Loki "21 Gun Salute" Album Review

The Evolution Of Excelsior
On this, Loki's second album for Siccmade Muzicc, Loki displays a notable evoluttion in both style and delivery. It's a shame that this album was over looked when itwas released (due in no small part to bad and nonexistant marketing, courtesy of the label).

A lot of attention has been drawn to the cover. Many fans lauded the hand-drawn look of the cover, and some said that it dissuaded them from buying the album. However, the album has a folk-art quality about it, in that it does not purport to be a product of artifice. In an era where so mnay rappers were boasting about non-existant riches, Loki stepped away and made a personal epic about his own trials and triumphs. This personal approach to muzicc was no doubt jarring to fans who merely wanted musical theatre.

The production on this album, as well as the lyrical content, is miles ahead of anything on Loki's previous "illegitimati" album. Strings and powerful drums create a backdrop for the drama described in Loki's lyrics, delivered with a more confident and complex style than his previous work.

Loki would go on to collaborate with X-Raided on the "Ignition" album, another triumph of artistic development for Loki.

Perhaps the most concise and focused Siccmade album...period!

Z-Ro "Z-Ro" Album Review

Soulful Thug Music by the Houston veteran
Don't think that Z-Ro is a newcommer to this game, just before you've never heard his music (which is a pity!). Before signing with Houston powerhouse Rap-A-Lot, Z-Ro had been putting work for many years (since 1998) on the underground, releasing many independent albums. It took 6 years for J Prince to sign Z-Ro and once again J Price showed he's got the eye for the best rappers available on the market. Z-Ro is one of the most unique and special rappers to ever spit lyrics on the mic. His music is deep, very personal and candid. Z-Ro is very much down to earth and is not afraid to bear his soul to the listeners (therefore reminding many of the late 2Pac). Not only he raps with his deep voice (reminding a bit of Scarface), but he also sings all the hooks to his songs, and he's actually very good at this! Just listen to the albums biggest hit "I Hate You B_____". Ro's singins there is untouchable and you can feel his pain on this song and throughout the album as well. This album is more than 4 stars actually. I think it deserve about 4.5 start - just because there are a couple of songs that I didn't really feel (they were still all right but not on the same level as the others on the album). One reason for this is that right before the album was finished, Z-Ro had to do some jail time, so many of the last touches on the album were done without his anticapating. However, this IS a classic album, even though it's not perfect. I am sure that Z-Ro's albums in the future will only get better, since Rap-A-Lot has never delivered a weak album (think about it - is there another rap label that never ever fell off and always kept it real? I don't think so). Production on the album is great and different than anything else on the market (just like Rap A Lot always does). It's soulful, with an RnB feel and only a couple of songs got a hard beat ("Z-Ro" and "Crooked Officer"). Producers include the one and only Mike Dean doing the majority of the beats, as well as Mr. Lee, Tone Capone, Solo and Big Tyme. Guest artists are kept to the minimum - only Scarface delivers a full verse, while the other 2 guests (Z-Ro's partner Trae and singer Tanya Herron) only help out on the hooks. "The life of Joseph McVey is a great album, reminscent of the times, when rappers did have a lot to say, other than flossing and talking about clubbin' and fu___ing top notch girls. Z-Ro is a bright spot in this industry and his first big album shows there still a lot more to come (as long as Z-Ro stays out of trouble of course).

Lo "Cee" Album Review

Worth every penny.
For the price of the CD, it's definitely worth buying the full length (as opposed to the single for 'Crazy') because it's packed with great songs. The music is funky and - compared to what's on the radio today - definitely unique and catchy. It doesn't really fall into the hip-hop/rap genre that my iTunes automatically dubbed it.

Slangin'!
"So Cool" and "Slangin'!'" are my favorite tracks. It's good to see local artists getting their music out to the people. Sug'z does a great service for the Mile High City. I happened upon this album by accident and that makes it all the more special. Sug'z was very humble and promised me some great flow with my purchase. He came through immensely. I recommend this album to not only Denverites, but to the entire world population.

I was disappointed when I got this album. A fan of Richie Rich this is his worst album to date if you ask me. Only has one real good song and about 5 ok ones with the rest not worth listening to. From the man who Snoop got his style from he follows what Snoop did - made worse cd's as he got older. Production is handled by: DJ Darryl - 4 songs (not as good as what he usually does, Lou - 3 songs, Stix - 3 songs. Has a few guests on here as well. If you are a HUGE fan of his I'd get this but otherwise pass it by.

Damn what an improvement! It's a long way from (Step Into My World) although he recycled a track "I Got Tha.." It's a big difference the only thing I can say about this is that it really did'nt appeal to the Hynas(ladies)but that's good news for us Vatos right! He attempted to hit the feminine side with the track called "My Everything" but the album remained on block monster status!

Another solid album from Keke da Don
Lil Keke is back once again with a new 14 song album. This is the 8th album of his I have and one of the better ones (2 get 4.5 stars, 2 get 3.5 and the other 4 get 4 stars). After making a name for himself in the souther rap scence in the mid to late 90's he kind of fell off to the underground and finally resurfaced around 04 - 05. Of the 14 songs, 2 are screwed & Chopped (1 the regular version is on the album) and these are the 2 I skip, 3 are ok, and the other 9 are good songs a couple being real good, but no classics. Guests are on 6 songs and for the most part are decent. Production is nice on most tracks but no credits are given as to who did them (like with most of his albums). A nice southern rap album to have where he isn't talkin bout rims and gold teeth like most of the BS southern songs that are ont he radio.

I went to high school with this guy
Precious Reed, when will your episode of "VH1 Where Are They Now" be aired? We went to Thomas Jefferson in Federal Way back in the day. The Seattle suburbs have produced only 2 rappers of note: Sir Mix-A-Lot, and Emperor P (with respects to the Blue Scholars). Mix-A-Lot was better.

In an attempt to cash in on the image of No Limit and Cash Money at the height of their popularity, Precious went and made this record, probably with some buddies in a basement studio with big hopes. Instead, he wound up being the guy who I look up as a joke on Amazon at 12:30am, because I happened to come over his album this afternoon in my house. I believe the story goes that a friend of mine worked at Sam Goody in the SeaTac Mall (the only place that would sell the album), and picked it up out of blind curiosity. What resulted was a few laughs and a $15 coaster.

Thank you Precious, for recording this album.
Thank you also to whoever is trying to sell it. Someone with some free time and few extra bucks ought to pick it up and see where it takes them.

Shotgun! Shotgun!
Blaze's sophomore effort wasn't as mindblowing as 1 Less G, and while some think the typical new age metal/rape fusion found on that album didn't match Blaze's style, I think it works to great effect, but only once. It's fresh to hear Blaze do what he wants, and that's hardcore rap with the expected Psychopathic twist. The opening Bump This Shhh is cool as is, Touch Of Death, but the album really takes off with the classic Shotgun featuring Madrox and ESham. Hey You is the sex song found here and it's pretty good. The album flows pretty nicely, Stick Ya Hands Up and Out Tha Gate are decent cuts as well.But the rest like If I Fall, Roll It Up, 2 Many B*tches, and Time Line etc... there aren't too many memorable songs that stand as individuals, it's more of an album you play casually, not as good as ABK's stuff or 1 Less G, but much better than The Calm or the other pedestrian filler like Soopa Villianz and the Jumpsteady solo albums. Defeintly check it out.

Verdi singing to set the standard for all tenors
Placido Domingo's magnificent voice scarcely needs any introduction or praise or comments, as it is a splendid vehicle that speaks for itself. Not only is the voice - a strong, wood-grained, ringing tenor of a richer and darker sound than a pure lyric tenor - an amazing thing, a gift of God, but Domingo is himself a master of the technical demands of music (in addition to being a master of the technical demands of singing - not the same thing at all!) and a truly great singing artist.

That is, he is never content to sing without becoming the character, without expressing the emotions of the character.

The size, colour and drama of the voice make him an ideal Verdi exponent. Who could ever forget his magnificent performances in "Un ballo", "Don Carlos", "La Traviata", "Il Trovatore", and a host of other Verdi tenor roles? And the consistency of Domingo's vocal quality is something of a phenomenon. This man has had an enviable career - and it's his superb vocal technique that has carried him through it.

I particularly love the way that he varies the outpourings of that golden tone. At one moment it's all fire and blazing intensity, and the next it's a thing of restraint and tenderness. Is there anything at which to cavil in Domingo as a Verdi tenor? I do not think so...

The world has been fortunate to be gifted with such a tenor. If music itself adds meaning to our life and to existence itself, it finds an ideal servant of itself in this man who is certainly one of the finest tenors in the world.

This collection of Verdi arias represents not only the recordings of Domingo in the roles he's tackled during his long career (with some of the finest fellow singers you could imagine), but also some earlier Verdi that he'd not performed, and which he recorded specially for this multi-CD set. The result is a triumph. One can see the difference instantly between various characters - not an easy thing to do.

I would also like to recommend another set - "Der junge Domingo" (The Young Domingo), a 5-CD set released by BMG. I cannot find it here on Amazon, so I can only suggest those who are interested try alternative sources. It's a quite stunning collection - admittedly it contains "Svegliatevi nel cor" which I think is a mistake, but then it was recorded before the Handel revival and was thus less historically informed than one might wish. But really... it doesn't matter. The great beauty and intelligence of Domingo's singing shines through even that, and it's followed by a lovely "Il mio tesoro" from Mozart's Don Giovanni. Things get even better - there's a Donizetti aria from Il Duca d'Alba, the famous tenor aria from La Juive, the "Quando le sere al placido" from Luisa Miller, Lenski's aria from Eugene Onegin, some Gounod (including arias from Faust and Roméo et Juliette), the love duet from Madama Butterfly with Leontyne Price, and much more...

Breed Nation is a San Francisco based artist that grew up running the streets since he was nine years old. Breed is by all means a realist. His music expresses reality, none of that fantasy rap. From age 9-26 Breed spent his life divided between group houses, youth facilities, boys camps as well as a seven year stint in prison. He's the other side of Bling Bling. 33rd Street. 2005.

Big "Chris" Album Review

Excellent CD
This is an excellent recording of popular hymns expertly arranged as big band charts. Chris McDonald did a superb job with the arrangements, ensuring that the entire CD has plenty of variety so as to not sound repetitive. Some of his arrangements are just pure genius - very interesting twists on the old standards. The musicians are all excellent players, the recording quality is great, and the solos are very appropriate for the songs (the improvisation is not particularly "note-y" but rather is melodic, while definitely sounding like it is coming from an accomplished player).Again, I want to emphasize the variety on this CD - you definitely won't hear each song done the same way over and over. McDonald does a great job of passing the melody and background among the four sections of the band.I am in a church big band that plays several of these charts (though not nearly as well), and they are all really great tunes. While it is not ground-breaking music, and serious big-band listeners aren't likely to say "wow", it is definitely an enjoyable CD for even serious jazzers.I have a slightly different version of this CD - it contains ten songs rather than twelve. My CD contains "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Were You There", and I hate to see those not on this CD. This version contains four vocal charts - "He Keeps Me Singing", "Joshua Fit The Battle Of Jericho", "Swing Low Sweet Chariot", and "Let Us Break Bread Together" that are not on my version. I have not heard these vocal charts, but my band has played all four, and they are all great.I also recommend the two Chris McDonald Christmas CDs. I don't see them on amazon.com as I write this, but they are both excellent CDs that are very similar to this.

Gangsta Nutt "Checkmate" Album Review

This album is a must have.
I have never heard a NorthWest album that is this solid, and I've got over 30 of 'em. As soon as you press play on the 1st track, you realize this album isn't the usual pop-sounding, sample-heavy gibbrish. Nothing but funky basslines and smoothe melodies.

G-Nutt can't claim the title of greatest lyricist of all time, but the man's beat selection is impeccable and the tracks actually make sense. Strong choruses, good use of features and SOLID mixing and mastering make this album top quality.

There are 22 tracks on the first disk with no skits. I haven't listened to much of the 2nd disk (aka the "Bonus Disk"), but the album is well worth the money for the 1st disk alone.

The Best Of The "Black Market Bootlegs"
This collective album was put out in 2002 by Black Market Records's greedy owner, Cedric Singleton. Everything made by BMR after Loaded is garbage, meaning its all unofficial or stolen material. This album is compiled of all stolen tracks from other artists' albums, hence the title 'The Appearances: Book I'. All "books" to follow are all bootleg or stolen songs as well. Not to say that the songs aren't excellent and some definite classicx, just to say: DO NOT SUPPORT CEDRICK SINGLETON OR BLACK MARKET! If you've heard "Bleeding House Mystery" off the official Brotha Lynch Hung album 'Lynch By Inch', you know exactly what I'm talking about. Black Market is dead, obviously, or they wouldn't have to steal Brotha Lynch material. Its sad, because Black Market birthed classicx such as X-Raided's Psycho Active and Sicx' Dead 4 Life, not to mention '24 Deep', 'Season of da Sickness' and 'Loaded' by Mr. Lynch.
Before I became a fan of Sickmade, I'd heard a couple Lynch tracks here and there, and liked what I heard. So I decided to buy a Lynch album, and, me being cheap, I bought the cheapest one I could find on Amazon. Thats when 'The Appearances' became a staple in my collection.
The first track to grab me was 'It's Real' featuring Master P and Mr. Serv-on. This track was stolen from Mr. Serv-on's album 'Life Insurance', with whom Master P hooked Lynch up with. Brotha Lynch and Master P go back to the beginning, with P helping Lynch on his debut Ep 24 Deep. 'Life Insurance' was not well received, however, I've heard many people say 'It's Real' is the best song overall from the album. I love the beat, the style is very different from what you'd usually hear Lynch spit to. Lynch's verse is just as hard as any you'd hear on his own albums. Master P and Mr. Serv-on also have dope skills, and they shine on this track.
A constant favorite well-received by all Sickmade fans I know of, is the Delinquents-featured track 'Holloween', stolen from West Coast based group The Delinquents' album. The beat, produced by Lynch, samples the classic Halloween beat. I wasn't feeling the Delinquents, but Lynch definitely banged one out to this. 'Like Jason at Camp Crystal, with a pistol, chainsaw and a machete.'
'3 Da Hard way' features First Degree-protégé Be Gee and Loki. Stolen from one of First Degree's Fahrenheit compilations. Interesting to note, Be Gee is also from South Sacramento but is from the Meadowview Bloods, and you can also catch his freshness on the Sactown Bloods/Sactown Crips album, as well as numerous Fahrenheit releases. The next stolen track, a personal favorite of mine, was stolen from Sicx' album 'If These Walls Could Talk', titled 'Tremendous'. The production was pounding, with Lynch on the beat. This was also the first time I'd heard my current favorite rapper, Lynch's younger brother Sicx. This track was made in promotion of a group they were trying to get cracking at the time, the Swartzaniggas, starring Sicx, Lynch, Tall Cann G, Fig Naytion, among several other 'brothers'. Check this track on Sicx album, which is also full of other bangers.
'Betrayed' also featuring Da Unda Dog, was stolen from a movie soundtrack called 'Unforgiven'. Dope beat and Sicx and Lynch lace up some wickedness and steal the track from Unda Dog(just to be honest).
'Psycho Dream' is as well a sickening track, with the lyrics overtaking the beat. This was stolen from a rapper named Gangsta Profile's album titled 'Fire Redrum'. Interesting also to note, the booklet's credits claim this as a Lynch/Sicx track. Gangsta Profile, while obviously being influenced by Sicx's sound, is NOT Sicx but another underground Sac-Rapper.
All in all, this albums better then having to buy all those other artists albums just for the one feature, but probably equals out to an easily burned CD-R. I'd love to recommend it if it weren't labeled with the Black Market logo.

this is the Original release before Back for the First time
This was the self-released first release for Ludacris. As the previous reviewer said, this includes most of the tracks off of Back for the First Time (just like how there's another version of the Slim Shady LP that came out before Dre signed him)... If you have Back For the First time, this is not really worth owning (unless you've got a collector's mentality, but from what I've heard, there's a large number of these discs in circulation at this point and it's not really worth anything...)

This is the (hard to find) last song from Ludacris' debut album Incognegro. Back For The First Time was actually his second album, with minor changes. The songs It Wasn' Us, Midnight Train and Rock And A Hard Place replaced with Southern Hospitality, Phat Rabbit and a remix of What's Your Fantasy. The 15 second intro from Incognegro was also removed, leaving U Got A Problem as the new intro.

There's more "Bad Side" than "Good Side"
In 1996, Crucial Conflict first made headlines with their catchy single "Hay," and the following album, The Final Tic, somehow successfully managed to merge an Old West/hillbilly style with their Midwest gangsta rap. Although often labeled Bone Thugs-N-Harmony imitators for their rapid-fire deliveries, the quartet of Wildstyle, Never, Coldhard, and Kilo fared well critically and commercially, and returned in 1998 with the forgettable "Good Side, Bad Side." Crucial Conflict has flow for days, and they're talented rappers with great deliveries. Although they're all quite similar, they are fun to listen to. However, this sophomore effort has many problems. The lack of subject matter becomes immediately apparent, as they don't seem to have anything to rap about. The verses are generic, and most could be cut-and-pasted into any of the songs because they're just full of gangsta rap cliches. The songs are formulaic and most sound nearly identical, with similar hooks and production. The beats sound like throwaways from Three 6 Mafia or Do or Die albums, with a stale, electronic g-funk sound that lacks any hint of soulfulness. The whiny synths are neither catchy nor funky. At nearly eighty minutes, the album is about twice as long as it needs to be, and the majority of the tracks could be classified as filler. This immense length makes it such a trying listen that, with the lack of good material, it's very hard to withstand in a single listen. "Good Side, Bad Side" has a few redeeming tracks, but overall it's a boring and uninspired effort that should be skipped by all but the CruCon diehards.

After the intro, the album opens with "The Bidness," an okay but forgettable opener. "Scummy" is the best song on the LP, a spirited and energetic rendition with excellent production, recalling the Old West style they executed so well on their debut. "Roll Somethin" is an average gangsta cut, and the Three 6 Mafia collabo "2 Bogus" sounds too familiar. Although a little lethargic, "Let It Go" is one of the better songs, dealing with rough situations in life. Skip right through "Like This" and "Young Guns," as well as "Universal Love," which is very weak despite a little spiritual influence. "Faceless Ones" is a higlight, an eerie song accurately capturing a scared, paranoid vibe. "Swing It Over Here" and the Do or Die-aided "Airplane" are both okay but nothing to write home about, and the same could be said of the bass-heavy "Pump It Up." "Back Against the Wall" is noteworthy as a Bone diss, but is too long and repetitive. "Come On" and "I'm Bout to Explode," two R&B-influenced tracks, are enough to put me to sleep. R. Kelly carries the very average "Ghetto Queen," which also appeared on his R. double album. Finally, the album closes with "Raw Dope Anthem," which is weak but thankfully the last song.

Crucial Conflict is a solid rap group, but this album is very weak from start to finish. Rather than purchasing this album, I recommend their debut or anything by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Do or Die, or Twista, all fairly similar sounding Midwest acts. Crucial Conflict released one more obscure album and faded away, but I just learned that they have an album called Planet Crucon scheduled for release in early 2008. Here's hoping that they can bounce back and make up for this misstep.

Celly Cel's debut album, Heat 4 Yo Azz is yet another reason why 1994 is one of my favorite years in rap history. Mike Mosely, Sam Bostic, and Studio Ton set Celly up with some sick G-Funk beats that u can only find around this time, many are influenced by the P-Funk music of the 70's like "Funk 4 Life" and "What Am I Supposed To Do." Celly Cel has a sick flow and gives you pure gangsta rhymes throughout. The title track is sick, with the beat sampling the beginning of the One Way classic "Cutie Pie," but instead of becoming fun and relaxing like the original, Mosely and Bostic take it in a sav direction, one of the hardest Sick Wid' It beats with Celly Cel givin you front row seats to gun smoke and robberies. "Hot Sunny Day" is a more laid-back, summer bar-b-q, ridin thru the hood, fun time track with Levitti and Marjuna Mitchell, and "Bailin' Thru My Hood" with B-Legit is a sick rider anthem. Gangsta rap may not have been anything new in 1994, but Celly Cel has an intriguing and entertaining way of givin you the 411 on life in the hood.

Silkk "The Shocker" Album Review

Silkk the Shocker's 1998 sophomore effort "Charge It 2 da Game" is a showcase of No Limit Records in its prime. No Limit became extremely popular during the late 90s and was notorious for producing frequent, overblown albums with great singles and lots of filler. No Limit's cheap, by-the-books gangsta rap really can be incredibly appealing though, and it's easy to see why they had so many platinum selling records. When the formula works, it works very well, and much of "Charge It 2 da Game" is no exception. Silkk is not quite the MC his brothers Master P and C-Murder are, but he's got a unique flow and can display some very good lyricism. Like all the No Limit releases, this album is thick with guest appearances, only four of the songs are not posse cuts featuring the other assorted No Limit soldiers. That, and there's a whole lot of saying "UUUUHHH!" The Beats By the Pound team provides all the production, which overall is pretty average, a lot of the beats sound similar and only a few stand out. The running time of the album and individual songs is bloated. Silkk does perform pretty well and there are some excellent cuts scattered, but overall there's just too much filler to make this a very cohesive album. No Limit fans should pick this up, but I wouldn't consider it a must have.

The first song is the No Limit anthem "I'm a Soldier," where over a simple, hardcore beat, ten of the label's rappers deliver representing verses, including all three Miller brothers, Fiend, Mac, Mia X, Mystikal, and others. This is a very memorable song, showcasing exactly what made No Limit so popular during this heyday. I like the epic-sounding "Give Me the World," which showcases the ridiculous materialism of Silkk and his label, but still lyrically is pretty strong. "Throw Yo Hood Up" is a decent Snoop Dogg collaboration over a standard upbeat Beats By the Pound production. "Just Be Straight With Me" is a highlight, a catchy and fun song. On "If I Don't Gotta," Silkk and Fiend dig deep for some heartfelt lyrics, it's one of the better cuts. I find "We Can Dance" to be a little monotonous and boring. "Mama Always Told Me" is a very average No Limit song, you'll feel like you've heard it before all right. "You Ain't Gotta Lie to Kick It" is more skippable filler material. I really like the gangsta slow jam "Thug `N' Me," this is some No Limit at its finest. I really like the production and the vocals are great. "All Night" is average and forgettable. "Who Can I Trust?" is lyrically and musically one of the better songs. "It Ain't My Fault" is okay, a Mystikal appearance improves it. The catchy and upbeat "What Gangstas Do" has great vibes, it's a highlight for sure. The bouncy "Let Me Hit It" is okay, but "How Many" is an anthem, a hardcore song that despite being generic is very appealing. The last three songs are all solo cuts, the best being the deep and well-produced closer "Me and You."

"Charge It 2 da Game" is now out of print, but keep in mind that this was a #1 album less than ten years ago, so it's still pretty easy to find. I recommend this album to fans of the other No Limit material, there's some fun music here that's quite enjoyable. It's very inconsistent, but "Charge It 2 da Game" definitely has its moments.

Classic No Limit Album that's very rare
This is Classic No Lomit from their Richmond, California days. The title track, Good Girl Gone Bad, is one of No Limit's Top 20 songs of all time. No Limit was at its best when they had that Bay Area sound. This album guest features Conscious Daughters and Suga T (from The Click). It also features Master P's diss on Dru Down and the Luniz with a "I Got Five On It" cover called "I Can't Trust No Man." P and Dru Down had beef over who had rights to call himself "The Ice Cream Man." In Reality, neither one of them had the right, Cheech and Chong own that, but Master P blew up and Dru Down disappeared. That's why Master P started calling himself "The Real Ice Cream Man". Good Girl Gone Bad is a very good album with 11 tracks on a supposed Eight Play (EP). If you can find yourself a copy, jump on it. It's worth the song Good Girl Gone Bad and Big Ed's verse on the song Mission 2 Get Paid. It's probably a 4.5 Star Album and not 5, but still worth getting. I paid 60 bucks for my copy and had no regrets. Mia X later released Unladylike (4.5 stars) and Mama Drama (2 Stars). Let's face it, after Ghetto D everything was downhill for No Limit. Although they sold more albums later on, the quality just wasn't there. It's all about their San Francisco Bay Area albums.

N.W.A. and the Posse
This album contains an amazing collection of notoriously difficult to find tracks! The album also features many underground rap artists with amazing talent, people like Fresh K, and Dr Rock, etc, as well as all the more famous artists Eazy E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and the DoC. the tracks are some what different to what you would find on a conventional rap album, by listening to this album I got the impression that the artists who feature on it are the inspiration for many modern tracks. I have listened to this album several times over, and am not bored with it one bit! It is so different, and it's great to listen to some real rap music, rather than all this commercial new music that doesn't carry any real message, and blatantly done for the money and "fame".

If you are into rap music you should by this album, without question. If you are an NWA fan, or a fan of any older rap music, this album needs to be part of your collection. It's different style and some what experimental tracks are very interesting and are just plain cool.

No one who appreciates music could be disappointed with purchasing this.

MC Eiht "Death Threatz" Album Review

Musically Deep Gangsta Rap
MC Eiht and DJ Quik are probably the most interesting cats out of the mid 90s west coast rap scene. A beat ain't just a beat for either of them...it's art, it's music. It needs complexity, melody. And then, they stack their beats with some of the hardest gangsta themes ever recorded. Four letter words roll of Eiht's tongue like hello and goodbye. And Quik, well, if you don't know about his exploits with the ladies by now, you must be deaf. Interestingly enough, Eiht and Quik had a rivalry going on (Dollaz + Sense, Def Wish IV etc). I don't know much about what was going on streetwise but up in the recording studio, I think it has something to do with the fact that these two rappers understand MUSIC better than anyone else in the game. G-funkwise, Quik's the king of p-funk (talkbox, electric guitars, drums etc), while Eiht rules with 70s r&b/soul (slow laid back tempo, deep bass, melodic violins and instrumental solos).

Death Threatz is just another example of Eiht's distinctive style throughout his long career. This is gangsta rap at its best folks. Featuring 2 real classics, 3 near classics and solid g-funk era rap throughout, Eiht turns out another hit.

The first classic is Late Night Pt 2 and man is this song smooth. A west coast anthem for sure, Eiht recounts a night out gangbanging: "Unloads my strap like a real g should," "Stick the gat behind my back with an extra clip." The lyrics, as I said, are real hard. And yet, when put together with the music, the super funky and smooth bassline, drums and random percussions, it doesn't seem hard at all. This amazing contrast and contradiction is seen in much of gangsta/g-funk era rap but Quik and Eiht push the contrast even further. The "gangsta" is amped up, but not at the expense of the "funk." Both are amped up and brought to a new and confounding level. The second classic and one of my favorite rap songs of all time is "You Can't See Me" featuring Chill. Even smoother than Late Night, the beat is something out of Shaft or Dead Presidents (an homage to 70s soul). Here, the syncopated bass comes together with a fantastic set of strings in the background. The best part about this song, however, is the rolling drums, which bring a bluesy element to the whole thing. The last minute or so is just a classic instrumental solo. I dare anyone to find a more melodic beat in any genre. The sound created is beautiful, and yet, the lyrics, with a full dose of Eiht's trademark "g'yeahs," is hard, boastful, violent and menacing, like most gangsta rap. However, peep out the music video and listen carefully to the lyrics again. It's more complicated than that.

The near-classics are "Def Wish IV" where the tempo is sped up a bit but the funk remains. It's Eiht's comeback to Quik's diss, "Dollaz & Sense." I'll admit that Quik came hard lyrically on his diss but Eiht not only brings the rhymes but has a hard beat behind him. He even got Rob "Funksta" Bacon, Quik's faithful guitarist, to help tear him up with some hard instrumentals! Another gem, musically. "Ain't Nothin 2 It" slows things down a little and "Run 4 Life" which has a similar tempo, is also good.

G-funk era gangsta rap is not all simple. It's not just about the gangsta themes. Musically, Eiht turns out some of the best tracks in rap history...no joke. Haters should open their eyes and minds a little more. Pac, Eiht, Quik and other real gangsta rappers are saying something, both in their lyrics and in their musicality on the boards...Classic 5/5

3.5 stars from Eiht
Eiht's 3rd solo album and last on epic is probably his second worst but it still is a must have for fans. It has it's good songs but also some bad ones, he even said himself it's his least favorite album he's done. It has 9 ok songs, 1 that I skip, 1 classic, 1 great song and trhe rest are good. Production isn't as good as it should be from the people who handled it, DJ Slip & Eiht (6 songs each), Daz Dillinger & Massive (1 song each), and DJ Muggs (4 songs) If only he got the airplay he deserves at least on the east coast (couldn't say for the west -much like Spice 1 or DJ Quik and many other Cali rappers) he'd have at least 10 million solo records sold and a bunch of platinum plaques.

hate mix tapes but I'm a big fan of wc and has been since his low profile dsays in 89 I bought this just to hear his crazy flow and yes dub comes hard hitting letting you know he's still the killer and the guy these girls don't wanna bring around your parents I love how he rapped over nas' track grimy making it even grimier and the trick daddy beat man dub took that track and made it insane. can't wait for his new album guilty by association check out crazty toons mix tape dub does 6 songs on there.

You can skip all these other reviewers cuz they don't know what they're talking about. I own every single Daz CD and this one is my all-time favorite. Sure, you lost the one track with 2pac from the original, smaller version of this CD. Big deal- the 8 new tracks make up for it. This is one of the best gangsta rap CDs that has ever been released, and if you're a Daz fan or even just a rap fan, you have to get this one. Tightest traccs: I Got Love in These Streetz, My System (the remix! way more knoccin than the original), Callin' My Name, Love & Happiness (funny as hell), and Shoot Em Up. This is a classic and I have been listening to every single West Coast/Underground rap CD you can think of for years and years.

I was very impressed with how they had different styles of music on every song. It wasn't all 3rd Coast beats. For southern rappers to rap on any beat from any producer, really shows the talent base of BossHogg...they're not just mixtape affiliates! They're doing the damn thang, and this record shows it.

I have been waiting forever for FM-Blue to release another album. His first album Oakland Styles was sick just like this one. I wish he appeared on more albums because he should be in the mainstream. Good luck to you in the future Blue. Keep working hard and come out with more albums because you will be a star. The only thing I can recommend is to get some of the former Dangerous Crew members to appear on your albums such as Ant Diddley Dog, Father Dom, and Goldy. The would be a great album.

Pick up this one, as well as their previous album, Mystic Styles, which has a more raw sound to it.

Haven't heard much of their newer stuff, but it probably ain't as good as their earlier works.

Mack 10 "The Recipe" Album Review

Mack 10's Recipe For An Average Album (Rating: 5 out of 10- -2.5 stars)
Mack 10's third album "The Recipe" is nothing special for this reviewer. On this album I find Mack 10's gangsta style lyrics to become repetitive and brings nothing new with this album, not to mention a guest appearance on almost every track. A lot of this album has a lot of skip that flows throughout. The first song that stood out was "Money Just A Touch Away" featuring Gerald Levart (R.I.P.), as he rhymes about him comming up in the rap game. Another dope track would be "Ghetto Horror Show" with Ice Cube and Jayo Felony. Mack 10 teams up with Snoop Dogg over an old school beat for the song "Long Beach & Inglewood". Mack 10 teams up with a lot of guests. Many East Coast and Down South, as well as some West Coast rappers who hit (Big Pun, Buckshot Shorty, ODB, MC Eiht), and some who miss (Jermaine Dupri, Foxy Brown, Master P, CJ Mac (sorry I can't stand him)). That can really cause an imbalance on the album and have some filler tracks like "Made ******" and "You Ain't Seen ****". Mack 10 closes the album with him addressing the critics on "The Letter", followed by a rock sounding track "Should I Stay, Or Should I Go" featuring Korn and Ice Cube. I enjoy Mack 10, but personally believe that he lacks charisma of carring an album by himself, and find it better when he is either rhyming in a group (Westside Connection), or being a guest on someone else's album (which might explain the high amount of tracks that feature guests). This album has your average dated topics and common material that might have sounded good back in 1998, but years later is dated. There are a few tracks here and there, but not enough to keep the album togeher. I find that this album is more suited for east coast listeners than it is for west. I understand the unity that was going on back then due to the circumstances of recent events, but this album pulls too far from it's west coast sound that makes the music sound the way it should. Unless you're a hardcore fan of Mack 10, I recommend that you find this album at a used price. Peace.

Mystikal "Unpredictable" Album Review

No Limit Classic
\Anyone trying to tout the former glory of No Limit Records should be happy for CD's like Mystikal's "Unpredictable". This disc is by far one of the greatest No Limit releases, right there along with "Ghetto D",and "Tru 2 Da Game". Tracks like "Born To Be A Soldier" showcase the perfect marriage of No Limit Soldiers over Beats By the Pound tracks. The songs "Man Right Chea" and the title track are vehicles for Mystikal to fully showcase the depths of his rapid fire delivery and gruff vocal tone. Any real Mystikal fan would tell you that Mystikal was close to his best on this CD. Definitely a good idea to pick releases like this up because you can't really get these in stores anymore (tell P to pay his producers you need bread if you produce 10+ albums a year).

This is the solo album that crowned E-40 the king of rap. This is E-40 at his rawest and hungriest and he kills the competition with every tongue twisting rhyme. His backbreaking flow will hypnotize you from the opening track "Drought Season" and will keep you in submission until the final verse of "Rasta Funky Style", I believe, if you have the original version. The Jive version is still good but it misses three classic cuts. the aforementioned Rasta Funky Style, Get em Up, arguably one of the best songs on the original cd, and Tanji Part II. If you are one of the few fortunate individuals to steal own the original copy guard it with your life because you are in possesion of something real special. 5 out of 5 stars for federal. This was the making of the worlds greatest game spitter and the most innovative hip hop star of all time.

Spice1 is hard as ever on "NTA" (no surprise) but this new cat, Bad Boy, deserves to be recognized as a major figah too. His smooth rhyme-style is in nice contrast to Spice 1's gangsta flow. Not that Bad Boy's not hard; it's just a different flow. There's not a bad track on this cd -- but you can pretty much count on perfection when Spice 1 does his thing. Check out "Block is Hot," a track where Spice and Bad Boy tell the truth about cops, our current president and this society in general. Like the best underground gangsta music, this is conscious street music. If you like Spice 1 or any from this genre, you're gonna love "NTA."

A Day In The Life
The other half of Tha Dogg Pound, Daz Dillinger, consistently releases underground albums that the West Coast could be proud of and This Is The Life I Lead is nothing short of that. "Ain't That Somethin" featuring Crystal & P.F.N. is a good example of that West Coast feel banged out. The sleeve shows 12 tracks, but there are actually 13 with "Keep It Gangsta (Remix)". "I Live Every Day Like I Could Die Dat Day" pushes this LP on heights to gain a more mass appeal with his flow and production by himself & Mike Dean. Daz didn't forget his core listeners and the streets where he was raised on "Load Up" featuring the vocals of Tanya Herron on the hook. Highs, bass and everything else on the effort, "Run Tha Streetz", in it's delivery as he blows at Marion Suge Knight. Surprisingly with a heavy metal riff and scratches on "Redrum Galour!" featuring Mean Piece offsets the more mainstream tracks found on here. The life of Daz Dillinger displayed on this album contains "...bitches, money, cars and a gang of weed..."
