Growing your own vegetables is really not that difficult for even the most novice gardener, but the rewards are many. First and foremost is the taste issue. Supermarket vegetables are typically shipped in from hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of miles away, and by the time they’re put into your shopping cart they are anything but “fresh.” The difference in the taste of a homegrown, vine-ripened tomato from your own garden and the bland, mealy supermarket tomato is astounding.

Growing your own vegetables also saves a considerable amount of money, and offers the convenience of having what you need for your supper, right in your own backyard. Learning how to grow vegetables also means you can eat organic produce that is far healthier for your body than the pesticide-laden supermarket vegetables.

Here is a simple six-step plan for learning how to grow vegetables.

Step One: Choose a good site

Some things to consider are the amount of sun (most vegetables need a full day), wind exposure, ground slope, and location (the nearer the garden is to your home, the more convenient it’ll be to tend). You’ll also want to note where the water spigot is located; closer is better. Beginners should start with a small plot that is manageable.

Step Two: Prepare the soil

The first thing you need to understand when learning how to plant a vegetable garden, is that without nutrient-rich, well draining soil, everything else you do won’t matter much. So it’s important to learn your soil type, and amend it by digging in high-quality compost, minerals (if needed) and organic fertilizer.

Step Three: Buy seeds and/or transplants

When selecting seeds or plants, first decide what you like to eat most. Next, consider the space required for these plants. Finally, take into consideration the ease of growing. Novices will have a more enjoyable experience selecting vegetables that are less finicky, such as squash, lettuce, tomatoes and radishes; melons can be challenging even for experienced gardeners.

Step Three: Plan what goes where

Group plants by similar harvest dates and plant size. A popular space-saving technique is to interplant quick growers like radishes among slower ones like carrots. The radishes will be ready to harvest by the time the carrots get going. Save room in your vegetable patch to make successive plantings of crops that have a short “peak” period, so you can enjoy them over a longer period of time.

Step Four: Plant your seeds and starts

Sow seeds evenly in rows according the package directions, or set out the transplants at the recommended intervals. Select only the best transplants that are strong, stocky, and disease-free.

Step Five: Water well and wait

Vegetables prefer less frequent, heavy irrigation to light sprinklings. Irrigate well to get good growth, and to avoid the soil drying out between watering. When feasible, avoid overhead watering which encourages fungal diseases. If you must use overhead watering, try to do it in the mornings so the plants have a chance to dry out before night-time.

The hard part of planting your vegetable garden is over, and now the fun is just beginning. It’s so rewarding to watch the seeds sprouts and see tiny seedlings grow into big plants laden with tomatoes, peppers, beans and more. Soon enough, you will be bringing in your bountiful harvest to have for supper!

Each spring as daffodils start to bloom and buds start to open I get the urge to put my hands in dirt. There is something theraputic about dirty fingernails and hard work. As far back as I can recall we always had a garden. My grandpa gardened, my mother gardened. It was inevitable that I would garden too.

As a young wife & mom I was lucky enough to live next door to my mother & grandpa. The close proximity gave me many opportunities to learn to garden, can our harvest and learn the joy of working together with others.

One of the first lessons grandpa taught about gardening was the importance of timing. You didn’t want to plant too soon or your seeds would rot in the ground or freeze. Grandpa watched the weather and knew the signs of when it was time to plant.

When the snow was off Silver Star we knew that the earth was warm enough to till. Grandpa would pull out his tiller from the barn and oil it up. Sometimes that tiller needed some coaxing and grandpa gave it more than a few harsh words when it didn’t cooperate. If the rototiller and the weather cooperated you could bet that he was out turning the soil in preparation to plant.

In early spring he’d spray his fruit trees, trim berry vines, tie up the grapes and a multitude of other outdoor tasks. If he saw me outside, he would stroll down the path that connected our gardens. He’d inspect my trees, give advise, ask about the type of tomatoes I planted and reminise about the many gardens in his past.

During those garden walks with grandpa he told stories of his father and other family members I never met. Because of his stories I came to know them. He told me about his father being an itinerate farmer in New York. He shared stories of cutting ice from the lake to put in the cellar to preserve food. I came to know his grandfather who while in his 90’s would sit on the front porch and snap beans because that is all he could do. His stories also fueled my love of family history.

As he got older it became increasingly hard for grandpa to do the gardening he’d once done, so he taught my son to till. I can still remember them walking side by side in the furrows they made with the tiller. My son holding onto the oversized beast and Grandpa walking and guiding as needed. Grandpa has been gone for many years but the lessons he taught and his love of gardening live on in his family.

As I write this at my window, I know that spring isn’t far off. The sun feels a bit warmer than it did a few short weeks ago. Daffodills & tulips are poking out of the soil. I have primroses blooming in my yard and buds are set and ready to burst. It won’t be long and I will take a walk through my garden. I’ll check the trees and trim the berries and tie up the grapes. AS I walk through my garden and check for things that need doing, I won’t be alone. Grandpa will be there too as I recall our walks from springs past.

Some areas are blessed with warm temperatures in the early part of the year, while others have snow on the ground until April or May. It is important to understand that when we speak of early spring, we are talking about a season rather than a date. This is especially true of getting the garden prepared in the early spring.

It can be difficult if not impossible to do any garden preparation if there is deep snow or ice on the ground. However, when the ground starts thawing out, it is time to start thinking of preparation. The earlier you prepare the garden plot, the sooner you can reasonably expect to start planting those vegetables that are cold hardy. Early preparation also results in a better garden without needing to put in a huge amount of effort all at once. In fact, you can save a bunch of effort.

There are a couple methods of ground preparation used for the garden in the early spring, which will usually yield good results. The first is the simplest, though alone, it leaves a little bit to be desired. It is to cover the plot with black plastic and to weight it down. This helps by both burning and smothering any weed seeds or developing weeds that have made their way into the garden. The black plastic can be pulled up later, when the temperatures rise, and prior to tilling or turning over the soil.

The down side is that while this can help kill the weed seeds, it does little to really improve the soil.

The second method can be used in conjunction to the first, after the black plastic has been removed, or it can be used alone. This is to put down a few inches of compost in a layer over the garden. If you have no compost, a thin layer of straw can be used. Straw can also be used with the compost. Even leaves or hay can be used.

Allow this to lie on the ground until you are ready to work the soil, and then till or turn it into the dirt. This increases the fertility of the garden soil, which in turn gives extra nutrients to anything you plant. At the same time, it improves the quality of the soil in regard to making sure it is porous.

The fact is that many people put straw, hay, or compost over their gardens late in the fall, in part so it can be tilled into the soil in the spring. The more you do for your vegetable garden, the more it will produce for you.

This can be a time and labor saver later on, when you don’t have to add fertilizer or spend a lot of time removing new weeds before you can even plant the garden.

Gardening can be a lengthy, backbreaking job. It really doesn’t need to be, though. One way to make it much easier is to start preparing the garden in the early spring. Once you see how great the results are and how great your vegetable garden grows, there’s a good chance you will be doing this every year, in the early spring.
