If you, like me, don’t have the space or the money for a super posh barbeque you’ll probably be doing your barbeques on those disposable barbeque trays.

At it’s happiest in a sunny, sheltered well drained soil, Lavender  will also grow well in very dry conditions with poor soil, making it ideal for that spot in your garden where nothing else will grow.

What Is The Best Way To Grow Lavender?

Lavender can be bought in seed form but can be rather a pain to get going so my advice would be to buy yourself a lavender plant to give yourself a headstart.

Once you have that in your possession then you need to choose the right spot. The only one thing you really need to consider here is drainage, with any waterlogged spot being a big no no.  As I mentioned earlier, your lavender will survive in more poorly draining soil, but would benefit from attempts to improve drainage such as adding manure, compost or gravel.

When Should You Plant Lavender?

The ideal time for planting lavender is in the months April, May or June depending on what stage you buy the plant (i.e as a lavender plug plant or proper plant),  and once in pruning it back will ensure they grow to be nice and bushy. Space well apart to allow the air to circulate round them well and give them a good water till they’re established and you will soon have a garden full of  wonderful smelling lavender.

If you want to grow your lavender in pots then you need to make sure they’re deep ones as the roots of the lavender are very long. Also make sure you use a soil based compost to make the earth as natural an environment for the lavender as possible and water well in the Summer when lavender plants are most prone to drying out.

Most people think all lavender is the same but there are actually a whole range of different varieties, with five of the most popular being:

1. Lavender Munstead - If you’re planning to grow lavender in pots then the dwarf Lavender Munstead is a great choice with its blue colour and wil also offer great ground cover and low screening if planted directly into the bed.

2. English Lavender Hidcote -The Hidcote variety is one of the most well known varieties of lavender and has the fragrance we all know and love so well, and like the Munstead will fare happily in both pots and straight in the garden.

3.  Lavender Melissa -  With it’s large lilac flowers and long slender silver green stems this Lavender Melissa plant  is one of the most impressive varieties of lavender and great for attracting both bees and insects to your garden.
