Introduction

Mahabaleshwar derives its name from the presiding deity "Mahabali" whose shrine at the old Mahabaleshwar Temple is a major attraction for worshippers and tourists.

About

Nestling in the curvaceous mountain ranges of the western ghats of Maharashtra are the cool misty resorts of Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani. Away from the crowds and noise of the city, these twin resorts are an ideal holiday destination.

Several little known but charming hill resorts nestle shyly in these mountains. They seem to belong to the colonial era when people traveled up to these resorts to escape the heat of the plains. Many of them still retain some of the old world charm and make an ideal holiday destination.

Among the hill resorts of the state, Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani are very popular. Tucked away in the Satara district, they are best approached from Pune. Spared the commercialization that has affected the hill resorts of north and south India, the two resorts offer a clean, calm and thoroughly refreshing alternative. And, perhaps the only place in the country which offers a myriad activities-boating, fishing, horse riding, trekking and playing golf on the gorgeous nine-hole golf course built on the edge of a cliff!

Overlooking the Krishna and Koyna valleys, Mahabaleshwar, at an altitude of 1372 meters opens up a whole world of picturesque delight. With an air of unspoilt beauty, it is a paradise for nature explorers and peace lovers, as also for filmmakers and producers. The summer capital of the erstwhile Bombay Presidency, Mahabaleshwar retains its quintessential charm, despite the increasing crowds that visit the town. Numerous majestic mansions built during the days of the British, still stand as monuments of the Raj.

Mahabaleshwar's 30 exotic viewpoints provide one with a spectacular access to the ultimate in fascinating landscapes Most of the points derive their names from some former British dignitary and are situated in the 10-kilometer radius of the bazaar in Mahabaleshwar. Some points can be reached by motorable roads, whereas other can be reached on foot

Wilson Point is the nearest and the highest point in Mahabaleshwar. It is a vast bare rock with three observation towers erected at different spots. It is a major attraction for tourists as it offers a beautiful view of the sunrise.

Babington point, two kilometers from the bazaar offers a beautiful view of the Koyna valley and Chinaman's waterfall. Helen's point is about a kilometer's ride from here by the Blue Valley Road. It takes one into the midst of the valley and gives an enchanting view of tiny fields and neat little huts.

Bombay point is one of the earliest known points in Mahabaleshwar. Every evening visitors rush to the peak to get a spectacular view of the sunset. From the peak, one can also see Pratapgarh and Makrandgarh at their best.

Connaught peak and Hunter Point are situated off the Old Mahabaleshwar Road. Connaught Peak is the second highest peak of these hills. It offers a panoramic view of the Vena Lake and Krishna Valley. It was first known as Mount Olympia, and was a favorite spot for riders. The Duke of Connaught was so enchanted by its majestic view that he could not resist the temptation of associating his name with the spot. Hence in 1880, Mount Olympia became Connaught Peak.

From here one can see Old Mahabaleshwar and Elphinston Point to the north; Pandavgad and Krishna Valley to the east. Hunter's point approached from Old Mahabaleshwar Road, gives a picturesque view of the Koyna Valley.

On the way to Arthur's Seat one comes across Elphinston, Marjorie and Savitri Points and also Castle Rock. The cliffs at these points rise from the Konkan Valley, which are some 500 meters below the level of the Koyna Valley. The ravine between these points is the rise of Savitri River which rushes down 700 meters straight from here.

Favorite picnic spot, Elphinston Point, named after the Governor of Bombay, Sir Elphinston, was discovered by Dr.Murray in 1830. Arthur's Point, named after Arthur Malet, is Mahabaleshwar's most famous point overlooking the densely forested valley. It is interesting from this point, to watch a straw hat or a handkerchief, tossed down, sailing attractively in the air like a spread-out parachute!

While going to Arthur's Seat, one comes across a small stream called the Tiger Spring. Till this day people believe that tigers and panthers frequent this place to quench their thirst.

Lodwick Point is named after a General who reached this point in 1824. He was the first European to set foot on the Mahabaleshwar hills. A monument at the top of the promontory has been erected in his memory. Beyond Lodwick Point is the extreme end of the mountain range known as Elephant's Head. It is only 12 feet to the Koyna Valley below. From Lodwick's point, the overhanging cliff looks like an elephant's head and trunk, and hence the name.

Kate's point on the Mahabaleshwar-Pune road, gives a commanding view of the Krishna Valley. Near Kate's point is the Echo Point, which, true to its name, echoes the words of the speaker.

On the way to Mahabaleshwar from Pune, Panchgani is a picturesque little town in the shade of groves of casuarinas and silver oak. Protected from harsh winds by a tableland on one side and high cliffs descending into a valley on the other, Panchgani has a pleasant, bracing climate throughout the year. Panchgani is also an ideal base for some good trekking from where one can explore several mule tracks that lead through the now thinning forests.

The hill resort derives its name from the five hills that surround it. At an altitude of 1334 meters it is just 38 meters below Mahabaleshwar. These 38 meters translate themselves into a breathtaking 19 kilometers approach that swoops around bends with carefree abandon, offering attractive views of the river Krishna on one side and the coastal plains on the other.

Panchgani

Panchgani was founded in 1853 by John Chesson who was sent out by the East India Company to find a suitable place where the wives and children of the officers of the Company could reside instead of going back to England frequently. Since then, Panchgani has been an educational center and hill resort.

It has the Raj stamped indelibly all over it. It can be seen in the architecture of the old British buildings, the Parsi houses and the boarding schools that have been around for a century or more.

Flocked by viewpoints, Panchgani is full of wonders, as it overlooks the scenic magnificence of the Krishna Valley, which extends many kilometers from east to west its numerous hamlets, cultivated fields and sparkling rivers.

The view from Tableland, a flat mountain peak measuring about one square kilometer, exposes the mysterious valleys and the miniature looking plains on all sides. The Caves, Kamlagad fort, Municipal Garden and the Children's park add to Panchgani's unending beauty. The walkways, thickly canopied by lush trees and vegetation, offer many delights and unravel many a secret. Visitors can select a horse from one of the numerous stables at the resort and canter along uncharted routes through hidden lover's lanes, to the caves or while away their time at the bazaar. Like Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani is known for strawberries, blackberries, jams and fruit jellies. Also available are the famous Mahabaleshwar shoes, pith flowers, exclusive saris shawls, readymade garments, eye-catching decorative items, leather goods and tribal trinkets.

The Devil's kitchen, situate to the south of Tableland is a place of mythological interest. According to one legend, Pandavas resided here for some time during their exile. Pandavgad caves near Wai are believed to have been built by them and bear their name.

Near the Octroi Naka, lies Sidney Point, a flattened area on the apex of a conical hill. From here one can see Wai and the Sanatorium in the distance and also the sparkling waters of Dhom Dam. Parsi Point and Graves Point are located on the Panchgani Mahableshwar road and offer a view of the Krishna Valley. Six kilometers away are the Rajpuri, caves, located in a temple of Kartik Swami, son of Lord Shiva.

Panchgani has the Moral Rearmament Training Center founded by Mahatma Gandhi's nephew Raj Mohan Gandhi. Its modern structures stand distinctly in the Victoria surroundings. A visit to the Center means a beginning of a new moral awareness. MRA consists of hostels, conference rooms and a multipurpose auditorium.

A visit to Pratapgad Fort, 24 kilometers from Mahabaleshwar, adds a historical dimension to the Mahabaleshwar-Panchgani holiday. Made famous by the Maratha leader Shivaji, the fort built in 1656, saw a decisive encounter between him and Afzal Khan, a general sent by the ruler of Ahmednagar to subdue the rebel. Afzal Khan was killed in the clash and Shivaji established himself as a significant force in the contemporary power politics.

Pratapgad has the honor of being an authentic Maratha fort. From a distance it looks like a round-topped hill, walls of the lower fort forming a kind of bend or crown around the brow. The road leading to the gateway lies through a small, but thick forest.

The famous temple of Goddess Bhavani is on the eastern side of the lower fort. It consists of a hall and a shrine. The shrine, made of black stone, is the image of the goddess and over it is a small spire or shikhar.

An equestrian bronze statue, of Chhatrapati Shivaji was erected in the fort in 1957. The 17-foot statue is placed on a square edifice, which is 10 feet high. And, a little away from the fort, is the dargah of Afzal Khan.

The fort stands a silent testimony to the past that resounded with warlike cries, the clashing of swords, the clanging of shields and the final joyous cries of victory.

As varied as the different parts of the state of Maharashtra, a Mahabaleshwar-Panchgani-Pratapgad Fort experience offers a secluded sanctuary… with all the elements of adventure, scenic sights, and a restful holiday, away from the crowds one finds at other hill resorts. Truly, a holiday with a difference!

BY AIR - Pune is the nearest airport both for Mahabaleshwar (120 km and Panchgani (98 km)

BY RAIL - For Mahabaleshwar, the nearest railhead is Wathar (62 km) but Pune (120 km) is the convenient railhead.

BY ROAD - From Bombay via Pune, Mahabaleshwar is 290 km and via Mahad it is 247 km. We would provide you all India tourist permit vehicles for the local transportations and also for the intercity drives too.

These trees hover on your desktop, lights flickering, in all their animated glory. You could download them singly or in an all-in-one pack that contained no less than 18 different trees at the time I tested it. Kudos go to the developer for the sheer range and variety of the different tree designs (nothing short of astounding!).
Each tree is a single executable that does not need installation and can be dragged around your screen, (optionally) set to be always on top of other windows, and has adjustable transparency setting. Memory consumption for each is about 4/5 megs in memory, which is really very little.

The verdict: generally very well done; the author obviously had a lot of fun making these. Thanks Dmitriy!

South Tamil Nadu tour

Journey - South Andhra Pradesh + South Tamil Nad

Total People - 4

My journey has started with a big twist ! I booked my tickets from redbus.in and sat relaxed. But next day he calls and says that the travels guys have cancelled my Ticket reserved bus and redbus guys were asking do you want an alternative, i screamed at them and told of course.They arranged for alternative with .300 extra, without any questions i took as journey was tomorrow !!

Day - 1
Hyderabad - Tirupathi [ 550 KM ]

We had bus from near our home i.e., RTC X Roads ! We boarded that at 9:30PM and hoped we would reach by 6'O Clock and take Sudershan token and climb the mountain ! To my surprise, it reached Tirupathi at 9:00, my plan was in jeopardy ! As thought Sudershan tokens were over !! Nothing much to do we got refreshed in the Tirupathi Bus station ! Took a bus to Alipiri, but we were told by conductor that it wont stop at Alipiri will go directly to Tirumala, we got down on the road and took an Autorickshaw till Alipiri.

We parceled our Luggage at the spacious building specially met for that !! Started journey to తిరుమల వెంకటేశ్వరస్వామి దేవస్థానము on foot at 11 AM and we reached Tirumala at around 3:00PM, my family got very tired !! We collected our luggage and went to CRO office for the Room !

I showed my MLA recommendation letter to the Officer, he alloted a cottage for us near to the temple, we got refreshed and took some rest. Went for darshan at around 9:00PM with .300 ticket, it was quick we had great darshan of the Lord, returned to cottage, slept for the day !

Day - 2
Tirupathi - Tirumala [6 places] - Srikalahasti [26 KM]

Woke up early and took for Jeep, who can show in and around Tirumala and some other places. I got one jeep he took .2000 for 6 places on Tirumala and Srikalahasti, Kapilatheerdham for four people !

We went around the Temple Town and took some great pics ! After lunch went to darshan of శ్రీకాళహస్తీశ్వర & జ్ఞానప్రసూనాంబ at Srikalahasti extra ordinary place !!

ధూర్జటి శ్రీకాళహస్తీశ్వరుడు మీద శతకం వ్రాశాడు. అందులొ శ్రీ కాళహస్తి స్థలపురాణం స్పృశిస్తూ

While returning to Tirumala, asked about next day's plan ! He told would discuss tomorrow morning ! My plan was to visit around Tirupati, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore [night halt], Kanchi, Chennai drop !

Day - 3

Tirupathi [Govindaraja - Tiruchanoor] - Kaanipakam- Tiruvannamalai - Vellore [200 KM - Single route]

As planned the driver came we fixed a deal for .6000 ! We checked out of the cottage it was a big process ! Left for Tirupathi, had darshan of Sri Govindaraja Swamy & Lakshmi Mata at గోవిందరాజ స్వామి దేవాలయం, and had darshan of పద్మావతి అమ్మవారు at తిరుచానూరు లేదా అలమేలు మంగాపురం !

Went to Kaanipakam for darshan of శ్రీ స్వయంభు వర సిద్ధి వినాయకస్వామి ! It started raining !

Left AP behind and went to Tamil Nadu for having darshan of of Annamalayaar or Arunachaleswarar (Shiva worshipped as a Shiva Lingam) and Unnamulaiyaal (Apitakuchambaal - Parvati) at திருவண்ணாமலை !! I wanted to have darshan of Annamalayaar from long time, I was delighted to be there !

Took some great photography of the temple outsides as it was prohibited to take pics of temple inside.

It was Vrshabhavahana Seva as part of Karthika masam bhrahmotsavams ! Couldnt stay there because it would be heavily crowded by the time deities come and it will be late for us !

We came to Vellore and had darshan of Narayani Amman at Sripuram , temple is spectacular and its full of Gold !!

Stayed night there at the temple guest house located very near to the temple for .1500 !

Day - 4
Vellore - Kanchipuram - Chennai [ 143 KM ]

We had a great sleep woke up at 7:00, we got a surprise that there will be free breakfast ! We went there had Pongal, Idly, Vada :) !

Started for Kanchipuram, weather was awesome and the road was full of beautiful Mountains on either sides !

This is the 3rd time I'm visiting Kanchipuram :) !! Had great darshan of Kamakshi Amman at காஞ்சிபுரம்

And went to Varadaraja Perumal Temple for darshan of PerArullalan or Sri Varadarajan or Devaperumal and Goddess Perundevi Thayaar !

Our tyre got punctured at the temple and guy dropped us at the store near by and I told mom & sis not to venture inside, but they did and got me a bill of .3500 ! I had to pay off and should appreciate the timing of driver , he came and told Sir car is ready ! I gave a blunt smile to him !

We started for Chennai Egmore as we had to board Pandiyan Express at 9PM ! We reached Chennai at 6PM and settled my parents there and I called my dearest friend Koushik, he came to pick me up - we went to Marina Beach to try / teach my new Canon Rebel ! He demonstrated some techniques and took some brilliant pics !

We had dinner at Saravana Bhavan discussed about our latest project which we are going to launch soon !

Went back to station, took food parcels for Parents & Sis ! We sat in train and it started ! To our surprise we all got Upper berths even for my mom - I requested few fellow passengers to adjust they refused my offer ! I had to convince my mom bigtime and settle her on the upper berth ! She liked it : ) - as there was no disturbance !

Day - 5
Madurai [450 KM from Chennai]

Reached Madurai at 7AM and it was very noisy in the early morning - i noticed that Karunanidhi's Son Alagiri's Son Marriage :)! After settling down, I gave a call to my friends contacts cab - which I have booked already by taking a contact of one of my friends' ! He came to the station to pick us !

He took us to some hotels they were full because of marriage ! We got a decent hotel call Hotel President !

We freshed up and immediately went to have darshan of Meenakshi & Sundareswarar at மீனாட்சி அம்மன் கோவில் !

It was spectacular ... beyond words ! I tried to capture as many glimpses as possible with my Camera ! Prasadam was very tasty - it was Polihora / Chakrapongali / Daddhojanam ! We filled our stomach and went to see some more wonders of Great City of Madurai !

We went to Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal its spectacular and built in Indo Saracenic Dravidian Architecture !! Great Fresco's !!

And later went to Koodal Azhagar Koil !!

Returned back to hotel tired !! I was confused now either to visit Rameshwaram or Trichy , took Koushik's advice and confirmed Rameshwaram ! Planned for next day and went to sleep !!

Day - 6
Madurai - Rameshwaram - Dhanushkoti [175KM + 25KM]

Woke early started for இராமேஸ்வர ! It was wonderful journey !! Rameswaram is an island which is connected with Panbam Bridge, there are lots of theerthams [25-26] where we need to take bath ! It was wonderful experience ! After bath we went have darshan of Arulmigu Ramanatha Swamy at Ramanathaswamy Thirukoil ! It was great spiritual delight !

After darshan went to Dhanushkoti its another spectacular place where Bay Of Bengal, Indian Ocean & Arabian Sea combine !! No words to describe that place !! Check below map

Madurai - Rameshwaram

Rameshwaram - Dhanushkoti

Its a Photographers Paradise ! From Dhanushkoti we can see Sri Ram Sethu built by SRI RAMA to get to Sri Lanka ! SL is 20KM from this place !!

We went to Pachamukha Hanuman Temple , where we can still see the floating stones used by SRI RAMA !

I was shocked / surprised to see this !! JAI SRI RAMA !!

We returned to Madurai City ! Next day's plan was to கொடைக்கான !

Day - 7
Madurai - Kodaikanal [117 KM]

We checked out of hotel and took the Cab to Kodaikanal, we took NH-7 ! Journey was through scenic places .. cool breeze, cloud covered mountains, green fields! It was delighting !

Kodai has a ghat road of 60KM from Kodai Gate ! Its full of twists and turns and mind it its double way, need to be very careful ! We were welcomed by a distant waterfall, it was superb ! We were about to reach Kodai, greeted by another cool waterfall !

Cab guy arranged for a Local Guide and Hotel room - it was .1500 per night ! It was decent, weather was spectacular - I've never seen such a nice weather - clouds / mist / sun / rain playing hide and seek ! Now you see an building at 100feet and within 5-10mins mist will cover that place !!

Unique things about Kodai is that there are not Fans / ACs and whenever you go to any hotel they will serve you hot water :) ! Even in hotel rooms, you need to wear your footwear as the ground will be freezing cold !!

Went around Museum, Kodai and some scenic places [Green Valley] ! It was super awesome !

Day -8
Kodaikanal - Madurai [117 KM]

Woke up early I ventured out to see some places and went for Bear falls ! It was nice waterfall - I took bath, it was freezing cold - but i liked it very much ! From there we went to Kurinji Andavar Kovil - Murugan Temple ! And from there went to Coaker's walk and Pillar Rocks !! Went on Horse Ride and Boat ride at Kodaikanal Lake !!

Returned to Madurai ! Took bus for Chennai in the night ! Total Cab bill was . 8000

Day - 9
Madurai - Chennai - Hyderabad [450 KM]

Reached Chennai at 5AM, stayed at my friend's Madhu Kiran's flat for 5hours - Big thanks to him ! And took flight to Hyderabad from Chennai Airport !

I learnt one less, whenever were are travelling especially flights all the people must carry ID proof !!

It was GREAT journey / tour / pilgrimage! Find the photo collage with great background music !

We went to New York from Boston for TWO days . This is the my Journey to see Big Apple !! Its a long cherished dream of mine to visit NY !!!

We [me and two friends[my teammate and a guy from other team]] have booked tickets for New York in the preceeding week. FYI: The earlier you book tickets the better discount you will get. So we got tickets from greyhound.com for $46 per head, we would have got even cheaper but plan wasnt pakka and there is a twist - we got carried away by the website. I even booked tickets for Cruise tour to Liberty Statue online from statuecruises.com, thanks to my friend who has given a this great piece of advice and this has help us immensely. Its always better book tickets online. Back to journey - We started at 0530hrs from hotel to catch our bus which will start from South Station. I was very much excited, as this was city i always longed to see from my college days. I took tube from Kendall / MIT to South Station - check link http://www.mbta.com/schedules_and_maps/subway/lines/?route=RED .

South Station

South Station is huge station - which has different kinds of stations ie., Station of stations :P, its got Commuter Railways [long distance trains], tube & bus station. Its like a big zig zag, you need to follow the directions with discipline else I bet you will be lost ! After travelling more than a kilometer and climbing up / down two staircases and an escalator we reached our bus station. To board the bus we stood in a line unlike in our place with lots of open space in our MGBS, here bus support guy will announce on which gate our bus will come we need to stand there. And entire station is an enclosed one with full AC. The bus driver will come and verify your tickets then gate / its a door will open, i felt the outside weather which was chilly and i was disappointed with the bus, it was Peter Pan ... thats why never get bowled by website pictures !! It was a cross between our city bus and volvo bus [I didnt get any better comparision] :P !

We sat inside comfortably took my camera out and started Zapping pictures, journey is about 225miles down. Beautiful tree foilage to the sides and serene lakes it was pleasent. After an hour around 8:30 bus driver took us to eatery. On highways there will be food exits, they are nearly 3-4 miles away from the highways unlike in India near to roads selling all kinds of stuff and these eateries will have rest rooms in case ;) . So the eatery was Burger king, i took a packet of French Fries and Minute Maid Orange drink - this is my breakfast, i noticed people taking pizzas for breakfast OMG !! That was interesting. To the same outlet another bus came to add salt to the wound, it was super great its Bolt Buses, it pinched me - as one of my friend told me to go for this - Bramhanandam's comedy laughing face splashed in my mind. Any how I digested all these, past is past. We passed many highways cities and seeing outside i saw that we are nearing to NY city ... woo ....... hooo ... , it went through some huge traffic jams but it didnt dampen my spirits. I could see skyscrapers from the window. We reached New York Port Authority Bus Station. We got our bags and then ventured outside it was chilly, my eyes were popping out to see the city, it was more than what I have imagined ! There was Madam Tussads, Ripley's Believe it or Not, some great historical Theatres , great show rooms of luxury products

For your information, we have booked ferry for Statue of Liberty from our Office only it costed us $12 at http://www.statuecruises.com/. This is recommened because it will save hours of standing in Queue. Our timing was 1300hrs, we reached NY at 1100hrs and we wanted to cover some places before we leave to Statue. Luckily we found a Hopin Hopoff tour guy from GrayLine. We took tickets for entire city tour for $54 and hopped into bus, at some places we can see hot air coming from grills on the footpath, after sometime i heard a train horn, immediately realized its NYs underground tube. We toured via important places on open top bus - it was a great experience we went through Fashion District, Macy's , Empire State Building - hurt my neck to have a look at it, UN building, Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park etc - :) ! And we are tensed to rush to catch cruise, that tour guy passed on the City tour map and we realised our boarding places is coming nearer. Its in the Financial District the home of Wallstreet, the place is Battery Park

We were surprised to see huge lines enquired a Cruise guy he pointed us to a point where in we could board the Cruise with our eticket. To board it, we had to go through Airport type of security check, our cruise arrived ! Hopped into it went directly on top of it for that perfect view, it was chilly cold on top but dared to stand, we were taken to the Liberty Island ! The statue is Huge, i took photographs like mad !! We got down the cruise, went directly at the statue http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statue_of_Liberty ! Took photos of her and beautiful NY skyline. We stayed there till 4:30, got some gifts, had Burger as lunch. Its a very beautiful place, we were lucky to have good weather! We skipped one place called Ellies Island as we were getting late. I found many Indian Tourists in that tour, nearly 30-35% were indians in our cruise.

Night stay in NY is very costly its around $400 per night in a decent hotel, so my friend has taken to his sister's place in WoodBridge, New Jersey ! Its a beautiful place, I've first seen an American home, house was like a dream house to me, amazing interiors, floor covered entirely with soft carpet, spectacular view of Nature and house rows ! Entire house made of wood! Beautiful place it is ! We had dinner there. And in the morning they took us to Guruvayurappan Temple near to there home, it was nice temple, they are constructing huge temple near by ! Did some shopping the JCPenny I got a good deal there, nice collection.

We took NJTransit back to NY from Woodbridge NJ ! We missed one friend at the station in Woodbridge NJ as he didnt turnup in correct time and train was on platform, under confusion we boarded our train for NY journey is 40mins.

We got down at Penn Station, walked across the street to do some window shopping, we went directly to Empire State Building http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_State_Building - the most visted place in NY the ticket is around $19 - you can book it at https://tickets.esbnyc.com/ we took ESB Observatory Ticket, you can even try there is a long queue to get into the lift of the building to get to 86th floor. Everything is very organized and systematic they will take a picture of yours and photoshop it Empire State and sell it to you at $22. We were escorted to high speed lift, where the floors were numbered 20, 30, 40, .... 80. Its was amazing how fast it took us to the 86th floor, it just took 3-4minutes. This is the place were King Kong was fighting for his beauty :D

86th floor is observatory, where we can take pics of entire NY skline 360 degrees, its breath taking to see people the size of pixel and motor cars, buses moving in a systematic manner ! Some of the noted builidings are GE, MetLife, Chrysler etc., Wind was blowing very hard and its very chilly out there on top. You will pics of entire city and make sure you check local weather. After spending 2-3hours on top reluctantly got down the building - I felt very sad :( !

We walked down some blocks, did window shopping had some nice coffee. Then we went to Times Square ! Most amazing & happening place on the face of the planet !! Spectacular billboards, Advertisement boards and buzzing with locals and tourist. You will find lots of police cards near by ! It was like a dream to me, the projections of LCD screens on the Times Buildings ! New Year Ball !!! You will find lots of prominent places there Erst & Young, ESPN, CHASE bank, Wallgreens etc., ! Its a great experience, no traffic only people around you taking pictures or sipping coffee.

I wanted to be there for one or two days, as its big city known as Big Apple and lots of things we had to cover. But unfortunately time has come to go to our place Boston ! We went to Port Authority station and boarded our bus ! And met our friend in the bus queue.

While returning to Boston, me and my friend along with some co-passengers got down to grab dinner ie., burger & coke. We had a huge line in front of us. We were little late and driver came running to us and escorted us into the bus, we didnt know why ! Later came to know that bus has left that place thinking all passengers boarded it, but lucky a lady sitting next to us shouted and alterted the driver thats why he came to us running. Thanks to that lady :D !!

My Journey (First Flight) Day - 1

Day - 1

Getting Started

September - 18th : The day has come for which I've waited for long long time. My entire family came to RGIA (Rajiv Gandhi International Airport) to give send off. This was the first time that I've come to Shamshabad Airport. I met my teammate who was travelling with me, I was delighted and felt relieved.

We both went into Airport, it was amazing . It was spacious and very well lit. We checked in our baggage at British Airways all the way to Boston. Got some time to speak to family members, I got emotional at that time spoke to Mom, Dad, Sisters & Bava. Me & my teammate realized that its time to get inside, gave last send offs. I showed my passport and visa, I went inside the Duty free store. And we were directed to the airplane which will take us to London, our boarding pass were checked and sent inside the aircraft.

My First Flight

We were welcomed by a British and Indian air hostess and were directed to our seats, that was the first time I stepped inside the Aircraft, the time was 0645hrs. It was similar to Volvo bus but with an additional row. We got our seats almost at the back and we didn't get window seat :(. And we can hear the typical engine sound, my teammate told that its normal. I was thinking if this is the sound of engine when its parked or neutral what will be the sound if the engine picks up the speed and takes off. While pondering over that thought, i noticed the safety manual saw that this is Boeing 767 - i dont know why, i felt happy like meeting a old friend. All these days seeing some investigation series in National Geographic, i had a decent look at the fuselage, it was huge and aircraft was well maintained. Browsed through the manual and checked for exit doors they were right next to us as we were the last seaters. I saw a decently lit led color Television in front off me, but i didn't give much attention. I check a cover which were given to us, took out the headphone / eye cover / toothpaste / brush / chadder. They are soft and smelling good. I got the aisle seat, i was able to clearly see the wing / ground. It was all set, air hostess announced that last passenger boarded the plane and ready to take off.

First Take Off

My heart started beating little faster - all the voices about aircraft take off / starting ringed in my ears. As per my friends advice i took a gum and started chewing it. As aircraft moved I prayed a little and traveled a kilometer entered the airstrip. As it picked up speed, it shaked a little and within no time we took off and we were over the clouds, it did some maneuvers and it became stable, again air hostess announced the time it will take i.e., 10hrs 40mins and temperature at London. I already started thinking how can i sit for 10hrs 40mins in a single place. In the meantime in house entertainment started, browsed through menu I was impressed as it got lot of good movies. It even had Current flight location menu, it was excellent it will show us where flight is, what altitude, longitude / latitude, Wind speed and distance traveled and remaining. During my travel, I saw Green Zone, Pocahontas, Ishqiya and all few episodes of Simpsons, Friends, Frasier. In between we got breakfast - my friend told we will get these kinda package food there - be prepared , refreshments and lunch - it was excellent, tasty and hot.

In between i went back of plane where we have window to see outside i saw when our flight was over Iran, Black Sea and Caspian sea. I slept an hour. I was awaken by announcement that we are nearing London, I was very very happy. And plane started maneuvering - I saw Thames River, London Eye !

Landing was perfect and we got announcement about the temperature outside. We reached London at 1255hrs Local time. Sky was clear and there was a bus waiting for us, it was low floor Volvo, we were taken to Terminal 5 i heard that it was most busiest Terminal. And the airport was huge, we went into Transit section as we had to catch our flight to Boston, it was at 1625hrs -

Total Journey time - 10:40 + 4:30 = 15:10

BAA Heathrow & Inside

Our waiting area was full of duty free shops and was full of luxury brand showrooms like CHANEL, PRADA, GUCCI, BVLGARI, BURBERRY, HARRODS, KURT GEIGER !! They were awesome !!

I wanted to call home and update, I didn't have Pounds with me, so i went to Travalex ! She asked me for what, i told i want to call home, she told its better if you get at the store next. There they will take Dollars and give your change in Pounds. I took a 75pence newspaper and gave him a $5 bill he returned remaining in Pounds. I took 2 Pounds and called home - that too after long tussle we had to dial 00+91+###. And money just evaporated just spoke 2 sentences :( !

I was feeling bored, so walked around and i was feeling hungry. So i went to another Travlex and converted my Rs.1000 into pounds. And immediately i bought a one Pound priced Cadbury and ate it full :D

And it was 1530, so we went to gate 35 and from there we will be lead our plane. We went down to board another Bus which took us to an underground Train, which landed us at the terminal which got our plane. We took nearly 3 stories of Escalater, it was fun !!

Took off to Boston

And there it stands, beautiful British Airway's Boeing 747 - the scene was awesome. We were already wearing off. Boarded the aircraft fast and sat again at the penultimate seat, we were the only Indians in that aircraft and no window seat :(. It was same entertainment and same menu and same songs / movies, i got disappointed seeing that. Our flight time was 7hrs 10mins. 747 was huge and big capacity, took off perfectly I was sad leaving London - my first international city.

I just put on my flight location details it was updating constantly. We had another Lunch :D on this aircraft also. It was Chicken Tikka masala, i grabbed it immediately and it was very tasty. I tasted some White Wine, it was not so good.

When we heard the announcement that we will be landing in Boston, I was very excited. When it was landing, i saw beautiful rows of houses and boats. It was really picturesque , it touch down seamlessly. It was great - General Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport. Local time was 1835hrs

Total Journey time 10:40 + 4:30 + 7:10 = 22:20 hrs

We had a small problem at Immigration and it was OK. Our teammate came to pick us up in her awesome Ford - it was like best Ford ever. And i sat in the front seat and I saw the most beautiful Boston Skyline ! I skipped a breath !! We drove over maze of roads, she showed us the office and where we will sit !

And we drove into Marriott Residency Inn, it is Spectacular !! I was not able to believe that I was in the United States of America and that too my favorite Boston !!! Wooo hoooo !!

Today I went to Laldarwaja Mahankali Temple (Gowliguda), and Bhagya Lakshmi Temple(Charminar) for having Darshan of Mata and . Please find the pictures below

Beautiful scenery across Musi River, If you come from Afzalgunj you can find this and there are many more and extreme right you can find Salarjung Museum.

Bonalu ( Telugu: బోనాలు ) is a Hindu festival for the Goddess of power, Mahakali or Kali, celebrated in Hyderabad, Secunderabad and also in Telangana. It is celebrated in the month of Ashada masam, in July/August. Special poojas are performed for Yellamma on the first and last day of the festival. The festival is also considered a thanksgiving to the Goddess for fulfillment of vows.

Bonam means Bojanaalu or a meal in Telugu, is an offering to the Goddess. Women bring cooked rice with milk, sugar sometimes onions in a brass or earthen pot, adorned with small neem branches and turmeric, vermilion (kunkum) or Kadi (white chalk) and a lamp on the top. Women place the pots on their heads and take it to Goddess temple, led by drummers and dancing men.

First Bonalu will be started at Golconda Fort Temple then immediate week Secunderabad Ujjaini Mahankali Temple [Laskar Bonalu] then at Laldarwaja Temple [Patnam] and it will spread across Telangana !

Laldarwaja Simhavahini Sri Mahankali Temple . Air was filled with Devotion and there was huge cache of media persons (25) as many leaders would visit the temple to take blessings !!

About : Lal darwaza (Hindi:लाल दरवाज़ा, Red Gate) is one of the old suburbs in Hyderabad, India. It is part of the old city of Hyderabad. Since there is a large red door at the entrance to this suburb, it was named as Lal darwaza during the time of the Nizams. It is only a kilometer away from Charminar.There is a famous Mahankali temple here, which is popular during the festival of Bonalu.

Using Rupee Symbol - Made [very] easy !

I guess I am not the only one who is wondering how to use the Rupee Symbol / Font. Getting it on our keyboards will take some time but we can start using it from today. Here is how:

1. Download the Rupee Font.

2. Paste it in the fonts folder. Go to Control Panel – You will find the fonts folder over there.

3. Open a new Word doc. In fonts, select Rupee Foradian.

4. Use the ` or ~ key. (It is below Esc and above Tab in most keyboards on the top left corner) It will display the Rupee symbol.

This is a parable that succinctly illustrates why socialism fails. It fails because of one fundamental feature of human nature: people respond to incentives. Actually, the most important lesson one learns from a study of economics is just that – incentives matter. Here’s the story.

An economics professor said he had never failed a single student before but had, once, failed an entire class. That class had insisted that socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer. The professor then said ok, we will have an experiment in this class on socialism.
All grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade so no one would fail and no one would receive an A. After the first test the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy.
But, as the second test rolled around, the students who studied only a little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too; so they studied less than what they had. The second test average was a D! No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around the average was an F.
The scores never increased as bickering, blame, name calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else. All failed, to their great surprise, and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great; but when government takes all the reward away; no one will try or want to succeed.

The idea of sharing stuff equally is not a bad idea, actually, if it is confined to a small closely-knit group of people who all care for each other deeply – as in a family. The usual problems associated with interactions among large anonymous groups of people, problems identified as “prisoner’s dilemma”, or “the tragedy of the commons”, don’t usually arise in such small persistent groups. In any case, free-riders in small groups can be easily identified. Also, most people value the welfare of their own family members more than they value the welfare of strangers. That curbs any impulse to free-ride.

Indians need to understand why socialism fails. That is a necessary, although not sufficient, condition for India to get out of poverty.
