Gay Pride event is ‘coming out’ for 2009

The annual plymouth prideevent, the region’s largest lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and trans (LGBT) celebration, is ‘coming out’ this year.

With the financial support of a range of local businesses and organisations behind it, plymouth prideevent 2009 will see a full week of activities taking place in and around the city.

It will culminate with a day-long entertainment and information event in Plymouth Guildhall on Saturday, August 22, which is expected to attract more than 3,000 visitors.

A Rainbow Flag parade through the city centre will precede the Guildhall event, starting from the Piazza outside the Big Screen at 11.50 am and passing over Royal Parade to the Guildhall.

Plymouth prideevent, now in its fourth year, is a registered charity which works to raise awareness of the city’s LGBT communities.

Pride Torbay in Drag Queen Record Attempt

The Pride Torbay team have their sights of breaking Guinness World Record at the launch party for their inaugural event at Play Nightclub on Thursday 16th July.

The are encouraging as many people as possible to dress in drag for the evening, so they can make an official attempt at breaking the world record for “the most drag queens dancing in a line.” The record currently stands at 58.

Matt Newbury, the pride Torbay event co-organiser said: “We wanted an exuberant and colourful way to start pride and on hearing of this record attempt, we thought that we would just have to go for it! The evening is open to anyone who is open minded, so we hope people will get rooting around those closets and donning dresses, heels and wigs! We are really delighted that our guest of honour on the evening is one of the most famous drag queen’s in the UK, the one and only Jodie Harsh. She will be taking a break from hanging out with the likes of Amy Winehouse, Kelly Osbourne and Kate Moss to spin an unbelievably exclusive DJ. It’s a real scoop!”

Women wanted for brand new 5 aside football

Coming to Exeter in September is a brand new women’s only 5-a-side league. Supported by Devon FA the league will take place once a week during a weekday evening at the end of the week. Organisers are looking for teams of 5 or more players to join and register their interest.

Final details will be available shortly, but in the mean time if you would like to enter please contact hannah@exeterlist.co.uk

The league has been set up for those wanting to get fit, not take their sport too seriously, without the weekend commitment of normal club football but most of all it is about the socialising. If you want to get a little sweaty, meet new people, take out the weeks aggression and then end with a cool pint then this is for you.

Tina Cousins and top international DJs in Pride Torbay line-up

REMIX @ Bohemia, the newest gay clubnight in Torquay is excited to announce its top line-up for Pride Torbay.

Dance-chart vocalist Tina Cousins and three top international DJs will perform at this year’s event on Friday 17 July.

Tina Cousins achieved global success with the anthemic single 'Mysterious Times' alongside German DJ Sash, which reached No. 2 in the UK charts, and has more than proved herself to be a talented and exciting artist in her own right, finding chart success in the UK and Europe as well as being phenomenally popular in Australia.

While signed to Jive Records, alongside names such as Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Steps and Backstreet Boys, Tina was regularly in the charts with her singles, 'Killing Time', 'Angel', 'Pray' and 'Forever' as well as her album, 'Killing Time', before collaborating again with Sash on the hit single, 'Just Around The Hill'.

Entries are flooding in for the title of Mr Gay Torbay 2009. The event takes place on Friday 16 October at REMIX @ Bohemia, Torquay.

First prize is a holiday for two, along with runner-up prizes including a Spa Day and Ginch Gonch designer underwear.

Promoter Rob Elford said “I’m encouraged by the number of entries within days of the event being promoted. There’s a lot of excitement, especially as the winner gets a fantastic holiday for two. I’m also amused by the number of people asking to be on the judging panel!”

A number of local businesses are coming forward offering discounts to entrants between now and the final in October.

The public will be able to vote by text for their favourite entrant who will then go forward to the final at REMIX @ Bohemia. The event will be hosted by a surprise celebrity guest and will be raising funds for Stonewall and Terrence Higgins Trust.

Businesses around the UK are always harping on about exploiting /harnessing the Pink Pound, but has anyone every actually held this mythical currency in the palm of their hand?

It would seem the answer is “yes” if you are one of the fortunate people who either live in or are visiting the South Devon resort of Torquay, where the English Riviera is rapidly gaining a new reputation as the Rainbow Riviera.

Pink Pounds have been introduced into the local economy, with gay venues across the Bay handing them out amongst people’s change. Stickers have been placed on thousands of one pound coins and have been circulating around the Bay and beyond.

The stickers are also promoting the inaugural Pride Torbay, which takes place between Thursday 16th July and Sunday 19th July in Britain’s premier seaside resort.

New gay clubnight REMIX @ Bohemia in Torquay is set to host the ‘Drag Queen of Drag Queens’ DAVE LYNN. The event on Thursday 18 June is raising funds for the first Pride Torbay which runs from 16-19 July.

The clubnight which had a successful launch earlier this month continues with its line-up of top DJs and the best in live entertainment.

Promoter Rob Elford says “The atmosphere on the launch night was amazing. I feel people were more than ready for a venue and line-up that exceeds their expectations. The team from London, Bristol and Cardiff bear club Come To Daddy, will be taking over Tom’s Cruise Bar at Key West Resort, to host a special party for the hirsute and portly and their admirers. Late extension applied for.

Beach Picnic
It’s Beach Blanket Oddicombe, as we take over this stunning beach conveniently location at the bottom of Babbacombe Cliff Railway. Expect a live music stage featuring the crème of local bands and artists, community stalls, face painting and balloon modelling for the kids, and a fully licensed bar available. Plant your rainbow flag in the beach and don’t forget your swim gear. 12pm – 5pm

Pride Cabaret Street party
Another first for gay Torbay, we will be closing the road outside the Meadfoot Inn for a cabaret street party, starring the likes of Jason Abrahams, Topping & Butch and Rogue Minogue. The event will be fully licensed outside and is a great finish to the weekend. 5pm – 9.30pm.

Thursday 14th May sees the launch of a new gay clubnight in Torquay.

REMIX is at the town’s lavish Bohemia nightclub on Torwood Street. The clubnight will run montly on Thursday’s until July after which it will go weekly. It promises “a night like no other”.

Over the coming months top London DJs will be bringing the sexiest bar grooves to this stunning venue. Gaydar Radio’s GARY H (Club Nation, Trade, Federation, Recreation, Heaven), the legendary MAX SANNA (Prototype Brighton, Recreation, Soulcast) and LEE YEOMANS (Trade, Matinee, Organic) are all lined up.

LGBT and The Media - Good Practice Guide Launched

On Thursday 26th February Intercom will be launching the Good Practice Booklet on how lesbian, gay, bisexual & trans communities and the media can work well together. This practical, user-friendly booklet will be an innovative and immensely useful tool for developing our working relationships with the media, and vice versa! The publication has been produced with the financial assistance of the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

Torquay Gay Community Wants You!

Torquay could become the new Brighton or Bournemouth if its gay community starts acting as one. Local gay businessman Mark Hoyle, who runs a five-star holiday rental business in the Bay, said Brighton and Bournemouth owed their image revamp to the gay communities and there was no reason why it shouldn't happen in Torbay.

Mr Hoyle said: "The gay community here needs to unite. In Torquay, we have only a handful of gay-owned establishments, fighting between each other for the five per cent of the gay community which actually bothers to go out with little emphasis on attracting the other 95 per cent from within Torbay, let alone advertising to the outside world beyond the Penn Inn roundabout.

"It was the gay community in Brighton in the late 1970s which led the way with the regeneration of the resort into the success it is today. Quirky little shops which appeared in the lanes soon led to major investments in the area.

"A united gay community in Bournemouth has had the same effect there too. Why not do the same thing in Torquay?"

The entrepreneur thinks Torbay Council should help promote Torbay as 'Torgay' by subsidising adverts about the resort in the national gay press.

91 year old lesbian on LGBT rights struggle

Jo Monk, one of Plymouths oldest lesbians, will be giving a talk about growing up in the days when homosexuality was a crime, at the launch of a celebration of the citys Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans community.

Jo will be giving a fascinating insight into what life was like for lesbians and gay men in the 1940s and 1950s a period when they were persecuted, ostracised and sometimes jailed because of their sexuality.

Now a key member of Plymouth Pride Forum, Jo witnessed first hand the LGBTs communitys struggle for equal rights during the second half of the 20th century.

She will be among key speakers at the Past, Present and Future evening at the Council House on February 11 an event marking the start of LGBT History Month in the city.

Awareness and Understanding of HIV/AIDS in the South West

To mark World AIDS Week 2008, The Eddystone Trust launches an online survey The Local Picture to find the levels of knowledge, understanding, awareness, attitudes and behaviours of the general public to HIV / AIDS. The target groups are people of all ages, gender, ethnicity and sexuality living in the South West peninsular.

The survey will be available online until March 1st 2009

Results gathered from The Local Picture will be used to inform future interventions, education and training for relevant agencies across the South West Peninsular.

Police Authority Seeking Independent Members

Devon and Cornwall Police Authority is looking to appoint two independent members to serve on the Authority from 1 November 2009.

The members will help to secure an efficient and effective police force in Devon, Cornwall, and the Isles of Scilly. This includes consulting the public about the work of the police and building partnerships between the police and local communities.

Members attend and take an active part in a variety of meetings, participate in public consultation on local policing issues and keep themselves informed of national and local policing issues. Devon and Cornwall Police Authority is looking to attract as diverse a range of people as possible irrespective of gender, ethnic origin, religious belief, sexual orientation or disability.

International Diva to Perform in Bideford

It is with great pleasure that the team behind the raucous new club night KINKYChic are now able to reveal some fantastic news concerning this weekends event at REVZ, in Bideford.

CLAUDIA PATRICE will be performing this Saturday (15th November). She has provided vocals for some of the best-known dance tracks ever released in the charts. You cannot help but notice Claudia when she walks in a room. Her experience as a singer was set off by the many appearances on UK television, stemming from being the most memorable and popular contestant on Blind Date.

Her recording credits include U Took My Love and Free Your Mind, in collaboration with Spiritual Masters, and I Got What U Need featured with 451 Mixing Team.
