So, if you’re considering investing in that startup website your little brother keeps talking about, you may want to reconsider. The fact that we’ve hit a bubble in the web industry is just that, a fact. And to prove it, there’s even a new board game.

Startup Fever is currently on Kickstarter and is about 60% to goal. Now the game itself is fully developed, but Louis Perrochon, the designer, needs some extra money to make it pretty. This is something we can all appreciate, as ugly games are, well, ugly and thus more likely to stay in the back of the game closet.

Now Louis is throwing a little extra sugar into the mix if you’re willing to help him out.

Pledge $1+ and you get your normal Kickstarter updates on where the Startup Fever! project stands.

Pledge $10+ and your name will appear as a supporter in the official Startup Fever! rule book.

Pledge $50+ or more and you get your name in the rule book and a “free” copy of Startup Fever! when it comes out. (A theoretical $60 value.)

Pledge $60+, the “Nerd Level” and you get all the above as well at the Startup Fever! Venture Capital expansion, complete with lawyers.

Pledge $100+ and you get 2 copies of the expansion.

$150+ gets you the Beta version of Startup Fever!, a retail copy, the expansion, and your name in the rule book.

$250+ gets you all the above, and you can suggest new PG-13 style events to be added to the game. (Not sure how this will work, but ok.)

$500+ gets you all that other stuff, and Louis Perrochon will personally attend your game night to explain the game to you and your friends (if you live ~50 miles from Palo Alto.) You’ll also get a 4.5kg Toblerone, that’s just short of 10lbs. of chocolate for you American folk.

Bonus: $500+ level option for those first 10 (and 2 are already taken) who pledge at this level, you’ll get a Beta version of the game, even if the funding falls through which is possible, but at 60% with 2 months to go looks unlikely to happen.

So yeah, using a startup to fund a startup game about startups. Nope, no bubble here. Move along folks.

But seriously, watch the video about Startup Fever! While the game looks somewhat interesting, it also looks a bit like Die Macher to me. Or am I wrong?

Dominion is just as good of a two player game as it is for five people. Recently we made it our goal to play through all of the kingdom cards from the original Dominion, Seaside, Prosperity, Alchemy and Intrigue. We pick 10 kingdom cards to start with and then after every game, we cycle out the most used card, the least used card and one other card and random and replace those with cards we haven’t used yet. This keeps the game excited and allows us to try all the Kindgom cards.

Forbidden Island is a cooperative game where “adventurers are on a do-or-die mission to capture four sacred treasures from the ruins of a perilous paradise” before it gets flooded. It is a great introductory game or a filler game. It is really easy to teach and really easy to play since there is not a lot of thinking involved with each turn (Even the Legendary difficulty setting really isn’t that bad). It is also a very quick playing game, its rated at about 30 minutes long.

Stronghold is one of my favorite two player games! It centers around the storming of a castle (I have always played outside the castle, the invader, and Brian has always played inside, the defender). The artwork on the board is really awesome. I also like the time convention; where the longer the invader takes to prepare his troops and attacks, then the longer the defender get to prepare his defenses It looks more confusing than it actually is, the designers did a great job of creating cards outlining the six phase cards. It is such a great two player game that I am scared to try it with three or four people!

Factory Fun is my least favorite two player game. Okay, to be honest it’s horrible as a two player game but is great for four people. With only the two of us, there wasn’t many options for machines nor the feeling of competition between us. Many times we would both flip over a machine and we both decided not to use either of them. The game ended up being pretty boring with only two people; its such a shame because with four people it is really fun.

New World: A Carcassone Game is an easy to learn, interesting to play game. I love this version of Carcassone with two players because it has the surveyors which prevent any one player from sitting on road or in a town for too long without finishing it. It is much like Carcassone except in this version you start on the East coast and explore westwards and it has surveyors that can give you bonuses if you complete something and the surveyors are in the same column as your last placed meeple. I don’t think Brian likes this game as much because he can never draw the tiles he needs, and I always get what I need.

Hive is a cute two player game that Brian got for me at last year’s convention. The object of the game is to surround your opponent’s queen bee before they can do the same to you. This is a quick game to learn and play but it can involve some thinking about how to maneuver your bugs so that you win.

As we play more two player games I will share our experiences about them with you. In the mean time, enjoy gaming!!

Mark and I recorded this video for Tobago back in the spring in AZ. It’s a great explanation of the rules and it’s a game I really like. I hope you enjoy the video.

Unless you’ve been too wrapped up in World Cup fever, you’ve probably noticed there were a few news stories about E3 and all the new gaming options that are coming out in the near future. One of these stories is the release of the Xbox Kinect (formerly Project Natal) and the Kinect series of games.

Kinect (pronounced: connect) is an auxiliary device for your Xbox that allows you to use your body as the controller in order to play games. To drive a car you just put your hands out like they’re on a steering wheel. To ride a skateboard, you stand sideways and lean back, forth, forward and backward. You are literally part of the game.

So what is this fancy new tech device doing on a board game site? Well, my friends, the Kinect has one other capability that has not been discussed all that much. Kinect allows you to connect with other Xbox users and play games, chat, and interact with them in an almost Skype or Apple Facetime way.

This is where I see the Kinect really taking off in the future. Not with body contortioning video games, but with the ability to play simpler interactive games with others.

Xbox Live and the games available therein have already been one of the drivers behind the system (think of playing Halo or Modern Warfare alone… I shudder at the thought.) Now we can actually see and interact physically with our online friends, now we can play those games in person (sort of) and actually see and talk to them while doing so.

I foresee a time coming soon where I’ll be able to boot up my Xbox (when I buy one) load up a game of Tichu, Tobago, or Small World, and connect with Olivia if Florida, Dad in St. Louis, and my brother Mike in Mangalore, and play a round or two. That connection and interaction, that ability to keep in touch with family and friends regardless of distance, that’s where Kinect will really shine.

OK, here are the details in quick form. They’re going to give the iPad (pre-loaded with their Small World App) away to the winner of the 2,000,000th game on their online gaming area. They’re already above 19,800,000 so if you’re not signed up with them yet, I strongly recommend you get over there quick.

If you’re not the winner of the 2millionth game, fear not. The other players in that game each get an iPod Touch. Alright, good luck to everyone, and get gaming.
