When Proposition 8 was passed in California on November 4th 2008 the gay community had a huge step forward in their journey for equality disappear. It was a step that Californian gays, and the gay community as a whole wasn’t willing to accept.

Instead the gay community focuesed on getting it’s message across in the same way it always has – in a peaceful and poignant way. First there were the Prop 8 marches, then came the grassroots movements and groups set up to fight this injustice.

And one of these groups that has made a real impact is the NOH8 Campaign set up by Adam Bouska and Jeff Parshley.

If you think you’ve heard the name Adam Bouska before you probably have, because this award winning photographer is regarded as one of the superstar photographers in the gay community (his work has been featured in DNA and reFRESH as well as on Amazon and tenpercent.com) and it’s this photography that he and Jeff are using to make a silent but very powerful protest.

Beginning with Jeff’s own photo on a social networking site, this project than grow to use everyday Californians as their subjects. The momentum of this project though soon saw the subject range increase dramatically, with people from all works of life including the military, politicians, lesbian mothers and even celebrities like the gorgeous Billie Myers, Debbie Gibson, American Idol stars, Mikalah Gordon and Blake Lewis and choreographer Ben Friedman being more than happy to be painted with the NOH8 protest statement on their faces and duct tape across their mouths as a symbol of the fact that the gay community is not being heard.

For me the NOH8 Campaign it’s one of the most powerful and beautiful Prop 8 protests I’ve seen, and I’m really glad that thanks to the world of social media (Facebook, Myspace, Twitter etc…) this anti Prop 8 project is one that’s going to keep growing and growing (it’s currently being a higher trending topic (#noh8) on Twitter than the Iran Election and Sacha Baron-Cohen’s new Bruno film), until something is done about the ridiculous passing of Prop 8.

Not managed to check out the project for yourself yet? Well there are a multitude of ways including the NOH8 website, the NOH8 Twitter account, the NOH8 Facebook Group or the NOH8 Myspace Group.

When most children come out to their parents as gay they are met with a shocked response that often then turns into some form of acceptance, but one where things are still kept quite hush hush concerning the extended family and family friends.

The reason why for some is partly shame, but for others they feel in a strange way that they are protecting their children from the pain and hurt that the discrimination gay people often face.

The reality though is that it’s not the right thing to do. We as a gay community don’t want to be hidden away so we’re not hurt. We want to take action so that the laws of our lands make sure we and future generations are never made to feel like that.

This very public confrontation though is something many parents find hard to stand by their children and push for, but there are exceptions – like Helen Doody.

Unhappy that Dermot Ahern, the Irish Justice Minister had failed to respond to her son’s letter about the need for greater equality for Civil Partnerships, she took it upon herself to write to him too giving him, like any good mother would why you’re naughty, a very good telling off in a letter that has now gone global.

Dear Mr Ahern,

My name is Helen Doody, you have already received and failed to reply to a letter that my own son Declan sent to you a week or so ago. So like any good and decent parent I am now trying to get you to listen to and protect my child – it is the very least that any mother would do for her own children.

I read Declan’s email and everything he said to you in the e-mail was true. He had a very tough time growing up in Abbeyfeale, I can still picture him crying in the mornings before he went to school because he was afraid of the people who were going to be waiting for him – bullies who would beat the living daylight out of him, people who crushed the very spirit within him. I tried numerous times to help him, I spoke to teachers, to the parents but the problem got a quick-fix but a weeks later it just continued on.

Declan was always a very shy and quiet boy but as the bullying continued he became more and more invisible. His Dad and I spent nights talking about him, wondering would he go to school in the morning, would he come home that evening with a ripped jumper or would his school copies be destroyed, we tried so hard to get him the help he needed but as the bullying continued, he started to shut his family out.

All of this began to change however the day Declan came out to me. I am not going to pretend that I handled it like a saint, it is a shock to the system, you don’t think about your child being gay, you just assume they are straight and when Declan told me I didn’t know what to do. I thought I had done something wrong, I thought it was my fault, I really thought that this was it for my son, when people started to find out that he was gay his entire world would turn into a living hell but it didn’t.

Over the coming weeks he began to change, I finally started to see him smile again and there was something different about his heart too. I saw my son reach a very dark and lonely place at the age of 16 but even at his lowest my son, had the courage and strength to come out and say he was gay.

He went to college with a new look on life, he finally seemed to be enjoying himself and it was only then I realised that there was nothing wrong with Declan. If my son was happy, if he was no longer worried about what other people thought about him then I knew that there was nothing wrong with being gay.

For many years he had kept a secret from me and his family because he thought we would reject him, like so many people had done to him before and now at the age of 23 he has graduated with a degree, a higher diploma and a masters. He has become the fine young man that his father and I are so very proud to be able to call our son.

When I heard on the news that gay people would now finally be able to register the relationships like any married couple I finally thought things had changed and I suppose many other people around the country like me thought the same. However I have now realised that what you plan on doing is nothing short of telling the gay community that they are still not equal. You will not tell my sons that they are not equal to their brothers, friends and the rest of society. Your Civil Partnership Bill is not good enough for my family, and hundreds, thousands of other families in this country. I might not be the smartest person in this country but even I can tell you that this bill is all but worthless and will only further the opinion that gay people are not the same as everyone else.

I have been there for all my sons when they have had their hearts broken by girlfriends and boyfriends. I helped them pick out gifts on Valentines day and shopped around for a Tux for the Debs. I have met boyfriends and girlfriends, I have liked some and been frosty to others. I have thought about each and every single of them getting married to someone that they love and who will love them back as much as I do.

I have six sons Mr Ahern, six very beautiful boys who became six very beautiful and upstanding young men!

Two of my boys are gay. Four are straight. Two are firemen. Two love playing video games. One loves to cook. Three of them love cars. Five of them have had their tonsils out.

All of them are my sons.

You have the power to change this country so do the right thing and change this country for the better, wake up and realise that there is still time to clean up this mess and give gay couples the same rights as straight couples.

I am asking on behalf of my gay children, their gay friends, my gay friends, my family, I am asking you as a member of this country, as a taxpayer but most of all I am asking you as a mother, to help my children and revise this Bill so everyone in this country can be equal.

Yours truly,

Helen Doody

Personally I’m blown away by the lengths Helen Doddy as gone to. Many parents would shied away from taking action, and would probably be fearful of the negative publicity they felt it might bring to their child.

Helen is one of the new generations of parents of gay children, and an example for all, because if things are to change we need is more brave Mums like Helen who won’t try to change us but will stand with us to push for changes so their grandchild won’t needed to be shielded from anything thanks to the changes in the law that we made.

From the moment the news that Michael Jackson had died hit the press there has been t-shirt after t-shirt released to commemorate his death – some pretty awful and some actually quite impressive.

However for me, the best t-shirts are the ones that were around before the Kind of Pop were no more, like the Michael Jackson Thriller t-shirt and This Is It T-shirt from Truffle Shuffle.

Both available in both ladies and gents styles, these t-shirts are quality products that not only pay tribute to the great M J, but also, thanks to the fact they’re designed by Amplified Vintage are great fashion items too.

The Thriller t-shirt for example is a gorgeous piece of design, featuring a distressed image of Michael Jackson in his zombie guise with the words Michael Jackson and Thriller scrawled across it in purple. Printed on a vintage washed fabric, this tee is a great piece of it’s own but once teamed up with a great pair of jeans and a black jacket over the top, and you’ve got a look that’s very Samantha Ronson.

However it’s the Michael Jackson This Is It t-shirt that is the real winner for me. Featuring a large print of a young Michael Jackson in an orangey colour with the name of what was to be his upcoming tour, This Is It, this t-shirt has a really relaxed feel to it, and thanks to the longer length is bang on trend, and could be worn lose over jeans or leggings or accessorised up with a belt around the middle.

Both of these t-shirts are available, with the option for worldwide delivery online at Truffle Shuffle.

Remember that great single back in 1997 called Kiss The Rain, and the rather gorgeous woman, Billie Myers who sang it?

Well she went on to release two albums - Growing Pains and Vertigo that I listened to constantly before disappearing off the radio, television screens and internet for what seemed like forever.

Well now’s there’s good news – after a seven year break, the woman with the stunning looks and stunning voice is back with a new single, I Hope You’re Happy Now that is currently available for all of you in the US to buy off iTunes, with a third album, Tea and Sympathy to be released in August.

As with the previous two albums, this is an album filled with honesty, whether it be her feeling of self worth, highlighted in the song Anonymous, her struggles with her faith in Send Me An Angel… Is God Dead, the feelings after an unwanted break up and the worst of them all Infidelity in You Send Me Flying.

Personally I can’t wait to hear the album as a whole, and whilst it’s going to be hard for Billie to get the exposure she needs (having taken the brave decision to release this latest album unsigned) I pretty sure that with a bit of help from Twitter and Facebook we can get this amazing woman soaring up the music charts!

Want to show your support for the lovely Billie Myers? You can get the latest information by joining the Billie Myers Fan Page on Facebook and can help get rising up the charts by purchasing the latest single online at iTunes which you can check out below…

Gay Friendly has always been a huge fan of the South African underwear designers Bone Wear but we always had one gripe about them.

The fact that you couldn’t get hold of Bone Wear underwear in the UK.

Now though we’ve got nothing to complain about because Dead Good Undies have just started stocking a great little selection of Bonewear briefs, including the new Cool range of Tight Fit Briefs which aren’t even going to be seen in South Africa until August!

Personally for me there’s one pair of briefs that just jumps out from the rest, and that’s the Bonewear Bijou Red Cool Insert Tight Fit Brief pictured above.

Made from a gorgeous light, stretchy material, this is the perfect brief to be wearing on hot Summer days and looks incredibly sexy with it’s translucent red mesh panels to either side of the white double layered contoured pouch that itself is designed to give your package a great shape.

Definitely one to be seen in this Summer, this Bonewear brief is available, alongside the rest of the this designer mens brief collection in sizes S to XL for £25.00 at Dead Good Undies.

If your current lube is making you feel more itchy and uncomfortable than hot and sexy then the bestselling Bodywise Liquid Silk Lubricant from DIVADirect definitely needs to find it’s way into your bedroom.

Made as a water based lube instead of an oil based one this is far kinder to sensitive skin, and incredibly sensual with it’s creamy lightweight characteristics that will wash off easily without any of yucky stickiness.

It’s made to be safe for condoms and unlike other lubes that promise to taste of strawberries and chocolate but end up tasting more like the sticky gum of an envelope, this is sugar and odour free as well as tasteless.

But don’t think that this makes it a boring lube, because this has a trick up it’s sleeve – a small amount of silicone to get things lively in the bedroom.

Available from £2.99, this Liquid Silk Lube can be bought in either 50ml and 250ml online from DivaDirect.

Sadly due to personal reasons I wasn’t able to attend London Gay Pride 2009(don’t worry I’ll make up for it next year..) so have been busy scouring the web to see what I missed out on and came across some great photos that have me itching for the 2010 London Gay Pride March 2010 to come around

1. Exactly

Loving the title of this photo by idrewuk nearly as much as I love the photo itself. Not sure that Stonewall knew the impact that their Some People Are Gay. Get Over It! Campaign would have when they started it but they should be feeling very proud now!

2. Flags

If there’s one thing that’s quintessentially Gay and Pride it’s the colourful rainbow flag, and this image by Harry Watko captures it beautifully by making them the sole subject of the photo.

3. Pride Flag

Another great image by Harry Watko that focuses on what Pride is all about – brightness and celebrating who and what we are.

4. Gay Ambulance

It’s great to see that even ambulances feel that they can come out as gay these days, and I have to say I’m loving it’s hairstyle. Go girl!!

Another great photo by idrewuk.

5. Union Jack Ladies

Had to end with another great image from idrewuk this time of the Union Jack Ladies – I mean come on what’s a Gay Pride without some drag queens to get the party going!!

Got any other photos from London Gay Pride 2009 that you want the world to see? Drop me an email at hello @ gay-friendly.org.uk or hit me up on Twitter and let’s get something sorted!!

Looking for a hot sexy bikini to make sure you’re getting all the gay girls attention this Summer? Whether you’ve got the boobs of Shane, Bette or Kit there’s a bikini to make sure all eyes are on you, and here are our top five:

1. Panache Paradiso Magneta Bikini

Gorgeously simple in colour, this purple bikini is guaranteed to get you some admiring looks for the ladies with plunging neckline making your boobs look amazing, and with sizes available right up to 38FF it’s a great choice if you’re more of a Kit than a Shane!

The Panache Paradiso Magneta Bikini is currently available for the reduced price of £15 (usually £30) at Brastop.

2. Poko Pana Brazilian Bead Bikini

The passing of Prop 8 was a heartbreaking moment for gays across the world, and in America they haven’t taken it lying down with protests across the whole of the US showing not just how angry the gay community is, but also how diverse and loving it is, and here are our top ten

1. Join The Impact For Marriage Equality Against Prop 8

This may not be the brightest or loudest of Prop 9 protest photos you’ll see but for me has a really strong message as it shows the (ignorant) world that the gay c0mmunity isn’t just one made up of pink clothes wearing men, and strange masculine looking women. We are a community made up of people and families just like them.

2. Cincinnati Protest For Gay Rights

This is another “quiet” photo but one that has a very strong message that I think many of us agree with - that we’re not forcing anyone to think or believe anything we’re just asking like we tolerate their views that they respect us with the same courtesy.

3. Proposition 8 Protest in Sacramento 1

Ouch. Gets the message across simply and rather effectively don’t you think…

4. Propostion 8 Protest In Sacramento 2

Couldn’t help but smile at this one, not sure it would make the most ignorant think any differently, but if it only made a couple of people think then this dude’s work did it’s thing!

5. Proposition 8 Protest in Sacromento

Oh how often I’ve used that very same line when people tell me that I chose to be gay..

6. Meet In The Middle For Equality

… And we love you too. Always great to see that it’s not just the gay community who feel passionate enough to go and march.

7. Prop 8 Protest Sacramento

There may be few words on this placard but there’s a strong message to it don’t you think…

8. Pro 8 Rally

I know I’m probably a bit biased but I really do think that the gay community is one of the nicest and most caring, however l when I feel I and others like me are being mis-treated like with Prop 8 I feel exactly like this guy.

9. Prop 8 Protest 2

Now that’s putting it in black and white… A cross on a bit of paper is just as painful and scarring as being being pelted with stones just for wanting to be who you are.

10. Prop 8 Protest

The Gay community has always managed to be ahead of the trends, this powerful message though shows it’s not always a good thing.
