GAZPACHO WITH A SHERBET OF CORIANDER

Here is the start of the Gazpacho.

Then the chef added…

sherbert and Jorge poured in the gazpacho.

The quinua began with

tomatoes drizzled with two sauces.

Now we had to do our work…

the eating.

After the soup and the quinua started, our main course was this duck fricasse.

What can I say? Delicious… words fail the event… a perfect meal.

These recipes are provided by Jorge Espinosa.

Jorge is a proprietor of the La Mirage Garden Hotel & Spa. He was trained as a Chef at the famous Hotel Training School in Bad Reichenhall, Bavaria, Germany. before honing his culinary skills cooking at several notable hotels before opening La Mirage in 1986.

At the La Mirage Cooking school Jorge teaches a unique cooking style that blends ancient pre Incan cuisine with his decades of experience gained while working globally with some of the best chefs in the world.

GAZPACHO WITH A SHERBET OF CORIANDER

Step #1: Peel fresh tomatoes and place into a blender, adding tomato paste, chicken consommé, garlic, pearl onions, basil, olive oil, Worchester sauce,
salt & pepper. Blend and strain into a bowl and place in the fridge.

Step #2: For the sherbet mix coriander, water, sugar in a blender. Place the ingredients into a bowl and place in a freezer to harden.

Step #3: When ready to serve, cut a fresh tomato into small pieces, arrange them on a soup plate into a circle and place the sherbet in the center and pour the cold gazpacho around and garnish with basil.

TIMBAL OF QUINUA TOPPED WITH GINGER OR PARMESAN CHEESE

Step #1: The following ingredients should be sautéed: small cut pieces of chicken, red and green peppers, pearl onion, garlic, fresh dill, fine cut mushrooms, parmesan cheese, olive oil, Worchester Sauce, salt and pepper.

Step #2: Mix the above with the pre-cooked quinua and fill, if possible, into a mold set in the middle of a plate. Two kind of sauces (a rich thousand island
dressing and a Balsamic Vinegar) surround the mold which then is being slowly removed in order not to spoil the decoration. Top it of with either
long slices of Parmesan cheese or optional with caramelized strips of ginger.

ASIAN STYLE FRICASSE OF DUCK

Step#1: Cut a breast of Duck into small pieces, fry rapidly in oil, adding salt and pepper, sweet soya sauce. Add a ginger – soy infusion with
stir-fried vegetables and place on top of sesame rice-noodles.

Good health, a great positive attitude… energy and vitality are the most valuable assets we can have in investing… business and life.

So we always look for thoughts on how to maintain good health that we can share such as music helps you live longer.

One way of looking at everything is as a collage of frequencies.

Good health is the body operating as a bundle of correctly coordinated, naturally harmonious frequencies.

Frequencies even affect longevity.

An article (bolds are mine) at healthkicker.com says: According to Yahoo.com, music has the ability to add years to your life. For years music has been used during healing rituals. In many ancient civilizations singing, chanting and dancing was a major part of their culture.

This was seen after World War II, when many emotional disturbed soldiers found solace in music. Music therapy has been proved to help with depression, high blood pressure and even problems sleeping. This is why a lot of people with problems sleeping listen to soothing sounds such as sounds of the ocean.
In Alzheimer’s individuals, music was seen to reduce apprehension tremendously. Although there is no evidence that music can entirely cure very serious conditions such as cancer, it has definitely been proved to treat many of the symptoms and enhance ones quality of life.

Soothing music is said to help with memory loss, concentration and even logical and reasoning unlike more grating music. It even decreases blood pressure and stress and elevates your mood as well as your immune system!

Classical music such as music by composers such as Bach, Vivaldi, and Mozart can really add years to your life. Orchestra professionals are among the healthiest professions.

Like exercising, music can help you in all departments. It is said those who try and learn a new instrument greatly enhance their IQ scores.
Calming sounds such as wind chimes or fountains can relieve great amounts of tension and stress. Many people have claimed that they have trouble sleeping and it proved by listening to calming, soothing sounds an hour before bed puts your body into sleep mode. Other helpful hints include writing in a journal, meditation or drinking warm milk or herbal tea.

This excerpt comes from the July/August 2010 issue of Country Living article entitled “Making a Country Living – How a mom of six crafted a fabric and accessory business from home.”

Anna Maria Horner has been fabric obsessed most of her life. At age 5 she was already into her mom’s scraps to fashion Barbie dresses. Now a mother herself (of six)the 37 year old designs textiles – as well as everything from pillows to purses – from her Nashville home.

After running a clothing and home goods store for three years she closed shop to focus on creating her own designs. Though it took seven years to land a manufacturing deal for her fabrics, Horner stayed afloat by selling handmade totes and dresses to local boutiques.

She says: “if you have fun, it shows in your work. Her company grossed $250,0000 last year.

Greetings, I just have to comment on your biz idea of selling those wrist bands…

They have no real purpose…. other than to look cute, there is no msg they promote, they are synthetic and therefore not bio degradable…..etc….adnaseum…

I know you are a very conscious and thoughtful human being.. so I was surprised to see this at all…..I felt really sad with the sharing of this idea…..

I would love to see those of who are conscious commit to promoting green and sustainable healing for mother earth biz ideas! namaste.

I hope my reply clarifies a point.

The funky ideas are not suggestions for a business nor do I suggest that anyone do this business. I am trying to encourage people to be imaginative and see that even the craziest ideas can work in the business world. If you look in the funky hall of fame you’ll see a guy who has a business blowing bubbles. This is pretty useless as well. On the other hand there is another making backyard bee hives. That’s good… except they are plastic… but should they use wood?

We have several problems… big ones.

The first problem most of us have to deal with is how to adapt to incredibly rapid change. We face a faltering job market and shaky economy with a crumbling infrastructure at a time the world is shifting from a global economy dominated by the USA… to one where business… and affluence are more spread around the world. This affects kids coming out of school… bread winnners with growing families and those of us who are at an age where we can (or expect to) retire. Everyone is involved.

The second problem is inflation. Massive debt… far beyond the ability to repay in most of the Western world almost guarantees that the purchasing power of currencies will fall… in most of the industrialized, debt ridden nations.

The third problem is the environment. Old forms of economic recovery and social encouragement… throwing labor into processing natural resources to change their utility… trees into lumber…. oil in energy… ore into metal etc. are becoming increasingly ineffective as natural resources and the environment are strained. Bigger can no longer be better. The people with the biggest houses and most gas guzzling cars can no longer be the ones most admired.

Yet we are stuck with a system. It is great to find ways to help the environment… but if you are living in a tent because you cannot pay the rent or mortgage… there is little you can do to help save the environment.

The economic successes… not the failures will lead the way to change.

I once did a study of successful people and this search clarified the fact that most millionaires make their money in business doing something they love. Emerging Market Update

Emerging markets are growing much faster than major markets.

This fact has created great opportunity over the past four decades. Emerging stock markets have risen about twice as fast as stock markets in mature economies with very little extra volatility or downside.

This does not mean we should, just invest headlong into emerging market stocks. We’ll see how this applies to Ecuador in a moment.

First let’s look at some emerging market facts.

Take India as an example. India has been one of the more popular emerging markets and its currency, the rupee was just given a new currency symbol.

To create this symbol the Indian Government announced a contest last year with a prize of about $5,000 Here are some of the top shortlisted designs.

The winning design which is now the Official Indian Rupee Symbol was submitted by an IIT post-graduate D Udaya Kumar.

Here is the new sysmbol.

A recent Economist article “Whoopee for the rupee” tells about this new symbol for the rupee.

An excerpt (bolds are mine) says: A new symbol for the Indian rupee, announced on July 15th, moved some to flights of fancy. A business newspaper suggested that it would “catapult the rupee into the company of four ‘elite’ currencies” which also have symbols. A minister claimed that it would somehow “further highlight the strength and robustness of the Indian economy”. The IMF expects the economy to grow by over 9% this year, although double-digit inflation means that the rupee is losing purchasing power at an unusually rapid pace.

Seed #1: The economy might grow at 9% this year.

Seed #2: The photo of all those people making up the rupee sign illustrates the fact that many emerging markets have a lot of people… huge populations.

This Time it is Different

This time it is different. International business… global investing… our lives.

See below how even in Smalltown USA… the smart money sees that life, business and investing will be different this time.

First, let’s go back to September 2006 when a small town Danish bank, (Jyske Bank started in a tiny farming community and became one of the second largest Danish banks) opened a totally new branch layout in all their branches. To design this layout, they sent a team to the US to come up with new ideas, but did not look in banks. Instead they visited places like Barnes & Noble and Starbucks.

This was smart in my opinion because this time the banking business will be different. Then Jyske invested $72 million dollars in a renovation that gave them a great lead and eventually began to turn all commercial banking upside down.

Several years ago Jyske Bank changed its entire image… and the way its offices were run… looked… interfaced with its customer, because… they saw that this time it is different.

Jyske, Denmark’s second largest independent bank, underwent a major change. In just three months Jyske – pronounced Youska – Bank transformed all 125 of its branches – both physically, and from a business model perspective as well. Their goal: To make Jyske Bank Denmark’s most customer-oriented bank by introducing “Jyske Bank Generation Two,” a bold attempt to enhance customers’ experience and encourage them to change the way they think about banking. As part of this goal, they worked to make the bank less of an office for the employees and more of a comfortable, inviting, and informative environment for the customers.

The Coffee Bar Bank

One way they succeed with the “comfortable and inviting” goal is by hosting some of the most popular coffee bars in town.

In the first months after unveiling their newly designed branches to its 470,000 customers they served more than six tons of coffee. Each branch has its coffee bar near the front window, inviting passers by to pop in instead of rushing past. But even though the free coffee draws a lot of attention, the bank’s profile is about more than just a good cup of java. It’s about meaningful and helpful communication with customers as well as employees and management.

This is where the ‘informative’ part of the goal comes into play. This is the Information Era so Jyske added an extensive use of A/V.

Many Jyske Bank branches, like this one, use multiple, large displays to inform and welcome passers by.

They improved information flow with 1,000 digital signage displays placed throughout the banks’ lobbies, and 500 interactive plasma displays in conference rooms.

Their deposits soared.

So I am impressed with Jyske’s ability to select good investments. I was impressed by the way that Jyske survived the sub prime horrors (they were barely involved) and how they avoided Madoff.

I am especially impressed on Jyske’s continual search for value and by the fact that they are one of the few overseas banks that still accepts US investors. For decades our newsletters and websites have warned about the gradual deterioration of the ability of Americans to bank abroad.

The US government has placed so may restrictions on what overseas banks must do to accept American clients that most overseas banks have simply closed their doors to Americans.

Now even some US banks are looking for ways to avoid Americans!

We can see this in an excerpt from last week’s USA Today article “Will financial firms go abroad to dodge overhaul?” by Paul Wiseman.

U.S. banks, hedge funds and other Wall Street firms are weighing whether to move more of their operations abroad now that Congress has toughened financial regulations at home.

“We’ve talked about it with a number of clients,” says Jeff Visithpanich, principal at Wall Street compensation adviser Johnson Associates. The new bill is creating “a large administrative hassle. … If you own a big hedge fund, there’s very little reason you need to be in New York or Greenwich (Conn.).”

President Obama is expected to sign the most sweeping overhaul of the nation’s financial system since the Great Depression on Wednesday. The bill is designed to prevent a repeat of the financial crisis of 2008 by cracking down on Wall Street excesses.

Once bankers have digested the 2,300-page legislation, the research firm CreditSights says, they are likely to conclude that the U.S. consumer market now offers “less attractive returns and that growth abroad is much more favorable.” (my bold).

In a recent report, CreditSights says Citigroup is in a good position “to deal with the brave new world” because it is already well-established in promising developing markets around the globe. It also noted that Wall Street icon JPMorgan Chase has dispatched top executives to review growth opportunities overseas.

Among the provisions that analysts say could send financial firms packing:

*The Volcker Rule, named for former Federal Reserve chief Paul Volcker, which prohibits banks from trading in financial markets for their own profit but not their clients’ and limits bank investments in hedge funds and private equity funds.

*Regulation of the shadowy market in over-the-counter derivatives, where Wall Street firms earned tens of billions in trading revenue and commissions. During the debate over financial reform, Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., warned, “This bill will chase risky financial trades overseas and further into the unregulated shadow banking system.”

Under the legislation, banks also will have to set aside more capital as a cushion against loan losses, leaving less money available for loans and possibly driving corporate borrowers to foreign lenders, Bove says.

More on banking abroad in a in a moment. First, let’s shift from Denmark to Ashe County, North Carolina and see how another financial institution sees that this time it really is different.

Last year AF Financial Group, the holding company for AF Bank, became LifeStore Financial Group. The changes represent the seventh time that the bank has taken a new name since 1939 when the bank first set up its operation in the Parker Tie building. The Parker Tie building still exists and houses Parker Tie Hardware.

I bought stain for our deck there last week.

The bank, Lifestore, however has moved on… a lot… with seven branches, with its main presence in Ashe County.

Many of our neighbors think that the bank was crazy to change its name. Just as Jyske Bank was criticized by many when they made their changes in 2006.

Yet I see these shifts in Ashe County and in Denmark… by small town banks as a huge progression… a recognition that the days ahead will differ… a lot.

Bob Washburn, the president and chief executive of Lifestore, said of the change: The selection of LifeStore comes from what we really are. Banks are typically called branches and insurance offices are referred to as agencies, but we realize that we are truly a retail store for your life.

Let’s connect dots… to see trends in places as far apart as Copenhagen and West Jefferson. We can see that banking and finances will never be the same.

Take bank privacy as an example. 911 eradicated this. I saw the result this week when Merri and I had to make an emergency trip from North Carolina to Florida. We drove straight through for 18 hours and next day when I went to buy more gas… my credit card would not work. I have used this card for 18 years and always paid the total balance every month. Merri called. “What’s up?” she asked.

We were told the largest credit card fraud in the US takes place at small gas stations. My large purchase of gas in one day was outside my norm and the credit card company shut down my card for security reasons. The security person told us every place and everything we had purchased the previous day and after asking some security questions…of course reopened the card.

We are lucky to be able to bank abroad at all! This time it really is different which is why it is so interesting to be going to Copenhagen next month to speak at Jyske Bank Global Wealth seminar.

I would go even if I were not a speaker to hear the key note speaker, Kenneth Rogoff. who co authored the book “This Time It Is Different” with Carmen Reinhart.

There is a great article about Rogoff and the book in the Sunday’s New York Times by Mary F. Calvert entitled “They Did Their Homework (800 Years of It).”

This article tells how Reinhart and Rogoff started their book around 2003, years before the economy began to crumble. The excerpt below shows why I am so interested in hearing what Rogoff has to say: Like a pair of financial sleuths, Ms. Reinhart and her collaborator from Harvard, Kenneth S. Rogoff, have spent years investigating wreckage scattered across documents from nearly a millennium of economic crises and collapses. They have wandered the basements of rare-book libraries, riffled through monks’ yellowed journals and begged central banks worldwide for centuries-old debt records. And they have manually entered their findings, digit by digit, into one of the biggest spreadsheets you’ve ever seen. Their handiwork is contained in their recent best seller, “This Time Is Different,” a quantitative reconstruction of hundreds of historical episodes in which perfectly smart people made perfectly disastrous decisions. It is a panoramic opus, both geographically and temporally, covering crises from 66 countries over the last 800 years.

The book, and Ms. Reinhart’s and Mr. Rogoff’s own professional journeys as economists, zero in on some of the broader shortcomings of their trade — thrown into harsh relief by economists’ widespread failure to anticipate or address the financial crisis that began in 2007.

Mr. Rogoff, 57, has spent a lifetime exploring places and ideas off the beaten track. Tall, thin and bespectacled, he grew up in Rochester. There, he attended a “tough inner-city school,” where his “true liberal parents” — a radiologist and a librarian — sent him so he would be exposed to students from a variety of social and economic classes.

He received a chess set for his 13th birthday, and he quickly discovered that he was something of a prodigy, a fact he decided to hide so he wouldn’t get beaten up in the lunchroom.

Soon, he began traveling alone to competitions around the United States, paying his way with his prize winnings. He earned the rank of American “master” by the age of 14, was a New York State Open champion and soon became a “senior master,” the highest national title.

When he was 16, he left home against his parents’ wishes to become a professional chess player in Europe. He enrolled fleetingly in high schools in London and Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, but rarely attended. “I wasn’t quite sure what I was supposed to be doing,” he recalls.

He spent the next 18 months or so wandering to competitions around Europe, supporting himself with winnings and by participating in exhibitions in which he played dozens of opponents simultaneously, sometimes while wearing a blindfold.

After much hand-wringing, he decided to return to the United States to attend Yale, which overlooked his threadbare high school transcript. He considered majoring in Russian until Jeremy Bulow, a classmate who is now an economics professor at Stanford, began evangelizing about economics.

Mr. Rogoff took an econometrics course, reveling in its precision and rigor, and went on to focus on comparative economic systems. He interrupted a brief stint in a graduate program in economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to prepare for the world chess championships, which were held only every three years.

After becoming an “international grandmaster,” the highest title awarded in chess, when he was 25, he decided to quit chess entirely and to return to M.I.T.

He did so because he had snared the grandmaster title and because he realized that he would probably never be ranked No. 1.

Teaching stints followed, before the International Monetary Fund chose him as its chief economist in 2001.

I love to play chess… strictly amateur… though in the Hong Kong chess club (long ago) I did once play against a man who had played versus Bobby Fischer. I do not know how his game with Fischer turned out… but do know how our game ended (very badly for me). My chess set in North Carolina, I bought in Hong Kong about 40 years ago… the only material possession left from those days.

My set in Florida (above) is Bakelite and in Ecuador it is made of glass. Chess is like life.

In the opening position in a chess game, White has twenty moves, and Black has twenty different replies to each of these — thus there are four hundred possible positions after the first move. After two moves there are more than twenty thousand positions, and after five moves the number of potential chess positions is into the trillions.

A chess master once said “I only think one move ahead. The right one.” While this is more a product of his own (biased) perception of how he thinks, it is partially right. Chess masters don’t gain the advantage from thinking further ahead but from pursuing good lines, and discarding bad moves. The better a player… the less focus is made on thinking about bad moves.

Chess masters also think in chunks. They think about move in groups, or chunks of moves, while ordinary players think of each move one at a time. Ordinary thought is “I capture his pawn with my knight.” A chess master thinks “Okay, we continue the Sicilian Defense, then I try another gambit. If he accepts, I go for his king. If he declines, I protect my vulnerable bishop.” Chunking allows the player to think further ahead, and frees short term memory, the RAM of the brain.

I always have believed that the thought process in chess is similar to investing. We need to see a bigger picture. We need to deal with infinite possibilities and we need to connect dots and think in terms of larger pictures. In my life, I always have a number of chess games going with a number of people…the boards are set up permanently on the farm and in Florida as well as in Ecuador….and online of course with my son who lives in Bristol, UK. I like the thinking, plotting and enjoy the game immensely.

Know one knows for sure what the economic future will bring and how we’ll end up investing, doing business and living. Thinkers like Rogoff however (I try to fall into this group) simply see a bigger more connected picture.

Whether it is coffee served at your bank (Lifestore by the way serves popcorn)… a new name… a total loss of privacy… another recession or worse or a brilliant recovery… there is one thing we can count on… This time will be different.

If you are looking at the old ways of business and investing, expect that they won’t work. look instead for new ways that the global economy will unfold.

Another funky micro business idea for our funky business hall of fame is to develop a high altitude training center.

Many Andean villages and cities are at 7,000 to 10,000 feet altitude. The village of Cotacachi is 7,500 feet and is at the foot of Mt. Imbabura (seen above from the center of Cotacachi) which is over 15,000 feet.

We support the idea that micro businesses should be profitable, good for owners, employees, customers and society now and in the future… green… humanitarian… fair trade… at least.

We believe in self fulfillment… and that business should be fun and can be unusual… funky… even off the wall and that there are many ways to earn in Ecuador.

One crazy idea we have promoted for years… to no avail so far… is to create a high altitude fitness training camp. There are many hotels, hosterias and large houses that ideal for such facility… and they can be purchased for really low prices.

Now reader Phil Ware confirms that when you train at altitude in Ecuador you get lungs like bellows and legs of steel.

Phil just ran a marathon in Brazil after training in Cotacachi.

He wrote: I wanted to send a quick note on the results of the marathon. The race went very well, I finished in 3:34:10 well ahead of my goal of 4:00. The altitude and hill training in Ecuador really helped.

It was a nice course in the countryside of Brazil. The race started in a small town outside of Dourados and ran along a 2 lane highway with corn fields on either side. The weather was sunny and dry. Eliane was a great support team for me providing water and carbo gel along the course. I was in a great rhythm averaging 5 minutes per kilometer for the first 30k, then slowed down a bit the last 12k. My 26th marathon was a great experience with a bonus of making the Boston Marathon Qualifying time of 3:35.

The science behind this has been explained by Austrian scientist, Karl Pribram.

According to Wikepedia: Pribam is a professor at Georgetown University , and an emeritus professor of psychology and psychiatry at Stanford University and Radford University.

Pribram tries to explain this power we all have within in scientific terms.

Pribam is a neurosurgeon, who pioneered work on defining the power of our limbic systems, the relationship of the frontal cortex to the limbic system, the sensory-specific “association” cortex of the parietal and temporal lobes, and the classical motor cortex of the human brain. He is also known for his development of the holonomic brain model of cognitive function and his contribution to ongoing neurological research into memory, emotion, motivation and consciousness.

What the heck is a holonomic brain model?

The answer to that, I fear, is beyond me. An excerpt from the research paper entitled “Comparison between Karl Pribram’s “Holographic Brain Theory” and more conventional models of neuronal computation” by Jeff Prideaux might explains why the understanding is complex.

The excerpt says: Karl Pribram’s holonomic theory reviews evidence that the dendritic processes function to take a “spectral” transformation of the “episodes of perception”. This transformed “spectral” information is stored distributed over large numbers of neurons. When the episode is remembered, an inverse transformation occurs that is also a result of dendritic processes. It is the process of transformation that gives us conscious awareness.

Pribram says that both time and spectral information are simultaneously stored in the brain. He also draws attention to a limit with which both spectral and time values can be concurrently determined in any measurement (Pribram, 1991). This uncertainty describes a fundamental minimum defined by Gabor in 1946 (the inventor of the hologram) as a quantum of information. Dendritic microprocessing is conceived (by Pribram) to take advantage of this uncertainty relation to achieve optimal information processing. Pribram then says that the brain operates as a “dissipative structure” where the brain continually self-organizes to minimize this uncertainty. The next few sections will attempt to explain the concept of the “uncertainty principle” and the concept of “dissipative structures” that self-organize.

The Uncertainty Principle

Quantum Physics

In quantum physics, the uncertainty principle can be described in the following way (paraphrased from Pagels, 1982): Consider that you have a device that can simultaneously measure the position and momentum of a single electron. Every time you push a button, the device displays numerical values for the position and momentum. Although, each time you press the button, you will get slightly different measurements for the momentum and position. If enough measurements are taken, then a statistical analysis can be performed. Heisenberg defined the term delta q as indicating the spread or uncertainty of the position measurements around some average value and delta p as indicating the spread or uncertainty of the momentum measurements around some average value (for the series of measurements). He then found that (delta q)x(delta p)>=h where h is Plank’s constant. For a series of measurements, the positions can be expressed as an average +/- some uncertainty. Likewise for the momentum. No matter how good one makes a quantum measuring device, the products of the uncertainties can never be less than Planks constant. For example, if you could build a measuring device that exactly determined the position (where delta q = 0) then you would not be able to determine anything about the momentum (delta p = infinity). There is a similar uncertainty relation for the energy of a particle and the elapsed time. For a series of measurements, the product of the uncertainty of the energy (delta E) and the uncertainty of the elapsed time is always greater or equal to Planks constant. (delta E)x(delta t)>=h.

Communication theory

In communication theory, a variation on the uncertainty principle also holds (Gabor, 1946). The measurement of the frequency can be made with arbitrary precision. Likewise, the measurement of the time of occurrence can be made with arbitrary precision. But there is a limit to the precision when these measurements are taken simultaneously. One can exactly measure either the frequency (of for example a tone) or the time (of occurrence) but not both at the same time. For instance, if the time of occurrence were known (indicating an impulse function) there would be frequency components all up and down the spectrum. If, on the other hand, the frequency information was exactly known, one would not know any information about when it occurred. A single peak (or peak pair if you consider the corresponding negative frequency) in the spectrum implies that the tone has infinite extent in the time domain. Analogously to the quantum uncertainty principle, when frequency and temporal measurements are made simultaneously, there is a limit to the precision possible. Pribram claims that the brain functions as a dissipative structure to seek to decrease this uncertainty in the direction of its theoretical limit.

Dissipative Structures

The second law of thermodynamics holds that the entropy always increases in any isolated system (figure 10). This simply means that if something is left to itself, it will move towards equilibrium…it will move towards maximal disorder…its internal energy state will tend to be minimized. There has not been, to date, any confirmed observation that this law is invalid.

I have printed this report and read it and read it… but it still has not sunk in.

However I am getting some clues about how our mind works.

The first clue is that we do not have “a mind”.

Primbam when asked in an interview about the mind said:

Well, I don’t like the term the mind, because it reifies — that means it makes a thing of — something that’s a process. We pay attention, we see, we hear. Those are all mental processes, mental activities. But there isn’t a thing called the mind. There might be something you want to call yourself, but the mind sort of makes something concrete out of something that’s very multifaceted.

This clue is that our mind is not a thing… but a process that takes place in the brain.. body and maybe elsewhere…. at some quantum level.

Life is a continual learning process so anything we do to improve that process is vital to success, fulfillment happiness and reduction of stress.

The second clue is that this never ending process can be dramatically improved by certain types of music.

A study at the AARE entitled THE EFFECTS OF RELAXATION TRAINING ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND
STRESS IN PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS AND TEACHERS : WORK IN PROGRESS by Anthony M. Owens Phillip Institute of Technology outlines the mportance of music.

The AARE is the Australian Association for Research in Education, the Australian national association for fostering educational research in Australia. AARE facilitates contact between educational researchers and supports the development of high quality educational research.

Here are excerpts from this study (bolds are mine): In his discussion of the historical development of holonomic brain theory Pribram (1986) stated that all “the evidence is coming. Not only at the neuropsychological level, but at the psychophysical and psychological level, the behavioural level and in quantum physics (there) is a real paradigm shift away from Euclidean geometry that allows for crazy things, even like hypnosis to be so (p.73).” To many scientists this may appear to be very “soft science” but Pribram appears to believes that the distinction between soft and hard science is not as relevant any more as he sees many fields to be moving in the same direction and the final proof of brain theory will be “mathematically so precise that…there is just no stopping it.”

This study fits into the psychological and behavioural levels that Pribram was talking about. When I started this type of research I had a notion that if a person had some control over their own behaviour and they were able to be in command of their state of consciousness and never be out of control, they would be operating at a rhythm which would be optimal for them.

By gaining the skill to relax at will and thereby alter the state of consciousness, both students and teachers can to some extent gain more control over their own behavior. It was the theory that not only would the fact of the control of their own body and behavior be a positive force but also that the knowledge, derived from consistent results over a period of time, that they had this control would gradually become even more powerful as it affected their self-concept and self-esteem. Theoretically, the effect of their new skill would then permeate and generalize to many related and unrelated areas of behavior and relationships.

An important part of the theory was that all negative, violent, and antisocial behavior took place when a person was “out of rhythm” and behaving in response to the external environment. Each teacher was provided a set of tapes with 14 tracks, a manual with directions for tape use and a set of tape scripts. Each of the tracks on the tapes contained the voice of the experimenter and relaxing music.

The results from the study were positive.

Enough science. Let’s see some examples. Meet Jim Reed.

Jim is a retired airline pilot who moved to Ecuador a year ago and lived in our Casa Blanca condos for the last year. He has become an Ecuador resident and is building a house nearby. I interviewed him on one of our trips to Cotacachi.

Like so many others I have spoken with who have attended our Super Thinking + Spanish course… he claims to be much happier… more relaxed and has become healthier, shedding medication and weight.

Jim lost 55 pounds in the last year and, as reported by so many… without trying… without eating less… without any feeling of deprivation.

One fact that many who enjoyed wonderful positive changes when they have attended our Super thinking course is they learned to use music in a very specific way to reach the quantum states of their intellect.

Music carries universal messages of emotion that go beyond cultural distinctions and learned experience.

A March 2009 report by World Science entitled “Language of music may really be universal” says: Native Africans who have never listened to the radio before can nonetheless pick up on happy, sad, and fearful emotions in Western music, according to a new report. The result shows that the expression of those three basic emotions in music can be universally recognized, the researchers said. Studies found that both Western and Mafia listeners, who had never before heard Western music, could recognize emotional expressions of happiness, sadness, and fear in the music more often than would be expected by chance.   “These emotional expressions conveyed by the Western musical excerpts can be universally recognized,” the researchers wrote, “similar to the largely universal recognition of human emotional facial expression and emotional prosody.” Prosody refers to the rhythm, stress, and intonation of connected speech.

A three minute example of this human connection is the song “Don’t Worry Be Happy” where 10-time Grammy Award winner Bobby McFerrin’s uses audiences to prove the chart-topper. This song is one of the most popular songs of the late 20th century.

A video of this states: Music is just “in there”…hard wired… in our being and just needs tapping into.

Global Investing & Major Market Value Update

We’ll see a global investing major market value update in a moment.

First, let’s look at this important data that Thomas Fischer at Jyske Global Asset Management (JGAM) just shared.

Thomas Fischer is Senior Vice President of Jyske Global Asset Management.

Thomas began his banking career in 1975. In 1978 he started in the trading room as a Foreign Exchange dealer, and spent the next 22 years trading currencies. During this trading career he spent 2 years in London and 10 years in Germany where he was head of the international currency section of a major German brokerage company.

During his time in Germany he successfully completed an MBA focusing on the external environment and corporate finance. In 2000 he joined Jyske Bank Private Banking and was promoted to Manager of International Client Relations in 2001.

In 2008 Thomas joined the newly established Portfolio Management Company Jyske Global Asset Management (JGAM), as Senior Vice President. He is a member of JGAM’s Investment Committee focusing on our Foreign Exchange strategy. He travels the world giving presentations about the markets and the investment opportunities at JGAM.

Yesterday’s message Global Investment Portfolios Focus looked at JGAM’s medium risk international investment portfolio.

This portfolio has been updated and Thomas wrote: On July 15 JGAM’s Investment Committee held its monthly meeting, deciding on how to invest our managed portfolios. All trades agreed at the meeting have now been carried out and therefore we can publish the changes we have made.

The overall asset allocation remained at a neutral position in all asset classes except for a small overweight position on cash in low and medium risk portfolios.

However Thomas added more. Here is information on what the future that we should all be thinking about.

The markets have been caught in a verbal fight between optimists and pessimists. The latter group most prominently presented by Princeton University Economist Paul Krugman, has warned policy makers that the world is heading for the worst depression since the thirties.

Mr. Krugman has on many occasions warned that the US is in danger of falling into a deflationary trap. He is advocating for a much more aggressive stimulus plan as unemployment remains stubbornly high, with little job creation at private companies.

The Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke however, has been more optimistic and recently expressed that the US economy is on track to continue to expand in 2010 and 2011. World trade is up 20% year-on-year but is recovering from extremely low levels.

The optimists also argue, that the corporate sector should start investing soon and thereby improve the employment picture. When the corporate sector increases spending, nominal growth should pick up and help improve budget deficits.

According to The Economist magazine, the recent uncertainty may be down to a fundamental battle between bond investors who benefit from a debt deflation solution to the current crisis; and equity investors who gain more from a nominal growth solution to deficits. The jury is still out and with no clear indication of where we are heading, uncertainty will rule the market. We still believe that we are heading for a recovery and a growth scenario, but as long as the “war” between optimists and pessimists are raging in the media we maintain our neutral positions.

After four consecutive quarters with rising equity prices, Global equities had their first down quarter since March 2009. In the second quarter 2010, the Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) World Total Return Index (with net dividends reinvested, December 1969 = 100) declined 11.2 % in local currencies, 12.7 % in US dollars and 3.5 % in euros.

So who will win out… the optimists or the pessimists?

Personally I am prepared for either scenario. In our last International Investing & Business Conference we looked at seven places to inest now that can prosper in either a positive or negative economic scenario.

Value holds a special place for investors and business people… local or global because value is another way of seeing distortions. Distortions are vacuums and nature abhors a vacuum. Imbalances will always correct themselves. To have success in investing or business… one simply has to spot good value.

Understanding value is the tricky part.

This is why once a quarter we look at a major equity market valuation analysis by Michael Keppler.

For the last quarter to the end of June 2010, Keppler points out that year to date, the MSCI World Index lost 7.1 % in local currencies and 9.8 % in US dollars. However, due to the 14.6 percent decline of the US dollar to 1.2249 versus the euro, the world equity benchmark index gained 5.6 % during the last six months, if performance is measured in euros.

Two markets advanced in the second quarter and sixteen declined. Denmark (+4.5 %), Sweden (+0.3 %) and Singapore (-0.1 %) performed best.

Japan (-14.8 %), Austria (-14.3 %) and Italy (-13.4 %) came in at the bottom.

Year-to-date, four markets are up and fourteen markets are down. The best performing markets in the first half of 2010 were Denmark (+21.7 %), Sweden (+8.8 %) and Belgium (+1.2 %). Spain (-21.4 %), Italy (-14.8 %) and Norway (-13.7 %) performed worst year-to-date.

Performance numbers are in local currencies unless mentioned otherwise.

The Top Value Model Portfolio currently contains the following six “buy” rated countries at equal weights: Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Singapore and the United Kingdom. Keppler’s current ratings suggest that a combination of these markets offers the highest expectation of long-term risk-adjusted returns.

Keppler’s neutral value markets are now: Australia, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Spain.

The low value (sell) markets are: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Hong Kong, Sweden, Switzerland and USA.

Keppler also added: As the chart below indicates, our implicit three-to-five-year projection for the average annual gain of the Equally-Weighted World Index now stands at 14.3 % p.a., up from 11.9 % three months ago. The two main reasons for this increase are (1) the Index dropped by 9 % during the second quarter and (2) fundamentals have improved: Earnings are up 16.6 % — the larger part of the increase coming from disappearing write-offs — and dividends grew by 4.1 %. In addition, the low interest rate environment makes stocks look attractive.

Keppler’s implicit three-to-five- year projection provides some profound clues about how to invest and conduct business ahead.

His statistics suggest to me that the economy and markets are still going to grow. The pessimists… according to my interpretation of these numbers… lose.

This is not the only indicator I track that suggests positive days ahead… not immediately… but over the next three to five years.

From now until October offers a special micro window of opportunity…. maybe one of two before 2002… when the next 15 to 17 year bull cycle will begin.

Right now seasonality is dragging markets down until around November. Perhaps we’ll see one more good bear pull April to November 2011. Then the recovery will begin in earnest. From now until then, history suggests times will be bleakest… a great time to find good value.

Last week’s article Micro Business & Global Investing Success looked at the importance of concentration… of concentration in business…. investing and life.

The article argued that focused experience and information… focused beliefs, focused values and focused determination are threads that weave happiness and success.

Then this article shared how modern media…. especially the internet… might be detracting from concentration and even retraining our thought process to a shallower level.

It asked, “What will be the global consequences be if today’s children globally are being trained to have shallower thought?”

A reader replied to this message and said:

“Wow, Gary, your latest posting about concentration really caught my attention and made me slow down long enough to read (not scan) your entire article. As a teacher, I often plan lessons on my computer. I use the Internet to research information in order to supplement my lessons. My problem has been that I often spend so much time scanning websites and jumping from link to link that I lose my focus and it can take hours to write a simple 30-minute lesson.

“I, too, have worried about becoming addicted to the Internet. I was bragging to my friends that I don’t watch television, when I realized that my addiction to the world wide web could be just as brain numbing, or cause even more withdrawal symptoms than watching television.

“One way I have helped myself is by taking my laptop to a place where I don’t have Internet access. First, I make a mind map of my ideas on paper, and then I start putting my ideas on MS Word, inserting bolded notes in areas that I want to research or confirm later.

“I have had the same intuitive feeling that something was changing in our brains from the effects of reading online ‘where portals lead us on from one text, image, or video to another while we’re being bombarded by messages, alerts, and feeds’. As a reading teacher who works with children struggling to read, I have noticed a profound difference in those students who spend a lot of time surfing the Internet from those who don’t spend much time on the computer. The students who are addicted to surfing the Internet, text messaging, and video gaming, cannot seem to slow down enough to focus and read words on a printed page. It is almost as if it is painful for them to read this way. I have suggested to the school administration that these students seem to have a different way of reading that makes concentration difficult for them. Now a book delves into this theory.

Yet concentration needs to be woven with diversification because in this material world, there is always something we do not know… no matter how much we concentrate. The quantum aspects of our existence are so complex that our logic can only see them as chaotic.

This is because of “sensitive dependence on initial conditions.” Take the weather as an example. The outcome of the weather… despite all our advances in understanding is unpredictable because it is so susceptible to the initial circumstances. Investing and business… our lives are the same…. unpredictable.

Who knows exactly where an individual cloud will be in the sky ten years from now? Or where we will be or any particular economy or investment?

We had an example at our farm of the importance of matching concentration with diversification. We always have a lot of excitement at the farm when we are preparing for our courses on international business and investing as many of our speakers come and stay in our cabins. We often have a lot of rushing to get everything in order.

Our helpers were rushing around when they a screech owl in the barn and wanted us to come down and see it.

We did.

I took my camera along and these shots perfectly depict in pictures what this message is trying to explain in words.

This is a bird’s eye view. Can you see the owl?

Perhaps and you see the whole picture, the rafters the steps, the walls.

But a bird’s eye view requires a complete picture, many dots we can connect.

Our fine feathered friend is easier to see. We know him better now.

Can we creep closer?

Yes. This was one brave owl and now we feel like we really know him.

However I decided to take my chances and walk up the steps. This and a zoom lens let us really see “Mr. Wise One”.

We see the color of his eyes and can literally count his feathers. This is what we try to do with our international investing and our micro business… get into all the details.

This often causes the downfall of a business… having too much concentration on the small stuff.

When we get too close… can we see the walls? Remember those rafters and the steps? Where are they now?

Global investing requires a complete view seeing both the broad horizons as well as the narrow perspective.

If we are too caught up seeing the trees, we miss the forest and having taken a glopbal view, we have expanded our forest… a lot!

So this week we will review several global investment and business thoughts blended with the idea of attaining the correct blend of concentration and diversification.

Today’s review is on Jyske Global Asset management’s Medium Risk Portfolio.

JGAM’s management team use a lot of concentrated research. They collect data from Jyske Bank, Morgan Stanley, Bank Credit Analysts and many other sources. The members of their portfolio management then filter this concentrated data through their knowledge and experience. Then they meet regularly to further concentrate all this data into a group consensus.

Hundreds of years of investing experience concentrated into a decision making process.
