New batteries based on an entirely new type of nanomaterial are claimed to charge more than 40 times faster than today’s lithium-ion batteries.

Over the last half decade, Apple has radically changed what $299 can buy, with major advancements in the processor power, efficiency, connectivity, size, weight and quality of its iPod music player.

With so many devices today ranging from vehicles to computers using batteries, extending the run time can have a significant impact on the usability of things like smartphones and hybrid vehicles.

Researchers have been able to create the world's smallest laptop battery and have done so inside of a transmission electron microscope (TEM) at the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT). "We wanted to figure out how the proposed 3-D designs of batteries can be built from the nanoscale up," said Sanketh Gowda, a graduate student in Ajayan's lab. "By increasing the height of the nanowires, we can increase the amount of energy stored while keeping the lithium ion diffusion distance constant."

The team of researchers has grown a forest of coated nanowires with millions of them making up a chip the size of a fingernail providing a greater surface are than conventional film batteries allowing for more power. "You can't simply scale the thickness of a thin-film battery, because the lithium ion kinetics would become sluggish," Ajayan said.

Apple's latest iPhone software supports a technology that makes smartphone signalling more efficient, to boost battery life and try to combat network congestion.

According to a Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) blog post on Tuesday, iOS 4.2 — released on 22 November — introduced support for Network Controlled Fast Dormancy, which NSN has implemented on the network side and Nokia started building into its smartphones earlier this year.

"Basically, the technology makes the network and the handset work together to create the best conditions for smartphones to work quickly, yet have a long laptop battery life and minimise network congestion," Leslie Shannon of NSN's Network Systems Mobile Broadband team wrote.

Because of the nature of their apps, smartphones tend to constantly connect to and disconnect from the network — they need to do this in order to check for emails or tweets, for example. This clogs up the network and lessens battery life. Network Controlled Fast Dormancy effectively keeps the handset in an intermediate state, so it doesn't have to keep shifting between idle and active states.

"From here, a smartphone can wake up much more quickly and needs to send far fewer signals to and from the network to start a data connection," Shannon wrote. "You get a fast network response and a longer notebook battery life. The new Apple software release supports this way of working on networks that have the technology implemented.

"Nokia also implemented the technology in its smartphones earlier this year. So now the two handset makers that account for half of all new smartphones in the world contribute to an improved user experience and cost reduction for operators."

iPad 2 Set For April Launch

The DigiTimes, a respected Taiwanese technology publication, reports that mass production of the new iPad will start in February.

Foxconn, the Chinese factory that makes components for many Apple products, is expected to produce an initial shipment of around 400,000 to 600,000 units of the ‘iPad 2’.

The DigiTimes reports that Apple has notified Foxconn that they will ship the iPad 2 within the next 100 days. Apple had apparently planned to start mass production in January, but that date has been pushed back because some minor issues still need to be ironed out with the iPad 2 firmware.

Both Foxconn and Apple have declined to comment on the rumours.

Apple has sold more than 7.5 million iPads since the device first went on sale in April. The touch-screen, tablet-style computer has inspired a host of imitators developed by rival consumer electronics firms.

An April release for the so-called ‘iPad 2’ would follow Apple’s usual pattern of introducing new models in a product range on a roughly annual basis.

It is also likely that the iPad 2 will be released simultaneously in the UK and US, unlike the first model, which shipped to the UK several weeks after it had go on sale in the United States. It would be similar to the launch schedule for the iPhone, where the initial model was available in the US first, but all subsequent models have been made simultaneously available in a number of countries.

The iPad 2 is expected to feature a high resolution retina display, similar to the kind found on the iPhone 4, as well as front-facing camera for making FaceTime video calls, and an integrated gyroscope.

Analyst Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities is continuing his tour of the Far East, and on Monday provided investors an update on his second day in China. Though he noted the iPad and 11-inch MacBook Air, in particular he found the iPhone 4 to be Apple's most difficult product to purchase.

He said wait times are around two months and carrier China Unicom is unable to fulfill about a third of preorders. Apple's interest in the market is seen as positive because of the growth opportunities in China.

"Most of the carriers agree that the high-end smartphone opportunity in China is approximately 100-125 million subscribers, which we view as the addressable market for the iPhone," White wrote.

The iPhone 4 debuted on network China Unicom in September, and posted strong sales of 100,000 in its first four days. Since then, limited supply has led to extensive scalping, which forced Apple to require reservations for iPhone buyers.

Though China Mobile is not an official iPhone carrier, White said he believes it has the most iPhones on its network with about 2 million. To help capitalize on that, the carrier plans a tenfold increase in mobile application developers in the first quarter of 2011.

In November, China Mobile set up a website to help users trim their SIM card to fit inside the iPhone 4, which requires a microSIM. The carrier indicated to White it has plans to create a SIM card that will work with the iPhone 4.

Finally, Chinese CDMA-based carrier China Telecom is also viewed as a potential partner for Apple. White said he believes the company is "well positioned" to begin selling the iPhone in 2011.

The carrier has been rumored to be in talks with Apple since October. Apple is expected to build a CDMA iPhone for launch on the Verizon network in the U.S. in early 2011.

Highlighting the potential usefulness of the system, NSN pointed to one of its operators that claimed smartphone battery lives have been increased from six to 11 hours as a result of its recent implementation.

Apple’s iOS 4.2 was made available for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users worldwide on November 22nd and the company’s CEO Steve Jobs described the up-date as effectively turning the iPad into a “completely new product”.

All Day Laptop Batteries Are Coming

It's the holy grail of any laptop user who spends most of the day out of the office.

Yes, thinner and lighter laptops are a blessing. But how about a notebook that will run all day without recharging? When will we be able to hit the road but leave the AC adapter at home?

The answer to that question is "today", depending on the price you're prepared to pay and the compromises you're willing to make (see sub-section below).

Within the next few years it won't be an issue. The march of technology in computer chips and other components will make all-day computing a trait of almost every laptop.

"The challenge for us is to bring all-day battery life to the mainstream so that you take the laptop to work and leave the power supply at home," says Mooly Eden, the general manager of Intel's Mobile Platforms Group.

"But all day means different things to different people. For me it might be eight hours, for you it might be 10 hours. And we need to do even more than that, because as the laptop gets older, the battery life will slowly get lower. We need to deliver 10 to 12 hours without the battery charger. And we will be able to do that, because all-day battery life is not just possible, it is inevitable."

Making notebooks better is what Eden does. Through his revolutionary work creating Intel's Centrino laptop technology, the foundation of the Core line of processors, Eden is considered the father of modern mobile computing.

The Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 chips run faster than any previous generation of Intel silicon, while drawing less power. And even that extra speed is being channelled into eking out extra battery life.

If you divide the laptop's typical working day into tiny slices of time, most of them are spent being idle. Yet the processor is just one part of the notebook. The screen is responsible for the largest portion of a laptop's power drain, followed by the hard drive. Efficiencies in these are slower to come, with fewer breakthroughs and smaller leaps.

That said, notebook screens with LED backlighting draw less juice than the non-backlit models, while also providing a brighter picture.

And while solid state drives draw almost no power compared with the conventional platters of a hard disk, their high price and relatively low capacity makes them impractical for many notebook users.

Seagate is leading the way to a new wave of hybrid hard drives that partner a high-capacity hard disk with solid state memory that automatically stores the most commonly used files and data.

There's also a growing trend towards lightweight operating systems that allow email, music or movies and web-browsing without loading Microsoft Windows.

Typically based on Linux and embedded in a flash memory chip inside the laptop, they spring to life within seconds instead of the hard-disk hammering (and power-sucking) minute Windows often demands - which makes them a boon for shorter work sessions on the go.

Asus, Dell and HP all offer some form of "instant on" mode. Dell's impressive Latitude ON implementation is bolstered by a tiny secondary processor and has inbuilt Citrix VPN support, making it possible to sidestep Windows for much of the day and let the notebook stride into Day 2 without an AC outlet in sight.

Once we hit true all-day computing for all laptops, this will be the target: a notebook that rocks around the clock, and then some.

How to join the all-day computing revolution

If you want all-day computing, here are some shopping hints.

Acer's TimelineX family uses Intel's ultra-low voltage Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 powerplants to deliver upwards of eight hours in a slim and stylish chassis. The mid-range model with a generous 40-centimetre screen sells for A$1600 (NZ$2000) but you can also get models in a near-netbook 30-centimetre screen size.

Option up your new laptop. In most business notebooks the standard dell laptop battery can be replaced by a higher-capacity pack. Dell, HP and Lenovo also offer secondary batteries that replace the CD/DVD drive or attach to the notebook's underside (sometimes called a "travel slice") so you can hit the road with two full tanks of juice.

Look for laptops with fast-charge technology so you can top up the battery quickly by plugging into a power point for just half an hour. Also, place a premium on power-management software that can disable hardware such as the USB and network ports, fingerprint reader and even CD/DVD drive, if they're not being used. All those tiny voltage savings add up.

Squeeze the most out of your existing notebook by turning down the screen brightness and turning off 3G, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi unless you need them. About half the price of a cordless drill, recip saw, or circ saw is spent on batteries. Since replacing these batteries when they fizzle is expensive, many tool users often just get a new tool. New batteries for mobile phones and laptop computers are expensive, so extending their lives will pay off, too. Here are a few simple tricks to maximize battery life and run time.

Heat. Heat is a big battery killer. A battery heats up as you use the tool; that’s normal. But it overheats, however, as you overuse the tool. You should back off a bit and your drill batteries — along with the rest of the tool–will last longer. That doesn’t mean babysit your tools, it just means don’t drill a 1-inch hole in 6-by with your 12-volt drill.

Another heat source comes from storage, especially for users in hot climates. Leaving your cordless tools and batteries baking in your truck box, on the deck, or on a roof all day will shorten the battery’s overall useful life and diminish its ability to take a full charge. This is especially true for high-drain tools like recip saws or rotary hammers. Park in the shade if possible and take tools out of direct sunlight when possible.

Cold. The other end of the spectrum is freezing temperatures. Ni-MH’s chemical reactions stop working at 14 degrees F; Nicad gums up at minus 22 degrees F. While cold won’t damage your battery like a heat wave, keeping the cells temperate will help you work better. It takes a battery an hour to assume the ambient temperature of its environment, so store your batteries inside when you can. If it’s just as cold inside, Panasonic says leaving Ni-MH batteries in the charger warms them up in a few minutes and you’re good to go. For a sluggish Nicad tool, warm the batteries inside or in your truck. Putting the tool in there too, will also loosen up the frozen grease in the gear housings.
