Nice piece on Mass Effect 2. I agree completely. I was quite disappointed by the game. All the space operatic tension of the first game was gone.

To me it all felt a bit like a "Starbucks version" of the first game - all homogenised and a bit dull, a lifeless universe filled with specially designated areas for talking/exploring and areas for shooting.

There were quite a few brilliant bits, to be fair, but not nearly enough.

The first time I played Mass Effect 1 I played with the male Shepard, the second time the female one - I was amazed how much better the female voicework was. I thought the male Shepard sounded like a zombie.

Heh. Nice to see the proper game explosions: Nothing on the screen but smoke, and about a 50% chance of having seriously underestimated the blast radius and killed the firer.

Everybody needs good Neighbours like us, as perhaps when you become good Neighbours you can become, good, friends. We'd like to stay forever, Home and Away, with you each day. But we tied your aliens down, sport. Did you think we would leave you dying? There's room in our skyranger for two. No worries mate.

I'd stand behind Craig if I were you. Then he might get hit by "friendly fire" and then you can move up in the world.

And then you can stand behind Ed and something similar.

Mutiny FTW!

Phew. Good work blowing up that cyberdisc before it could eviscerate you.

I think it's funny how samey the locations are. There's actually more variety in mission settings in the much maligned X-Com Apocalypse, despite it being set in only one (mega)city.
