Once and a while a new vegetable or fruit becomes very popular, such was the case with the hybrid strain of the grape tomato. The original tomato plants produced a plum sized tomato and the only way to make the larger and rounder sizes we are used to today was to cross breed them, making them a hybrid.

Tomatoes were also cross bred to make them smaller, such as the cherry tomato and then even smaller to make the popular grape size tomato. Cherry tomatoes when cut or bit into tended to spray water out of them; they also had thin skins making them a little difficult to work with. The demand for a smaller, meatier and sweeter tomato was what led to the development of the grape tomato.

The grape tomato did meet this demand because it was smaller, had less water in it and was much sweeter. It also had a thicker skin like a Roma tomato. It became so popular it was being used as a snack type food almost like peanuts. One of the first strains to make it to the United States was a strain from Taiwan and this variety was called the Santa F1. Hybrids can only be grown from seed and the seed from the tomato itself will not yield the same plant. It requires the original seed to produce the same tomato plant, creating a high demand for the seed.

A tomatoes origin is an important part of how its classified. Tomatoes whose seeds have been openly pollinated and passed down from one generation to the next and have been in circulation at least 50 years would be classified a an heirloom tomato or heritage tomato. It is possible for hybrid tomatoes to qualify as heirlooms, but they must be a hybrid of two known heirloom strains and then be openly pollinated for up to 8 years or more to remove the hybridization from the resulting strain.

The grape tomatoes grow in clusters similar to grapes and should be picked as a cluster. However if you pick them when they are green they will not ripen on their own, they need to ripen on the vine. They grow much the same as other tomatoes needing full sun and a rich soil. They should be planted 21/2- 3 feet apart. When watering it is best to deep water them to get down to the roots instead lightly watering everyday. Keeping the water off the leaves will also help prevent fungus from starting. Fertilizers rich in phosphorus and potassium should be used and applied every 2 weeks.

As they mature they will become quite top heavy and will need to be supported with some sort of support such as a cage. They mature in about 70 days and will not produce fruit when the temperatures are above 95 degrees or below 55 degrees. Blights and fungus can develop when there is high humidity. Grape tomatoes can grown in your garden and also do well in containers.

1. To increase your garden results, choose locally approved varieties of tomatoes that contain VFN on the package. This variety helps to protect your vines from major plant diseases and nematodes.

2. Plant your tomatoes in the sunlight and avoid fully or partially shaded areas. Outdoor lighting is the best, however, indoor plants do well will special horticultural lighting systems installed over head, directly striking the plants.

3. Use stakes or caging to keep your tomatoes off the ground. In addition, tomatoes planted in windy climates may need to have a windbreak shield to guard them from high speed gusts. If you are using a cage, attach the windbreak to keep the container in an upright postion.

5. Add fertilizer or compost to keep your soil moist for maximum water intake to the plant. However, if you have just transplanted your tomatoes, give them two weeks to settle in before adding a mulch.

6. Estimate your garden space and choose between the determinate and indeterminate tomato vines. The former grows to a fixed length and works well with smaller spaces, and the latter will continue to spread beyond the boundaries you have set for your garden.

7. When planting seedlings, be sure to leave ample room for the tomatoes to grow. Cramped quarters will cause some of the vines to choke and block the mandatory sunlight for others to thrive.

8. Prune the under lying leaves away, especially the discolored ones that are showing signs of disease. Infections will spread quickly and can destroy the bulk of your harvest. In addition, to protect the healthy vine, its best to use clippers rather than plucking the dead leaves.

9. When transplanting a tomato, be sure to submerge the plant three quarters into the ground. The depth will allow the plant to adapt quickly to its new environment and sprout its new roots.

10. Plant your tomatoes after the last cold snap of the year. Frost can do great damage to any young plant, and the tomatoes are highly susceptible. If your tomatoes were planted in the spring, you should be able to harvest from the same vines for the entire season.

I dream of onions! A day without onions is like a day without sunshine. I may have messed up on the metaphor, but a great portion of our daily intake of food has some form of this tasty bulb or stalk hidden within its lists of ingredients; especially Mexican food.

In the south the last gasps of winter are blowing a few snow flakes around the garden. As soon as the ground is dry enough, it is time to put onion sets into the ground. They will begin to grow in cold weather and mature as the days get warmer.

Economically it is cheaper for most of us in a small family to simply go to the market and buy the vegetables we need, but it is not nearly as much fun as growing them yourself and the food is usually tastier and healthier for you.

Like good wines, onions are categorized by colors; red, white and yellow, with hybrids of each category available through seed catalogs and seed stores. I buy the plants, or sets, at local seed stores that specialize in obtaining the correct specimen for your location.

I live in the south where our temperatures are fairly warm all year round, compared to most of the north. "Short Day " varieties of onions work for our section of the country because the sets will start making bulbs earlier in the year when there are 10-12 hours of sunlight.

"Long Day " onions are the choice of northerners because they have 14-16 hours of sun in the summer and they will have longer to produce taller plants and larger bulbs.

If you planted a "Short Day" onion in the north, it wouldn't do nearly as well as putting it into a bed in the south. The same applies to the "Long Day" vegetable living in the south. My growing area is sort of between these two, so I live in an intermediate growth area. There are onions for that climate also.

After picking the onion sets you would like to grow, find a well drained spot in your garden. As soon as you can break a plot of workable soil, dig a trench about three to four inches deep.

Pour about one-half cup per ten feet of 10-10-10 fertilizer in the trench and cover it with two to three inches of soil. Next, plant the onion sets on top of that layer of soil, about four inches apart and cover them with an another inch of soil.

Onions do not require a lot of work, but they do need more fertilizer as the bulbs begin to grow. It takes a lot of nourishment to make big bulbs. Side dress them with either more of the fertilizer you used in the beginning or dried manure. They will love you for that small act of kindness.

When the green shoots, or leaves, are about five to six inches tall, pull every other onion from the bed. Use them for salads, soups or just eat the tender white onion raw. Harvesting onions in this manner will enable the onion bulbs on the remaining plants to grow large and round.

Chives are onions too. Plant a few in your flower garden or herb garden and they will come back for years to grace the tops of baked potatoes. Water them occasionally and you will be blessed with this delicacy for years.

Onions are not only good for you, but in ancient days they were thought to have mystical powers and were able to keep vampires and other scary characters at bay. Over the years, to the consternation of us onion lovers worldwide, Hollywood has evidently learned that garlic has more box office power than the onion. The majestic onion has been relegated to second place in evil character removal.

Gentle reader, worm composting is fun! I've been doing it for years and I love it. I tried the bin composting, but was never really able to get it working right. The weather was either too hot or too cold, or my mix wasn't wet enough, or wasn't getting enough oxygen - it seemed like there was always some problem or another that I had to deal with.

Then I got into vermiculture - worm composting and it was so much more successful! I built my box, got my basics together, ordered my worms and in a week, I was in business! I was able to use up my kitchen scraps, lawn clippings, some small prunings, and the occassional newspaper and it all worked great.

The best part is that even in a harsh zone 9 winter, the worms seem to thrive and even in 110 degree heat, they keep on munching away at the stuff that I never could get to compost properly.

I also now have a free source of natural fish bait, and since I live near a reservoir, I use worms as bait all the time, though I'm still not a very good fisher person, and have yet to catch my limit - but I don't blame the worms for that You can also give them or sell them to your other fishing buddies and be the hit of the trip - maybe they'll even bring the beer this time.

Another great benefit is the worm castings because all my vegetables love them, especially my beans and tomatoes. The beanstalks grow tall and strong and my heirloom tomatoes are flavorful and juicy.

3 or 4 times a year i'll take out a bunch of worms and put them where I think they'll do the most good in my garden - in the vegetables, or around some flowers that I really like. So now my garden is green and lush and has lots of worms.

Truly a worm farm is much easier than composting, it actually works, and I am able to enjoy the numerous benefits year round. You should try it too!
