Tartuflanghe has created their first advent calendar and we are lucky to be able to get it here in the States. Tartuflanghe was created by two chefs in Alba, Italy, the home of Italy’s finest truffles (the kind the pigs dig up). In 2005, they expanded their truffle line with the introduction of Trifulòt – chocolate truffles! And they are good. They have won numerous international awards for their truffles, including earlier this year for their Bacio di Dama flavor, which is in this advent calendar.

TOP TIP: These are soft truffles, so if it’s warm where you are, keep them either in your wine cooler (best option) or in the fridge.

The Tartuflanghe Trifulòt Advent Calendar has 25 windows, each of which is a small box that pulls out to reveal two truffles in each box. This is a sharing advent calendar (or double the fun if you’re not a sharer). There are nine different flavors – all classic Italian flavors, including pistachio, hazelnut, coffee, and amaretto. If you’re sharing the Tartuflanghe Trifulòt Advent Calendar, be sure to check the flavors before you give them to your children, just in case. Some have coffee and one has amaretto, but the mix in the window boxes is random. Each truffle has the flavor marked on the wrapper, so you can check them all.

TOP TIP: If you’re concerned about the flavors and want to make sure each day has a flavor your little can eat, go through them all and resort the flavors the way you want. You can also buy extra truffles in the flavors you want (https://tartuflanghe.us/search?q=trifulot) and substitute those for the coffee, amaretto, or any other flavors you need to replace. Then hide those away for you to treat yourself with during the holiday season.

There is an added feature in this advent calendar that is sure to be a hit with your littles. As you take each window box out and remove the truffles, replace the box back to front and by the time you get to the last day, you’ll have revealed a Christmas image that everyone will enjoy. You can save this advent calendar to use as décor in future years and you can buy more Tartuflanghe Trifulòt to refill it, too.

The Tartuflanghe Trifulòt Advent Calendar is a great gift for yourself and all of your chocolate-loving friends. The box is sturdy, with a magnetic closure, so it can be shipped safely (depending on the temperature). The front and sides of the box are stylishly decorated (almost Alpine in design) and the back of the box includes the ingredients and nutritional information in four languages (Italian, French, English, and German), which is, in itself, another great reason to buy it. Tartuflanghe takes food and food safety seriously and they make great chocolates.

It’s October and that means it’s officially Halloween month! If you are a member of the growing community of Halloween lovers, we have a delightful countdown advent calendar for you! Schylling Toys NeeDoh Funky Frights Squish-O-Ween Countdown Calendar has a crazy box. The neon colors and fun cartoons have a nostalgic element that parents (maybe grandparents – it’s a real 70s vibe) will love and it’s full of NeeDoh squishies, which kids will love.

The interior of the NeeDoh Funky Frights Squish-O-Ween Countdown Calendar is a haunted house, but it’s in fun, funky neon colors, so it’s not too frightening. Trick or treaters are arriving at the house, which has squishies hidden on every floor. The back cover continues the theme and the color scheme and shows two of the squishies, which gives you an idea of the size and the spookiness.

TOP TIP: Save the box. Not only is it adorable and makes a cute Halloween decoration, but it has important information about the care of NeeDoh squishies

The NeeDoh Funky Frights Squish-O-Ween Countdown Calendar has 13 windows – very appropriate – and is recommended for ages 3 and up. The windows require a firm hand (thumb) to open, so don’t stray too far when your littles are opening the windows. The squishies include creatures, finger puppets, and even a Squishtal Ball with a stand. When you open the window, the back of the window cover is also a colorful illustration and tells you what the squishy is. You can see my three favorites in the picture below.

TOP TIP: Even the scariest squishy isn’t too bad, but you can slide the drawer out of the box to see which squishies are behind which windows (you can see the illustrations behind the windows this way, too) and schedule your littles opening the windows to avoid the scary ones going to the littles who would prefer the cute ones, like the Creepy Corn.

We have a delightful advent calendar for you this week! Jack Rabbit Creations’s Winter Woodland Match-box Advent Calendar is a first for us. This is a DIY advent calendar. Well, mostly. The calendar frame and windows are fully crafted and decorated. The DIY part is the treats. You get to fill the box yourself! There’s no theme, no limitation (besides size), and you can mix the types of treats. Candy, snacks, toys, gift cards (in the longer boxes – I checked), vouchers, and more can be mixed in whatever proportion you choose. It can also be used as a family advent calendar, so you can choose who gets which treats.

TOP TIP: Take a picture of the boxes, so you know how to fit them back in, if you remove them all for filling.

The Jack Rabbit DIY Advent Calendar includes 25 separate Winter Wonderland themed boxes, each of which has a charming woodland creature in festive attire. The boxes have pull-out drawers, so they’re easy to open and fill. Each box also has a ribbon, so they can be hung from the tree as ornaments. What we love about this advent calendar is its versatility and customizability. And, most importantly, it is accessible for people who have dietary restrictions, such as allergies or diabetes. You pick the exact treats that your littles (or bigs) can enjoy, and you can use the advent calendar year after year. It can become tradition and, eventually, an heirloom.

TOP TIP: Save the box that the advent calendar comes in to help protect it during annual storage.

Today, we have three advent calendars from Penguin Random House for review. These are all book-style advent calendars and each offers a gift for each day.

Clarkson Potter, an imprint of Penguin Random House, has brought Richard Scarry’s Busy World into this advent calendar. The Richard Scarry advent calendar depicts a very Scarry vignette, showing Lowly Worm and most of the creatures of the Busy World in a winter wonderland. Instead of windows, each of the 25 days is an ornament that gets pulled out of the backdrop. The advent calendar includes a pouch of gold cords for hanging the ornaments.

The Richard Scarry advent calendar is a large, flat book that can be brought with you if you travel over the holidays. The ornaments can be placed back into the advent calendar to use again next year or left behind to decorate wherever you spend your Christmas. The ornaments are flat, sturdy cardboard, so they could also survive the trip home without the book if you need space.

Candlewick Press, an imprint of Walker Books Group, brings us the Where’s Waldo advent calendar. This is a book-style advent calendar with 24 days of tiny Where’s Waldo books. Each book has several Where’s Waldo puzzles, plus jokes and activities. On the 24^th, there’s a special extra treat – a mini Waldo that you can play your own game of Where’s Waldo.

The Where’s Waldo advent calendar is pretty tall, but still fairly flat, so it can be packed for travel. The books are about palm-sized and can be packed back into the advent calendar or taken home without the backing, but you’ll need to be careful about how you pack them. The books are just a few pages each, so you could open the advent calendar in the morning and do the puzzles throughout the day. If you choose to reuse the calendar the following year, the puzzles will be just as challenging (unless your littles have super memory).

Penguin Random House is offering a Bluey advent calendar, too. This is another book-style advent calendar that is also full of books! Each of the 24 windows contains a tiny Bluey storybook. The book, when opened completely and turned over, the front and back covers are a glimpse into the Bluey family Christmas. The inside of the advent calendar is a holiday at a paradise resort with the family playing around the pool.

As with the other two Penguin Random House advent calendars, this one is also a large, sturdy, flat book that can be brought along if the family travels over the holidays. The mini books are easily read in just a few minutes, so could be a bedtime activity if your littles like stories in bed. The calendar’s windows open, so it’s not as easy to reuse, but it’s still possible. If you’re on the road, the advent calendar can be left behind and the mini story books can be brought home, if packed carefully.
