Hola GGT Fam! Adesina here, and it’s time for the Games Geeks Tech Talk. And this week we’re looking at these new Apple Airpods: How do they stack up to Galaxy Buds? But first, let’s get serious and talk ethics in technology, because some of these tech companies, are going a little wild.

[Ethics in Technology / Theranos]

So, if you’ve still got cable, you may have already seen the much-advertised HBO documentary, The Inventor: Out For Blood in Silicon Valley. And if you haven’t, or if you don’t even know what that is — never fear, no spoilers here! But, I will tell you that it’s an in-depth look at the rise and fall of medtech startup Theranos, and its CEO, Elizabeth Holmes. And the reason we care, is because in the midst of so many tech industry scandals, from Facebook’s multiple privacy issues, to the Google anti-trust investigation, to the ongoing no-platforming of controversial figures on social media sites like Twitter and Youtube, the Theranos debacle stands out in that it wasn’t about a few backdoor deals, or even a general abuse of power. Instead, the entire basis of the company, the very technology it was supposed to be based on, was false! And, unlike most of the recent tech scandals over the past couple years, this one actually ended the company. But regardless, all of these scandals provoke the question: Is there a crisis of ethics in tech? Or in business in general?

Well, two former Theranos employees are addressing that question, and have started a new organization to help future startups play it straight. It’s called, Ethics in Entrepreneurship. Erika Cheung and Tyler Shulz are the founders, and they were actually the whistleblowers in the Theranos scandal, so they know just how good ideas can go very, very bad. The venture is looking to establish non-profit status, both in the US and Hong Kong, and will put together tools for ethical business decision-making, as well as connect startups with ethicists and similar experts to help them grow the right way, so that everyone, including the employees and the consumers, is given a fair shake. They’re accepting donations at the moment to help them get moving, and for the industry as a whole, hopefully this, is a step in the right direction.

[Apple Airpods 2 VS Samsung Galaxy Buds]

And now, on a lighter note, I know what you wanna know: Who wins? Airpods, or Galaxy Buds? Well, Apple just came out with their new Airpods 2, and you all already know I think Galaxy Buds have the old Airpods beat, but do the new Airpods change the game? I mean, in the Battle of the Earbuds, there can only be one, so which is it going to be? Well, the old Airpods gave you 2 hours of talk time, and 4 hours of music time, which Galaxy beats easily with 5 hours of talk time and 6 hours of music time. Plus, Galaxy Buds charge wirelessly, and the old Airpods? Not when they first came out! Oh, but now, the new Airpods do charge wirelessly, so that makes them just as good, right? Well, no, because the new Airpods still don’t last as long as Galaxy Buds; only 3 hours of talk time, and 5 hours of music time — an hour less than Samsung. So does that mean Galaxy wins? Not if you take the cases into consideration. The new Airpods case holds more charge than the Galaxy Buds case, so as long as you have the fully charged case with you, you actually still get more time with the Airpods. Whew! But what about sound quality? Well, according to CNET, Galaxy Buds take the cake when it comes to listening to music, but call quality is better on the Airpods. But get this: that was for the old Airpods, and according to Gizmodo, both the old and new Airpods sound better than Galaxy Buds! Who to believe? Well, if you’re an Android fangirl like me, you know the right answer. But alas, I know the Apple stans out there, have your answer as well. It all boils down to: Which phone do you have? Yeah, dude, they’re both good; just get the buds that match your phone. And until the next generation hits, we’ll call this one, a draw.

Hey all, Adesina here, and welcome to the Games Geeks Tech Talk! This week, we are tres intrigued by Google’s latest gaming tech announcement, but first, we hear self-driving cars are coming to the Big Apple?! Let’s get into it!

[Optimus Ride]

Now Alphabet’s Waymo had a beta launch of its autonomous vehicle taxi service last December, to serve a humble 400 people in Arizona. And this past week, Waymo announced it’ll be expanding – it just doesn’t know when. Well, when it comes to expanding into a major metropolis, it looks like startup Optimus Ride, has got Waymo beat, because the latest word, is that the new company will be launching its self-driving ride request service, in New York City! Now wait — don’t get too excited, it’s only going to be in one location; specifically, the Brooklyn Navy Yard. And that’s because NY State doesn’t yet allow self-driving cars for commercial use on public roads. However, since the Brooklyn Navy Yard is a private community, it works out. And it’s going to serve a lot more than just 400 customers. The Brooklyn Navy Yard encompasses 300 acres, and is home to over 400 businesses employing over 7,000 people! In addition to the Brooklyn launch, Optimus will also be launching in Fairfield California, and both locations should be up and running before summer hits.

Alright, so now let’s talk about this new gaming platform! Guys, Google just made the announcement this week at GDC, and while I am seeing a healthy dose of skepticism, at the same time, this could be huge: It’s called Stadia — like a fancy plural for stadium — and yes, this is what was formerly known as Project Stream. But now, it’s finally out of the development stage, and should be released later this year! And what’s the big deal? Well, the wow factor is that you can play video games, at high definition, on any computer, TV, tablet, or mobile phone, just using Google’s Chrome browser. Plus, you don’t need any additional hardware OR software, since the game is hosted in the cloud, and only the video portion of the game is being streamed to your device. Stadia is set to support 4K at 60 frames per second, with plans to upgrade to 8K and 120 fps in the future. And the GPU for Stadia is crazy, with a capacity of over 10.7 teraflops! And, despite all the amazing that Stadia appears to offer, as I said, there are skeptics. Mainly because Google has left out some important details:

1. We don’t know what games will be available, or if you can play games you already own on other platforms
2. How will the platform be monetized? We know it’ll be linked up to Youtube, so that you can play a game with a few clicks, directly from watching it. But will you then be directed to a paywall? Or will it be ad supported? Subscription based? Your guess is as good as mine!

And besides all that, we don’t have an exact launch date, or reviews on how good the stream really looks, for the average user, at home or on the go. If you’ve got data caps, that might be an issue too.

Either way, I’m still hyped to see it, and we’ll keep you updated.

Hey all! Adesina here for the GGT Talk, and the folding phones are coming! That’s right, a new generation of smartphones is hitting the market, and Samsung is one of the first on the scene. We’ll chat about that and more, so let’s get started.

(Samsung Unpacked Event)

SO, the Samsung Unpacked event recently went down this past Wednesday in San Francisco, and if you missed it, here’s the skinny: They announced new earbuds, the AI-powered Galaxy Home speaker, a new watch, and five new smartphones, including one that folds!

(Galaxy Buds, Galaxy Watch Active, Galaxy Home)

Now, the earbuds are called Galaxy Buds; they are completely wireless, and will be able to handle five hours of talking, or six hours of music playing, on a single charge, which, incidentally, is longer than Apple’s airpods. The new Galaxy Watch Active is all about user health, and it tracks blood pressure, among other things. And the new speaker is all about Samsung’s AI assistant Bixby, and should launch, by April.

And now, the phones: The Samsung Galaxy S10 will have four different models, and they are looking good! The S10e is the least costly of the foursome, starting at 750 dollars. It’s got a 5.8 inch display, preorders have already started, and it will be up for sale on March 8th. And on the other end, the most “out there” of the bunch is the S10 5G, and you guessed it, it’s 5G capable. Which, by the way, hasn’t even rolled out in most places yet, so there’s that. And the rest of the lineup is equally impressive, with the S10+ maxing out at an insane 1 terabyte of storage. Oh and did I mention, the S10 phones have a built-in Instagram mode where the camera can post automatically to Stories and you can even use the IG filters with it? Plus, the phone can also wirelessly charge other phones, which is pretty cool.

But what I really want to talk about is the phone that bends like a flip phone but has a screen as big as a tablet: the Samsung Galaxy Fold. Yes! Folding phones are here! And ok, Samsung technically is not the very first, but it will probably be the first that actually sells, because this baby is beautiful. Folded, it has a modest 4.6 inch display, but when you open it up, the fully bendable screen on the inside turns it into a 7.3 inch tablet! It’s got 2 batteries (one on each side), 12 gigs of RAM, 512 gigs of storage, and it has no fewer than six cameras: One on the front, two on the back, and 3 on the inside. This thing is like Selfiegeddon; all it needs is for it to actually be able to take pictures with all six cameras at once, and Instagram might just explode! Now fancy tech like this is expensive: the Galaxy Fold starts at nearly 2 grand, so I’m guessing unless you were already planning to buy both a smartphone and a tablet separately, that’s out of most people’s budgets. But if do you want to be one of the ‘folding elite,’ it hits stores on April 26th, and will be available in black, silver, green and blue, with varying hinge colors.

Hey GGT Fam! Adesina here, and this week, I’m gonna talk techie to ya: from self-driving cars, to social media, to a pill — with a needle in it?! Let’s get this baby rollin!

So first, autonomous vehicles: This tech has been a major disruption to the auto industry; with unfortunate and massive layoffs at General Motors, as well as exciting developments like being able to hail your own self-driving taxi with Alphabet’s Waymo. But it also has implications that are seeping into other industries, and there are new companies cropping up that you might not have even heard of. One of them, Aurora, is a startup that’s raised about 620 million dollars, including securing an investor that you definitely have heard of: E-commerce giant, Amazon. And, as Forbes pointed out in a recent article, Amazon’s investment isn’t likely just about the dividends. With all the shipping and delivering that’s at the core of its business, autonomous vehicles could be a windfall for the company (and it’s not like they really need one)

Well, the Bezos empire aside, Aurora isn’t what you’d expect from an auto maker; they don’t plan to make their own cars. Instead, they aim to assist other companies in developing their driverless vehicles – companies like Volkswagen and Hyundai. And as for what they could do for Amazon? Well, I still haven’t seen any of those drones they promised, delivering my packages just yet, so maybe we should be looking out for driverless delivery trucks instead?

Next, let’s switch gears from Amazon to another juggernaut: Facebook. But this time, here’s something that might benefit you, especially if you’re the type to run your mouth! Because now you can take it all back, on Facebook messenger. After receiving criticism last year, when some of Zuckerberg’s Facebook messages mysteriously disappeared and revealed a capability that was only reserved for the Facebook elite (while the rest of us plebes were left to wallow in the ignominy of our ill-advised and undeletable messages), Facebook has finally added that take-it-back functionality for the average user.

So now, when it’s 2am and you drunk-message your boss what you REALLY think, as long as you wise up within a ten-minute time limit, you can unsend the message. But be warned: After you delete it, everyone on the thread will see a notification that a message was removed, so it still might open a can of worms, but at least those worms won’t say “You’re fired!” To try it out, long-press on the text bubble, and follow the directions on the screen. Happy un-texting!

Our last story is something right out of sci-fi, with some diabetes-related med tech that’s all at once really cool, really helpful, and also…kind of creepy! Researchers at MIT have been working on a pill to replace regular insulin injections, and it’s not like any pill you’ve seen. This one — has a needle inside it! So first, let’s talk about the exterior: the pill’s shape was designed after, and looks like, a tortoise. And it’s not just for looks; the special shape allows the pill to orient itself once inside the stomach, to ensure proper delivery of the insulin. And here’s where it gets uncomfortable: the outer pill dissolves, to reveal: a miniscule spring-loaded needle, which is injected into you, on the inside of your stomach!

Now apparently this doesn’t hurt, but STILL! Tiny animal-shaped spring-loaded needle pills that seek out and inject us from the inside? What?! Didn’t Neo have something like that crawl into him in the Matrix? Well, regardless, as you can imagine this would be a great way to advance diabetes care, so we do hope the technology succeeds. No word yet on when the public will get to see these tiny heroes in a half shell, but we’ll give you updates, as we get them.

Hola GGTers! Adesina here, and you know what? It’s been too long since we’ve talked video games, and I think it’s time to grab that controller!

But first, maybe a little music to set the mood? Well, if you like to tune your groove with Spotify, the streaming service will soon be adding a new feature, that you might appreciate. Now, Confession: sometimes I don’t like music streaming services. And that’s because sometimes, when you’re tuning into playlists, you end up hearing a few artists, that you really don’t like. Well, Spotify has listened to our woes, and they’re currently testing a new option on its latest iOS app: BLOCKING. Yeah, you know how you can block your ex, or that weird dude who keeps adding you even though you only met him ONCE, on Facebook? Well, soon you can block music artists who rub you the wrong way, on Spotify. And once you mute an artist, their songs will never come up in playlists, libraries, OR radio stations. As I mentioned, the feature is already being tested selectively on iOS; but no word yet, on when it will launch across platforms.

Next, it’s time for all my Android fangirls and boys to get hyped, because the Samsung S10 series is set to release in less than a month! So far, we see there will be 3 versions: the S10, a more affordable S10E, and the big and beautiful S10+. All three feature the trendy hole punch selfie cam instead of a notch; that means slightly more screen for you screen fiends, and the S10 Plus will boast TWO selfie cameras. And on the backs of these fetching phones, is not one, not two, but three cameras — that is, on the two pricier phones — the S10E will still only have two. AND, what I’m MOST excited about, is that this S10, could be a GREAT gaming phone. According to TechRadar, Samsung applied for a trademark just this past Monday, for technology called a Neuro Game Booster. Which most likely uses AI to maximize graphics and battery performance. So be on the lookout: Samsung will make the official reveal on February 20th, and the S10 could be your next gaming phone.

And finally, Resident Evil 2! And if you haven’t heard yet, this is the Resident Evil we have been waiting for: it’s gorgeous, it’s sleek, it’s freaking difficult, but not too difficult, and it retains all the gory goodness that made us fall in love with it in ‘98. Only now, it’s supercharged, the graphics are YES, and when I played it, it scared the living daylights out of me. Now, I know we’ve struggled with this franchise in the past; after the glory of Resident Evil 4, a lot of fans were disappointed with the ones that followed. But, this remake takes the series back to its horror roots, giving you that sense of being out of control, and putting you in an environment that is one of the scariest yet. Now if you are listening to this on our first broadcast, RE 2 isn’t out yet, but on January 25th the wait will be over! And in the meantime, you can try out a 30-minute demo on Playstation and Xbox, so get to it!

Hey GGT fam! Adesina here, and happy New Year! I hope that 2019 has been showing you love so far, and this week, we are kicking the new year off right, with some CES goodness! Let’s get started!

First up, do you ever get carsick? Automaker Audi, wants to help. But they’re doing it in a very counterintuitive way: with Virtual Reality! Now I say counterintuitive, because one of the major complaints about VR, is that it actually causes motion sickness. But according to those who tried it out at The Consumer Electronics Show this past week, it actually works.

The technology utilizes the Oculus Go, and the demo involves racing around a track at 90 miles per hour. The way it works, is that it syncs up what you are watching in VR, with the movement of the vehicle. You see, one of the biggest factors in getting car sick, is sitting in the back seat and not being able to really see where you are going; it’s that disconnect between what you are seeing and what the body is feeling, that makes you nauseous. So in effect, the two things that make some people motion sick — either riding in the backseat and not seeing where they’re going, or playing a VR game and not feeling the movement they are seeing — those two experiences, when brought TOGETHER, cancel eachother out, and voila! No motion sickness! Plus, since you get to play a video game, it’s also pretty fun.

Now, Audi is not aiming to keep this tech to themselves; they actually formed a brand new company, Holoride, to develop the system. And their goal is bring VR to the backseat of any car, no matter the maker. Of course, there’s still a lot of development to go, so don’t expect to find it bundled in your next car just yet. Holoride aims to launch the VR experience publicly, within the next 3 years.

Well, you can flush this next idea right down the can! Unless of course, you’d like a little assistance when you’re gracing the porcelain throne? Well, Kohler thinks that’s just the help we all need, and they’re putting an AI Assistant …in the toilet. Yep, there’s new gadget in town, and it’s called the Kohler Numi 2.0. And you guessed it: It’s a smart toilet. Making its debut at CES this year, the Numi 2.0 has surround sound speakers, dynamic ambient lighting, personalized cleaning and drying functions, a heated seat, and if all that isn’t enough, it can even talk to you, courtesy of an integrated Amazon Alexa voice assistant. I mean, who hasn’t wanted a friend to chat with in the bathroom? Isn’t that why us ladies are always going to the restroom in packs?

Speaking of packs, Numi is no lone wolf. This is one smart toilet that has lots of friends, in the form of other connected smart bathroom appliances: from a bathtub, to a lighted mirror, a three-piece vanity, and more. Truly, you will never be alone again. Not even in the bathroom. 2019 is gonna be one wild ride.
