The Tales of the Compass Rose are a series of 8 Dungeon World scenarios set in the town of Cadastral. The focus of the campaign is the Compass Rose - an artifact that keeps demons from invading this reality and devouring the essence of the dead god who’s body is the foundation of the world.

For this event they crafted the town of Cadastral, the Tower of the Compass Rose, several places of power, forest scatter, a crystal powered airship, a variety of props, and numerous quality of play tokens.

The event was tested by library patrons and run at the SCARAB Gaming Convention Jan 17-20, 2020, in Columbia SC. It will be run for patrons summer 2020. Check out our pictures!

Gaslands in Action

In Games in Schools and Libraries episode 116 Donald Dennis and Chris Bell talk about what’s been going on in the library lately.

First the pair discuss the Gaslands, a miniatures game that uses Hot Wheels scale vehicles, from Osprey Games. They touch on how it plays as well as customizing cars, making terrain, and how they are using it at the library.

Forge Three Keys to win!

Next they talk about Keyforge, a unique deck game by Richard Garfield. After talking about why it is useful to libraries they also discuss a bit about the history or technology and game manufacturing.

The Detective game, with obligatory cup of coffee. And another bonus game that slipped in when nobody was looking.

The final review is about Detective, a Modern Crime Boardgame that plays like a series of episodes from a particularly intense police procedural TV show. A great gaming experience, but only really suitable for particular game environments.

A good Detective board, though we had another dry erase board as well, and lots of paper notes. Don’t look too closely, because there may be spoilers.

To wrap up they talk about ShushCon (March 22-24) and the GSL Trade Day (March 22). Our topic this year will be using story games and RPGs to support your other activities.

Sarah hosts a seminar on Tabletop Games and Literacy. The skills people associate with Literacy are actually found in all subject areas, but need to be integrated by content teachers. The Tabletop Game Unit, regardless of being a Literacy focused Unit, is applicable to other subject areas with fine tuning and understanding outcomes.

Additionally, she runs a Tabletop Game Club that focuses on engaging with the larger gaming community, not just getting together and playing board games. In Games in Schools and Libraries episode 90 Donald Dennis and Stephanie Frey talk about their experiences taking gaming on the road. Over the course of SCARAB 2018, in Columbia SC, Stephanie ran more than 120 people through escape rooms and Donald ran a wide variety of RPGs. The pair also competed in the RPG Pharaoh's Challenge, taking first and second place for Game Mastering excellence.
