University of Kansas Medical School Professor, Sandy
Billinger, PT, PhD, FAHA and her son Michael have recently embarked on a
journey to cross the entire length of Kansas to raise awareness and funds for
stroke research at the University of Kansas Hospital.

This is both a personal and professional journey for Sandy. After a horrible car accident 20 years ago,
Sandy sustained mild head trauma, a fractured wrist and spinal nerve damage.
This left Sandy with reduced function in her right hand, and no feeling in her
pinky finger. This life-changing event led her to the decision to go back to
school and become a physical therapist.

Originally from Hays, Kan., Sandy took her first journey
across Kansas for the physical therapy program at KU Medical Center, which she
completed in 2004. She earned her Ph.D. in 2008, and is also currently an
assistant professor at KU Med. Sandy also runs the REACH lab, which is a research lab that focuses on
exercise and recovery after stroke.

“Doctors said being healthy and active before my car
accident helped my recovery and probably saved my life. My son and I have been
through a lot since 1993 and are embarking on this mission together, our Walk
Across Kansas, for a second time,” Sandy said. “We hope to survive a new
journey…and in doing so inspire others to be physically active.”

Sandy and her son Michael started their journey on May 16,
and are on track to finish the 570-mile trek by June 7th (only 23 days!)—Logging an average of 25 miles
per day. She has been documenting their journey on Garmin Adventures, as well
as on the Walk Across Kansas Facebook page, and on Twitter using #WhereIsSandy.
You can also follow her daily activity using Garmin LiveTrack. Check out the picture below from Google Earth...the blue line in the center is her route.

If you want to be successful in an endurance
sport then you have to love pain. There is no secret to success-- you have to
suffer day in and day out and you have to welcome it with a smile.

When you get to the professional level of any
sport, especially triathlon, everyone trains hard, everyone eats right, and
everyone wants to win. The defining characteristic that separates a champion
and a middle of the pack pro is their ability to embrace pain.

When I first started racing triathlon in 2010 I
was very soft. I cringed at the thought of a cold and rainy race and I cringed
even more at the thought of a hot and humid race. If the conditions were
perfect then I was a happy girl and I had a good result. Likewise, if I felt
“good” during the race then it ended well and if I felt “bad” then mentally I
checked out right then and there.

As I have matured in
sport, I have grown to thrive in less than ideal conditions. I have become
mentally tough as an athlete and I know how to suffer. I look at low temps and
heavy rain as another opportunity to gain an advantage over the other
competitors and to use it to my benefit. The same goes when pain starts creeping in during a race. We all know that if we are racing hard then it WILL
hurt. Going into races I know it is going to hurt very bad and there will be
moments of weakness when I want to drop the pace, settle for 2nd place, or even
quit. If you have mentally accepted that these thoughts will cross your mind
before the race starts then you are not surprised when the demons arrive. I
have key phrases that I repeat to myself so that I can get through and continue
racing hard. Just welcome the pain!

New Video Shows Garmin Real Directions™ in Action

Navigation devices have relied on street names to provide directions for years and this has generally worked well. But it's not always easy to see street signs ahead of time to prepare for a turn and our internal research has shown that many drivers prefer to use visual objects for directions, especially in unfamiliar territory. That's why Garmin set out to redefine how navigation devices provide directions. The result of this effort, which took quite a considerable time to develop and test, is Garmin Real Directions.

Navigation devices have relied on street names to provide directions for years, but Garmin has recently made an effort to find a more natural and intuitive way to guide drivers. The result is Garmin Real Directions.

The new feature uses recognizable landmarks, buildings, traffic lights and stop
signs to give directions. For example, it tells you to “turn right after the Starbucks®” or “turn left at the traffic light.” This provides confidence early on that you’re going the
right way and lets you focus on the road instead of trying
to read street signs. It also makes it easier to remember a route. Garmin Real Directions is
powered by the high-quality NAVTEQ® Map to ensure accuracy. Garmin partnered with the leading global provider of map
content to develop a sophisticated data collection and processing system. The landmarks and buildings selected for directions
have been checked rigorously for visibility, prominence and permanence.

Check out the short video below to see Garmin Real Directions in action. The new feature is included in the 2013 Garmin nüvi Advanced and Prestige series.

We saw two of our riders stand atop the podium, earning stage victories in two major events.

Showing its depth, Team Garmin-Sharp is currently competing in both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour of California--where world class cyclists are putting it all on the line for a chance at victory. In Italy, 25-year old Garmin-Sharp rider Ramunas Navardauskas won stage 11 of the Giro d’Italia in a dramatic solo breakaway. We caught up with Navardauskas in a team car as it made its way from his post-stage press conference duties to the team hotel. Narvardauskas recalled that during the final kilometers of the mountainous 182-kilometer stage from Tarvisio to Vajont near the Austrian border he was riding off the front with BMC

So in the last seven kilometers, I attacked. I accelerated once. I accelerated twice, and I saw that he was getting gapped. I just did my tempo and he didn’t have the good legs for that.”

Navardauskas added that during those final kilometers he focused not so much on dropping Oss, but going at his own personal limit. “I was trying to go my own speed and I made a small acceleration,” the Lithuanian

The powerful sprint specialist, who seems to be finding his groove, out-sprinted the field to take the stage victory, giving Garmin two victories on the day! Temperatures have been off the charts in Southern California, yet as the stage heads north and temps fall, we expect the racing to become much more intense. Be sure to follow along during Friday's time trial as Garmin's Dave Zabriskie will do his maximum effort for a chance to taste victory himself.

You could definitely say that about Garmin’s G3000 avionics system! Cessna’s new Citation M2, a G3000 equipped aircraft, recently got its wings, while another was the first in a long line of new jets to be delivered to NetJets. Some exciting milestones have been met as it relates to the G3000 in the last several weeks!

The Cessna Citation M2 is one step closer to flying with the G3000! The M2 “received its wings” last week, as the first set of wings were attached to the fuselage last week. Mating the wings to the fuselage marks the beginning of aircraft system testing; including hydraulics, flight controls, and of course, the avionics! This step is a significant milestone in the overall aircraft production process and brings the M2 one step closer to certification which is expected later this year.

Adding to the latest series of benchmarks, NetJets took delivery of the first of up to 125 Embraer Phenom 300 series aircraft. Equipped with the latest Garmin G3000 avionics suite, the Prodigy Touch Flight Deck is the first touch screen-controlled glass flight deck designed specifically for light turbine aircraft. Three 14.1 inch displays encompass two Primary Flight Displays (PFD’s) and one Multi-Function Display (MFD). Further adding to situational awareness and reducing pilot workload, each PFD may be split into a Multifunction Window (MFW) to view essential information such as the moving map, flight plan data, or approach charts. Two 5.7 inch touch-screen controllers also compliment the integrated system, allowing pilots the ability to input flight sensitive information with ease.

Garmin has continued to introduce innovative and technologically advanced avionics over the last 24 years. As these milestones, benchmarks, and goals are met, it will be exciting to see what further advances are made beyond the G3000 and before we know it, the G5000!

Points were tallied as such: 10 points per fish caught (10 max.) and 1 point per ounce to the nearest quarter-ounce. Team Fuzzy Bear caught the maxiumum number of fish that weighed in at 56.55 lbs, edging out the second-place finishers by .15 ounces. That's all it took for Team Fuzzy Bear to take home the trophy.
