Night in Belgium

Bruge (Brugge in Flemish) was a killer. A 2 hour show. The Belgian fans are some of the finest on the planet. We had a great time on and off the stage. This show was the best of the 3 I've done in Brugge the last 5 or 6 years, and if you haven't visited this lovely town make sure you do. Belgium is the first country that played Matador and it went on to be # 1...and now they're playing Coney Island Winter. Playing Coney last night for the first time with the band was the greatest. The song is so much fun to play. We rocked the Grote Markt from the its cobblestones to its steeples! We kicked it off with a Rockin' Coney and ended with a 15 minute version of Matador, always a great closer. Our Belgian band is Mirko Banovic (bass), Philipe Bruffaerts (guitar), Maxime Lenssens (drums), Rudi Genbrugge (keys).

While I am not religious, I bow my head in prayer on this special day. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s work, his love for others, his concerns, his remarkable courage, his faith, his belief in mankind regardless of race, color, creed, or economic bounty (or lack of) are inspiration for us all to follow. How lucky we are to have had such an example!

Dr. King I wish I could have met you. I wish I could have been one of the soldiers in your Army. I remember that day, but I really didn't know what it meant. I kept it at bay away from my feelings and consciousness. I was afraid of it and as I wrote in my song, "I was afraid of Malcolm just like any white man".

In time with the deaths of JFK, Malcolm and RFK, I let the scary truth come in. Dr. King I thank you for the floor you laid under us all, and the ceiling you removed forever. We can't go back. Thank you Dr. King.

We were separated as infants and haven't seen each other since, save for a single brief meeting almost fifty years ago. We are both excited and moved beyond words that this is finally going to happen. This is truly the ultimate gift, better than anything Santa ever brought me!

Another great song about New York is Garland Jeffreys' "New York Skyline", from his brilliant 1977 album, Ghostwriter. Jeffreys was a college friend of the pre-Velvets Lou Reed at Syracuse, and they've remained friends - Reed still makes guest appearances at his shows - as recently as last Tuesday, in fact. Man, would I love to see that. The one time that I was lucky enough to see Jeffreys perform live was at the Montreal Jazz Festival in the summer of 2007, where an acoustic performance of this song was the highlight of an electrifying set. During the song's tag, Jeffreys sang of some of the city's famed skyscrapers: the Chrysler, the Empire State, the Pan Am - and when he sang, "We've got those two big towers" as if they were still standing, the crowd went wild. There was a collective realization that he was right - in a very important way, we still do.

Here's Garland's contribution to "Memories of John Lennon", edited by Yoko Ono and released in 2005:
I was in and out of the Record Plant in the early 1970s. I had found a home with a bunch of great people commandeered by one of the best recording engineers of all time, Roy Cicala. Roy was unique in every way, in his recording techniques and his terrific sense of humor. He guided me, along with a brilliant team of musicians, through my first solo album, recorded in studio B: Dr. John, Bernard Purdie, Paul Griffin, Chuck Rainey, Winston Grennan, David Bromberg and the Persuasions. Studio B is where I met John Lennon. I entered the room and sat down at the console, which I’d become very familiar with. Roy introduced me, and John was immediately a quipster. No aloofness, no cool, no Beatle-ness – pretty much a regular guy. Yoko was there as well, and she was friendly and welcoming. John was enthusiastic, not quiet or brooding. Any time I was in a recording studio I always felt it was my playground even though the clock was ticking away the dollars, and John had the same schoolyard attitude. He was playful and very appealing.

Around this time, I was thinking about recording “Help”. I think it was a few days later that I ran into John on the tenth floor and mentioned that “Help” was a favorite of mine. Wouldn’t you know it, like any songwriter, the mere mention that you might want to record one of their songs brought a package with the lead sheet to my small studio apartment in Gramercy Park. John had sent it off to me. I won't act cool about this; I was thrilled that he had it sent over.

We ran into each other a few more times, always at the Record Plant. I knew Roy was having the time of his life working with John, and I had enough sense to keep my distance and stay busy with my own work while I was there. The excitement of his being around and accessible was really fun. A few hellos and a couple of waves were enough for me. Some time had passed, and I was in Paris working on a few songs for a new recording. I was with my dear friend Antoine de Caunes, and after a night out carousing, we had just gotten to sleep at around eight in the morning when the telephone rang. It was the president of the Beatles fan club of France with the horrible news. John's sudden death was a shocker and hearing the news stunned me. An end to someone I looked forward to seeing again, to getting to know maybe, to discovering what he was up to through his music. An end to his great creative juice.

I was never really a great Beatles fan when the early craze hit. Those Beatle melodies and lyrics were too teenybopper for me, as I mistakenly thought back then. I was in love with Motown, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles and then the Rolling Stones. John Lennon fit right in with this group. His point of view cut right through. He spoke to me, and I believed him. He had an edge, which I was interested in. He was serious, and he reminded me of Dylan. And he made me laugh. I never did record "Help," but I'm thinking about it again.

There are so many great songs and performances. Two of my favorites are "Instant Karma" and "Come Together." The albums that I liked the most, and that still inspire are Imagine and John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band. Going back, it's A Hard Day’s Night and the White Album. The solo recordings, the songs, the sound, the musicians and the production and the flux fiddlers and his passionate renditions. The venom, the gentleness, his vulnerability and honesty on all his songs has given me license. We are always looking for a few clues, some direction, a bit of information, a little style, some guidance, permission if you will, to take a few chances. It takes some courage and I'm always so excited when it's handed down to me. In 1980 I wrote "Jump Jump," and dedicated this song to John on my Escape Artist album in 1981.

A Man of Diversity, With Music to Match: Three Decades After Rising to Fame in the City, Garland Jeffreys Returns With a Downtown Show and a Record in the Works

It's been a while since New York has had a chance to enjoy the music of Garland Jeffreys, a favorite son who was a regular presence here in the 1970s and '80s. The once-prolific songwriter hasn't released a record in more than a decade, and rarely performs in his home city, though he has played a number of European tours. Now, with a new album on the way, Mr. Jeffreys is set to perform Saturday at the Highline Ballroom with his band, the Coney Island Playboys. Appearances at benefit shows aside, it'll be his first New York show in three years

"The band actually has nothing to do with Coney Island," Mr. Jeffreys said of a quintet that includes a drummer from Belgium and an accordionist from South Africa. "But you're looking at a guy who grew up in Sheepshead Bay, Brighton Beach and Coney Island."

Spend an hour with Mr. Jeffreys at a restaurant a short walk from his Stuyvesant Town apartment, and you'll find a contented man. Happily married and a proud parent of 14-year-old Savannah—a promising singer in her own right—Mr. Jeffreys is working on his new album. At age 67, he looks at least a decade younger and is eager to find new fans and welcome back those who knew him when he released the album "Ghost Writer," which included his oft-covered "Wild in the Streets"; the international hit single "Matador"; and "Escape Artist," an album recorded with members of the E Street Band.

Mr. Jeffreys's star faded too soon, perhaps because radio couldn't slot him: His albums included folk ballads, reggae tunes, big rock numbers and social commentary. "They didn't know what to make of me," he said. "Everything was compartmentalized. I really didn't have any thoughts about it, but I discovered down the line it was trouble. Steve Van Zandt said to me not long ago, 'Garland, I know you all these years, but I listen to your music and I still don't know you.'"

Had he been born earlier, Mr. Jeffreys could have had a career as a jazz singer: You can find videos online of him performing with Sonny Rollins and Carmen McRae, and his voice recalls Jimmy Scott as a tenor. Had he been born later, he might have been a peer to Citizen Cope and Ben Harper, who mix up their playlists and benefit from followings not bound by the dictates of radio.

As a child, the music Mr. Jeffreys heard at home—Count Basie, Dinah Washington, Nat King Cole and Billie Holiday, among others—led to an appreciation of doo-wop, Frankie Lyman and Fats Domino. "Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke too," he added, "but they were a different breed. Martha & the Vandellas, Barbara Mason." He paused to sing a snippet of Ms. Mason's hit "Yes, I'm Ready." "I loved Motown and Bob Dylan at the same time."

Mr. Jeffreys's songs are seeded with memories of being the rare child of African-American and Puerto Rican background in his stretch of Brooklyn. His best friends were Italian-American, but his experiences with racism sting to this day. As we spoke, he recalled being the only black child at Sunday mass at his local Roman Catholic church on 15th Street in Sheepshead Bay. At the same time, he fondly remembered visiting Coney Island with his family and hanging out with an interracial crowd.

With his stepfather working two jobs to fund his education, Mr. Jeffreys went off to Syracuse University, where he met Lou Reed and the Rascals' Felix Cavaliere. (He is still friendly with both.) He spent a few semesters studying in Florence, Italy. "Imagine that," he said. "A kid from Sheepshead Bay." When he returned, now fluent in Italian, he set up in the Village and his career began, building to its early '80s height. Looking back, he finds joy in knowing his success allowed him to send his mother and stepfather on a trip to Europe.

Today, most of Mr. Jeffreys's back catalog is out of print in the U.S., though you can find import versions of some of his albums online. He has a following in Europe, where he tours every few months. He retained the publishing rights to his compositions but, he said, "I'm getting hurt. People aren't buying albums. As a songwriter, there's a limit to my earnings."

Mr. Jeffreys said he's in the final stages of completing his new album—his first in 13 years. Active on Facebook, he encourages followers to write to him; one did recently: the grandson of his only sibling, a sister he'd seen once in his life some 40 years ago. He and his sister are now in touch and growing close. "It's so strange," he said. "How can you love someone you don't know?"

Mr. Jeffreys thinks now is the time for him to score again with his music. "Maybe there's a lot more room for the kind of artist I've been with all kinds of styles," he said.

Garland Jeffreys has been promising a new album for a long time now but it looks like the wait is nearly over. An email from Jeffreys camp advises that recording for the album is now completed and the album is currently being mixed.

The email goes on to say “The songs are a real reflection of where Garland is at these days, emotionally, philosophically, chronologically and rockingly. They are across the board great! As ever, some of the best players and background vocalists have a hand in these tracks. Once they’re mixed and mastered we’ll be giving you more details about the where and how to get it, as well as performances related to its release.”

That sounds like great news.

Jeffreys is one of those great artists who have never been to Australia. Hopefully the release of the new album will prompt the opportunity for him to play live in Australia – he would be a brilliant addition to a Bluesfest line-up around this time next year.

BENEFIT CAMPAIGN FOR HAITI SURVIVORS’ BY NYC STUDENTS/SCHOOLS, COMMUNITIES AND PETITE ABEILLE

On Tuesday January 12, 2010 around 4:55pm local time, an earthquake which registered 7.0 Mw in magnitude, struck near Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital, taking the lives of over 200,000 people, leveling their homes, schools and hospitals. Fifty-two aftershocks, over the following 12 days continued the devastation and struck further fear in survivors. More than a million people are now homeless and hundreds of thousands injured. Virtually all affected by the quake are still without clean water, food, medical care, shelter, and other basic amenities.

A unique and growing fundraising campaign, a collaboration of New York City’s diverse multi-cultural communities, grew out of the vision of Pascal Jadot, a young Manhattan middle school student and musician. Pascal’s desire to do a concert with his band, Sidewayz, to benefit the children of Haiti, is creating a groundswell of support that has grown into a multi-faceted relief campaign.

The focal point of this campaign will be the ROCK FOR HAITI Benefit at Petite Abeille, 401 East 20th Street (at 1st Ave.), on Sunday March 7, 2010, 5-8pm.

In addition to a performance by the SIDEWAYZ rock band, entertainment for the evening will also feature the extraordinary young singer-song writer, Savannah Jeffreys, who will perform a few of her original compositions. Internationally acclaimed recording artist, Garland Jeffreys, is scheduled for a limited appearance and will perform two songs. Jose Obando, Latin musical instrument consultant to the Museum of Modern Art, and his Salsa All-Stars band will add their up-tempo rhythms and musical heat.

All Benefit proceeds will be donated to Doctors Without Borders (USA)/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the American affiliate of the international medical humanitarian organization formed by doctors and journalists in France in 1971. Today, MSF, which received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999, provides aid in nearly 60 countries to people threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, lack of healthcare, or natural disasters. MSF provides independent, impartial assistance to those most in need.

In and around Port-au-Prince, MSF has over 700 emergency workers providing medical care to earthquake survivors. Their teams are currently working in Choscal Hospital, Martissant Health Center, Trinite Hospital, Carrefour hospital, Jacmel Hospital, and have established a 100-bed inflatable hospital in the Delmas area.

Donations can take many forms:
• Monetary Funds: you can make out a check to Doctors Without Borders
• Services: please contact us to discuss the type of services for example: printing.
• Goods: please contact us to discuss your proposal. We are accepting any items not too large in size, with significant value and in good condition. These items will be auctioned/raffled off on March 7th at the ROCK FOR HAITI event. We will maximize their value by announcing it on Facebook and Twitter days before the event.
