggage to carry, and old scores to settle. The main character along for the ride is Niko’s cousin Roman, who starts the game as the bullied owner of a small cab firm. He helps you out and remains hopelessly optimistic through all the horrors that the pair face. He struggles through locking himself in the boot of a car, having his apartment torched, and being shot in the stomach. Without him, you begin to realize, you’d be completely directionless.
Direction is needed, too, since once you’re dumped into the world proper you have a wealth of options. We started out by just watching TV in the apartment. Republican Space Rangers was on – not a particularly subtle piss-take of American foreign policy and the Republican attitude towards the rest of the world in general. Then it was time to get up and go to explore the world outside. It was so weirdly similar to actually being dumped in a new city that we found ourselves getting chills.
Much of what takes place from that point on is mediated through Niko’s mobile phone, which has a range of options. You make and receive calls, but also receive text messages that remind you of certain options and possibilities, and keep you abreast of the optional side missions. You can also head to an internet cafe and pick up your emails.
For the most part you’re probably going to be following the various missions that the mad cast of characters delivers to you. They call you, or you go and find them at their general location – which is clearly marked on the map. Once the city opens up this can get a little laborious, so we often found ourselves flagging down cabs, which act as a kind of fast-travel system in the city, albeit at the price of a few extra dollars to skip the ride sequence.
All the missions involve getting about in the city. Usually this will mean stealing cars – done at the touch of a button – but it could mean getting a cab, a subway, or even walking. It’s on foot that you really get a measure of the place: this Liberty City, based on modern New York, is as real as any videogame illusion has ever been. Of course you’re probably going to drive, which, thankfully, is an excellent option, one that even survived the transition to mouse and keys.
Cruising around the city usually delivers a few dents to your ride, but the traffic is slow and sensible enough to stay out of the way. Only the motorcycles really frustrate, and you’ll find yourself picking favorite cars to steal as you figure out how things handle. We became obsessed with tracking down and stealing sports cars, since they handle so well, and easily outpace the cops. That said, we rapidly shed our near-suicidal videogame driving habits and began to behave when we realized it really was easier not to use the handbrake on every corner, and to pay the toll-booth on the freeway and not be bogged down by raging cop-cars.

Driver relationships feel tacked on

In Dirt 2, you assume the role of an up-and-coming race driver who's competing on the off-road circuit against such pros as Ken Block and Travis Pastrana for the first time. That's a daunting prospect, but one of the many great things about Codemasters' latest racer is that you can have a lot of fun with it and end the lengthy Dirt Tour career mode a champion regardless of your skill level. Your opponents aren't pushovers; in fact, they put up a believable fight from start to finish, but the vehicle handling and damage is forgiving, the difficulty level can be altered before every event, and a slick flashback feature gives you the option to instantly replay portions of a race if you make a mess of them. Dirt 2 isn't as realistic as some of the other excellent off-road racers that have come before it, but it's as accessible and exciting as any of them.
Your career gets off to an auspicious start when you're presented with your first car: a Subaru Impreza that belonged to the late, great Colin McRae. Like all of the 35-plus cars in the game, its performance is measured in ratings from one to 10 for acceleration, top speed, and handling. Your rides are relatively slow as your career gets underway, but as you move up through the ranks, you get to upgrade them; not one part at a time, but with the purchase of kits designed for different event types. Those upgrades are mandatory, but you also have the option to tinker with settings before each race, and the good news is that even if you don't know your downforce from your differential, there's a good chance that you can do so with some success. That's because there are only seven variables, which are all clearly explained to you, and there are only five different settings for each. It's not deep, but it's fun to play around with, and any changes that you make are immediately noticeable once you get behind the wheel.
Regardless of whether you're driving a rally car, a trophy truck, or a buggy, Dirt 2's responsive controls are up to the job of keeping your wheels where you need them to be as you navigate tight corners, big jumps, expanses of shallow water, and transitions between loose surfaces and tarmac. Playing with a gamepad is recommended, but even the default keyboard controls work great. Every vehicle in your ever-expanding garage handles differently, but not so much so that climbing out of one and into another is ever jarring. All of the vehicles look great (both inside and out), can be customized with different unlockable liveries and interior decorations, get covered in great-looking dust and mud as you drive them, and can be damaged and deformed beyond recognition if you lose control even for a second. You can choose to play with damage that's purely cosmetic or that'll have an impact on your car's performance, though it's worth mentioning that even if you opt for the latter, the adverse effects are quite minimal. Sure, a wobbly wheel or a damaged engine will slow you down a bit, but you're never going to be limping around the track and fighting to keep yourself moving in something resembling a straight line. It's possible to total your car if you crash headlong into something at high speed, but even that doesn't necessarily have to mark the end of your race if you haven't used all of your flashbacks already.
Depending on which of the six difficulty levels you're racing at, you have up to five flashbacks at your disposal that you're free to use at any point during a race. Using them could hardly be simpler; you initiate an instant replay of the last 10 to 15 seconds, and then resume playing from any point. While not entirely original, it's a great system because even minor mistakes can be extremely costly when you're racing at speeds well in excess of 100 miles per hour with your tires clinging to the very edge of traction. Having to start one of the lengthier eight-lap races over because of a small error would be frustrating, and while the flashbacks might seem like cheating, knowing that you have them at your disposal encourages you to push yourself rather than just get to the front of the field and then drive more cautiously to the finish.
Because your opponents in Dirt 2 want to get to the front of the field just as badly as you and they drive in an impressively believable fashion, you might even use flashbacks as a result of their errors from time to time. Sometimes the AI drivers will collide with you or impede your progress just by getting in your way; at other times, they'll have their own spectacular crashes and you'll have to act quickly to swerve around them. Opponents are less of an immediate concern in the staggered start rally stages, but in just about every other event type, you're going head-to-head with up to seven other drivers whose attitudes toward you (and comments during races) become increasingly respectful as your career progresses. The concept of you having relationships with the other drivers on the tour is an interesting one, but it feels a little tacked on because their development is linked only to your results rather than to how you drive. Forcing opponents off a track into the side of a building should at least be grounds for them to get angry, but once you've befriended them, their only response to your blatant disregard for their safety during an overtaking maneuver is to ask if you're OK.
A more successful element of the Dirt Tour career mode is the way that all menu navigation is handled from within your RV and in the area immediately outside it. This first-person menu system not only adds to the feeling that you're a pro race driver taking part in a world tour, but it also lets you seamlessly navigate both the single-player and multiplayer modes without ever breaking that immersion. For example, the desk in your RV is where you pick your next event on a world map. If you turn to your right, you can step out of the RV to look at the vehicles in your garage, purchase new ones, and check magazine covers for news on the progress that you and any of your friends with a copy of the game have made. If you turn to your left, you find a notice board on the wall where all of the multiplayer options are listed. Unsurprisingly, there's no split-screen functionality, but the online options delivered via Games for Windows Live are impressive to say the least.
Every event type, track, and vehicle that appears in the Dirt Tour can also be selected online. Point-to-point and circuit-based races, as well as staggered start rally stages, are joined by a couple of more inventive modes that, while relatively rare occurrences in single-player, could well end up being the most popular online. The best of these is Domination; in this race, points are awarded not only for your finishing position but also for recording the fastest times in any of the four sectors into which every track is divided. The same number of points (10 for a win, eight for second place, and so on) is available for each sector and for the end result, which makes it entirely possible to win a Domination event without even placing on the podium. That's great because, unlike regular races, it gives you an incentive to keep trying even if you wipe out (or get taken out) on the first corner and have little hope of catching the rest of the field. Last Man Standing is a fun event as well, though because the driver in last place is excluded every 20 seconds after the first minute has passed, finding yourself at the back means you subsequently have to spend a couple of minutes watching your opposition in spectator mode.
Given how superb both the cars and the various environments they race through look, it's impressive that the frame rate never drops below 30 frames per second. The sense of speed is great, whether you're racing through a jungle in Malaysia, across the Utah desert, on the streets of London, or inside a Los Angeles stadium. The attention to detail at all of these locations borders on excessive given how little time you have to take in the scenery, but it makes watching the action replays all the more satisfying--even if there's no option to save them. Dirt 2's audio design is also worthy of praise because while much of your time is spent listening to the awesome revving of your engine and the energetic soundtrack that plays anytime you're not racing, there are also ambient noises to listen out for at every location and the cheer of spectators as you pass them. Perhaps the most impressive audio of all, though, comes courtesy of your codriver who, anytime you take part in a rally stage, does an excellent job of telling you what turns and hazards you're approaching. He or she (you get to choose) does so well that, unlike during other events held at the same locations, you hardly ever feel the need to glance up at the minimap of the course. Furthermore, your codriver will react believably to your driving, so if you slam sideways into a wall, you might hear a scream, while after brushing against a tree, you might be reassured that your car suffered only a scratch.
It's not details like these that make Dirt 2 such a superb racing game though. What makes Dirt 2 so special is the fact that its multiple difficulty levels and forgiving gameplay mechanics make it accessible to newcomers while offering a significant challenge for veterans of Codemasters' Colin McRae Rally series and other off-road racers. There's also the single-player mode that spans no fewer than 100 events (often comprising multiple races), a suite of multiplayer options that includes plenty of different modes and leaderboards, and, of course, your sweet RV, which fills with souvenirs from all of the locations that you race at as your career progresses. If you have even a passing interest in off-road racing, you won't regret a second spent behind the wheel of Dirt 2.

Treyarch is developing the next installment in the Call of Duty franchise, rumored to be set during the Cold War.

Black Ops finally sees Treyarch leave behind the ever-popular environment of World War II and embrace the slightly more modern era of the Cold War and Vietnam. Taking place throughout the 1960s, the latest Call of Duty boasts what is perhaps the most comprehensively structured, story-focused narrative that the series has ever had. In fact, I'll go one step further and say this -- Black Ops boasts the best single-player campaign that the series has ever had.

From its genuinely intriguing plot, full of dark twists and historical cameos, to the endless set pieces that throw the player from one ludicrously action-packed scenario to the next, Call of Duty: Black Ops is the game with which Treyarch has finally put its definitive stamp on the series, and even eclipsed Infinity Ward in terms of in-game narrative and memorable moments.

Much praise must also be had for the variety of gameplay. Not only is there plenty of traditional FPS action, but a number of vehicular sections are liberally spread throughout the game, and all of them are surprisingly fun. Expect to pilot helicopters, boats, motorcycles and more throughout the course of the game, and expect to be excited while doing so.

Even the pedestrian sections are spiced with variety, with guns that differ not just in model, but in modifications. Throughout each level, you'll come across guns with scopes, guns with extended mags, and guns with shotgun, grenade and even flamethrower attachments. Each gun feels powerful and heavy, with shotguns especially packing a punch. Throw in a new bunch of incredibly vicious melee kills, and you've got a brutal game that should please even the most blood-starved gamer.

The campaign pretty much does everything right. The grenade spam that plagued World at War has been annihilated, while the level designs feel inspired and heartfelt, and sometimes horrific (the section involving a certain gas attack is especially intense). Truly a magnificent single-player experience that manages to tell more in its one story than the Modern Warfare series has done with two.

Unfortunately, the quality of the single-player campaign has not been matched in the multiplayer mode, at least on PC. While you can tell that there is a very well-built, solid multiplayer experience at its core, the game is almost impossible to enjoy due to intense lag, server connection errors, and matchmaking issues. These aren't just annoying bugs -- these are issues that render the game damn near unplayable.

Even when it "works," Black Ops still stutters tremendously, and should you venture online, you best be prepared to eat several deaths simply due to the game's issues, all the while reading in-game chat complaints about how laggy everything is. For a Call of Duty game, having a poor multiplayer mode is unforgivable, due to the relative brevity of the single-player campaign, and with a multiplayer this poor, Black Ops becomes a total let-down.

I'd love to focus this review on the interesting "COD Points" system that allows you to spend in-game currency on unlocking Perks and equipment in whatever order you choose. I'd love to talk about how balanced the gameplay is and how cool the maps are. Unfortunately, after getting a "connection error" message the very second I began a last-ditch effort to fight through the problems, I've officially given up trying to suffer it. The frustrating part is that from what I have played of the multiplayer, I can see piles of potential fun. I've loved Call of Duty's multiplayer for many years, and this looks to be as good as any other, with a few extra unique twists and fun Kill Streaks. Unfortunately, it's not fun right now. Not at all. It's excruciating, frustrating, and broken beyond forgiveness.

Luckily, at least one multiplayer mode partially works properly -- Zombies. Matchmaking seems to have its own set of issues, since it can be difficult to get a match started, but at least when one starts, the amount of lag is kept to a minimum, usually only stuttering a few times per game. Zombie mode is also very fun indeed, with Treyarch making a far more involved and character-driven version of the minigame first found in World at War. The use of historical figures such as John F. Kennedy may be considered tasteless by some, but it's far more amusing than it has any right to be, and provides a sense of humor that offsets the intense, sometimes nerve-wracking gameplay that only waves of encroaching undead can provide.

I honestly, truly wish I could say more in Black Ops' favor. This is the first Call of Duty in which Treyarch has stepped out of the shadow of Infinity Ward, but the triumph has been ruined by an unbearable PC port, and this is coming from a game that had promised to do much more for PC gamers than Modern Warfare 2 did. Since we currently lack a 360 or PS3 version of the game at the time of writing, I can't say how much better they are, but this version is a disaster.

The truly stunning single-player campaign offsets many of the multiplayer's flaws, and the Zombie mode is tons of hilarious fun, but neither manages to be lengthy or deep enough to make Black Ops the truly great game that I know it should be. This is an incredibly well-made game that, once patched, will easily sit among the hottest titles of the year. As it exists right now, however, I can't recommend the game for purchase. Wait until an update comes, and then by all means jump in, but anybody who currently buys the game will get shafted.

Once the multiplayer is fixed, feel free to pop at least two more points, most likely even three, into this review's score. I can only review what I've got in front of me, however, and what I've got is a superb game that has pissed all over itself.

It's that time of the year again. November is officially designated Call of Duty month. It's the reason why this time of the year no longer has a huge saturation of top-quality games, as publishers scrabble to steer clear of Activision's almighty entertainment behemoth.

With its power to completely empty launch calendars, Call of Duty: Black Ops sees Treyarch taking the reins from Infinity Ward for another crack at the whip. With Infinity Ward on its knees at the moment, has the "lesser" studio stepped out from the shadows to seize the series as its own? We'll probably need a videogame review to answer such a burning question
