Spring Is Here at Thistle Hill Ranch!

I can't believe how fast Spring is coming upon us here in Texas. Well, if we're honest, Winter never came. That happens in Texas sometimes...no snow, no ice, NOTHING...suddenly, Spring is here!

I wish Spring lasted longer than the beginning of May, but I love Spring in Texas. We have breathtakingly beautiful wildflowers, green grass for miles, and temperatures that are to die for! I try to take every opportunity to be outside. Luckily now, living in the country, it's 10 times more enjoyable, and beautiful!

Sunsets really are better in the country...ok, maybe I'm biased...

And did I mention Spring Babies???

Meet Tinsel, our 1st baby girl born on the ranch!

Bailey, her proud momma, and daddy, Gunners Tinseltown, sure made a beautiful filly. We are in love!

We have 2 more babies on the way...I can't wait!

In the meantime, Spring has everyone on the ranch enjoying the fresh air, beautiful weather, and the lovely Spring blooms.

Thistle Hill Ranch Jumping into 2016

2016 is HERE! I can't believe how fast this last year came and went. Our Christmas was so relaxing. We had such a wonderful time with family.

I hope your Holiday was wonderful too!

We had MORE rain, which brought our tiny creek to a roar, and pond fuller than ever. This picture below, is actually a dry creek bed for run off. It's nice when this is running, because I can hear it from the house.

The Christmas decor is down, house scrubbed and dusted. As much as I love decorating for the Holidays, it is definitely nice to get it all down and start fresh for the new year.

This sofa table was behind the sofa. I realized we need more room in the living room. I put this table where I had the make-shift desk on the right of the sofa. So, again...not a big change, but visually, it really made a lot room. The room looked so much bigger afterwards. I also moved the bookcase, to the left of the sofa. Subtle changes, but we really like the change...For Now, since I'm always rearranging. LOL!

For me, a clean house is the same as a clean mind. I need a clean an organized home, as much as I need an organized life...it calms me.

I know it's not realistic all the time; but, I really do try to stay on top of laundry, and housekeeping. This way, I free up time for the important things like homeschooling, organizing the books for the ranch, (all paperwork for the ranch, is done on a weekly basis), and any other activities for the boys or the ranch.

So with cleaning and organizing, comes redesign. It's never drastic, but I love giving the room a fresh look.

I rarely show my bedroom...I guess it's because it feels crammed.

But, here it is...

So much of our stuff is still in storage. I had the movers bring the furniture I thought would fit in the house, and what we needed for storage.

It ALL fits, and it's all needed, but, it feels crowded. Hopefully this situation will change this year...crossing fingers we can start building soon!

Did I mention how much more difficult the process of planning and prep is on your own land, not a Lot you just buy in the city? Oh well, it will all be worth it!

But, here's our master. What you can't see, is that we have a faux fireplace with a t.v. above it, in front of the bed. It really heats up the room, and makes it cozy.

Below, is what we see when we are in bed. Minus the ugly chain link fence, I love our view. It's definitely nice to wake up to.

I was surprised that this tiny house had a pretty big master bedroom. It really is nice to have the space for my desk, and sitting area.

After making the boys french toast and hot cocoa this morning, after their barn chores, I sat down to breakfast with Miss Scarlett.

The chargers are from one of our cedar trees that had died. I asked Glen to cut them for me, and I'm a lucky girl...he didn't even blink at me, and I had 12 beautiful rustic chargers from one of our trees. The egg on the table is our 1st duck egg, that one of the ducks abandoned. I love having it...so many 1st's out here...trying to capture them all!

Every New Year, I redo, renew, reuse, and then set my New Years Resolutions. But this year, I've adopted the idea of a New Year's Goal! This way, there is no guilt, no failure, just something to work towards.

I've had so many blessings in my life, that I can hardly feel like I need more. One of them was getting the help from my Pulmonologist and Allergy Specialist. I now have my dream life on a farm/ranch and have horses that I can ride, pet, and love on. Something that was always just a dream.

So, in saying my blessings, now to my New Year's Goal...

Stay positive, set goals, but understand they are goals...no deadline, no grade, no report card!

Christmas 2015 at Thistle Hill Ranch

It's no secret I love decorating, and decorating for the holidays is one of my favorite things. Every year, I try to mix it up a little, it may be different colors, or putting decorations normally for the living room, this year in the kitchen. It makes it all feel new...at least to me! Ha!

With so many of my normal decorations in storage it makes it even more challenging. But, I always like a challenge. I had a lot of fun gathering greenery from the ranch and using it all over in Christmas arrangements.

Our entrance is very narrow, and not really an "entryway". So, luckily I had this narrow sofa table, that worked in this tiny space. Decorating it is always fairly easy, because not too much can go here between the lamps. So, I keep it simple. This year, I used an old galvanized bucket I found here at the ranch. It was fun to use something from the ranch in the decor. I'm learning so much history about this area, and this ranch. I love using things that are a reminder of our past.

I also keep the coffee table fairly simple since it is used so much. A little greenery, gold berries, and a leather christmas storage book, which is perfect for storing remotes.

Our grapevine reindeer, a few velvet presents, greenery in the antler bowl on top of a cedar charger, make an simple centerpiece. We homeschool here, so it has to be simple, because this table is used so often.

Even the piano, got a bit of Christmas Cheer. Frosty's hat, and Christmas music open in the antique children's music book.

This is by our back door, in the kitchen. It stores any extras of decor I have...storage is very limited in the house. I added one of my favorite things, the chapel that lights up, and sings carols.

The wreath above the table has the Thistle Hill Mansion, where we were married, hanging in the middle. When we came to see the ranch before we bought it, the hillside was covered in purple thistles, we thought it was a sign...Thistle Hill Ranch was born! This ornament means a lot to both of us.

Our living room doesn't have the best lighting. It's so difficult to get good pictures. Therefore, I'm posting a few pictures of the tree, and Santa.

I couldn't find my large owl topper, so I improvised with this little guy, that I luckily had already.

The writing desk in the living room got a few touches of the holiday spirit too.

Our living room mantel. I made these stockings a few years ago, luckily they are still holding up, HA! I put up our garland, & strung some lights in it. I didn't have a gold ribbon, so I used an old tie, that my husband won't miss, and then built around it with pinecones, greenery from the ranch, ornaments, and pheasant feathers.

Even Duckingham Palace got a wreath.

The front porch is very narrow, but, it still has enough room for decorations. Mr. Duncan gave me his approval.

I hope you all are having fun decorating or enjoying your decorations for the Holidays! I'm ready to take a deep breath and enjoy it too.

While writing this post, I get a text to come outside. I find this...my husband riding Preston's horse Bailey. She's pregnant with a foal, that's due this Spring. She is such a sweet girl. He took her on a walk around the ranch. A perfect way to end this post. I hope your weather is as nice as Texas weather is today...ENJOY!

Life at Thistle Hill Ranch

I always have high aspirations of writing on the blog weekly. Sometimes, I have time, and lately I've had NONE!

So PLEASE forgive me!

I have tried to keep Instagramming to keep my Friends and Family, that read this blog, updated on Thistle Hill Ranch, at least with pictures. So you can always follow me on there too.

So, here we go...

My life is hilarious! Homeschooling 2 teen boys,(always busy), while re-designing inside and out, a car dealership, (what an honor to be asked by my sister and brother-in-law), while lately... being on calf watch, keeping up with housekeeping, puppy training, and horse duties. Luckily I have two teen ranch hands that are invaluable, to help me out, and a SUPER husband. Who's salesperson by day, and rancher by night and weekends...and ladies, he also cooks dinner when I feel like I can't keep going.

One day, I was teaching the boys, left instructions for them, gathered a fecal sample from one of our cows, who seemed ill,

(turned out she was fine)...

That was worth it! (Tongue in cheek)

Then, I was on my way to the vets, to deliver the sample, while talking on the phone to contractors at the dealership....sums up my life in a nut shell.

I wouldn't have it any other way!

~I took this picture of me and Baron...with toothpicks in my eyeballs! Swollen eyeballs...I was so tired! But, I couldn't get over this dog who loves hugs, and still thinks he's 10lbs...not almost 60lbs.

So, I'm a tad embarrassed at how bad I look, but, his precious face, made me post it anyway!

Thistle Hill Ranch has a Lot of Pecan Trees!

We discovered we have anywhere from 80-100 pecan trees. The other 20 or so, still aren't easy to access. But what we can get to, has been amazing. This ranch keeps on giving.

We have now gathered, in a total of 3 hours, by hand, over 10lbs of pecans!

Homeschooling Update

Homeschooling has had an erratic schedule lately, due to my Interior & Exterior design project at the dealership, and ranching; but, the boys are amazing. They are both making A's in Math , which is always my biggest stress, and all A's in their other studies. I don't give the grades, their online programs do that. So I'm very proud! Luckily they enjoy all their subjects, so no pulling teeth here, to get them studying.

Note: the dealership project is moving along and getting closer and closer to completion. I will share the final pictures soon.

They love their Biology and Russian. I'm so impressed at Landen taking High School Biology with his brother, as a junior High student. He loves it and it shows. Preston is taking U.S. Government and loves it. My future politician is breezing through it. It's fun to see how much our ranching life actually helps with their studies. We're always learning something new, and making their regular studies concrete knowledge, makes learning more fun.

In addition to school, they love guitar, and archery. Both boys placed in their class, in their first indoor archery tournament. Preston was 1st Place and Landen was 2nd Place. Here they are above practicing archery on our hay bales.

New House Update

Who knew how much was entailed in building on the ranch. So much more prep than I expected. Things are moving along. Every time I think we have the plans exactly how we want them, we tweak something else. But, now it's to the point where I can see it in my head, and can't wait to start decorating it. This is not easy for me...patience...waiting...and waiting some more. So the tentative date is this Winter/ Early Spring to hopefully start. It's so close I can taste it!

... Patience Jennifer! Yes, I talk to myself often. So far, I've never gotten a "huh"? back...this is always a good sign that I'm still sane.

Animal Happenings

We had two Bull calves born within a week of each other, and they are best friends. They sleep together, play together, and even share moms. Unfortunately, a little over a week ago, we lost a heifer calf. Ranch life is sometimes difficult for a family that's new at it all. We were all so sad!

But, the good news is we have one more baby due this Spring. Then, we rebreed 4 of them, mid-January. More calves next September!

Our horses are all so different. So many different personalities. Some lovey-dovey, some spirited, and one brat.

Our colt is growing by leaps and bounds. He's a weanling now, ready for sale. He's a big boy and muscles looking fabulous! Our yearling looks fantastic too. He is fitted and ready for sale at Edgewood Lanning in Pilot Point.

Our 4 pregnant mares are due this Spring. We will have 2 thoroughbreds, 1 quarter horse reining baby, and 1 quarter horse that's bred for western pleasure. We are excited to see if we will have more colts or some fillies this Spring. We will be selling all colts. We just font have the facility for colt training, or studs yet.

Spring 2016 should be busy around here!

Funny how a cat can coexist with farm fowl, cattle, horses, dogs, & other cats, with no hissing, chasing, slapping, or fights.

This place just seems to be almost Disney-like. All animals are friends, and all animals love their humans. It truly is fun to live here.

Below are the ganders out for a swim, while the goose sits on the eggs. You can see the ducks still in the "palace". We have 4 heating lamps going at night, to keep out the night chill. They are loving the daily swims at the pond, especially since the snapping turtles have seemed to vanish, and the weather is perfection.

Duncan is our farm cat. In case you don't know his story, he showed up out of nowhere a couple months ago, and after not feeding him for several weeks, we realized he was never going back to wherever he was from. So, he's now ours. And bonus, he's fixed. We hear people dump cats all the time on farms. I'm just glad he found us.

He sleeps in a 3 story wood condo, with heating pad, food and water.

Fall Decor at Thistle Hill Ranch

FALL decorating is SO much FUN!

We still have so much in storage, until our house gets built, and this makes Holiday decorating a tad challenging. So many of my fun decor items are packed up. But, I love repurposing and gathering from nature to decorate. Needless to say, Fall is a fun time for natural decor....things from your back yard! FREEEEEE!

A pumpkin here, a pheasant feather there, and it makes me want hot apple cider.

I did have a couple Fall decor bins make it here in the move, and this funny Halloween cat was in one of them. Even though my boys are in their early teens, they still like the fun stuff out too.

This is in our breakfast nook, this little 4 drawer dresser, I got at a flea market for $35 dollars. I have used it in many rooms. I love having it here, because I really needed extra storage. The cloche is on a slice of one of our cedar trees that had died on the property. I had my guys cut me 12 for dinner chargers. The lamp was a gift from the 91 year old lady that we bought the ranch from. I just adore it!

Below, is my formal dining table and sideboard. I made the chalkboard from an old framed print, that I wasn't fond of anymore. I turned the print around and painted the reverse with chalkboard paint.

The wicker tray was from a fabulous wicker coffee table that was given to me. I love the large size of this tray. I have a feeling I will be using this tray in many places.

This is our skinny entrance table, that I got at a resale shop for $25 because it has a broken corner in the glass. That's what lamps are for...cover the blemish please! I love that it's skinny, because the entrance is very narrow. The ceramic container is actually for beverages...or as I see it, anything else I want it to be used for. I love filling it with pumpkins in the Fall, & pinecones and evergreens in the Winter...and occasionally beverages at parties!

The woven tray with leather handles, I found on save-on-crafts.com. I love that online store. I have quite a few things from there. The bronze/gold pumpkin was a gift from my sister Heather. She knows how much I love Fall, and a bronze/gold pumpkin was a much loved gift!

Add some Indian corn, driftwood candle holder, and old family books and I'm happy about the Fall display in the living room. My husband likes that it doesn't get in the way of "optimum viewing" of the t.v. HA!

The front porch, I try to switch up every year. This year I made the "BOO" sign from some leftover drop cloth, and wrapped it over the old ladder rungs. I attached them with safety pins.

This is our breakfast table, with a view of our hay pasture. Here, I added a gray ticking scarf, a little ceramic jack-o-lantern, and the cotton stalks. I wanted to keep it simple and neutral. But, it still has a dash of Fall fun too.

Last but not least, a little literature humor with my Ichabod pumpkin head, on the fern stand. This is near our entrance, off of the dining room. We just finished reading the short story. It's always a fun tale during the Fall season.

I love seeing all the creative Fall ideas on Instagram, Pinterest and of course magazines. I can't wait for Thanksgiving...I'll have to change it up a tad...Because a designer is never really done, especially when it's their home, ha!

Homeschool 2015 at Thistle Hill Ranch

We are entering our 4th year of homeschooling. I have a 7th grader and Freshman this year.

I just finished our class chalkboard, for October, since we were finished with the September board early. I put on the monthly board, the month meaning, special events, historical birthdays, and holidays. I also put up the weekly SAT Vocabulary. They are tested on the vocabulary weekly and have activities that go with them. The bottom of the board has our Group Literature Assignment. This is the book we read together.

They each have their individual literature books, that they pick from a collection of classics.

Then, we have one we read together. The book we are reading right now is a short story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow...getting in the mood for Fall and Halloween. I love letting our literature correspond with our history or season. It makes it more interesting...and FUN!

My 7th grader is doing high school level science, reading, and vocabulary with his older brother, my Freshman. My son, the Freshman, is doing Sophomore or Junior level math, (depending on your school. I did algebra 2 as a Junior, but things have changed), and Senior level English.

Homeschooling means the grade level lines are blurred. Your children can work at "their pace"!

This is probably my favorite thing about homeschooling, and the hardest thing to get used too. But, when they struggle, you go over it until they get it. No one trying to get you to move quickly. And, if you move quickly...well, you can! No rules...you finish when you finish.

I love our curriculum this year. It really is tailored to their interests.

Preston, my Freshman, is REALLY interested in anything having to do with history, financial planning, and politics. He picked a lot of his classes this year...just like "regular" high school. For the last 3 years, I've let them have a lot of input in their studies, but there is still the cores studies, that aren't optional. This year, he has the choice of foreign language, and electives. I have found that this made him more enthusiastic and dedicated to his studies.

Landen, my 7th grader, is so easy going, but he had specific requests this year. He wanted to follow in his brothers studies with foreign language and science. This made my life easier and me one happy mom. Luckily he does really well in science, so this isn't a stretch.

Our daily routine is pretty simple. They have warm-up journaling for 10 minutes, handwriting practice in cursive for 10 minutes, (yes cursive...I believe handwriting is still important), and then they move on to their core subjects. ELA, Math, and Science. They do their electives next, and then we break for lunch. I read history and our group book at this time. They finish the day with guitar practice.

When I get asked about how to homeschool, the answer is "with flexibility". Like I mentioned before, we all learn differently, no one way is better. I do however, keep in line with the public and private schools. My boys want to go to college, and have certain colleges/universities in mind. This means I have to plan accordingly, for what those colleges/universities expect for their applicants, and incoming Freshman.

Research, Research, Research!

I love researching...pretty much anything, (I know, it's weird, but I do), and for me, it's fun to get ideas from other homeschooling parents, and teachers from all over. It really is fun to get new ideas on how to teach literature, history, art, etc. i have found so many inspirations on Pinterest, Twitter, and Instagram. Homeschooling ideas are everywhere!

I am very hands on, and I love real life stories that relate to our studies. I think it makes our studies more tactile and relatable. Therefore, the more ideas I can gather the better the learning experience.

For example, with our family living on a ranch/farm, it gives us so many opportunities to expand our learning. They have learned so much about financial planning, from how we run the ranch. They have learned how politics effects our ranch too, like the EPA, all the way to the IRS. They have learned animal husbandry, and buying and selling of our animals too.

I guess, what I'm trying to say, is everyday life teaches us so much. The key, is to pull from current events, environmental (ie. where you live, for history of agriculture and industry, and even holidays, (for their traditions and cultural, religious, and political history), etc., and relate them to your studies. It's really fun to watch the "light bulbs" go on. Then, your curriculum always stays interesting, challenging, and fun. Not to mention, if your kids have time to ask questions, they are always stretching their level of understanding. I find that I learn something new too. I LOVE THAT!

This is our writing assignment board. The topics include essays, research assignments, poems, etc.

FALL is in the Air at Thistle Hill Ranch

FALL is in the air here at a Thistle Hill Ranch! So many changes to share.

I have been longing for the cool breezes of Fall to hit the South. You know you live in Texas when a cold front is temperatures in the 80's. But...I'll take it!

I woke up this morning to 60* temperatures!

Funny how the whole mood of the ranch changed this morning.

The horses in the front meadow enjoying cool breezes, and not escaping to the trees for shade, the flowers weren't wilting, and even my coffee tasted better.

When a Fall is upon us, the color of the sun has a golden hue that gleams, even on the dry grass, making everything beautiful.

So much to report, so be advised...this will be long!

I know it's been a month or so since I wrote last. Funny how the Summer seemed to linger and then, before I knew it, it was over. I've been busy with farm life, new additions to the farm, getting the boys new curriculum ready, signed up for homeschool activities, and working on a design project.

On homeschooling, the good news is after researching and planning their curriculum, they are both excited. This is ALWAYS a plus! I will share homeschool tidbits soon, in another post.

So, here goes the update...

Welcome Duncan, the farm cat, to Thistle Hill Ranch!

He showed up 3 weeks ago and decided we were his family. He has already brought me a rat in appreciation for our hospitality, and yes, I cleaned it up.

That was a blast!

It really is adorable how all of the animals act as if he's always been a part of the family. He follows the boys while they do their ranch chores, hunts daily in the meadow, and plays with the dogs in the morning and evening. So our vet checked him out, gave him a rabies shot, & a clean bill of health. We couldn't be happier to have him around.

I'm Back to Work Designing

I'm not sure if I mentioned in my previous post, but I have been asked by my sister and brother-in-law, to do the interior and exterior design of my brother-in-laws new Classic Texoma Dealership. He just acquired the Toyota, Nissan, Honda & Used car dealership in Denison, Texas.

I couldn't be more honored!

I have only done two other commercial establishments, since I mostly stick to residential, but was elated at the opportunity to take on such a fun design project. I couldn't wait for the challenge, and can't wait to see all my designs come to fruition. Of course, being able to work with my sister & brother-in-law is a fantastic job perk. Once all the work is complete, I will share before and after photos.

Our New Farm Dog, Baron

We also have a new addition at Thistle Hill Ranch, Baron Horowitz...we hope to someday find him a Baroness! He is a Bouvier des Flandres. We researched what would be a good fit for a farm dog. We needed a BIG dog, that would be a herding dog, guard dog, good with animals, good with kids, and most importantly, good with my allergies/asthma. This task seemed near impossible.

Glen said we needed a Bouvier des Flandres! And I said "we need a what?"

I had never heard of, nor had I ever seen a Bouvier. So I did my own research, only to find out, this really does sound like the perfect fit. After numerous searches, I came across Chantal's Bouviers in Pennsylvania. She is from Belgium, where the breed is from, and is incredibly knowledgable of all aspects of the breed. It just so happened, she had 2 puppies left from her latest litter, ready to home. She sent their pictures, and I knew the minute I saw him, I had to have him!

After: They are prone to moisture in their ears, therefore the ears are cropped to keep them dry, to avoid ear infections. This is seems to be deemed a necessity by most Bouvier breeders, not for vanity. But we didn't have the choice, they were done before we bought him. Chantal has been breeding this breed for many years and highly advices cropping.

Here is a stock picture of a grown Bouvier des Flandres.

They come in colors of Fawn, Black, and Brindle. Baron's sire was a Fawn and Dam a Brindle. Baron, is a Brindle...we just love his snippets of white!

This is him when we brought him home, 4 weeks ago, at 9 weeks.

This was taken 2 weeks ago...I need a new one of the 3 darlings. Getting a picture of these 3, is harder than it looks.

This was a couple days ago with Preston holding him. Preston is 15, and a tad over 5'6. Baron is already almost too big to carry around.

He's only 13 weeks old! He's Humongous...and we just adore his Royal Fluffiness!

Farm Animal Happenings

All the mares are doing well, and baby Koa is looking more like a big boy!

Our 1st Calves will be here in about a month. We are so excited! They are Charolais Angus cross. They will be little grey babies. I hope we catch a glimpse of them being born.

This is a picture of the girls, early in the AM getting ready to be artificially inseminated, last January. Some were bred in March, and some in May. They have a 9 month gestation, like humans, so it's easy to remember. I can't wait to see these calves!

And last but not least...

FALL

FALL is just around the corner and decorating has started! Here is a sneak peek.

I can't wait until the pumpkins come in at Central Market. Then, I'll make the hour and a half drive for the special colors.

And in case you're wondering...Yes, it's worth it!

So for now faux pumpkins it is.

Check back soon for my Fall Decorations post. I start with Halloween, then move to my pilgrims & turkeys for Thanksgiving. Although, a little bird told me the rest of my Fall bins are buried at the back of the barn...this year may have pumpkins only...sigh.

When the Weather Gets HOT, I Redesign!

Well, if I'm perfectly honest, when I get bored, after I'm done deep cleaning and organizing...I redesign. It's not just the HEAT.

I have been going from closet to closet, drawer to drawer, reorganizing and purging. Yesterday, I finished load after load of laundry, and started looking around our living room...that's never good.

My husband says he can never go blind, because I change the house too much!

The next thing, I knew, I had every surface emptied and was dusting and redesigning.

My boys just started laughing..."There you go again Mom! You can never just rest!".

This may be a true statement, but at least I enjoy redesign and our spaces never get old and boring.

I moved the chalkboard from the kitchen, (that had the pig on it), erased the pig, and put a "Thistle Hill Ranch" banner on it. I also moved the calf head from the kitchen here. I think you notice it more here. I needed more light "visually", so this works better for me, with the white table cloth.

Not sure why this is so darn blurry...oh well, you get the idea.

I can't find before pictures of the kitchen...typical...I always forget before pictures.

I like the change...the boys said it feels bigger. The lighting was terrible for photos, but again, I think you can get a feel for the space...I really shy away from color, but I love this scarf, and the colors, I couldn't resist putting it here.

I put the table runner, I normally have in the dining room, here to cover the glass.

It warmed it up, and lightened the room. It literally looked brighter...love that! Below, I placed our napkins in a metal basket with a mouse paper weight. This is also where the chalkboard used to be. I put the mirror from above the chest here to reflect more light.

I like the peanut jars here much better. This was blurry too...I think it was the sunlight...ugh!

This is where the mirror over the sideboard came from. And this is the mirror from the dining room...I think it looks much better here. It also made the room seem taller. I brought back the lamp, from another room, (the family that owned this property actually gave its lamp to me. I adore it!), and put it back here at our back door. It's nice at night too...so pretty.

And last but not least...

I moved the knick knacks off of the living room ottoman tray and started over.

I will take more pictures of the living room for another post. I put slipcovers back on the chairs, and redesigned the bookcase for all books. I needed more space in the big bookcase for homeschooling. I Can't Believe Summer is almost over! Where did the time go.

So much more to do before school starts. And we have a new ranch puppy coming Wednesday! We are so excited! Lots and lots to come, so check back soon.

Remember, you can always use what you already have, to get a whole new feel to your home. The use non-traditional items in a new way is always a fun, easy, and inexpensive cure, to the "I'm bored with my space" disease.

The best way to get a new feel is empty the space and shop your home. It really can be a lot of fun, and your room gets really clean too :-) It makes you get all those pesky dust bunnies.

It's a HOT Summer at Thistle Hill Ranch!

I love the idea of living in the South!

Southern living, sounds like porch swings, nice weather, ice tea sipping on porches, and long lovely summer days.

Then....

SUMMER HITS!

And I feel like Bonnie..."Nooooooo, not 100*+ Heat and Heat Index! I can't take it!"

The heat is almost unbareable!

I try to make myself get up early to enjoy the 80* weather... Yes, I said 80 DEGREES in the EARLY morning! Can you say YUK? I like 80's but not at 7 AM. I know some people Love this weather. I personally would love a high of 80.

I try my hardest to think FALL, late October, will be here soon!

I've learned to think of Summer as project time. Get everything that I need to get accomplished before Fall & Winter weather hits, finished over the summer.

So what do I do over Summer?

1. Clean and Organize

This includes closets, drawers, under "things" (ie. deep dusting and cleaning), & purge, purge, purge!

2. Get Organized for the Upcoming School Year

The older they get, the more planning that's involved with school curriculums, electives, and extracurricular activities. I'm a Nervous Nelly, Worry Wart, whatever you want to call me...I get stressed about making sure all the i's are dotted, and t's are crossed, where their education is concerned. They both have very different goals, and that takes planning.

3. Get Ranch Clean-Up Done, & Ranch Projects Planned

Because "ranching" is still so new to us, there is a lot I'm still learning. There is also a lot to plan. We now know that we NEED a new barn, we NEED an arena and a round pen, and we NEED to get going on the new house. Now, that the current home we are in, is all ready...new dish washer, new washing machine,new toilets, new tile in the master bathroom...well, new subfloor and tile replaced, house painted, old shrubs taken out, trees trimmed, deck fixed and repainted, kitchen sink re-reinforced....

WOW, that IS a lot!

It's time now to get started on the new Farmhouse!

It's a long road from plans, to breaking ground. With a husband whose super busy with work, and ME, with an A Type personality that wants to get things done, this is a frustratingly long road. The biggest struggle is I can't help get the house started. I have to be patient. Patience for me, is a learned behavior...I'm still learning....deep breath. Everything happens for a reason.

The house will get done when it's meant to get done.

I enjoy being outside a lot. But in the spirit of not melting, I'm embracing Inside Summer Project Time, and Early Morning Outside Project Time. I'm enjoying my kids, and enjoying my animals even if it is only in short spurts in the AM and PM!

All the horses came up to the house around lunch time.

I had to say a quick hi and get in a few hugs around their necks.

The House Update is Finished!

It's SO Relaxing! Funny how a color change, can change the whole mood.

We were hoping for a Southern Cottage feel to the house. I think we got it! It feels fresh, clean, and cozy. Now the house blends in with the rest of the property.

We were also really happy with the side effects of painting it a light color...the brick is cooler and so is the house. The back patio/deck is cooler too.

Now on to the next project...getting the new house built!

Thistle Hill Ranch Improvements Coming Soon!

The House Update is Almost DONE!

I can't wait to share the new look of the Thistle Hill Ranch's house!

We wanted it to look like a southern country home. It's not technically small enough to be called a cottage, but we wanted a "cottage" look. This is the first home/ building you see, when you enter our ranch. We wanted continuity with all the buildings, that way when we build the new home, it will all flow as if everything was built about the same time.

Check Back on Monday. The renovation should be complete Sunday. I'm really excited!

Summer Projects at Thistle Hill Ranch

Our first year at the Thistle Hill Ranch has just passed. It's been an amazing year here. There's so much we've accomplished, and so many projects we've finished. I'm so happy we made the desicion to move here, even though we've had so much to learn, in a short amount of time. My Grandpa used to say, "If you Love the Place, It Doesn't Feel Like Work"!

The before and after of the property is shocking!

Here are a few before and after photos...

The House~

I love this little '80's ranch home, but being on "the ranch", it doesn't quite fit in with the overall plan we have for Thistle Hill.

The plan is to have this home, and the new home blend. Not to mention, all of the out buildings too.

Let's Start With the House...

The brick, and black shutters, (shutters on the large window also, not being quite to scale), give a colonial feel to the home.

Here are some before pictures of the house.

{Side Note:My Father-in-law helped us with tree trimming, fan installations and shutter removal and building new ones! Poor guy came for a visit and we put him to work!}

I couldn't get over all the mud robber nests behind the shutters...YUK!

We capped the black turned posts with cedar. We will clear coat them to protect them from the elements, but keep the color.

You can see a glimpse of the new shutters.

You will also notice in the before picture the large bushes in the right front corner, are . It really made the house seem larger.

Our new umbrella on the back patio, to cut out the intense sun and heat. The patio deck will be getting a paint makeover too.

The painting of the brick, shutters, door, and deck start tomorrow...if it doesn't rain. It's like Christmas! I'm so excited!

The Pond~

This was the pond last year. Overgrown plants draining the water, an old dock, and a several year drought, took its toll on this 1/4 acre pond.

What a difference a year makes!

Look at the fence line in comparison. The water is almost to the top!

We have plans for a small dock, and fishing shack for fishing tack, and a little more shade. Maybe in a year...

The Barn & Corral~

It was full of snakes, and bunnies!

Recently, as of a week ago, barn fans installed!

Don't judge the mess, HA! This is also part of our storage until the house is built.

The end result...Sandy & Baby Koa enjoying the breeze!

I sure loved seeing the new barn sign in the winter too...Goose Bumps!

Next was Tree Trimmming...

We now understand, that this ranch chore is never really finished.

The picture below is showing the overgrown juniper bush, ivy, and other bushes. From what we could see, it had railroad ties on one side. We later discovered, they were all the way around.

Three hours later, all 4 of us, a tractor and a chainsaw later, it was all gone! Glad the boys are old enough to help...it sure went by fast with them.

Inside Our Home~

Not the greatest lighting in the pictures, but it's a peek inside.

If you follow me, you know I'm compelled to change in my decor. So this is the latest change. I moved the shedding plant to my patio. I was tired of cleaning up leaves. You can catch a glimpse of the before, in the above photo.

Not a fan of ceiling fans, but it's staying. Notice the printer in the corner, that's on my desk/ side table. We were really pleased at the size of this master bedroom. It's very comfortable and has an ensuite bathroom.

So what's next?

There is just so much on the list! New house, arena, and barn to build. Not necessarily in that order, but that is on the top 5 of the triage list. We just keep plugging away!

The Summer includes homeschooling a bit this summer with Math, and workbooks to keep their minds going. Horseback riding lessons continued, and fishing, fishing, fishing.

Unique Passion or is it a DNA Memory?

Have you ever gone antique shopping, collected certain items, or wanted to learn a language and wondered why you really like these things, when it really has nothing to do with anything, except that you like it?

My sister collected lighthouses, in the form of miniatures, art, etc., She never knew why she liked them so much...she just did!

We both have always LOVED the East Coast, and fell in love with Massachusetts. The history, the lush green countryside, the historic homes, on and on. I have always loved the coastal style of home, decor, etc.

Three or four years ago, {I've lost track now}, we started our Family History Journey. I know I'm probably being redundant, as I have shared a lot of this already; but, I still feel the need to share and put an all important question out there..

Could it be possible, that your DNA has a memory?

We all have passions, likes/dislikes, hobbies, or even extreme fascinations with certain cultures. But have you ever wondered if it's something deeper than, "it just interests me"?

The reason I ask this, is because through this journey of researching our family history, many "isn't that weird?" moments kept happening. At some point you start to think maybe this is more than coincidence.

Let me explain...

I'm 41 now, and when I was 24 and living in Honolulu, Hawaii for a short time, to be near my Dad and his family, I was working in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. One of my coworkers suggested that while on my lunch break, I stop by the psychic fair and get a "reading". I was single, and wanted to find out why, at that point in my life, I was still having trouble finding "The One"!

What else does a 20'something single girl ask a "psychic", Ha!

So...why not!

She was a young late 20-something "psychic", and I asked her the above question.

Her response was this...

"This is interesting...I see a very large ship, with large sails, like from a long long time ago. I see you. You have 3 children. Something happened and your husband died, and left you with the 3 children. Until you get over the loss of him, you won't be able to move on and find your true love."

I walked away thinking that was the most random and bizarre "reading" and made absolutely no sense!

Fast forward 14 or so years later, and Heather and I discover in our research that our Great Grandmothers Grandfather was a whaling captain in Honolulu. That was shocking enough, then I found this...

Notice the last obituary...

At this point, we find out it took over 6 months for our 3rd Great Grandmother to find out her husband died. We just felt sad. Then, later that evening, I kept rereading the obituary in my head.

Then, it HIT ME!

"Leaves a wife and three children to mourn his loss."

All of a sudden I remembered that "random" psychic reading, that didn't seem so random anymore!

Then, we find out he was from Lowell Massachusetts, his best friend married our 3rd Great Grandmother, and he was also a whaling captain, and in his retirement he was a lighthouse keeper in Honolulu.

Are you kidding me!

So now, the lighthouses, affinity for anything Nantucket, nautical, etc, all of a sudden makes scary sense to both my sister and me!

I bought this print below,10 years ago. I found it in a thrift store, and had to have it!

Turns out it's the Charles W. Morgan in Mystic, Connecticut, which was an American whaling ship.

Another, "Holy WOW", moment when I looked at this print with new eyes, after our research.

I put my questions about the elusive Dennis (Denis) Kelly on a whaling online forum. And in a twist of fate, a friend of a relative, saw the post and recognized the story. She told our cousin, who lives in Californina, and she got in touch with me! In another twist of fate her son was living in Texas too! The next thing I know, she comes for a visit!

This is all of us together last week, here at Thistle Hill Ranch!

Her boyfriend, her in the middle next to me, her daughter in-law and son Kelly...notice the name Kelly? Yes, it's from Dennis Kelly.

I somehow know our relatives that have passed on made this happen! It was the most amazing 3 hours. I felt like I had known them my whole life. So comfortable and so much fun!

I know people casually say they believe in fate, or that their loved ones are still with them, and you casually agree.

But, if you really think about it, do you ever wonder about those "loved ones" you've never met? What if they love us, and know us; yet we've never met? What if they want us to know them so badly, they latch on to our passions, and push us in directions to find them, know them, and love them too?

I think so often when we research our family tree, it's just a bunch of names and dates. Never any stories, never any pictures, never a "real" person. So how could you possibly get a real picture of who they were?

Watch any show like "Who do you think you are?", or "Genealogy Roadshow", and see their individual journeys. It all seems to start out the same way...looking for a name, date, and some more information. Then, you hear, stories like Brook Shields, finding out she had history in France, as in royalty. She mentioned she wanted to learn French, had traveled to France, loved everything French, and never knew she had a genealogical history in France!

There are many stories like this!

I have loved our journey immensely. NOTHING is a coincidence anymore, I look at everything differently now.

My sister Heather brought this question to mind... {and forgive me Heather if I've chopped up your idea, but I think this is pretty close!}

~What if we don't just pass down eye color, hair color, and health. What if we pass down memories? What if we pass down passions or fears?

For example, when were afraid of certain things, for no reason at all! No previous experiences with that fear, we are just afraid!

I know... It really makes you think!

Ironically, several years after she proposed this idea, a study came out about this exact thing a year ago.

So the next time someone asks you why you started a certain hobby, collection, or career choice, stop and think. It could be genetic! Your 4th Great Grandfather may have been an architect, whaler, scientist, lighthouse captain, artist etc.

It may not be as random a career choice or passion as you think.

Summer is Almost Here at Thistle Hill Ranch!

I can't believe it's taken me so long to post on my Blog!

Rushing to finish up with school so they don't go to far into June, rains putting a damper on every ranch duty, {Pun Intended}, and technical difficulties.

I had issues with storage on my phone, uploaded photos to my laptop and apparently didn't know that would delete them from my blog! Who knew???? I have no clue how to correct the issue, so if you see random missing photos in previous blog posts, well...now you know why! So bizarre. Sometimes I hate technology, and my lack of knowledge in the field. UGH!

Moving on...

Our Homeschool year 2014-15 is coming to a long close! This has been the LONGEST year Evvvvveeeeer!

We learned we do not like the math program we chose for this year...it's not enough practice, (so we supplemented), yet, too many lessons for a normal school year, so Double YUK! You live and you learn, and thank god for a knowledgable tutor.

We finished the entire book of Mythology, that covered Greek, Roman, and Norse gods, "Mythology", by Edith Hamilton. We loved learning all the gods and goddesses, for me it was a slight repeat of a High School; although, I'm pretty sure we didn't read the WHOLE book. We read this while learning Ancient History, Greek, and Roman History at the same time. I found that the boys were coming to me bringing examples of Greek and Roman influences in society, architecture, art, and even modern advertisements.

We had a very busy year of homeschooling and ranching, but somehow we managed it. While coming to a close in our school year, I stumbled on an ad for music lessons. They are an amazing family, that I'm lucky enough to get to visit with, while the dad/husband teaches my boys guitar.

They live in an amazing home that they've built all on their own. They keep telling me all they want to do with it, and looking around you see it is technically in various stages of renovation or construction. Yet to me, it's perfect! It's so welcoming and cpmfortable. It could be the beautiful spirit of the family. I feel very lucky to have stumbled on them to teach my boys. The boys feel lucky too!

This is the head of the family, Mr. Grubb, who has made guitar so much fun, that the boys practice without reminders. Thanks to Mr. Grubb, we may have campfire songs after all.

Back to ranching!

The prep/clean-up for Summer begins!

And here we are in FULL Thistle Hill Ranch Bloom! Purple Thistles Galore!

The rain in our area has been relentless, as I'm sure most of you have heard...Texas is a swamp!

The rain has held us back from a lot of ranch duties. This just means twice the amount of work, which means I stress out and freak out!

Last week, we had a few hours to get up the temporary fencing of chicken wire, to start training the ducks and geese to swim and come back to the coop.

Guess who did the fencing? Oh My GOSH...it was ME! I swore I would never put my pinky toenail in water I couldn't see my toe in...well, I guess sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

My hair went into a bun, and into the pond I went! I won't lie, it was so slimy and disgusting. Not to mention, any person who has ever watched the movie "Lonesome Dove", has that fear of going in any Texas water after a rain..."WATER MOCCASIN!" Is all I could hear in my head for the first few minutes.

But, I got the job done and the ducks and geese LOVE it!

For those of you that don't already know, we call our weekend the days my husband has off. He's off Wednesday and Thursday. So today being Wednesday, it's the beginning of our weekend. We finally have some sunshine, and at 6AM, we got up and got the day going before the storms roll in this afternoon.

First we dropped off Momma Sandy and baby at our vets for Sandy to be bred. Hopefully if all goes well, we'll get her at the end of the week. Her buddies Bailey and Classy had a hard time watching her leave. It was so sad...

Baby Koa wanted to be right by Mom, and Momma Sandy was happy to be able to see his face.

Then we returned to inspect fences after the storm and get started on projects.

Here is a picture of our normally dry creek bed overflowing this week, and moving water into the real creek.

When the rain receded, we discovered rock formations that have been revealed after all the dirt and sedement has washed away. The creek looks new to me again, almost unrecognizable.

Wildflowers are everywhere...I never tire of them!

Finding critter prints along the creek makes me smile. So much we don't see, that's happening here at the ranch.

While finishing things at the barn, Daisy called to us to let her in the back pasture with her girls. I guess she was ready to be a Nanny again to her girls, after a two week vacation with the horses in the front pasture.

Today the main focus was on Duck Mahal. It was so disgusting, I had a hard time even standing by it! "Gagging"!

But, luckily my guys helped out and we got it all done! Hopefully we'll get some nice days next week, so I can get my shelves up and the outside plantings around the duck coop finished.

Have I mentioned how much I hate pending projects?

HAAAATE Them!

But....I wait!

Luckily today we have a little sunshine before the afternoon storms. But the clouds are already closing in.

Below is what I call the Hobbit Tree. The previous owners stacked fence posts around the base of the tree, and I won't let anyone move them. They make the tree look like something in the Shire.

But, hard work and rummaging in ponds and around the woods does have it's dangers. I'm not afraid of bugs, but there is something about them in my hair that makes squeal like I'm 5!

I was so itchy and shaky after pulling it out of my scalp, I couldn't even take a good picture!

So, off to the Doctor I go. This was a week ago, but a few "iffy" symptoms warrant a check. So pray it's not Lyme. So gross, so gross, so gross!

Preston got it last Summer, and after antibiotics is Lyme free. Hats, Deep Woods Off spray, and you can still get critters on ya! So always check yourself and loved ones...have I mentioned it itches and it's gross? What do you do? Check for ticks and if you get one get checked out.

Lots to do, but somehow it never gets old and we always love the rewards! Thistle Hill Ranch is a true example of a labor of love.

Do what you love, love what you do, and SNAP the jobs a game...wait...I'm pretty sure I mixed Mary Poppins and Confucious, LOL!

Thistle Hill Ranch or Swamp?

We have been inundated with rain! Texas has been in a horrible drought for years. Our part of the state is finally relieved of drought conditions! But, unfortunately now it feels as if we should build an ark.

I thought it was April showers brings May flowers?

This is a dry creek bed, for overflow, funneling into the Spring fed creek. Both are running like crazy!

I know the rain is always welcome here, but I have been desperately missing my walks around the ranch. If I want to take a walk, it now requires gallons of Deep Woods Off and rubber boots.

A little less than pleasant!

I did however, manage to snap some pictures of our busy couple of weeks. So I apologize for the delay in posts.

I guess when life happens, sometimes you have no choice but to just keep going!

Today I finally have time to share the last couple weeks in pictures!

First, our poor little duck with a bum leg, needed to be looked at. Our poor "Limpy"! Luckily, the vet said he has already learned to live without. So he's back with his friends and happy!

We call our place "Thistle Hill Ranch", & this is why. Beautiful purple thistles on the hillside. The rain knocked them over, but they sure do brighten a rainy day.

Daisy looks so small in the waves of rye grass. The rains have the grass growing by leaps and bounds. I feel like I live in the English countryside, with everything so lush and green.

This was the last "boyfriend in a box" for our mares, that I had to pick up. Now we cross our fingers and toes, say a prayer, and hope the last two mares are finally pregnant. I will let you know the good news as I get it!

My Mother's Day gift from my boys! I have always wanted an antique scale. This one is actually from an old grocery store in our town. It makes it even more special!

This is from today..darling new baby birds in another one of our bird houses. I just love opening them to peek inside...it's like a present!

When you live on a ranch, there are beautiful things to look at, fun things to do, and a lot of HARD work!

One of the reasons I wanted to move to the country, was to show the boys what hard work really is. Funny thing about hard work...it grows on you!

They never complain, they just DO!

They know they have to finish school work and chores before they can "play". I've noticed they seem to understand now, how hard work goes hand and hand with good character and success. Now they ask me what more they can help with!

I KNOW!... WHO KNEW?

This is Preston vacuuming the house. This is one of his everyday chores...did I mention that living on a ranch is messy?

This is last Wednesday...Stripping stalls is really hard work, and kinda yucky..let's be honest..it's GROSS! But, it has to be done!

And...creatures large and small appreciate your hard work, even if they don't say it. The key is to not look for approval from others, but to be satisfied in your work.

Our Baby Koa is growing like a weed! He is always curious and always wants to know what I'm up to. I could just eat him up he's so darn cute...although, I know I'm slightly prejudice.

And we have an announcement! Drum Roll Please!......................

The Boys Are in 4H!

I told you, we've been busy!

We are so excited! They went to their 1st meeting a month ago and the connection with the other kids was amazing! They were immediately welcomed into the greatest group of kids. This is what every parent hopes for. The parents of this group of kids are just as amazing. God has a way of leading you in directions and putting you exactly where you were meant to be. This wonderful Cooke County 4H group was such a gift. Wonderful parents, wonderful kids, and the opportunities for the boys are limitless. We can't wait!

Hopefully next week I will have more fun pictures to share! Still working on getting Duck Ma Hal the way I want it...farm animals not helping the cause...ugh! Wish me luck!

More rain is expected, but luckily we are on a slight hill. Hopefully I will have more pictures to share sooner than later.

Homeschooling at Thistle Hill Ranch

I often get asked, " How do you do it all?"

The quick answer is, I don't!

This view in our back pasture, makes all the hardwork worth it! This will be our view in the next year or so, out our new house windows. Hard to be patient, but fun to look forward to!

If there is anything I've learned from my crazy upbringing, it was to just keep going, never give up, and you'll never know the answer to life's questions, unless you TRY!

So, the first all important rule I set for our family, is ORGANIZATION!

Organization is a MUST, with our home, ranch, and homeschooling. If you aren't organized, life that becomes, or already is chaotic, gets more chaotic and stressful!

When I talk about organization, I mean EVERYTHING!

So how do I stay organized? It takes work, but less work in the long run, than if I wasn't.

Here are a Few Examples:

1. When I get up in the morning, after getting dressed, I make a run through the house gathering laundry, & hand towels (every 2 days; because, let's face it, they get gross!), and start a load in the washer. The boys are getting up by this point, making their beds, getting dressed, and doing their morning chores.

~ The boys have individual, and together chores. These include: vacuuming (the entryway, back door area, which includes kitchen dining room, and laundry room...it's very dusty/dirty on a farm), doing dishes, (unload and load morning dishes), feeding dogs and letting them out, feeding the cat, and changing all animals waters. Then, they move on to the ducks and geese coop, and then the barn for the horses. This is watering, feeding, & cleaning their stalls.

2. While the boys are completing their morning chores, I am doing various housework, (dusting, making my bed, folding laundry, and prepping any school lessons.

3. While the boys are doing their first 3 lessons on their own, I blog, mop, return emails, go through my calendar for upcoming Dr. visits, Veterinarian visits, grocery shopping, going through mail and filing receipts and other documents.

{I know that seems like a lot, and it is, but some of these things are daily, others not. So it stays fairly even keel...not too overwhelming.}

4. I plan their curriculum, pretty much to the letter, over the summer. Therefore, over the school year, I only have to adjust the curriculum on an "as needed" basis. This is part of the "being organized". This life we lead now is crazy busy, ( isn't everybody's?), and the way to stay sane is stay organized.

5. Day before yesterday, after homeschooling, I cleaned my bathroom from top to bottom, all drawers, baskets, (dumped old medications, lotions, etc.), wiped down all the drawers.

Then, I moved on to my dresser drawers and closet. I do this twice a year. I move out the seasonal clothes and get rid of anything that is worn out or needs to be donated. This helps me keep my closet and drawers organized and current.

6. I clean out my fridge about every other week, to get rid of any forgotten leftovers, or expired foods. This helps me keep on top of grocery shopping too. Everything shopping need, is an event in the country. My favorite grocery store 25 minutes away. The boys haircuts, Target, Best Buy, ie. major shopping, is 30 minutes away. To maximize my trips, I plan haircuts, gift shopping, etc. and hit those places first and then grocery shop on the way home. This helps my weeks go by more smoothly. We have a great meat market and small grocer in town for emergencies or just quick meal needs too.

So what does ALL of this have to do with homeschooling on the ranch?

If I didn't have the rest of our daily lives organized, homeschooling would be a joke! I have my oldest getting closer and closer to being college bound. Planning a students credits for college, takes dedication and LOTS of careful planning. The extra curricular activities carrying into school credits, (labs, leadership in the community, community service, etc., etc., etc.), can be quite overwhelming.

This planning scares me to death! I won't lie...

But, if you stay focused, keep up on your daily life needs and chores, then everything else falls into place. Keep yourself surrounded with supportive, like minded people, and keep on keeping on!

Some people say I'm "overly organized", even OCD; but, I look at it as my safety net. I thrive in a clean, tidy, organized environment. Right down to fresh cut flowers in almost every room. {I pick wildflowers, cut trimmings from bushes, anything to bring the outside in and freshen/brighten my home.} It makes me happy, it makes me take a deep relaxing breath, and my family loves it too.

I bought this 2 months ago, and it's doing well, the trick is 2 ice cubes every other week!

Fresh picked pansies. They actually produce more blooms, the more you pick. And an aloe plant has always been a must! They heal cuts and scrapes FAST!

When people tell me they don't care if their home is untidy, I sometimes wonder if that's really true, or if it is really because they don't know where to start?

Hopefully if you're that person, that doesn't know where to start, I have helped in some way show, it IS possible to do it all. My boys are older and they help tremendously. But, when they were little, I did their "now" chores. I just got up earlier or stayed up later. But, either way, it got done.

Homeschooling is easy when you PLAN!

Plan your curriculum around your life's time. Everyone has a different life, therefore, different life's time.

Our math and science is taught by online and CD tutors. Geography is something I started with them, and then, they continued on their own. I made out flash cards for every country, with their capital on the back, and organized them by continent. They have to copy them into a notebook, by continent and include their government, and top resources. Amazing what they are learning and researching on their own with this project. It is fun to here them mention the countries outside of school time.

This allows me "free time" to get all my stuff done. I'm here, so if there are any questions, I'm here to help. And as I mentioned before, we have a math tutor that comes once a week to help with any gaps.

Then, we have time after lunch, for the rest of school. Literature, is my favorite subject! I love all the literature we are finishing together. Papers they are writing, and exposure to history through literature too. I add in poetry, reading from an American Anthology book, and even Emily Post's Etiquette. They hate etiquette, but funny how several things from our lessons they have already needed! Not so dumb now!

This is our living room ottoman, where I'm usually parked, writing, planning, reading, and occasionally folding laundry here, instead of on the dining room table. Always with a coffee, or 2 tea bags and a dash of cream, or the occassional evening wine glass.

I hope I have helped give a glimpse of what our real life is like. It's definitely not for everyone, but it is something we love. We love the time as a family that is definitely fleeting. We also appreciate every moment we have on the ranch. We know they are growing fast, and homeschooling is just one more way to help them grow into strong, respectful, well educated young men, through hard work and lots of love.

Thistle Hill Ranch in April

Spring is a beautiful time of year here at Thistle Hill Ranch!

A year has almost come and gone for us at Thistle Hill Ranch, and I am struggling to find a favorite time of year.

There are times I feel overwhelmed with ALL the ranch chores, but then one of our darling animals reminds me life is too short to sweat the small stuff?

Thank you Daisy, (the donkey), for keeping me laughing!

Ranch Happenings

A lot of exciting things are happening here. We just joined 4H in our area and can't wait to jump in with both feet. Everyone was so nice and so welcoming. Thanks to our leader Katy Smith, we are ready for all the fun 4H has to offer. We can't wait to see where it takes us in our studies and socially. It's about time the boys get out with more kids. It has taken some time, but we finally feel settled. We love our community and all the wonderful people who have helped us call Texoma home.

We took our Spring Break and Easter Break back to back, so we didn't miss any school.Our homeschool week consists of Friday-Tuesday & Wednesday/Thursday is our weekend. We have been getting up earlier to get school done early in the day, to not overwhelm ourselves with the rest of the ranch duties. It doesn't always go as planned...and for a Type-A personality like me, sometimes it drives me nuts!

The last two weeks, has consisted of preparing our heifers for rebreeding, breeding & checking our mares for pregnancy, and rebreeding, one of them again.

This last week and this week, has consisted of all of the above, and all the regular chores. Keeping up has been difficult at times.

We had the boys friends up this last week too, and they had a blast! Always nice to have friends that are willing to travel the hour+ drive, to hang out for the day. And the Biggs girls, that now live in beautiful Tennessee, stopped in too. What a treat that day was. It was good for me to take a break, & hang out with my friends too :-)

The ducks and the geese finally moved into the "Duck Mahal" 3 nights ago.

{I guess instead of "Duck Mahal", I should name it "Fowl Mahal", we do have geese in there too after all.}

We still have a few things to finish up, so pictures will come soon. But, here's a sneak peek!

Yesterday, I met with our vet in the morning to check Classy for rebreeding, went to Home Depot to score the $3 Knock Out Rose bushes, and splurged a bit on the yellow rose topiaries for the front of "Fowl Mahal", then on the way home picked up groceries for dinner. I managed to plant the rose bushes around the "Fowl Mahal", with the boys before the torrential downpour. Then, a quick shower, and finished 9 loads of laundry. It was sheets day, and add that it's been raining and it's muddy...this equals more laundry. We finished our lessons right before 6pm ,and I managed to still put dinner in the oven.

Then, I poured myself some wine!

Back to the Fun Stuff!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE our new daybed swing! Thanks to my awesome husband Glen, for helping me in all my "What if we did..." list!

I can't wait to have more time to read and rest on it!

Hopefully the weather cooperates, and we will get "Fowl Mahal" completely finished and get pictures up of the whole pond area. It really is looking neat.

Spring Has Sprung!

Happy 1st Day of SPRING!

Even though it has been rainy and cloudy here at Thistle Hill Ranch, everything is turning green, wildflowers are popping up, the creek is filling up, and the birds are nesting. It puts me in the mood to plant, clean, and refresh inside and out!

We have been doing project after project here, getting a lot accomplished. Soon there will be pictures of the pond and fire pit area. We have been working hard to spruce it up and get it ready for Spring and Summer nights by the pond.

We bought 8 ducks for our pond and geese are soon to come. They are just too cute for words!

We have a duck and goose house coming too! Lots and lots happening, so check back soon.

Learning to Live!

If I say the word "OVERWHELMED", I think some of you reading this will feel me!

I think Mr Darby feels it too!

These last couple weeks have flown by and have been overwhelming. It has been filled with homeschooling, ranching, cleaning, and on, and on!

They have a writing research assignment I gave them, that they are less than enthusiastic about...can you say "kill me now"?

When they resist or fuss about my writing assignments, it drives me bananas. I wish they would just research and write! But then again, I have to remind myself not everyone sees writing as an easy thing. I loved essay and writing assignments because they came easily to me. When I say write a paragraph a day, you'd think I was asking them to climb Mt. Everest...really?

Thank God for our Math tutor giving me a break once a week!

Ranching, Ranching, Ranching!

We have been on baby watch since February 28th...she's still pregnant!

The gal we bought her from can't seem to remember when she artificially inseminated her...and so it goes.

So by our estimation, the earliest due date would be the 28th of February, and the latest being the 10th of March. Our vet said they can go over by as much as 10 days..so, we finally see signs we may be a couple days away from her foaling. The wait is killing me! I'm so excited and yet, at the same time, I'm SO OVER watching her teats for signs of waxing. Waxing, (which is colostrum leaking), usually means foaling will commence within 24-48 hours.

Then, we also artificially inseminated our last 3 heifers again. We will check them in another couple weeks to see if it took, and if the other 2 are still pregnant. This process as I've reiterated before, is a 4 step process from beginning to end. A tad tedious, but the benefits are great...babies this Fall!

We have been trimming trees and cut down dead ones. Regrading the road and planning for more road base...it got very muddy around here.

The boys and I have been anxiously waiting for the Spring fish crop to come in for restocking our pond. We bought fish from a local pond and fish shop to stock our pond with blue gill, catfish, and minnows. As you can see, it was raining like crazy. But rain or shine, we were going!

We can't wait to fish in the Fall, when they are grown.

We also went to the architect...I think I mentioned that in a previous post. Anyway, still waiting to hear back for the plans and any additional adjustments will be made over two more meetings. I'm going crazy waiting to hear something. We were supposed to hear back last week.

Have I mentioned I'm not good at patience?

Add to all of the previous: Researching for next years curriculum, and electives, additions to our ranch soon to be here (chickens, ducks and geese), preparing our other 2 mares for breeding, and regular ranch maintenance and organizing...oh and regular chores of cleaning and cooking...I need a break!

I see some of these moms, with more than 2 kids, tons of outside activities, and I really wonder how they do it? I barely have time for laundry and teaching. Teaching comes first, then house chores, which thank god the boys help with, and then all the ranch planning and upkeep. I'm still loving it all and not sick of it...But, because of my "want it done yesterday" personality, I have trouble giving myself a break.

So this last week we did Math, Science, and Writing, and then winged it the rest of the day. Preston also took the SAT yesterday at Austin College in Sherman.

Just for the practice and experience...don't panic...I'm not expecting my 8th grader to go to college just yet. I'm just glad Duke University supports giving gifted kids opportunities and ideas of how to keep them challenged.

The challenge this week, is for me to simmer down.

I have my Dad and step mom visiting soon from the Hawaiian islands. I have stuff I wanted to finish on my list before they came. I guess this may not happen. The idea of moving out here to the country, was to get all of us to stop and smell the roses...relax...enjoy life. Everyone else is there except me!

My theory is that most moms never get there. I think as Moms we are always working on "To-Do" lists. House To-Do's, Kid To-do's, Help Hubby get his To-Do's done etc., etc. etc.

I need to learn how to relax. My problem is I don't relax, I collapse.

Yesterday, I woke up on the sofa, with 2 dogs laying on me, and one side of my face numb from laying on it for so long. The plan was to sit and watch a show for 30 minutes. I guess after a VERY long week...I collapsed. Then, got back to laundry, cleaning, and cooking dinner.

But, in the end I took a stroll to the pond to take in the sunset last night. For a few minutes I relaxed.

So I guess the lesson is, if you collapse or relax for a few minutes watching a sunset, try to remember nobody's grave ever reads, "Here lies ...., and her closet was always organized and house always clean!"

We need to learn how to LIVE!

The happy light in this last, crazy, week, was a visit to see family and from family.

We visited my sister and my sweet niece and nephew "in town" while they were on their Spring Break. It was a blast!

A day of target shooting, picnicking, and antique shopping. It seriously was one of the best couple of days we've had in a long time.

Family always makes life sweeter!

Oh How I Adore Snow!

It could be the memories of living in Colorado and Montana, my sister & friends, and my futile attempts at building igloos, snow tunnels, and even the perfect snowman. We always had fun trying, and it didn't matter if we could feel our toes, or fingers anymore, we always kept going.

There was always the promise of a warm fire, hot cocoa, or clean warm socks...funny what you remember!

Now I'm a Mom, and somehow that kid in me still enjoys all the above on a winter day.

Getting snow in Texas is a luxury. Ice is more like it. But this last week, we got both. The metroplex and beyond was is in various states of a stand still for almost a week.

Last week, we finally received beautiful powdery snow!

Thistle Hill Ranch Going-On's Before the Big Snow!

Sandy...

Ummm, not that Sandy!

Sandy our mare...Although, I do sing Grease songs to her.

She's due anytime now. As you can see from her shadow, she's HUGE!

We had the ferrier come out to do all of the mares feet, including her. This was her first time, since we've owned her, that she had her feet done without a shot to relax her. She was a total FREAK! She would get, what I call crazy eyes, and kick. She almost kicked our horse vets arm out of her socket...sigh!

So we started giving her a combo tranquilizer that relaxed her enough to do her feet, but not too much, so she was cognizant of the whole experience. This way the ferrier could earn her trust and help her realize, we are just trying to help her.

Danny, our ferrier, is so fantastic that she finally feels safe and trusts him. It went SO well! She sat very still and lifted each foot without even a flinch. Sweet Momma!

A Mommy-to-be Spa Day!

We also had our heifers checked for pregnancy. Two of the 5 are pregnant! Round two is sometime in the next couple weeks, weather permitting, to try for the other 3 girls.

The vet gives them a sonogram. My boys got to see the little calves heart beats!

Then, we had to get the stalls cleaned out, and reworked for drainage. With Sandy due anytime, we needed to have the stalls VERY clean!

Can you say back breaking work? I am still hurting, and it's been almost a week...it could be I'm just getting old...either way...UGH!

This is after we got down a layer of road base raked in and then fresh sand.

Glen used the tractor for some, and the rest was raking, shoveling, shoveling, and raking! WOW! But after all of that the water finally goes where it is supposed to, and out of the stalls.

We put back all the dividers, put down fresh shavings, and there were 3 very happy mares!

Finally!

Here is a little tid bit from the house...

I found this great letter plaque at Hobby Lobby 60% off and had to have it. It reminded me of my typewriter letters. So above the desk it is!

So just about the time I get this house the way I want it, we will be building and moving into the new house....oh well! That's the fun of decorating, there's always something that needs to be decorated!

First Time Ranchers = Lot's of Firsts

Our lives have changed drastically in one year! There are so many firsts for us this year year.

1. Things You Never Thought You'd Text:

How to use a tractor. Luckily I have my husband to teach me, and here he is spreading the new road base.

3. How to Breed Cattle and Horses & How to assist in calving and foaling:

We have had to read, ask questions, & take notes on what to expect with both our cattle and horses. This includes, vaccinations, physical changes, proper minerals and feed for breeding, etc. I knew it was a lot of work, but there is a lot more involved than I expected. It has all been an awesome learning experience, and every month that goes by I feel more and more confident. I know my husband Glen knows all of this, but relying on him to do everything is ridiculous. Whatever I can learn to do on my own, I'm learning it!

So hopefully we will have a lot of darling farm babies soon.

4. Making calls for the best road base prices and driveway slurrie

It is done, and what a difference it has made. Not just to drive on, but looks too!

We even had some leftover for the fire pit area. I can't wait for it to warm up enough to put the cushions back out.

5. Falling Stars

We have been so lucky! We have seen, (all of us combined), 5 falling stars. In the city, even where we were in the suburbs, the city lights were too bright to really see a lot of stars. Out here, we see so many stars, it's really a treat. Seeing the amount of stars we do here at night, is something normally we would only experience during vacations to the mountains.

6. A donkey as a pet...

She sure is a sweet thing, that loves her herd of heifers, & her humans!

7. Our 1st Snow/Ice Day at Thistle Hill Ranch!

Even though we homeschool, if Dad gets a snow day from work, we take one too!

"Fifty Shades of Grammar" from Grammarly

Happy Valentine's Day!

It is no secret, that I LOVE books! I must confess, that I have not read "Fifty Shades of Grey".

I know...It's a cataclysmic FAIL!

It's hard to not hear how popular and wonderful this book is; but, between homeschooling and ranching, my free time to read my "for me" books, is very limited!

I love all genres of writing. I love reading the classics a lot! It is always interesting to me how much language has changed. This holds true for grammar as well.

Homeschooling my two boys, I have found myself second guessing my high school & college education in writing. I am constantly looking up what I think is grammatically incorrect, to verify that I'm right, or find out I was completely wrong. Not to mention, punctuation mistakes my children make in their writing, and making sure what I know, is still accurate. I think we all get complacent, and have bad habits.

Don't judge my punctuation and grammar now... I definitely have bad habits! I'm comma happy, among many other things.

So, it is always nice to have a "one stop shop" for learning in grammar. We love Grammarly and I sure like when Nikolas Baron writes to show me the latest and greatest at Grammarly.

Thistle Hill Ranch Happenings

Our week has been crazy busy. I guess that's why I haven't blogged in a week.

Here is a quick summation of the week:

We had their orthodontist visit, an hour and a half away, on Tuesday; and that always seems to mess up our flow for the week. But we were able to do our flex-day classes and even finish Art.

They were doing seascapes learning about the layering of colors. They seemed frustrated at first and then, they really got into the project. I was really pleased with their work. It's one of those projects that always comes out nicely and you really can't "mess up". Therefore, they aren't so consumed with how it looks and are really learning the techniques.

Wednesday, we had our driveway resurfaced, mowed our front meadow across the creek, with the tractor, and it looks so much better! Then, as he was mowing, I picked up trash from passerby's on the road....always pleasant..UGH!

We were able to break for lunch and decided on a picnic in our back pasture. We threw a big basket of food, folding table and chairs in the Kawasaki. Then, at the suggestion of the boys, they wanted to picnic in what they call, my circle of trees. I guess I mentioned wanting a picnic there someday enough, that they indulged me. It was so relaxing and such beautiful weather, it couldn't have been more perfect. Landen said that he swears everything tastes better at a picnic.

On Thursday, Glen and I were able to get more of the, still leftover ranch trash, from the previous owners, picked up and were able to make a dump and recycling run.

Then, with an empty trailer, we were able to get cattle and horse feed. He and the boys stripped and cleaned the stalls too, so all is clean and fresh. Due to my asthma, I let the guys clean tge stalls and I caught up on laundry and started dinner.

The list of "Ranch To Do's" are still long, but getting shorter.

I love getting things accomplished, I'm a do'er...so getting things organized, clean, and orderly make my heart SING!

Now I'm finally able to prove who keeps knocking down the urn at the pond...I guess I will have to move it, sigh...

Today the weather has turned to cold once more and rainy. I stocked up on good food, and new ideas for school next week.

So as I sit by the fire with our cozy Westies, I hope your weekend is just as cozy.

Homeschooling on Saturday?

YES, as some of you already know...Because we take off Wednesday & Thursday, which is my husband's day off. In sales, days off are often unpredictable. Now that we homeschool, he gets to spend time with them on his days off.

Homeschooling is great for crazy schedules! Depending on appointments, and ever changing schedules, you can adjust your schedule.

Writing a Short Story Together...To Be Continued!
