The industrious community on Etsy will take any opportunity to fill a perceived need, and friends do we ever need the Dock Sock.

The Nintendo Switch has a potentially serious flaw. Some owners say that their Switches are arriving with a warped dock, the dock itself can potentially scratch the screen with its rough harden plastic edges, Especially if its a gift for a younger member of the household who may not be as gentle removing the switch from the dock or re-docking it.

There are many great sellers on Etsy with unique designs to choose such as:

Why I’m addicted to buying random Steam keys

Think about your fondest gaming memory. There’s a chance the game that provided it was an object of desire for months prior, a hotly anticipated title whose every PR beat you pored over in the games press.

For some titles you might actually have heard about, check out the best PC games.

More likely, however, it was something sweet and unexpected – a bolt from the blue for which you weren’t quite prepared, and all the more potent for it. But where can one find such an experience in 2016?

It’s an oft-observed byproduct of the modern hype cycle that games suffer at the hands of the expectations they generate. Flashy teasers, trailers and early previews build to a fever pitch that peaks before a game has launched, giving it the unenviable task at release of matching up to a version of itself that exists only inside players’ heads.

Excellence is therefore greeted with little more than an approving nod; any whiff of it having under-delivered hits harder, provokes a stronger reaction, and sticks in the mind longer.

The idea of a pleasant surprise in gaming is rapidly becoming a thing of the past, then. When was the last time you bought a game you knew absolutely nothing about? Steam makes it almost impossible, emblazoning each game page with a Metacritic rating and all manner of trailers and media pull-quotes.

If that’s not enough to get a crystal clear picture of what you’re buying, there’s no doubt a full playthrough just a few clicks away on YouTube. In some cases, the game might even be available on Early Access – just so you can well and truly exhaust your interest in it before development is even completed.

This is no treatise against people being given the information necessary to make informed purchases. It’s a preferable model that people going in uninformed and spending good money on rubbish. However, without getting too Old Man Yells at Cloud about this, over the years I’ve bought some of the best (and, admittedly, worst) games I’ve ever played purely based on their box art. To think this kind of discovery is dying saddens me a little.

I hadn’t considered this all so deeply when I first started buying random Steam keys, but I guess the above is why it so quickly appealed to me. I started out with a selection of 10 random keys from Polish key-selling site G2A.com, the going rate of which is around £2.00 – a bargain 20p per game.

But like most cheap things, there’s a dark side. Keys are often ill-gotten, with resellers posing as journalists or YouTubers to con developers. Bulk-buying cut-price indie game bundles is another way resellers can harm devs, driving down a game’s value long after its inclusion in the promotion.

Knowing this, there’s obviously some guilt involved in taking part. However, I take some comfort in the fact that the games included are invariably those whose stock among the PC gaming public is already pretty low. In fact, none of the games I’ve got through these bundles are titles I’d even heard of previously – let alone considered buying.

But that’s the joy of the system. Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V-ing your codes into Steam becomes an exciting process of unwrapping, each title an unknown quantity but maybe, just maybe, this one’s secretly the best game ever. In this digital age, it’s the closest analogue I’ve found to flicking through the racks in a second-hand game shop.

So what do you get for your money? Well, before anything else, you get the titles. Mine included Space Scaven, Zenodyne R, and Cubium Dreams – each one a tantalising title of endless potential, worth every one of those twenty pennies before I’d even booted it up. And you can only imagine the excitement when I saw one of my codes was for a game called 1953: KGB Unleashed. Imagine those crazy cats at the KGB, without a leash! It simply beggars belief.

The point is, this is where the true value in these bundles lies. There’s something pure and wonderful about it, something reminiscent of sitting in the back of your Dad’s car clutching a game you’ve bought on a whim because it was £3.00 and the cover’s kind of cool. You know nothing about what you’ve just bought, but in that moment it could be anything.

But enough romanticising. What sort of games do you actually get? It’s an odd mix, but many of the same types of games – or indeed, duplicates of the same titles – seem to crop up in multiple bundles. First you get the avant-garde indies, like the 30-minute-long exploration adventure NORTH, which casts you as a refugee in a bewildering cyberpunk world.

You can also expect plenty of older classics (or not-quite classics) such as X-COM precursor UFO: Enemy Unknown or Enclave, a positively ancient-feeling hack-‘n’-slash released by Payday and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons developers Starbreeze back in 2002.

Along with a bunch of other mid-tier indies you’ve never heard of, there are inevitably some dregs: generic-looking RPG Maker games, wince-inducing ‘comedy’ titles, and some amateurish, half-made junk I’m frankly astonished ever made it beyond Greenlight.

But even these are worth playing, if only to remind yourself what a truly bad game is like. In the past, purely by law of averages and a lack of reliable information, all of us had a healthy helping of rubbish in our gaming diets. Nowadays, releasing a true turd makes little financial sense; its only audience being those intending to post derisive Let’s Plays for the rest of us to scoff at, while saving our limited money and free time for games that guarantee at least competence.

Now you might be sitting there and thinking that you’re perfectly happy playing good games, thank you very much. And that makes perfect sense – arguably a lot more so than my romantic, nostalgic, and possibly pretentious attempt to recapture some intangible, youthful spirit of the unknown. But if you’ve ever looked back with fondness on the days when you went into a game essentially blind, with no expectation or prior knowledge, then I’d urge you to give one of these bundles a try.

Sometimes, it’s good to play something truly awful. Sometimes, it’s just nice not to know what you’re getting.

Mark Darrah, executive producer of BioWare’s upcoming Anthem, has given some details on how Anthem’s beta that kicks off later this week will differ from the final game.

In a series of responses on Twitter (via Kotaku), Darrah explained many of these differences. The demo will not place players at the beginning of the game, but at some point in the middle instead. There won’t be tutorials (or at least not like there will be in the main game) or the “pilot picker” - the game’s character creator. The game’s economy and overall balance will reportedly be much different in the final game as well.

Because the team branched off development on this demo and the main game back in December, the demo will be somewhat of a “snapshot” of what the game was at the end of last year. Because of this, there will be six weeks worth of less bug fixes, only one story arc, the mission/stronghold/freeplay balance will be off, the PC controls (specifically flight controls) will be less nuanced, and things will have been renamed for clarity in the main game.

So how’s the Anthem demo different from the game?
- we start you in the middle
- no tutorials
- no pilot picker
- balance is super different
- economy is completely different
- 6 weeks less bug fixes
When responding to various questions on Twitter, Darrah claimed the microtransactions that will be present in the game will be for vanity items that can also be earned using in-game currency, that the demo would be easier than the final game in general, and that loot will be instanced, so what players earn at the end of a mission will all be of the same rarity, but won’t all be the exact same loot.

Banjo Kazooie One of my favored groups of matches to play growing up for me was with the Banjo Kazooie show developed by UK based development firm Rare for the N64. Needless to say, the games were. That is a great way of putting it. As magical as it is codename PROJECT: DREAM. Banjo Kazooie and it is sequel Banjo Tooie chronicled the experiences of an anthropomorphic stand clad in a blue backpack having an ever loving and picky sidekick, Kazooie the bird since they recovered Jiggies, bewitching Jigsaw bits and fought the evil witch, Gruntilda. For me growing up, a day playing with these games was enough to keep me amused beyond expectations. They were fast, good looking, but above all, they were fun. This was Rare's golden years creating games for Nintendo systems, until they sold out to that bastard firm Microsoft. They have been pumping out classics such as with the Donkey Kong Country trilogy, Jet Force Gemini, Battletoads, you name it. However, after the release of Banjo Tooie in 2000, the Banjo Kazooie series has been about as dead as a doornail and almost to the point where Rare refuses to accept the games actually existed. There was a projected Banjo for the Nintendo Gamecube as well as some vids have been shown in conventions, but that was before Rare left from Nintendo into the devilish pits of suck home in Microsoft. Then, near with the end of last year, shocking released a teaser trailer showing Banjo and Kazooie's Return. FINALLY! - This teaser's most prominent feature had been with the more abstract redesigns they gave to with the stand and bird. While many individuals Complained, I really liked the new look. The new trailer really looked awesome. There was with the classic theme in with the background, they showed Banjo with Kazooie for moves, like attempting to open a door having her beak and use it like a jackhammer. There was even a mentioning of it towards the end of Tooie. Would that be the name of it? We all waited for more hints to this puzzle. Things stayed real quiet for some time. Every single time I went into IGN hoping into find more movies or pics of the game, and there was nothing. Then, in mid might 2008, came with the one blow to this game this wouldn't only shatter with the hopes of this one particularly, but would completely ass rape one of my and several others most loved games to play growing up. Wtf is this. This isn't Banjo Kazooie. This is some half assed cliche racing game. This isn't a Banjo platformer. Vehicles. Yes, you hear me right. This whole Banjo game revolves around building vehicles, driving vehicles, and racing at vehicles on land, water, and air into get Jiggies. I am certain with the name is Banjo Threeie at least, right? Nope.

Banjo kazooie coming to super smash bros ultimate?

Long standing Fans of the banjo kazooie franchise have been left speculating about what Nintendo could have planned for the retro franchise One long-standing rumour (and fan boy hope) is that Banjo Kazooie could be coming to super smash bros ultimate. Fans are hoping that the Nintendo will reveal Banjo Kazooie as a dlc character any day now. The beloved character from the N64 classic also featured in an alleged leak and cryptic social media posts Nintendo have already used King K. Rool and donkey kong from the donkey kong franchise a character created by RARE the same developers who created Banjo Kazooie Evidence leading to the conclusion that banjo kazooie will feature in smash is mounting.Nintendo recently renewed its trademark for banjo kazooie leading speculation that they have plans for the long forgotten franchise. This is probably the most Substantial Evidence of all. There is no denying that banjo and Kazooie have moveset potential. It is literally all there and with banjo Kazooie originating on the same console as the original smash the movements and controls will basically be right at home. The neutral B could be Kazooie charging eggs and the longer it’s charged for the type of eggs change from ice eggs, normal eggs or fire eggs and the like. The down B could be Kazooie carrying banjo for more speed. The up B could be Kazooie flying while lifting banjo. It’s all there Phil spencer he owner of Xbox who has ties with Microsoft who has ties with rare has stated in tweets that he would be fine with banjo and Kazooiein smash. He has stated this twice. Once during smash 4 dlc speculation period (which is where we are now during ultimate) and smash ultimates reveal (which is the game in question). Nintendo and Microsoft have had a great working relationship Recently and if the roster was finalised in 2015 then they were close then since Minecraft for Wii U released in December that year. If it was finalised this year then Minecraft crossplay was being promoted. That proves their close working relationship. And they have worked on rare ip before as stated in the tweet which makes up for 2016/17 having no specifities as well as the Mario mashup pack and Minecraft for the new 3ds in 2017 as well as probably being worked on in 2016 which also proves their working relationship. They are popular and there is no denying. When people say banjo Kazooie was the Mario 64 spiritual sequel I And mostly everyone else immediately assume that means it improved on certain aspects of the game as what sequels do. Even though we don’t have the ballot results we don’t need them as we know they scored well on it. They were probably planned to be put in smash melee probably Because of there popularity in general. They scored high on the brawl request ballot and probably scored high on the melee one as well. And what I can immediately assume from the fact that Phil spencer tweeted was that he’d actually think it’d be cool to see how they play. Nintendo probably likes them too as they let rare make a sequel. Sakurai probably likes them too as he likes Minecraft which features a banjo Kazooie skin Click here for more info

Fantasy survival team-shooter sandbox Rend enters early access

Survival sandbox games aren’t exactly rare, but the Norse myth-themed Rend has my attention, thanks to its intriguing structure. Similar to Ark: Survival Evolved, players build, craft, level, fight (or tame) monsters and expand. The big difference here is that the players are split into three rival factions of a few dozen players online at time with an ultimate, server-resetting goal in sight. No getting ganked by random jerks here – you and your faction are in this boat together, and after watching some streamed gameplay (and asking the devs a few questions), this one is on my radar.

Premature Evaluation is the weekly column in which we explore the wilds of early access. This week, Fraser’s getting hunted down by streamers in Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale. It’s a sci-fi FPS in a lovely alien theme park that also happens to be a massive murder arena full of angry supersoldiers.

Islands of Nyne bills itself as a battle royale for the competitive crowd – specifically the FPS lot – so as I hurtled into my first game, it felt a little bit like I was crashing a stranger’s party. The third-person, messy battle royales that are sprouting up everywhere leave a lot of room for luck and second chances, but Islands of Nyne is all about precision, speed and being shot in the head by a Twitch streamer. It’s been a struggle.

While aesthetically lovely, online swashbuckler Sea Of Thieves probably didn’t have enough meat on its bones at launch. Today’s update, Cursed Sails, is a bit paradoxical then – its roaming crews of evil skeleton sailors add a major new NPC threat to the oceans, just ironically without flesh. Adding a new time-limited quest, plus a goodly chunk of new things to see and do to the base game, and it’s live right now and free for all you scurvy sea-dogs.

When the Overwatch League’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award was handed to Jjonak of the New York Excelsior, no one was really surprised. His Zenyatta play has undoubtedly been immensely valuable; a key factor in New York’s impressive 34-6 win-loss ratio. The amount of damage he deals far outstrips every other Zenyatta player in the League, and often that of DPS players, too – all without neglecting his healing duties.

Nonetheless, the definition of “valuable” is a subjective one, and the accolade is a useful lens for thinking about what parts of the game and its culture we consider to be of value, and what parts we tend to dismiss or overlook. (more…)

Descent-like hoverbike FPS Forsaken rides again today, remastered by Nightdive. A fascinating relic from an era of over-filtered textures and lurid coloured lighting, Forsaken Remastered takes the ‘6 degrees of freedom’ concept and makes it faster, louder and dumber. Fun, too, especially in its many messy multiplayer modes. While most of Nightdive’s remasters have been as authentic to the source material as possible, this one breaks from the norm, combining the remarkably different PC and N64 versions of the game into a single gestalt whole.

Now you may, as developers Ninja Theory today added official support for VR goggles for free. Even if cybergoggs did work with my peepers, I think I might steer clear of jacking into Celtic hallucinations. Though I spent much of last night hugging the toilet while drifting in and out of sleep, so perhaps I’ve already lived it.

The new Turtle Beach Stealth 300 is a bit of a weird one. It’s a wired headset that comes with a 3.5mm audio connection, but due to its built-in bass amplifier, it also needs to be charged via USB every 40 hours or so – something that, normally, you only need to do if it’s wireless.

Straight off the bat, then, the Stealth 300 is more of a faff than almost every other wired headset on the planet – except, maybe, the Steelseries Arctis Pro and its slightly convoluted GameDAC setup. Are the extra bass beats worth the extra hassle to make it one of the best gaming headsets around? Let’s find out.

Stealing trash is all fun and games until someone loses a town, as Donut County will demonstrate when it at long last launches on August 28th. Greedy racoons with remote-controlled holes are sucking up trash, see, but we get a bit carried away with it and… turns out, trash pandas can be a real force of nature when they’re bored on the toilet fiddling with their iPad. The curious object-swallowing puzzler is coming from Ben Esposito, of Arcane Kids fame, and a new trailer below introduces us to the consequences of this mischief. (more…)

Turn-based tactical squad shooter Frozen Synapse 2 should launch some time in August, developers Mode 7 Games announced today, seven years after the first came out. The sequel is still focused on squad-based tactical action where all units and sides play their turns out simultaneously, but now it’s built into an overarching strategic level of protecting a whole procedurally-generated futurecity and placating its many factions. Mode 7’s Paul Kilduff-Taylor nods to X-Com: Apocalypse as an inspiration in a new half-hour gameplay video, while also showing off the turn-based murders and faction-juggling. Here, watch it below.

This week’s Fortnite Battle Royale is a real double blammy, re-adding the exiled guided missile launcher and launching a new event mode filled with explosives and jetpacks – always a sensible combination. 100 players leaping and rocketing around while launching rockets, piloting missiles, and phlunging grenades makes for some silly fun, from the rounds I’ve played. And I’m not just saying that because long-dormant Quake skills have re-emerged to rocketmurder many more people than I usually bag in a round. But that does help.

Chasm is that dungeon ‘sploring action-adventure game set in a Metroidvanian mining town where all the civvies keep disappearing, dragged into the depths by bad things. You play as a knight who is investigating this unsettling trend, descending into the caverns and catacombs to see what’s up. It first dug itself in on Kickstarter in 2013 but it’s finally finished and has crawled out of its rocky hole, covered in pixels. Come on, clean yourself up, mate.

I love the smell of updates in the morning – especially when they include sweeping changes that improve a game I already like. Patch 1.7 for Battlerite, the fighting man’s MOBA, smells delicious. Round times have been shortened from two minutes to ninety seconds, which means the teal zone of death encloses sooner and encourages everyone to play less passively.

Today also marks the start of competitive season three, bringing with it a new cosmetic item and balance tweaks along with “broader changes to general systems and mechanics in the Arena”.

Valve might want to reconsider their planned ‘anything goes’ approach to content on Steam, after Abstractism – a game that had been apparently lurking around on the store since March 15th – had to be pulled from sale after a flurry of bad press. As reported by YouTuber SidAlpha in the video below, the game was being identified by many virus scanners as dangerous, and was devouring far more CPU & GPU power than intended, hinting at possible cryptocurrency mining. Beyond that, it was definitely generating sketchy Steam Marketplace items, some of which seem likely intended for use in scams.

We all have our defences at least a little bit raised when meeting someone new. In Heaven Will Be Mine, a new visual novel released late last week, those defences are just a little bit more literal, and far larger. I guess it’s easier to flirt confidently when you’ve got energy shields and a giant humanoid metal hull capable of shrugging off meteorites. Set in a bizarre anime-inspired alternate 1980s, it’s the story of three ace mecha pilots on a mission, although there’s every chance they’ll drop it all to get their smooch on.

It is not terror which compels me to write this, though it’s true my world has become little more than a nightmare. Rather it’s that I need to record these facts (or what I believe to be the truth) to prove that some semblance of sanity remains. It may be I have previously attempted to catalogue my experiences, but, if so, the memory eludes me. I can recall the beginning of this accursed journey, though exactly when that was, I cannot say. Or perhaps, it is that on some level I have tried to hide the truth from myself; that to truly know how long I have been on this road would to be further invite in madness.

Fantasy shopkeeping adventure Moonlighter has had a busy couple months since its launch in May. Among other things, the ‘More Stock’ update bulks up environment variety and offers additional rewards for those returning to already-cleared dungeons, expanding further on a formula which John greatly enjoyed.
