I always knew that my kids ski days were powered by chocolate (my mother tells of a friend who practically skied backward tempting his young'uns along the tracks with outstretched goodies.

The Chelsea Nordique are holding their 4th annual Cookie Beiner on Saturday, March 13th from 8:45 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

It is not a race but a series of huts/checkpoints in Gatineau Park where skiers are rewarded at each checkpoint with delicious home-baked cookies.

Who’s invited? Racing Rabbits and Adventure Rabbits from Chelsea Nordiq (parents and siblings) and fellow Mini-Midget and Midget skiers from Nakkertok, Skinouk and Kanata Racers.

More info at http://www.chelseanordiq.ca/cookie.html

Note: that website says "Cookie Biener" is "a blatant rip-off of the famed Norwegian race, the Birkebeiner." Birkebeiner in turn is supposed to mean "birch leg" or "birch leggings" because of a tale of Norwegians who wore shoes or protective leggings made of birch bark. This would mean that Cookie Beiner should mean "cookie legs" and as such reinforces my argument that children's cross country skiing is powered by treats.

The blog geonarcissa reports that the "Ottawa geomob" did some geocaching this past weekend, finding 10 caches, three of which were inside Gatineau Park.

The post has pictures and it looks like good clean fun.

I do know that Gatineau Park has begun studying geocaching in the Park in order to better understand its impact. Because it is a relatively new activity they aren't sure what the good and bad aspects of geocaching might be. I was told that there are aproximately 200 geocache sites within Park limits and that some of these have not been visited in more than 2 years, making one wonder when do these caches begin to represent garbage left in the park.

As the snow trickles away conversations are starting about bicycling in Gatineau Park. Today at TriRudy a post about road biking rules.

This has prompted me to set up a road biking group here at GuideGatineau where I welcome chatter.

Here's what was posted at TriRudy by Steve Morris under the title NCC Traffic Regulations and linked to a PDF of the law itself:

It's not a long document. Bicycles are mentioned twice, in clause 16.

16. (1) No person shall ride a bicycle on property of the Commission other than a driveway or on a bicycle path set aside by the Commission for the purpose.
(2) No person shall ride a bicycle on a driveway abreast of another bicycle or vehicle.

Nowhere does it mention a "15 rider group limit" as was widely stated last year. It doesn't give any guidelines as to which rider is charged, but I suppose they could charge both, since both would be in violation. For the purpose of these regulations, "driveway" basically means a road other than a bike path.

There is a reference to provincial or municipal law.

4. (1) No person shall operate a vehicle, or cause or permit a vehicle that he has the right to control to be operated, on a driveway otherwise than in accordance with the laws of the province and municipality in which the driveway is situated.
(3) In this section, the expression “laws of the province and municipality” does not include laws that are inconsistent with or repugnant to any of the provisions of these Regulations.
