Merry Christmas 2013 - 60s Christmas Songs

Back in the 60s' the parents would put on a few albums by the Ray Conniff Singers while we decorated the house for Christmas. There were about a dozen male and female singers with excellent voices and the tunes were catchy with a good amount of reverb in the drum tracks. I fondly remember those good times and just made a playlist of mostly Ray Conniff Singers Christmas songs. I hope you enjoy them!

Lords Of Gravity - Where You Gonna Run

Starting with a nice slow organ chord progression, this kick-ass Garage Rock song lets you know what's coming at 11 seconds into the song when that sweet organ swells and fuzzes out from high volume! Then at 16 seconds, we get organ and guitar belting out one of my favorite Garage Rock 4 chord progressions which immediately causes my brain to light up all circuits and my body to bop and dance in my chair. Its the same pattern used by The Pandoras in one of my favorites, "That's Your Way Out" - if it doesn't get you excited and moving some part of your body, check your pulse cuz you may in fact be dead!

Vocals kick in, asking where ya gonna run to? You gotta pay. It's Judgement Day. "You've been a Bad Girl." Another brilliant Garage Rock theme common in 1966 and dragged into 2012 by this Australian Garage Punk band on the Rumble Skunk Records label. The lead vocal is gritty but understandable. The backing woah woahs are there. The drums are pounding but a bit burried in the fury of the other audio tracks, but they come through at the high end due to the cymbal pounding.

When you hear the scream at 1:23, you know the guitar break is here! All manner of psychedelic hell breaks loose as the guitar screams and wails in a powerful, energetic perfect 60s Garage freeform solo, but floating barely above the still full sound of organ, thumping bass runs and drums.

Back to the organ providing that glorious chord progression again, but this time with the drums right there clearly in the forefront. After another verse and chorus and two yelps and a short organ outro dump you suddenly into silence, leaving you spent but smiling from this fantastic voyage!

Thanks to everyone who has listened to our Garage Rock Radio Podcast 11 over at Mixcloud! It now has 431 listens; Double the number from a month ago. People are still going to Mixcloud to check it out. Garage Rock lives on in 2012!

People like the Garage Pop sound of the first track by William Penn and His Pals. They dig the fuzz of the next two tracks, probably produced by the owner of the lead guitar amp sticking a screwdriver through the speaker to get that intense overdriven fuzz sound without having to buy a fuzzbox!

Garage lives on in the 21st century and people dig the two modern tracks by Lyn Price and The Cons. You can find more music by Lyn on our Record Label website, and read more about The Cons here.

I went crazy with the Psychedelic tracks on this podcast! Six heavy trippy crazy tracks with all kinds of vocal styles and powerful guitar solos. One track is even by The Grateful Dead, recorded BEFORE their first album. I'm going to put another Grateful Dead track on my next podcast!

Like I said last post, I like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Rihanna and Adele as much as the next person - but sometimes you gotta try something new and COMPLETELY Different! It's going to be cool to watch Madonna doing the half time show at the Super Bowl this weekend, I'm a Madonna fan too. But I also love obscure 60s Garage Rock, Runk, Indie and Psychedelic music, so I make these really cool podcasts to feature that kind of music.

It's been just one week since the latest Garage Rock Radio podcast, number 11, hit the interwebs. We're happy to report that listens on Mixcloud are going well! Almost 200 listens so far and a lot of new "followers".

I'm listening to the podcast right now! I think this one is a good mix of 60s Garage Rock in all its lo-fi glory, new high quality Garage / Indie Rock tunes, and fuzzy Gothic Psychedelic 60s tunes with some extended guitar solos. Included in the Psychedelic portion of the show is a very early recording by The Grateful Dead, right after they changed from The Warlocks! That is followed by a trippy dirge with spacey guitar during the verses followed by piercing fuzz riffs during the TWO extended guitar breaks! Lyrics to "Song of a Sinner" which the vocalist is singing to God:

Great Original Garage Tock Band from the 60s!

The Morning Dew was a very successful rock band from Topeka, Kansas during the 1966 to 1971. The band toured through-out the Mid-West and was one of the hottest psychedelic bands of the era.

Have a listen to a GREAT Garage Rock song, "No More" by The Morning Dew, recorded in April 1967. Gotta love the Scream and the awesome fuzz guitar solo at 1:22

Dublin natives Cheap Freaks have been making a stir since they started just over a year ago. Churning out a blissful blend a fuzzed up garage rock with some heavy psych. In their short while together they’ve opened for acts like the Buzzcocks, Black Angels and Jay Reatard and a in recent times a successful tour of Germany has opened many doors in Europe for the band. Fronted by both former Things bassist Robbie Brady and former DC Pakt guitarist Al Dodd their debut 'Play Four Songs' 7" EP was released last year and is available to buy from US label Big Neck Records www.bigneckrecords.com. Their follow up EP 'Teenage Brains' will be released on the bands own Psycho Sound Records and will be available this month on CD and itunes download. FIRST ANNUAL POWER POP-A-LICIOUS! MUSIC FEST

The first Power Pop-A-Licious music festival will take place on Saturday April 30th & Sunday May 1st at the legendary rock club Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park, NJ. Conceived and curated by power pop legend Paul Collins (cofounder of THE NERVES, THE BREAKAWAYS and THE BEAT) the fest will bring together some of the finest young guitar-driven power pop, garage rock and punk-pop bands from across the U.S. and Canada. Power Pop-A-Licious is a unifying rally cry for this thriving rock-n-roll subculture, and is a means for power pop fans of all ages to discover a wealth of talented new music acts in one power-packed weekend.
Collins explains the concept behind the festival, "I was touring all over the country with my Beat Army Tours, when it hit me, I gotta bring all these great bands I'm playing with together for one crazy weekend!"

This all-ages event is ground zero for a burgeoning DIY power pop scene that's been fueled by the immediacy of the Internet, the devotion of its fans, and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. Each day will feature bands from different regions of the country, with local DJs spinning sets to create an all-day dance party atmosphere. Similar in approach to “happenings” in 1960's London, Power Pop-A-Licious is no mere rock n’ roll concert, it’s an event. DJs, performance artist’s video projections, and, of course, the spirited, high-energy live rock-n-roll performances from all these great new bands will provide the entertainment. The world-famous Asbury Lanes, where the two day fest will take place, is a vintage bowling alley, bar and live music venue with a capacity of 300, and is located in the heart of beautiful Asbury Park.

Garage Rockers! Here's a video I just found on YouTube. This song is our kind of music!!! They use Vox equipment and 60s harmonies to create this groovy tune and excellent video. If you like The Dandy Warhols, Brian Jonestown Massacre and similar indie bands then you will love this band and this particular song!

I don't know anything about the group and a quick Google search found nothing except they may be from San Francisco. This song came out in 2007 so who knows if they are even around. All we have is this video and this page on OurStage:

Song 1 was originally done by The Vogues in the 60s. Lyndsey's cover is an upbeat rocking version of this cool tune! Beg Borrow and Steal

In 1965, a bunch of kids from Ohio were in a band that released the amazing Garage Rock classic, Beg Borrow and Steal, under the name of The Rare Breed and Ohio Express.

In 2008, two of these kids released a YouTube video on their BegBorrowAndSteal channel of them performing their song.

Here are three videos of this awesome tune. The first is a video of what sounds like the 45 single, most likely in mono. The seond is someone playing the Stereo Album version, with a cool locomotive intro. The third is of the original "kids" who recorded it, from 2008.

You can download an MP3 of the song from our site. It was recorded from the Mod Monday 60s Radio Show on WNYU in NY in 1983 on a portable radio with a built-in cassette recorder. You can hear the DJ's voiceover at the end:

These are two of the original band who recorded Beg Borrow and Steal. It was released under names Rare Breed and Ohio Express. This is NOT a cover. People who recorded this record were: John Freno, Barry Stolnick, Alexander "Botts" Norbit, Joel Feigenbaum and Tony Cambria. The record did not sell when released under the "Attack" label, but sold about a half a million copies under "Cameo Parkway". THE MINUTES
After a year long residency in 09' at Dublin live music staple Whelans, The Minutes developed a unique rock n' roll show to call their own.
After becoming one of Dublin 's must see live acts, it came time to record their debut album and in October of 2009 the three piece headed to Marcata Recordings in upstate New York . Together with producer Kevin McMahon the band have crafted a ten track album that captures the energy of their live sets. THE VAGABONDS
The Vagabonds are a Dublin based 4-piece punk-rock band. However, they transcend the mediocrity of the indulgent, egotistical and nepotistic ways, some of their better known peers are renowned for. They drive through the political and social landscape of their songs with little care for who may take offence along the way, if this band offend you; you don't understand. The Vagabonds have no time for bigots, racists and homophobes, if you are any of these things you should not listen to this band. Connected Magazine has called "a refreshing blend of tuneful punk melodies with grimy garage riffs to create a totally infectious sound" and renowned Limerick DJ, Alan Jaques, has refered to them as "Bob Dylan fronting The Clash". The band go into the studio in early June to record their debut single with Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur, Babyshambles) with a release pencilled in for September.

Girls Names
Formed in January 2009 with their first gig booked before even playing together, Belfast 's Girls Names unabashedly hark back to the early/mid eighties shadow world of Beat Happening, Black Tambourine, Felt, C86 and the Sound of Young Scotland. In their short existence they have quickly honed their craft in creating their own self-styled “disposable noise pop”, masking subdued bittersweet vocals and melodic hooks with reverb drenched guitars and Mary Chain primal drums. Having sold out of their debut home taped demos on Cass/Flick (Belfast) last summer and after a string of support slots with the likes of Sic Alps, Wavves, Times New Viking, Lovvers and Gary War, Girls Names are set for their first release 'proper', with a 12" EP on Brooklyn’s much talked about Captured Tracks label and a full UK tour with label buddies, La La Vasquez in the spring. Expect more releases in the upcoming months through Cass/Flick and Tough Love Records ( London ) and a debut album in the offing before the year is out.

ROMANOVS GOODBYE
Exhuming the dead lineage of music's royal past, whilst bringing it round with an electroslap to the future, Romanovs Goodbye are a project designed to break with and shake with their own backgarden diet of post-punk, rave, grunge, electro and alternative rockulation. BATS
Formed in 2006 by complex molecules, BATS have been dispersing their audio seed throughout Ireland and the rest of Europe with fervent vigour.
