After 5 years of carrying around this trusty little torch I think I can give a fair review of it.

In todays world we're stuck in a catch 22 between airport safety making upstanding citizens safer and holding them back from protecting themselves. So I was on the search for "weapon" that could get through any security including TSA's and still be an effective everyday tool and weapon.

The flashlight is one of our best assets. Unfortunately God didn't give us night vision so we created a tool that ran off of batteries that can allow us to illuminate the night. We've all used flashlight before, camping, blackout ect. but what most don't realize is that it's the perfect weapon in the time of need. The best part is flashlights abide by all TSA regulations.

The Borderless Weapon

The good people at SureFire realized this and developed the ultimate flashlight. The E2D is the one I carry from country to country, because of its size it makes it easy to slip in a pocket or purse. It's waterproof, has enough power to make you see spots and almost stun you and is made of the best materials around.

So how can it be used as a weapon?

If you notice the crown at the top and bottom of the light in the picture above, you can see that the edges come almost to a point. This is in fact a super effective weapon and when swung at someone could be deadly. The light it self is 200 lumens of power. The traditional Maglight is about 12 lumens to give you an idea and it weighs over a pound! There are a bunch of guides how to effectively use this light to your advantage and I suggest you take a look. This flashlight is NOT a toy and I'm not condoning using it as an attack weapon, but a self-defense one.

Do I Really Need It?

That all depends on where you live, how much you travel, hunt and camp ect. For me I use this torch every weekend on guided tours for work around Europe mostly. Even though most of the places I travel are safe, I use it in many different situations, on a dark bus or train for example. If you make the initial investment take care of it you will have it forever. It's been 5 years of avid use and I changed the battery one time! I used from Argentina to Brooklyn and it's been ran over, submerged in the ocean and it still works like the day I got it. It has paid for itself 10 fold. It's also a great idea for people who live in cities like New York, where it's probably the last legal thing you can carry everyday as a civilian. I have girlfriends who carry it everywhere at night and even in the clubs in NYC, they just put it in their purse.

How Much Is It?

The SureFire E2D costs $161.00 dollars on Amazon. When I got this as a gift 5 years ago it costed around $220.00, so it's a deal. Click Here to see it on Amazon.

some videos of the surefire in action

5 Ways To Blend In While Studying Abroad

http://www.garymisner.com/blog/5-ways-to-blend-in-while-studying-abroad

http://www.garymisner.com/blog/5-ways-to-blend-in-while-studying-abroad#comments

Uncategorized

Studying abroad is a great experience. The biggest programs that offer study abroad studies are Rome and Florence. In these cities one can easily navigate and get through day to day life with all the comforts of home and never actually befriend any italians. If this is how you want to do it, fine then you can disregard my five ways of blending in like a seasoned traveler or citizen of Italy and have fun the same. On the other hand if you're like me and want to be accepted into cultures as their own then here are a few key ways I've learned over my year working and living in Italy.

1. “If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay home.” – James Michener

Stay open minded - Tolerance is key to blending in. If something frustrates you, which something will, take a deep breath instead of reacting negatively. If the people around you aren't frustrated it's because most likely thats how things are done. Enjoy your time waiting in line by trying to speak with a local or thinking about how fortunate you are for being there. The most unexpected conversations will be your most memorable.

2. ❝If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. The number one way to stand out from your American peers is to try to converse in Italian. I know it's embarrassing at first and you feel like you're going to faint every time a word comes out of your mouth, but all great things ARE scary at first. Just saying simple things like Grazie (thanks) and Prego (you're welcome) can make all the difference. Not to mention you will always get better deals and be generally more attractive to that boy or girl you have your eye on. Leave Rosetta Stone and get started with these Duolingo.com and this language hacking guide. They are a free or cheap way to dive right in and they are O so effective.

                               3. In Italy high fashion is a big part of its culture. Leave your "comfy" pants home and bring your best. Now I'm not saying leave your style and expressions home, just bring your best. The average italian spends 200 euros a month on clothing. If your planning for your trip and thinking about buying clothes in the USA, save it. Come to Italy with less and spend within your budget to buy your clothes here. Everywhere you turn in Italy will be an opportunity to buy something you love and unique to the USA when you return. Churches in Italy will not let you in in shorts or a tank top so keep that in mind. In fact you won't find Italian wearing shorts at all unless you're at the beach or can see the beach. For the guys tank tops are becoming more acceptable when summer days become unbearable. Here is me packing a few years ago for 3 months in Italy.

4. If they're not well traveled they know a lot about the world geographically so get up to speed on that map of yours. Now given our geographical handicap it's just not as easy for us Americans. So while you're staying in Italy get traveling. On the weekends there are student trips leaving from Rome and Florence that go almost everywhere. Bus2alps is an awesome company with budget prices and well organized trips, oh did I tell you I'd be your tour guide? They do Fall/Spring Break Trips including, Morocco, Eastern Loop and the The Northern Loop. Italians are pretty reserved as a culture, meaning they never want to lose face. You'll most likely never see them talking loudly in public places like this couple or getting black out drunk. Before speaking with Italians in English it never hurts to ask first if you can speak english "Parli Inglese"? They will be much more receptive to what you're about to say. Have fun guys this will be one of the best experiences of your life so don't take it for granted.

Live. Learn. Love. The day I stepped into El Pasaje I knew not one word of the Spanish language and by the end of a Two and a half month lesson plan I could express myself clearly and freely, Make toasts at weddings (something i'm horrible at in English) and have a spanish speaking novia. The classes are more than reasonably priced , about $9 dollars and hour if you sign up for a month in advance. They don't try to fit as many students in class that they can, and if you need extra help they will evaluate you and hold you back or even move you forward, paying attention to your needs. My group class typically had 3 or 4 people in it never more. My average day started at 2PM and ended at 630PM. It sounds like a lot everyday but it went so fast I normally left wanting more and followed it up with homework. All lesson plans are taught in Spanish and they encourage you to make a fool of yourself. While you're there they will send you emails with job opening for your native language or Spanish , I received one that led to a TV interview. Every week or so they will invite the school out for a drink or dinner, the whole staff will show up because they actually want to get to know you. So no more bull@#$% . If you want to learn spanish and you're a terrible self studier as I am get your ass to Buenos Aires and take your classes here. When i arrived i saw that a man was renting skateboards and rollerblades for 15 pesos an hour(USD 3.25). I grabbed a board and joined my friends skateboarding around for about an hour. The 40 degree heat started getting to me so we stopped and had a roadside steak sandwich at a Parilla. Skated a bit afterwards until i was so drained i headed home. When i got home i was welcomed by a few friends going out to a big club in Puerto Madero. Ended up partying until 6 A.M. When i woke up the next morning i felt great, a little sore from the skateboarding which used a few muscles i haven't used in a while. About an hour passed by when i was sitting in the living room talking to my friends and i started to freeze! Im thinking shit how did i get a fever this bad in just seconds?! I told my friends i was obviously feel bad and stumbled to my room where i crawled up into a ball and tried to go back to sleep. As i was laying there i thought shit i didn't drink any water in the past 24 hours of heat and partying so i ran to the kitchen downing as much water as i could thinking i was going to collapse any second. Everyone is now worried checking up on me every 20 minutes or so , it was like having 20 mother's, quite comforting.

My fever finally resided and i went to sleep the next day same thing high low fever fluctuating with the hour. My stomach started to hurt like i had a little gremlin inside chewing on my insides. The bathroom followed shortly after. This happened about every 20 minutes. Two days passed until i found myself sitting on the stairs feeling better contemplating going to the hospital before the fever kicked back in. I told a friend and she said "Lets go!" ill go with you. Note it's 1A.M. and she had work i said no and she insisted. we stepped outside grabbed a taxi where my stomach started to hurt again.
"Hospidale Publico" she said and we were on our way.

As i jumped out of the taxi i realized this was going to be something else. About 40 homeless men were sprawled outside the hospital floors and to the entrance. I entered and the man asked me if i had any documents all i had was my NYS driver license. He took it wrote some info down and told me to wait in the other room. Man i thought i had a huge waiting line with about 30 people sleeping in the waiting area. 10 minutes passed and i was called. Homeless people! It reminded me of a bus station in Argentina more than a waiting room. I went into "Triage" where she asked me what was wrong and thats it. I went into the room with another older gentleman. So it starts the man is talking with the nurses when his makeshift examining table flips over and the old man falls. He gets back up shaken but not injured. I was watching everything like a hawk, the nurse had put on fresh gloves and then was touching the bottom of the guys sandal to comfort him. Not changing their gloves they proceed to stick three IV needles in his arm before getting it right. Now im getting nervous, telling my friend if they try to start sticking stuff in me i'm outa here! As they start filling their work station with goodies for me someone starts banging on the door to get in.

They walked slowly to the door thinking it was a mad patient or homeless person trying to get attention. As she creeped the door open there was a man having a seizure on the floor in the waiting room. i got up to leave the room so they can help him. I came back 10 minutes later and saw a puddle of blood on the floor in the waiting room where the man fell and thought o man he must have hit his head hard that's a lot of blood. They then kicked out my friend and stuck a thermometer in my armpit no plastic or anything. Then they start breaking two vials of something brown and pouring into a bag of saline. At this point i realized this was for me. I tell them no! and ask the nurse to change her gloves. She gave me a dirty look and did. Then i'm arguing with them to figure out what they were putting in my body. A doctor cam and said " He doesnt want help ok forget it and started walking away. I said sternly "No i just want to know what it is first"? oooooo he said and explained it's a substance to stop the vomiting and saline water. Once she changed the gloves i said ok and let them go to work. I sat there for 10 minutes before realizing they never let the pinch on the IV go so it was doing nothing. Not to mention she forgot her thermometer in my armpit. I mean i walk in a hospital and the IV is in before even knowing if i have a temperature?!

I let out the flow of the IV myself. When the IV was finished about 40 minutes later they came back to switch it with antibiotics. As she hooked up the antibiotics she dropped the bag without checking it or purging it she connects it. I noticed a small drip coming from the bag and realized that when she dropped it it split the bag so it was filled with air. Now my attention is at the top of the bag which was pouring Antibodies into me faster then hell because it had a hole in it. At the top it was bubbling like a shaken can of soda. The end comes along and all i see it air! Knowing it was more than my bloodstream could handle i grab the tube and pinch it. Called the nurse ten minutes later she comes by and sees me holding it and trying to take the bag down off the rack. She takes the IV out not even noticing if she changed her gloves and left the room. 15 minutes later she comes back in and says why are you still here. She never told me to leave!

She had left a prescription on the table that i didn't notice and just walked away. It's now been about an hour and a half since the man had the seizure. i open the door to leave and what do i see on the floor. The same puddle of blood sitting there with no clean up crew in sight. I walked outside grabbed a taxi and got home when my stomach started hurting more than ever. I proceeded to walk from my room to the bathroom about 20 times before finally residing on the toilet itself. Not knowing if this stomach ache was from the Anti vomiting medicine or what. I woke up on the toilet a few hours later and finally started feeling better walked to my room as the sun was coming up just starting to think about all the things that happened in a 2 hour hospital trip. Amazing.

Oh i'm fine now, and yes i will be eating the roadside parillas again. I can't help it!

Tim Ferriss- Cold Remedy 4HWWS

http://www.garymisner.com/blog/tim-ferriss-cold-remedy-4hwws

http://www.garymisner.com/blog/tim-ferriss-cold-remedy-4hwws#comments

business

travel

interested in reading the four hour work week? [...]

interested in reading the four hour work week?

Entrepreneurship As A Career

http://www.garymisner.com/blog/entrepreneurship-as-a-career

http://www.garymisner.com/blog/entrepreneurship-as-a-career#comments

business

the good life

Career is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as a person's "course or progress through life (or a distinct portion of life)". From this moment on your work experience has started and puts you on a track towards your long and exciting career.

There are a ton of similarities between a "normal" career path and that of an entrepreneur. The problem is entrepreneurs don't see them, causing them to get frustrated quit and start a "normal" life. If they had just known that having their 2 year in the making business or idea fail was just a fast track path to their goal. Entrepreneurship has never been so easily accessible as it is today. When the entrepreneur fails the NCP gets fired. They must learn from this and try to find another job. When one idea sticks for the entrepreneur the NCP gets a raise. When the entrepreneur gets a write up in the newspaper the NCP gets a promotion. It's not that rebellious. Delayed gratification will pay off as much as it would for the the NCP employee. Stop looking at each business as the be all end all because you may just be working at the deli stage of an NCP. When your idea gains traction DO NOT think it's over because you may have just got a job as an NCP. People.

I knew I needed to build the brand around customer service after having previously seen the Yelp reviews from my competitors. I figured it would bring more laundry to the new family laundromat "Spin City", and would give me something to do in the mean time. I love business and even more building them. So i built a business model bought a website and boom comeclean.it was started. How is it a business you ask. "Aren't you just like the chinese delivery guys". Well on the surface it may seem that way. "How is it a business, what is your product?". My answer: customer service, period. I am set out to make doing laundry the easiest. That is by catering to everyones needs. Let's call it a "laundrierge" service. I admit when I first started this business it was about money, and yes i still have to pay rent but quickly i'm realizing this is turning into something much deeper. Comeclean.it gives me the opportunity to meet new people everyday, and i can honestly say thus far all of my customers are great ones and have a sort of bond with each and every one. In fact if one of them called me at 2 in the morning and asked me to come pick them up from the bar so they didn't have to drive, i would be there in a second. So is comeclean.it a business or culture slowly developing in Williamsburg for people who don't have time or interest in doing their own laundry. Time will tell but I think this year is going to be a good one. As for my customer base now you guys rock! I look forward to getting to know everyone.

Thanks!
Gary

11th Month Update

http://www.garymisner.com/blog/11th-month-update

http://www.garymisner.com/blog/11th-month-update#comments

Uncategorized

[...]

Intuition And A Russian Spy

http://www.garymisner.com/blog/intuition-and-a-russian-spy

http://www.garymisner.com/blog/intuition-and-a-russian-spy#comments

all

the good life

Finding myself in an awkward situation i didn't know why or what it was about the beautiful read head in the corner of the room, i just knew it wasn't right...(Back Left Under Exit Sign)It started the second I walked into the room and saw her. A beautiful read haired paled skinned woman starring directly in my eyes. In any other case there would be nothing wrong with this, but this occasion was entirely different. As I looked into her eyes I didn't see what everyone else was seeing and it gave me an uneasy feeling in my stomach. As guys started flocking to this girl I couldn't resist to stand there and stare, I told my friend Holly that this girl is up to something no good. I said these guys all around her dont even see it but I think she's looking for something other then a date. This hunch went on all night, was it a bullshit or intuition. How do you judge the difference? If i let the left side of my brain run the show that night I would have found myself fighting over her with every other guy in the room. After telling too many random people in the room my feeling I eventually wrote the intuition off as an insecurity I was having, having nothing in common with the people in the room. After the event she faded in my mind and 2 weeks later the USA charged a women with espionage. There she was on my T.V.! I couldn't believe my eyes . I mean was it really her? The next day I got two emails from two sepperate people with this artical attached to it. http://roadturn.com/reflections-on-life/anna-chapman-a-bad-bad-girl/ saying "A Russian Spy At DH Launch Party?". Now "gut feeling", what is it and how do we seperate it from fear, irrational thinking?. You dont. You dont have too because it's an emotion. When you think something is not right we've all learned very young that 99.9% of the time something is wrong. So why do people fight there intuition. Why do you question your gut when you get a feeling and try to rationalize it? My guess is because it's convenient. Stop rationalizing things and act on gut feeling's more, they will take you were you want to go and guarantee happiness. I truly believe In anything other than investments your gut should always have a say. My gut is my boss, when it feels good I feel good and vise versa. If you think your job is a dead end, guess what it probably is. If you think your girlfriend is cheating on you guess what she probably is. In any case your intuition always runs supreme. Listen to yourself and you will stay happier and healthier. Stop rationalizing all of the feelings you have because they might be inconvenient at that time. Live!

P.S. I had recently been researching places in the area that I can take language lessons and kept coming up short. For private lessons in french it is 75 dollars an hour. For private lessons in spanish 45 dollars an hour. So thinking about this i sat next to the homeless man and proceeded to drink my coffee.

He said good day i replied, but i had noticed he had an accent so i asked. "What language do you speek he told me 6, Georgian , French , Arabic , English, German and russian". This homeless man now had my attention maybe I can get lessons from him in the park right in front of my house, it would be perfect for both of us, i learn he makes money it's a win win. So I finished my coffee and returned upstairs. Still thinking if i should ask him for lessons. The next day i woke up and got my coffee, there he was again. So i asked "TJ" hey do you remember me from yesterday, in his shape you never know. Sure goodmorning gary he said, i said hey last night i went home and i was thinking maybe in exchange for some money you can teach me arabic.

I had already had a notebook and pen with me . Sure he said he told me he's here everyday anyway and told his story how he is trying to get back to his farm in georgia and how he ended up on the street. So i began to learn now about culture aswel. Now im hooked i sat and spoke with TJ for 2 hours it felt like minutes, and after took me to the local deli where his friends speak arabic and he put me to work. After the lesson i asked him if he wanted a beer so i bought 2 and gave them both to him. His eyes lit up and he told me that beer will do just fine instead of money.

He told me he would spend the money i gave him on it anyway ill just save him the trip. Okay so this man has a problem and im supporting it for language lessons. What can you do!?!?! So i thanked him and now when i want some lessons i go to his home under the BQE and give him a shout and we sit in the park, not to close and he proceeds to give me knowledge that is priceless. When people say they don't have the money or time to do something like learn a language, the time might be right under your nose, just hope it smells better then the one i've found.

I'll keep you all updated, and get some pictures.
Thank's TJ.

<SPAN style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #e6ecf9; COLOR: #000" title="" بعضSOME>"بعض سيضحك العديد من اتبع"

A GOOD EXAMPLE OF FAILURE

http://www.garymisner.com/blog/a-good-example-of-failure

http://www.garymisner.com/blog/a-good-example-of-failure#comments

bhut jolokia

failure

printing money

Okay now failure is not always a bad thing in fact I view it as a blessing, so long as I learn a valuable lesson. This particular one really burned my ass (seriously)....

It all started with my cousin in Italy asking me to mail him a letter with some of the hot pepper seeds I had in my garden. He wanted to grow his plants over there with the seeds from my plant because I ranted how hot they were. So instead of just giving him the seeds from my garden I decided to look up the hottest peppers in the world and try to buy the seed's. A short search on Ebay I searched for Bhut Jolokia the hottest pepper in the world and are only indiginous to the north of india. A guy in california had them and i purchased them for 10 dollars.

Okay heres the catch it was for 12 seeds! I purchased them with out thought because all of the prices were similar and this guy had good feedback. I forgot about it until they came in the mail a week later and i held them in my hand. I just couldn't get over that i paid 10 dollars for this little weed bag and 12 seeds. So i quickly pulled out the white board and started doing work. I searched places in the us first all being a dollar a seed just like the rest. i researched everything but the core purpose of the seeds, to grow them. I finally found a guy in india that would ship whole peppers for 40 a kilo and 25 for shipping. So i went on ebay again and paid 20 dollars for 3 peppers to see how many seeds were in each one and try to estimate the amount of money i can make.

Another week later the peppers came and right away i started cutting them open (not wearing gloves...another thing i forgot to read about) and i found that there was aprx. 12 seeds in each pepper. So i went back ebay and looked up an ounce of peppers and the title said 1 ounce 36 peppers: bingo!!!. If they are selling each seed for a dollar and there is 22 seeds in each pepper and an ounce has 36 peppers and a kilo has 35.5 ounces in it that, 36 times 35 is 1260. 1260 times 12 would make a one kilo shipment that would make it worth 15,120 dollars!

Now i was skeptical and the only way there was 36 peppers in an ounce is if it was dried first. If they were fresh there would only be 3. So went back on alibaba.com and found the guy again 1 week later, and thought i want dry, im not eating the pepper i only need the seeds. So i ordered a kilo, I paid 65 dollars in total, and patiently awaited my first over seas order . 1 long month later i finally said ok he took my money and ten bam mailman , i was in business. I was just thinking that why they are so expensive.

So i cut up 50 peppers and went to the smoke shop and got some bags and glass jars. Everything on me burned but for that price i don't care. I Started an Ebay store and posted all the peppers on it costing me in fee's that i don't remember. In the first week i did great,I sold them all half price because i figured i could afford it at these prices. I now had almost a thousand dollars in my Ebay account, but i felt something was wrong i wasn't getting feedback and i was shipping them fast. About 2 days after that thought, i started getting emails everyday saying that the seeds weren't germinating. I didn't understand why until i researched i bought the dry ones and the seeds were cooked. They had no chance to grow and i know was holding a 1000 dollars in seeds i then learned my lesson.

Know what the f!@# your selling. I had later returned every seed i sold, except one package. The man emailed me and told me what i have done for the 1000th time and then i began to tell him about what had happened and i will return the money right away and he said keep it and schooled me in the art of growing peppers. He was honored to give me his knowledge and if i were going into the business for the long run,I had just been mentored. So over all I only lost about 150 bucks but a hell of a lot of time, but the lesson I learned was priceless. Plus I had all of these peppers that gave me laugh worth way more then 150 dollars. Nothing is ever going to be a walk in the park , crazy profits exist but if at first it seems unreal it's 99.9 percent is not real. So now when getting myself into a new muse i study my ass off. From weekends up at the mountains snowboarding alone taking a bus or carpool how ever possible, but he always did what he wanted to do. Not only did he do many things but everything he touched became second nature to this naturally talented sportbidextrous. I heard he became a pro windsurfer and i remember him when he started giving lessons at a small beach in my town. So i decided to look him up and see where it all took him.

After high school we parted ways and chachi attended stony brook university were he got his degree. After , he decided to pursue his dream of becoming a pro windsurfer his first trip was life changing Bonaire 2009. He met a few euros during his sty that told him stories about how they traveled for months at a time. He was so inspired within a month of returning to home him and his girlfriend packed a Hyundai and road tripped it from long island,ny to Hood River, oregon. This being one of the windiest places on the planet he spent 6 months there. Working part time jobs to get by, focusing on windsurfing, kayaking, snowboarding and traveling. Here's how it went.

"We drove throughout the state, which is filled with mountains, deserts, rain forests, lakes, and rivers."

In September, instead of returning to New York, we went to central California (another windsurfing hotbed) where Amy was offered a contract in her field of marine biology. From there found a whole new range of places to travel to, I even made a trip to Mexico where I scored some epic waves.

There were some set backs along the way, we got caught in a sudden white out blizzard while driving through Wyoming, on our way cross country, with no towns within 50 miles. My car was totalled in Oregon by a drunk driver, I was unemployed for 5 months (which held back our travels a bit) and then I was badly hurt in Mexico with the closest hospital being 6 hours away.
Things go wrong, you just have to deal with I guess. In the case where my car was totalled, I actually got a nice insurance check which I used to buy the van that became my hotel on wheels and helped Amy and I make some weekend trips that we wouldn't have done otherwise. I gutted it and now I can drive just about anywhere I want and sleep in the back.

We went to so many new places in the last year; drove cross country after Bonaire, went to Portland, the Columbia River Gorge, the Oregon Coast, Crater Lake, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, San Francsisco, San Diego, Baja, Santa Cruz, Ano Nuevo and more.

Currently I'm in a town called Lodi (the same one in the CCR song.) It's close to a place called Rio Vista, which this time of year is usually windy every day. Around Mid June I'm going back to the Oregon Coast for a windsurfing contest, and after that I'd like to head back to Portland and the Gorge. There's so much to do that even living there for 6 months wasn't enough time to do it all. In the fall I was going to do the Gulf, but with the Oil spill I might have to wait a bit. I'm definately going to visit Cape Hatteras at some point before winter sets in. That if you do one thing , that forever you will be known for this act, and that you may even make someone else look bad! When really one positive thing you do will diminish 10 negative things. If you go through life always worrying about your name and what people think of it you will lead a very boring normal and sad life.

I know because first i was living it, and it took sometime for everyone to get used to it but now i have a family that would support me through anything i do. If you don't put your foot down you will be living your life to your so called standards that everyone else feels you must fill. I heard someone say a while back that the sure shot way to be unhappy is to make everyone else happy. This is so true how many time have you found yourself trying to please everyone else but in the mean time you your self is so unhappy. What is the point of it all in the end you are yourself and these people you are trying to impress will be nothing but a memory at most.

So start pissing people off , say no to things you don't want to do and always keep your feeling in mind as well. Your name is a name you've been given it at birth, But the obligations that come with it can be changed you don't need to follow the path your name has given you.

Stop taking everything so seriously and go have some fun .

MONTE'D

http://www.garymisner.com/blog/monted

http://www.garymisner.com/blog/monted#comments

all

travel

Everyone has a little gambling blood in them, some lose learn their lesson and some never do. It's not possible to try everything interesting and not get scammed once in a while.. hopefully you will learn your lesson from me... It can be done with cards or 3 cups and a small ball, the man twirls the ball around the cups and you guess which cup the ball is in in the end. Sounds easy, and is if it was legit. So yesterday I found myself walking through Napoli with my friend Danny, I just took money out of the ATM and was walking back to the train station. I see a bit of commotion on the street so I take a better look from a block away and instantly knew it was the Monte. I go on for one block talking to my friend about how I saw a dateline show on the Monte and how everyone around the table is in on it and how you can't win, I even knew the exact scam.

As we were passing I said hold on lets watch a few people lose all of there money. As I sat and watched I couldn't catch the scam in act. It was simply amazing I was guessing right in my head every time if the people playing where guessing right or not. I still knew it had to be a scam .. I guess I had to learn the hard way like everything else, I do know that when you think your getting over on someone that you're actually the one about be had.

So now my friends are saying "ok this is for sure I saw him sneak it under the right cup". So I fumble for a 20 and hand it to the man, he says "no theirs only 50's here" so thats the minimum. My blood started pumping knowing I was getting jerked but an uncontrollable devil on my shoulder is screaming to hand the money over. "Screw it here" I said.

The man lifts it and the ball isn't there big surprise. I've been monte'd for 78 american dollars in 5 minutes by 4 scam artists and the devil on my shoulder. So why did I bet anyway? Why didn't I just stick to what I knew and move on. The same reason why every drug dealer says "i knew it was a cop but i sold it to him anyway". It's a impulse that many can't control to make fast money. Just another slap in the face to remind me when making decisions to stick to what you feel/know and don't let your emotions make decisions for you.

It could have been more that I'd lost so i'm thankful it was only a 78 dollar lesson. When on the road you always seem to be presented with easy money opportunities, if it sounds easy, looks easy, chances are you'll lose a lot of money or go to jail, same principles apply for anything. Don't give in to the temptation and let your emotions take over.

The Monte if you don't know what it is or how it works:

RUNNING AWAY WITH YOUR WORST ENEMY

http://www.garymisner.com/blog/running-away-with-your-worst-enemy

http://www.garymisner.com/blog/running-away-with-your-worst-enemy#comments

all

Your not happy about where you are in your life. Why didn't getting away from it all set you free from this burden inside you? It's pretty simple, because your running away with your worst enemy, you! What makes you think running away with the person who is causing all of these problems will make the problems go away.

So running away wont solve anything but being idle won't either. You need to first find out where these problems are coming from and hit them head on. In my case it was deadly procrastination that i was battling. So i needed to find the source. I never had an end in mind or a specific goal to strive towards. Always putting everything off to the last minute, or coming up with all of these money generating ideas and not knowing where to start so i would just quit. Frustrated with my behavior i took off, sure that my genie would come out of his magic lamp and i would be given everything i wanted. Oh how wrong i was.

So i found out, no one act will cure all your problems. I needed to deal with this. I started Managing my time and setting goals. You should set a goal, write them down, talk about them ,carry a note in your pocket do everything you can to stay focused. One goal at a time. Don't set 50 goals and don't make the end of the goal to far away or you will get bored. Back to the night when you finished that project you had in school in 3 hours , when you had a year to complete it.

Some of you will be lucky enough to focus no matter where you are and some need a controlled environment to keep on track, only you can distinguish.

When setting your goal:
Make them fun and be genuine
Don't just say i want to be a doctor because you think they make a lot of money this will get old.

Make short goals: maybe you want to start your own website or get your own place or learn how to play the piano. Your decisions don't have to be permanent have fun with it.

Keep it manageable and reward yourself when complete. ..... Always reward yourself!!!

If you don't who will?

HOW OPPORTUNITIES CAN LEAD TO .... You want to work? I said always, why not? I figured it would be an odd job and i would make a few bucks and maybe some contacts. He kept running his fingers together soldi soldi he said (money) his enthusiasm was making me excited maybe their will be some real money to be made. He said he would pick me up tomorrow at 5 in the morning and we would make manifesti. Manifesti is when you put flyers around the street and billboards of political figures for campaign.

Im thinking this should be fun, something i've definitely never done before. He also said i would get 35 euros per hour. This is great considering the average hourly wage in southern italy is around 4 euros per hour. So i got a few hours of sleep set my alarm , grabbed some beat up clothes out of my cousins closet and i was off. A bucket of water with the glue mix and some brushes to brush the glue over the poster's. He starts to speed away recklessly, "ok gary we need to do this fast, fast". Im thinking what the hell am i doing its pitch black 5 in the morning im in the car with a crazy guy a bucket of glue posters of a guy ive never seen in my life and it all started to come together why everyone in the bar didn't jump to this opportunity.

I asked him is it legal? "UHH yeah yeah don't worry , its not legal exactly but nobody cares". Im thinking to myself then why the hell are we doing it at 5 in the morning and you are dressed in all black. As i was thinking skreeech! the car come to a halt , he jumps out with the bucket pops the trunk and tells me to grab the posters in the back. He starts slapping glue all over another guys poster and then i realized this isn't looking so good. We put about 20 posters over the competitor and moved on to the next, everything seemed peachy keen.

We do this for about an hour, then the second to last spot i hop out. Hands filled with glue a little tired from waking up early. I walk up to the billboard and scope it out while my friend fills the bucket with more water from a street fountain. This time it was different , holy shit these posters are still wet , the competitor must be right here somewhere. If he sees us putting posters over his 5 minutes after he did im sure it will lead to a political fist fight.

Then it happened "CHE CAZZO STAI FACCENDO?" someone yelled out meaning what the f@ck are you doing. The man starts running at me with a gleam in his eye and the 5 foot brush he used to put up the posters. I knew he would swing it by the tone in his voice. I got a rush of adrenaline and launched grabbing the stick from his hand throwing it over the fence and started beating him. After a few punches ,my friend runs over starts speaking Napolitan to the man and he tells me to get off. The man runs back to his car and speeds off like he can't believe what happened.

"Abbiamo vinto"!!! my friend said..(we won) With the adrenaline still running through my veins i celebrate not because we won because i'm great full the guy didn't shoot or stab me. So i ask him does that always happen. He said "Yeah all the time but nobody usually fights they just run away , and go somewhere else.

Holy shit really i mean that guy looked like he wanted to fight. NO NO he just wanted to tell you to move to a different spot., but don't worry we won now we own it. We decided to make it our last stop and headed to my cousins bar for a cafe'. My friend still talking about the fight im thinking shit 35 euros bloody knuckles glue in my eyes , chance of getting arrested..

IS IT REALLY WORTH GIVING EVERY OPPORTUNITY A SHOT? What can we learn from this?

Mixing emotions and money has never been a good idea. Those who dislocate there emotions from there decisions with money play the game. Those who let there emotions get the best of them are the ones getting played. I mean seriously its only paper. As children we all played monopoly, I bet you could remember building a fortune and very quickly. I always liked the game, and ive tried just about everything you can try when it comes to investing. Ive failed ALOT of times and usually it was because i got emotional.

Now if you look at me Im 23 years old, i can go broke another 300 times and probably be alright, in fact better off. Every time i failed i learned a very important lesson that helped me fail again but this time in a different way and so on and so on. If you are not losing your not playing. Yes if you don't play you don't lose , but you can't win either. When im investing i keep the same principles that i use in my everyday life. Separate your self from the crowd. Now lets take a look at the stock market. The stock market can be a very good tool to make your fortunes, there are many ways to play this game market analysis, reading piles of spread sheets and earnings reports and trying to guess what's going to happen next. For the stock market you need a very high tolerence for failure. Typically the average day trader loses more then he take's.

It's volatile and not very transparent. In fact you have no control at all. I like to play for fun instead of buying $300 jacket ill play 300 in the market and so on and so on. Never listen to any mass media when investing in the market. If you have a financial advisor and mutual funds that when you lose eat 100%, but if you win then they take responsibility and take a share for themselves, you should probably think again. Let's get to the investing that i enjoy, its a little slower also very lucrative and a hell of a lot safer. My philosophy is very clear, buy real things. If you can see it touch it or even smell it it's better then a number getting typed into a computer.

You hand a man your life savings and you get a piece of paper. Woohoo! When buying real things such as hard asset's(gold, silver, oil) ,real estate, investing in small business you tend to hold on to the money longer. All of the riches families in history own real estate business's and deffenitly some hard assets. Diversification in the stock market to me is not having a basket of stocks that are in all different sectors. How is this any safer or even diversified when you have all your money invested into the same thing, the stock market. You need to spread your money out through out different markets and play them all.

Im not going to get into investing too much rite now, but the point im trying to make is don't follow the crowd also in money playing, and this is the one thing in life i recommend keeping your heart out of.

Now get out there and lose some money learn and do it again!

I AM NOT A FINANCIAL ADVISOR.
