Badgerhunt, cutesy emo band from St. Charles, has been making a mark in the St. Louis area. A three piece, comprised of Jack Middeke, Ricky Sampson, and Jesse Bader, the group gathers inspiration from what sounds like to me, Algernon Cadwallader, Cap'n Jazz, and American Football. With all the normal plink-plink, tap-tappy parts in math rock, they bring something different to the table with a melodic approach, mixed with crooning vocals and a consistent, but true to math rock rhythm section. With fresh tunes coming out September 17th, Badgerhunt is a force to be reckoned with.

Their next performance is September 3rd at LNAC and the following show will be September 17th, where they release their upcoming CD.
My opinion of Mr. Jim Fitzpatrick and Knowledge of: Jim has been in the core of glory and captivated his own influences into his core of glory. I have experience in some playing with Jim and touring with him up in Milwaukee back in 2006. Jim Is a solid Song Writer/performer. He holds it down and keeps it up(Pun Intended). All goofy talk aside, Jim is a friend and Jim Is going for the gold. He has many great Records out on Vinyl in his current and past bands. I have seen kids melt over his guitar and grab hold of him in their sweat and angst. I know plenty of Women have as well.. It's not worth it, because you're playing so much that people are going to get tired of seeing your band play so much, and your shows will start to lose value with your fanbase.

2 - Make a flier/poster for your show, or get your hands on one someone else made and put them all over town. Facebook isn't your only resource. The flier doesn't have to be elaborate. Just make a word document with the bands' names, venue's name, price, time and date, and you're set!

3 - Make sure the bands you're booking either fit each other, or there's enough variety there for everyone. Booking a band that does acoustic stuff with a band that does punk or something else loud and racous wouldn't be a good idea. However, if you book an acoustic act, a slightly louder act, an even louder act, and a noisy punk or hardcore band, there's a good transition from soft to loud, or loud to soft, or whatever combination you wish.

Carte De Visite

Pronounced: [Cart Day Viz-EAT]

Carte De Visite is the solo project of Ryan Birkner, a Belleville, Illinois native. Ryan writes and records all the music himself at home with the help of the other members of the live band, Austin Luberda, who plays guitar, bass, and keyboards, and Christian Mundloch, who rips it on the drums. Their songs are short and sweet and to the point, but that point is filled with gorgeous melodies and soft, haunting vocals. Their music holds a likeness to a more parlour jazz style version of Beach House, with a male vocalist.

His music holds likeness to lounge music you'd find onboard a cruise ship on your way to the Greek Isle, mixed with folk music you'd hear in an intimate house show or coffee shop. What gets me about Curtis' music is his melodies, and how he uses them. In some parts of his songs, rather than playing chords to accompany the melodies, he will play the notes he is singing. Starts and stops are also a frequent happening in Curtis' music. He also has a side project I'm not terribly familiar with, but found by accident after a random Youtube search. Curtis played the LNAC last weekend and wowed the audience with his intimate set, which is now uploaded and in the show archive.
What started as a small shack hosting noise shows in Columbia, Missouri, Apop has now blossomed into a record label, venue space, and a house for all things "grating, atonal, noisy, difficult and exuberantly off-kilter," as their website states. Though they specialize in noise, that is not all Apop offers. Genres include but are not limited to noise, power electronics, avant garde, minimalism, drone, industrial, psych, punk, noise rock, metal, and hardcore. At Yalta is a 3 piece math rock band out of Saint Louis consisting of Keith Bowman on drums, Sam Hopwood on bass, and Cole Weiche on guitar. They make music unlike other math rock bands in that they mix all genres into one. IE, their song Plasterhead which incorporates all the starts and stops and finger-tap guitar style of a normal math rock band, but incorporates elements of post rock and even country. They've been together for almost a year and have been playing shows for six months now. Live shows are high energy, loud sounds, and good friends.
They left me trembling with ringing ears, feeling as though I had been slugged in the face. Former This City Is Sinking member AJ joined with two fellow Saint Louisans, Casey and Garrett. They formed the band that is Orion Pax. AJ, the guitarist, plays through two screaming loud Emperor cabs, and Garrett, their bassist plays through an equally loud 4x12 Ampeg stack. Combined with the shatteringly loud drumming by Casey, Orion Pax brings the noise to the DIY scene here in Saint Louis. They hold a likeness to bands such as ISIS, or Pelican.
His timid but powerful croonings layered over samples played through a field recorder layered over modest but unique guitar-work haunt audiences. His lyrics remind me of a country western singer missing his home and family and friends. His second passion makes itself known in his self-recorded, self printed records. They are beautifully designed, thoughtfully folded, and intricately hand screen printed, every last one of them. (They are available through his MySpace). DIY indeed, Jordan makes beautiful music and equally beautiful records.
Performers come from a wealth of destinations covering the globe, including Tokyo, Berlin, Amsterdam, Tel Aviv, Milan, Sweden, Rome, and Beirut. Genres include but are not limited to: free improvisation, electro-acoustic, folk, hardcore, punk, post-punk, rock, math rock, noise, grind, and no-wave. Bands that frequent the Lemp are Fixed Orbit, Family Might, Midwestern monsters Native, Cloudmouth, The Reptilian, Canyons, Jordan Knecht, Orion Pax, and At Yalta, just to name a few. A calendar of events can be found directly at the Center's website. The Lemp is run by a tight-knit group of friends on a board of directors that meet monthly to discuss the future of the Lemp, what should be changed, etc. It is headed by Mark Sarich, the brains behind the whole project, whom I will be (hopefully) interviewing for a later post. His vision is to provide a musical environment for the youth of today to access a more broad horizon on music, and get a less commercial taste of musical exploration. Mark and the rest of the Lemp board members prohibit alcohol, drugs, and reckless behavior. To assure that this creed is upheld, they are very choosy about who they allow to perform, keeping their standards intact. That being said, the importance of this venue to the Midwest, and the USA as a whole, is incredibly significant to the artists who perform there, the people who run the place, and the dedicated people who come to every show.
They make music that, at times, reminds me of early 90's emo. At other times, their tunes remind me of complex math rock bands that throw together poly rhythms and tap guitars to make a wall of noise. At other times, Family Might reminds me of lightning speed 90's pop punk bands. Whatever the case, their music is equally as important as Fixed Orbit. Their demo, entitled "2010" frequents my iPod, and is on several mix CDs I've given to friends. They are indeed one of my favorite Saint Louis bands.
Their lyrics are fervent with angst and anger, desire for more open mindedness, and a desperate cry for today's youth to find more things in life to be profound. "If you think that nothing's profound, this life will take you down." Members include Josh Oberman, Michael Eby, Vince Bono, and Sam Reynolds. These young men are important to the midwestern scene, and the Saint Louis scene alike. Keep making good music, guys.
