The Worship Arts BBQ is only a few days away! I’m really hoping to see you there! If you haven’t RSVP’d yet, please check your email where you will have gotten several emails from me explaining how to do so!

This is our opportunity to thank you for all that you do for worship at Gateway! It’s also a great chance to get to mingle with the people involved in Worship Arts at our church – the people you might not get to mingle with very often.

Playing with a click track

If you’ve played or sung with us on a weekend over the last year, you’ve played with a metronome. We are doing this for a couple of reasons. The first is that is helps us play together much more tightly, which is huge! If we’re all playing to the same beat, our music will come off much better. Seems to make sense, but when we don’t play with a click, you can hear the difference. Sometime I’ll put some recordings with a click track on the blog so you can hear how big our tempo variations can be when we don’t play with a click.

Another reason we’re playing with a click, is so we can take advantage of some of the technology that’s available. When we’re comfortable playing with a click, we’ll be able to play with loops that are out there for worship songs. We’ll also be able to play with videos that have much more impact than what we might normally do on a given weekend. It opens up some big possibilities for us.

Below is a good self assessment to see where you are in terms of your ability to play with a click.

Beginner – unable to stay with the click. The playing tempo lopes in and out of time as the player(s) first rush the beat, then compensate by slowing down.

Advancing beginner – this is where the player is now able to follow the click accurately, but his playing has become stiff and constrained. All the focus is on following the click and not much is left to create a groove or musical feel.

Accomplished – this is where the player or the band as a whole are able to follow the click precisely while maintaining an infectious and inviting rhythm.

Advanced – at this level, the player has mastered all aspects of playing with the click and taken it to the level of an advanced skill, or art form. One of the most fascinating tricks I’ve seen studio musicians pull off in this realm is a thing I call the “tempo illusion.” Let’s say there’s a ritard in the middle of the song. By playing ever so slightly behind the click, while gradually playing more softly and using fewer notes and less rhythm –through the course of the ritard, these players create a tempo illusion that sounds exactly like a slowing of the tempo, but the tempo has actually not changed at all. When the click is removed, the listener would swear that the music has slowed down through the “fake” ritard. It’s a fascinating and inspiring thing to watch, and I hope readers might take this as a motivation to work hard on click skills.
