It was seven years in the making, but when there are just the two developers with an insatiable desire to create something wonderful, time is often – wistfully – of no consequence. Except, perhaps, in an industry where high polygon counts, detailed textures, narrative development, and the perception of value are concerned. It’s going to have to be good to garner an audience. The introduction sees you returning to your home town having received a letter from your father. Well, maybe. The letter is...

When each title is discussed, it’s in frames of philosophy, politics, humanity, and what happens when all of these things crash together. I’d consider Bioshock to be a classic and everyone considers System Shock 2 to literally be one of the best games ever. So, as we take the next step on the Shock timeline with Infinite, it has a lot to live up to – the expectation bar is raised high. Discussed: Pretty much everything, including spoilers for most games in the series; whether the “FPS” side of Infinite is good...

Much of my childhood was spent in the underworld, constructing deviously designed dungeons and amassing an army of powerful creatures to do my bidding. I’ll be brief – despite obviously craving the accolade, Impire is most certainly not the new Dungeon Keeper. It shares certain thematic elements – the underground lair, the quest for world domination and the evil demon at the heart of the tale, but it lacks the charm and wit that made Bullfrog’s classic such a joy....

Intrigue. Love? It’s resulted in a lengthy podcast – just under an hour – and it’s full of spoilers (not game-destroying, but they’re there), but we’ve covered as much ground as possible without boring you to tears. For Jake Elliott and Tamas Kemenczy of Cardboard Computer, their medium is the strange blend of audio, video, text, and interaction of digital games. As their earlier game Ruins showed, the studio has a penchant for the poetic and the dreamlike, and you’ll find those elements in spades in their latest (and currently ongoing) work Kentucky Route Zero. It’s an adventure game in five parts – the first released in December 2012, with later instalments to follow this year. Firmly on the quiet, contemplative...

It’s actually something I’d already thought about quite a bit (some of this is going to be directly lifted from another half written essay), so I thought it was worth giving him a decent reply… I’ve attempted to pin the answer down to this a couple of times before, and I’ve given up half way through each time. This means that I frequently play major releases late in the year, or not at all. So when one considers the ‘big’ games released this year, I have yet to play Dishonored, Guild Wars 2, Spec Ops, DotA 2, and a host of other critically acclaimed behemoths. The overriding theme of the titles I have played this year is of hope souring into disappointment. For all the innovation in control, sound and visuals, and with improved technologies and enhanced interaction, it’s still the same old same, again and again and again and again ad nauseum. Occasionally they do spring something new on you. Something that loosely uses the term ‘original’. Alas it’s not nearly often enough. It’s contextually unfortunate that 2011 was such an outstanding year for games because while 2012 has been home to some fantastic releases, it’s a bit Dave Ja Vu.
