In today’s video, I share my feelings on search engine optimization specialists and how they relate to the evolution of humankind. Being the competitive guy that I am, I have always gravitated towards competitive people and activities. After all, winning is really fun! Throughout my life I have done many things, and for whatever reason most activities that I get involved in I want to be the best at (or at least really really good).

Having now actively partaken in both MMA and SEO as a young entrepreneur, I have viewpoints on certain subjects that may be regarded as uncommon. You see, I feel that the human race has evolved to the point of no longer needing to be able to physically beat on each other/other creatures for survival (generally speaking). So then, what is now the purest form of human competition? I will tell you… Search engine optimization.

“SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION!?” you may be asking yourself right now. Yes, search engine optimization my friends. The internet is the battleground, Google is the referee, and the WHOLE WORLD (the parts of it on the internet at least) are your competition. People are your competition. Corporations are your competition. Freaking GOVERNMENTS and their secret organizations may even be your competition (Ok, that’s a LITTLE less likely, but still…). Turning Point Already Came to Pass… And It Was a Freakin’ Blast!

WOOOOOHH! I just got home from the No Excuses Summit and all I can say is… It’s good to be back! Back home in Sunny San Diego, back to this amazing industry and back to my commitment to you all, my amazing friends! It’s been a transformational four months for this young entrepreneur in more ways than one, and for that reason the video I recorded for you today is all about giving thanks, The No Excuses Summit and where I’ve been and what I’ve been doing for the last four months. Going on the theme of personal transformation, I felt that it would be appropriate to actually share a bit more than that and shed some light on the mystery behind “the Garrett Miller story.”

I’m going to warn you now that just the same as your life, my life has not been all peaches and smiles. I sincerely request that if you are going to click play on that first video down there that you commit and watch the both of them in their entirety. They are under twenty minutes in total, and it would really mean a lot to me. Not so fast, grasshopper. Effective blogging is just as easy as any other form of making money online, which is to say it’s not…or, at least it’s not as easy as some would have you believe. There is no “I Win” button in online marketing; you have to do your homework, put in the time to do it right, and maintain your momentum. Let’s look at those one at a time.

Do Your Homework

Slapping a blog up is easy, but there’s no way you can do an effective job of it if you don’t even know what that job is. Look around the web; a simple search on Google for “effective blogging techniques” returns 86,500,000 different results. The information is out there; you just have to put in the time to find it, read it, absorb it and prepare to put it into use. Trying to “wing it” is about as effective as knitting your own parachute; you’ll be reaaaallll proud of the result… right up until the crash.

Put In The Time To Do It Right

As you can tell from the first point, this starts before you ever type a single word onto a blog if your plan is to use it for your online marketing. Do your research, and then put in the time to actually put that research to use. This means several things; keep putting fresh content on your blog on a regular basis, become an active commenter on other blogs related to your niche, and work on getting relevant backlinks to your blog. All of these things take time to accomplish, but they must be done for your blog to be effective.

Spend too little time refreshing the content on your blog and your returning visitor count will drop. Spend too little time promoting your blog with comments and backlinks and your traffic will suffer.
Grab a quick easy fix of backlinks from sites that have no relevance to your niche, and your search engine placement will suffer, and the traffic you get from those efforts will be untargeted at best.

Maintain Your Momentum

For your blog to be truly effective, you not only have to do those things listed above, you have to keep doing them. True, your blog will get traffic and help your marketing efforts without continuous effort on those things, but the results you get will be much less than if you continue to work on those things. When building a blog, you very much get out of it what you put into it.

The good news is that, over time, you’ll have to put less time into your blog to maintain its effectiveness. Once you get things going, an hour or so each week will be enough to get the most “bang for your buck” from blogging.

As a home-based business owner, being able to maximize “bang for our buck” is a necessary skill in just about every situation we come across. Whatever means you primarily use to drive traffic to your site, be they PPC, video marketing or Twitter, we all do our best to get the absolute MOST out of our efforts. Once implemented, this technique, combined with effective SEO and good, hard traffic-driving work, WILL continuously boost your Alexa rating without thinking about it ever again.

Twitter is not…

• A traffic slot-machine.
• A place for spam.
• Useful at all if you don’t understand it.

Some people seem to think that Twitter is some magical solution to marketing, making it easier than ever to get their message in front of thousands of rabid, ready-to-buy viewers. To this group, all that counts is how many followers you have…the more, the better!…and then you send them affiliate link after product launch after upsell offer until you’re stuffing your mattress with hundred dollar bills.

None of that means a thing if you want to actually help your marketing efforts with Twitter.

Don’t approach Twitter as a confusing, hard-to-understand method to connect with your audience. Think of it as Autoresponder 2.0.

If you’ve been around online marketing for very long at all, you’ve already heard “The money’s in the list” a million times; that’s because it’s a fact. A targeted list of email subscribers is one of the most effective ways to generate money from your online marketing efforts.

No one that understands email marketing would ever tell you “It doesn’t matter if your subscriber list is targeted to your niche; the more the better!”. A small targeted list of 100 subscribers can be much more valuable than an untargeted list of 10,000.

Twitter is no different.

If you spend your time building your follower count to astronomical numbers, the most important thing about that group is still how targeted it is. If you have a list of 1,000 followers who found your Twitter feed from your signature link on the Hello Kitty Online forums, your “Make More Money Online NOW!” tweet isn’t going to bring you the traffic you want.

It’s quality, not quantity, in both email lists and Twitter followers.

Likewise, for your marketing messages to reach an effective audience, you have to provide quality content first. When setting up an autoresponder series, you want to send your list valuable information more often than you send them a call to action. Twitter is no different. If someone follows you, and all they get is ten affiliate links each day, they’ll unfollow you in a hurry, or just ignore you completely.

Don’t fall into the trap of “more is better” when it comes to Twitter; you wouldn’t build an email subscriber list full of random, untargeted people and expect it to do well for you.
