Need for Speed: The Run features a linear story mode, which places the player in the shoes of Jackson “Jack” Rourke. After an incident leaves him in bad standing with a mysterious crime organization and almost gets him crushed in a car crusher, Jack becomes a marked man and must flee for his survival. The consequence of his situation leaves him owing large sums of money, which he cannot pay on his own. He is directed to a massive illegal street racing event called “The Run” by an associate, Sam Harper. Sam places her bet on him, and promises to give him 10% of the prize money, informing him that the 10% of the total prize money, $25,000,000, is enough to secure his freedom from the organization, but he has to beat 210 other drivers to the finish line to win. To complicate things, he is in debt to both the police and the criminal organization, and both want to make sure that he never finishes the race.The race starts out with Jack picking one of five vehicles-a BMW M3 GTS, Nissan Fairlady 240Z, Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake, Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, or Porsche 911 Carrera S. He may use gas stations to change between vehicles of the tier they are driving, namely 4 and 5. After escaping from San Francisco by driving off an unfinished bridge, Jack is required to make it to Las Vegas in the top 150 racers, but upon arrival is nearly arrested after cops shut down the city. However, he manages to escape, but is nearly crushed by a semitrailer truck. He manages to acquire a new vehicle-a Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0, Lamborghini Gallardo, or Aston Martin V12 Vantage. Jack then has to make it to Chicago in the top 50. Upon arrival in Chicago, Marcus Blackwell, Jack’s biggest rival and the main antagonist of the game, uses his connections to the mob to organize a “welcome committee”. After Jack escapes from the helicopter temporarily, he then acquires a stolen police car, but is pursued by the helicopter again. He must stay out of the spotlight of the helicopter to avoid getting the vehicle shot and destroyed, but ends up crashing in a train yard.Jack then escapes from the overturned police car before a freight train runs him down. After escaping the train, He then can choose between three Audis- a Quattro 20V, RS4, or R8. He then escapes Chicago, driving through an industrial trainyard filled with high explosives. After crashing through the glass of a warehouse, Jack wrecks the helicopter by slamming into its tail and sending it exploding into the side of another warehouse. After this, Jack is directed to and see a man named Yuri, and can choose between three supercars-a Porsche 918 RSR, Pagani Huayra, or Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4, thus giving him access to Tier 5 cars. After defeating the other racers, Jack makes it to New York in the top 2. He races Marcus Blackwell (who drives a heavily modified Tier 6 Aston Martin One-77) who is then wrecked after he flips his car. As a result, Jack wins The Run and claims the $25,000,000 jackpot.
