Sim racing hardware has gone through a quiet transformation over the past few years. Wheels now use force feedback systems that replicate the resistance of real steering racks. Pedals rely on load cells that measure braking pressure, not just pedal travel. Rigs are built from extruded aluminum profiles with the kind of structural rigidity you’d find in industrial equipment. In that context, a plastic shifter with contact-based switches felt increasingly out of place: the weakest component in an otherwise serious setup.

Logitech G’s RS H-Shifter addresses that gap. This is a 7+R speed manual shifter built with aluminum, steel, and high-strength plastic, equipped with Hall Effect contactless sensors, and designed to integrate across PC and console platforms. At $159.99, it sits at a price point that reflects serious hardware.

Materials that communicate intent

The RS H-Shifter’s construction tells you what it is before you shift a single gear. The combination of aluminum outer panels and steel internal components gives the unit a weight of 2.9 pounds (1,331 grams). That’s deliberate. A lightweight shifter feels unstable during aggressive use. The RS H-Shifter stays planted.

The weighted gear knob provides clear tactile feedback on every engagement, and the gate pattern has the kind of mechanical precision that rewards confident inputs. Each shift clicks into place with a decisive stop. There’s no ambiguity about whether you’ve found the gear.

Physical dimensions keep the footprint compact at 5.4 inches wide, 4.5 inches deep, and 6.2 inches tall (10.6 inches with the handle installed). For desk setups, a heavy-duty table clamp is included. For dedicated rigs, direct bolt mounting is supported. Both options ship in the box.

Hall Effect sensors and the durability problem they solve

Traditional shifters register gear positions through physical contact switches. Metal touches metal, circuits close, and the system reads the input. The problem is wear. Over hundreds of hours of use, those contacts degrade. Shifts that registered cleanly on month one start getting missed by month six. Consistency erodes gradually, and the user doesn’t always notice until performance drops off noticeably.

The RS H-Shifter eliminates that failure mode entirely. Hall Effect sensors detect gear positions through changes in magnetic fields. There’s no physical contact at the sensing point, which means no degradation curve. The shift quality on day one is the shift quality on day one thousand. It’s a sensor technology that’s been proven in high-end keyboards and precision controllers, now applied to a sim racing shifter where long-term reliability is critical.

Push-through lockout adds real-world authenticity

Reverse and 7th gear require a deliberate push-down on the knob before engaging, mimicking the lockout mechanisms found in actual manual transmissions. During aggressive downshifting or fast sequential inputs, this prevents accidental selection of the wrong gear. It’s a functional detail, not a gimmick. In GT, rally, and drift setups where split-second gear selection matters, that gate security provides genuine confidence.

Customization and ecosystem reach

The M8 thread standard on the gear knob opens up aftermarket options: weighted aluminum knobs, leather-wrapped alternatives, or shaft extenders that adjust throw length and reach. For anyone who’s built a cockpit with specific ergonomic requirements, this kind of adjustability is expected at this price tier. The RS H-Shifter delivers it.

Connectivity spans the full range of modern setups. The shifter plugs directly into Logitech’s RS50 or PRO Wheel bases without adapters. Console racers using G-Series wheels connect through the Logitech G Racing Adapter. PC users simply plug into USB, and the shifter functions independently of whatever wheel hardware is already in the rig. That last point matters: the RS H-Shifter isn’t locked into Logitech’s ecosystem unless you choose it to be.

Platform support covers PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.

A category that’s growing fast

Sim racing search interest has climbed 123% year over year, and the hardware market has responded with increasingly serious products at every price tier. The RS H-Shifter arrives at a moment when the audience is expanding beyond dedicated sim racers into a broader community of car enthusiasts, motorsport fans, and gear-focused consumers who want their home cockpit to feel as intentional as the rest of their setup.

At $159.99, the RS H-Shifter undercuts the Thrustmaster TH8A and comes in at roughly half the price of the Fanatec ClubSport Shifter, while offering Hall Effect sensor technology that neither competitor provides at this tier. For the buyer who wants premium materials, proven sensor technology, and broad platform compatibility without paying boutique prices, this is the product.

Pricing and availability

The Logitech G RS H-Shifter is available now for $159.99 at LogitechG.com and authorized retailers. The RS H-Shifter and RS Handbrake combo is also available at $169.99.

Every year at MWC, a handful of humanoid robots shuffle across demo stages while handlers hover nearby, ready to catch them if something goes wrong. The machines take cautious, pre-programmed steps, pause between gestures, and move with a stiffness that betrays how close they are to falling over. It’s impressive in the way that watching a toddler walk is impressive: you’re rooting for them, but you wouldn’t trust them with anything.

The AGIBOT X2 broke that pattern completely. At MWC 2026 in Barcelona, this four-foot-four humanoid dropped into a full split on the show floor, performed coordinated dance routines with fluid transitions, and navigated through crowds with a smoothness that stopped attendees mid-conversation. That’s why Gear Culture selected it as the Best Robotics product at this year’s show.

What makes the X2 different from every other humanoid at MWC

Movement is where the conversation starts and where most competitors lose it. The AGIBOT X2 Ultra runs 30 degrees of freedom across its body, with 7 DOF per arm, 3 DOF in the waist, 6 DOF per leg, and a single neck DOF that lets the head track conversations independently from the torso. Even the base model packs 25 DOF, which still exceeds what most show floor humanoids were working with in Barcelona.

What those numbers translate to in practice is the gap between robotics and movement. The X2 doesn’t just walk. It performs complex dance sequences where the arms, torso, and legs coordinate in real time, producing motion that reads as choreographed rather than pre-scripted. The head follows the rhythm independently. The waist rotates mid-stride. You can see the difference from across a crowded exhibition hall.

Peak joint torque hits 120 Nm, so each movement carries genuine force behind it. Arm reach extends 558 mm excluding end effectors, giving the X2 enough range to hand objects to seated adults, gesture toward signage or exhibits, and execute the sweeping arm movements that make its dance routines look fluid rather than constrained.

Then there’s speed. Maximum walking velocity reaches 1.8 meters per second, with lab conditions pushing that to 2.0 m/s. For reference, the average human walking speed is about 1.4 m/s. The X2 can literally outpace you on a sidewalk, which is a strange thing to type about a four-foot robot but there it is.

Physically, the X2 occupies a deliberate size category at 1,310 mm tall and roughly 35 kg (39 kg for the Ultra). It’s tall enough to maintain natural eye contact with a seated adult, compact enough to weave through a crowded mall corridor, and light enough that its presence near children or elderly visitors doesn’t feel like a liability. The exterior wraps in a soft, skin-friendly material that makes accidental contact feel intentional, like bumping into a person wearing a padded jacket rather than a cold machine.

The sensor stack that powers autonomous operation

Most humanoid robots define “autonomy” as following a pre-mapped path without hitting walls. The X2 Ultra redefines the term entirely.

Its perception system stacks 3D LiDAR for high-precision positioning and SLAM, RGB-D cameras for depth-aware spatial understanding, front stereo vision for forward obstacle detection, and rear monocular vision for coverage behind the robot. These aren’t isolated systems running in parallel. They feed into a unified environmental model that updates in real time, giving the X2 spatial awareness that extends in every direction simultaneously.

Computing power and the Ultra advantage

Both models run dual RK3588 processors as their main compute backbone, handling locomotion, sensor fusion, and interaction logic. The Ultra variant layers an NVIDIA Orin NX module on top, adding 157 TOPS of compute performance. That’s the same class of edge AI silicon found in autonomous vehicle platforms and industrial robotics rigs. The X2 Ultra pairs the Orin NX with an expanded perception suite, added connectivity including 4G and 5G cellular modules, and support for third-party secondary development.

The I/O ecosystem on the Ultra is built for integrators and developers. Dual RJ45 Ethernet ports handle wired network connections for venues that demand rock-solid latency. A Mini DisplayPort output enables external monitoring or signage displays. Four USB ports (two Type A, two Type C) provide expansion for peripherals, custom sensors, or third-party hardware modules. The base X2 keeps it simpler with one Type A and one Type C port and no wired networking options.

The wireless split tells you who each model is built for. The base X2 ships with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, enough for controlled environments with solid network infrastructure. The Ultra adds 4G and 5G cellular modules, keeping the robot online in venues where Wi-Fi coverage can’t be guaranteed. If you’re deploying somewhere that dropped connections mean a robot standing frozen in the middle of a museum tour, the Ultra is the only configuration that makes practical sense.

Already deployed, already working

Here’s where the AGIBOT X2 story diverges from every other humanoid robot at MWC 2026. This isn’t a prototype. It isn’t a carefully managed demo unit that lives in a shipping crate between trade shows. The X2 is a commercial product with an active supply chain, and the deployment numbers back that up.

AGIBOT says it rolled out its 5,000th mass-produced humanoid robot by early 2026, and Omdia estimated 5,168 humanoid shipments for the company in 2025.

Those units are deployed across eight commercial application areas: guided reception and exhibition services, entertainment and commercial performances, intelligent manufacturing, logistics sorting, security inspection, commercial cleaning, data collection training, and scientific research and education.

Operational autonomy extends to power management on the Ultra. When battery levels drop below threshold, the X2 Ultra automatically navigates to its dedicated charging station and docks itself without human intervention. For businesses running the Ultra across full-day shifts, that means the unit manages its own energy cycle from morning startup to evening shutdown. The base X2 does not support automatic charging and requires manual battery swaps or quick-swap packs.

The rental model makes adoption even more accessible. At MWC 2026, AGIBOT launched a Robot-as-a-Service program with one-day minimum rentals starting at €899, a figure widely described in English-language coverage as about $1,000 per day. With the base X2 listed at $24,240, a business can bring in a unit for a product launch, a weekend pop-up, or a two-week trial at a fraction of the purchase price. That pricing structure opens the door to industries that would never greenlight a capital expenditure on humanoid robotics but can justify a daily rental line item.

Credibility runs deeper than sales figures, though. AGIBOT’s A2 line set the Guinness World Record for the longest journey walked by a humanoid robot at 106.286 kilometers, a sustained endurance benchmark that speaks directly to the reliability of the company’s mechanical systems, battery architecture, and control algorithms. The X2 shares the same engineering lineage, built on lessons from that endurance program.

From the show floor to the Spring Festival stage

MWC 2026 wasn’t the first time the X2 drew a crowd. Ahead of Lunar New Year, AGIBOT staged its own live gala featuring more than 200 humanoid robots, using the event as a public showcase for synchronized dance, martial arts, and other performance routines. The choreography demanded precise timing, coordinated multi-robot movement, and the kind of dynamic balance that few bipedal platforms can sustain.

Two months before Barcelona, the X2 appeared at CES 2026 in Las Vegas. That dual-show strategy across both consumer electronics and mobile communications signals something important about where AGIBOT sees this product going: not a niche lab curiosity, but a commercial platform positioned across hospitality, retail, entertainment, and education simultaneously.

On the MWC show floor itself, social media told the story. Clips of the X2 dancing, splitting, and interacting with attendees flooded Instagram and YouTube within hours of the show opening. The consensus from everyone who saw it up close was consistent and emphatic: this robot moves differently than anything else in its weight class, and the gap isn’t subtle.

Two models, one platform

The X2 lineup splits into a standard model and the Ultra. The base X2 ships with 25 degrees of freedom, a single interactive RGB camera, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and the dual RK3588 compute stack. It’s built for straightforward deployment scenarios where multimodal interaction matters more than full autonomous navigation.

The Ultra pushes every dimension further. Degrees of freedom jump to 30 by adding a neck DOF and expanding each arm from 5 to 7 DOF, which dramatically improves gestural expressiveness and manipulation capability. The full sensor suite (3D LiDAR, RGB-D cameras, front stereo vision, rear monocular vision) comes standard. The NVIDIA Orin NX compute module handles the additional processing load, and 4G/5G connectivity keeps the robot online in venues where Wi-Fi coverage can’t be guaranteed.

Secondary development support on the Ultra is the sleeper feature. It opens the platform to custom applications, meaning a museum can build its own narration engine, a retailer can integrate the robot with inventory systems, and an event company can script bespoke routines. The optional auto-charging dock, paired with a dedicated charging station, seals the deal for continuous Ultra operation, letting the robot return to its station when battery drops below threshold and resume service after charging, no human intervention required.

Both variants share the same 500 Wh battery built around a quick-swap architecture. Pop the depleted pack out, slide a charged one in, and the robot resumes operation immediately. No tools, no recalibration, no downtime. Charge time runs under 90 minutes per pack, with roughly 2 hours of walking at 0.5 m/s per cycle.

Software stays current through over-the-air updates pushed to the fleet, and a mobile app gives operators remote monitoring and control when they aren’t physically on-site. The operating temperature range spans -10°C to 40°C, covering indoor climate-controlled venues year-round and most outdoor deployments across three seasons. That range matters for tourist attractions, outdoor malls, and exhibition spaces where seasonal temperature swings would sideline a less robust platform.

The multimodal interaction system

Movement gets people’s attention. Interaction is what makes the X2 useful after the novelty fades. AGIBOT designed the platform around four distinct interaction modes: visual, voice, tactile, and facial expression. Each channel runs independently, but the system’s real strength comes from blending all four in real time so the robot can read a situation the way a person would, through multiple senses at once.

The interactive RGB camera anchors the visual channel. It handles facial recognition, object detection, gesture recognition, and what AGIBOT calls environmental semantic perception, which means the robot interprets not just that someone is present but what they’re doing, where they’re looking, and how they’re moving. Voice input comes through a dedicated microphone array paired with a wireless mic option for noisy environments where a single pickup would struggle. Tactile input registers through the head touch sensor. Touch the top of the X2’s head and it nods or shakes in response, a small detail that consistently surprises people who try it because the reaction feels instinctive rather than programmed.

Output runs through dual stereo speakers mounted on each side, a front-facing interactive screen, and a programmable lighting system that shifts patterns based on interaction state. During a greeting, the lights pulse warmly. In active dialogue, they hold steady. On idle standby, they dim to a soft glow that signals availability without demanding attention. The screen handles visual communication: maps, product information, directional cues, and dynamic content that updates based on conversation context.

The facial expression display sits above the screen and adds emotional texture to every response. It conveys enthusiasm during a product recommendation, acknowledgment when a visitor asks a question, and attentiveness during longer exchanges. The expressions sync with voice output from the speakers, creating a communication loop that runs both directions. Visitors don’t need to lean in, shout, or tap a screen. The microphone array and wireless mic handle pickup in crowded, noisy venues, and the expression display confirms visually that the robot heard and understood.

For a museum tour, that means the X2 can greet a returning visitor by name, notice them pointing at an exhibit, deliver relevant background information without being prompted, and adjust pacing based on whether the group seems engaged or restless.

That’s a different category than walking smoothly. Plenty of robots can walk. Very few can read a room and respond to it.

In retail settings, the interaction layer turns the robot from a novelty into a functional employee that can direct traffic, answer product questions, and escalate complex requests to human staff without breaking conversational flow. In museum and exhibition deployments, the four-mode interaction system lets the X2 serve as a guide that adapts to its audience in real time, slowing its narration pace for older visitors, responding to children’s gestures with animated expressions, and switching languages mid-tour when the microphone array picks up a different one.

Why Gear Culture picked the X2

The best robotics product at a trade show isn’t always the most technically ambitious prototype behind a velvet rope. It’s the one furthest along the path from concept to real-world impact while still advancing what the category can do. Gear Culture has always evaluated MWC products on that balance of innovation, execution, and commercial readiness.

The AGIBOT X2 dominated on all three fronts. Movement quality that’s genuinely best-in-class among commercially available humanoid robots. A sensor and compute stack on the Ultra that rivals platforms costing five to ten times more. And real-world deployment at commercial scale (thousands of units across the AGIBOT portfolio in active commercial deployments, with the A2 line’s endurance benchmarks exceeding 100 kilometers) that proves the platform works outside the carefully controlled demo bubble.

The rental model is the final piece. Through a Robot-as-a-Service program starting at €899 per day, AGIBOT makes humanoid robotics accessible to businesses that couldn’t justify the $24,240 base purchase price, turning the X2 from a flagship product into an entire market category. That combination of performance, scale, and accessibility is why the AGIBOT X2 takes Gear Culture’s Best Robotics award home from MWC 2026 in Barcelona.

CES 2026 did not suffer from a lack of innovation. It suffered from too much of it. The show floor was packed with ambitious concepts, AI labels stretched thin, and hardware that looked impressive under lights but less convincing in daily life. Gear Culture’s Best in Show list exists to cut through that noise.

We’re late. CES wrapped weeks ago. But that delay let us filter the hype from the hardware that actually holds up under scrutiny. These ten products stood out because they solved real problems, respected design fundamentals, and showed restraint where others chased spectacle. This is not a list of trends. It is a list of gear we believe will matter after the banners come down.

1. Yarbo M Modular Robotic Platform

Category: Outdoor Robotics

Yard equipment has become a storage problem disguised as a convenience. Most garages quietly accumulate redundancy: a mower for summer, a leaf blower for fall, a snow thrower for winter. Each machine solves one seasonal problem, then sits idle for months demanding space, maintenance, and a fresh learning curve every time conditions change.

Yarbo M earns Gear Culture’s top honor because it redefines what outdoor automation can look like when it’s designed as a system rather than a single-purpose device. Instead of selling separate machines for mowing, snow removal, or yard cleanup, Yarbo built a 36V modular robotic base that adapts through attachments. One tracked chassis. Four seasonal jobs. The mowing module cuts a 15.7-inch swath. The snow plow handles a 25.6-inch blade with adjustable angle. The collector deals with leaves and debris. The trimmer manages edges autonomously.

Navigation accuracy was a major differentiator at CES 2026. Yarbo combines LiDAR, cameras, and bumper sensors powered by a 6 TOPS AI chip. That combination allows it to build its own map wire-free and operate confidently across uneven properties in changing conditions. The rubber tracks handle slopes up to 70 percent. The all-wheel drive hardware is not decorative. It is functional.

Why it earned Best in Show: Consolidation backed by real engineering. Fewer machines mean less maintenance, less storage, and fewer points of failure.

Who it’s for: Property owners who want infrastructure, not gadgets. Homeowners tired of seasonal equipment that sits idle eleven months a year.

Availability: The Yarbo M Series launches on Kickstarter in February 2026 with early-bird pricing for backers. Global pre-orders follow the campaign.

Category: Productivity Computing

A motorized hinge that responds to context instead of waiting for user input. That’s the entire value proposition, and it’s enough.

Laptop hinges have been frozen in time for decades. You adjust them manually, they stay where you put them, and the computer assumes your posture and use case never change. Lenovo’s ThinkBook Plus Gen 7 breaks that assumption. The screen rotates automatically based on how the laptop is being used, removing friction during collaboration, presentations, and shared viewing moments. No gestures. No prompts. It simply reacts. Reach for the touchscreen and the display folds into tablet orientation. Start a video call and the screen adjusts to improve camera framing. Begin a presentation and the display elevates and reorients for sharing.

What impressed most was the maturity of the mechanism. The hinge movement is deliberate, quiet, and precise. Lenovo clearly invested engineering time into making the motion feel intentional rather than flashy. Performance and thermals remain in line with expectations for a premium productivity laptop. At $1,649 arriving June 2026, this isn’t a concept. It’s shipping.

Why it earned Best in Show: A motorized hinge that responds to context instead of waiting for user input. The user no longer manages the hinge. The system does.

Who it’s for: People who move constantly between solo work and teamwork. Professionals whose laptops face outward as often as inward.

3. Lenovo Legion Pro Rollable Concept

Category: Gaming Hardware

Gaming laptops have always forced a compromise. You either buy a portable machine with a 16-inch screen that travels well, or you anchor yourself to a desk with an external monitor for real immersion.

Expandable displays finally make sense in gaming, and Lenovo’s Legion Pro Rollable proves it. The screen extends horizontally to increase usable display area without compromising portability. Open it and you start with a compact 16-inch display. Trigger the mechanism and the OLED panel physically expands into a dramatically wider 24-inch surface. Lenovo demonstrated multiple aspect ratios: 16:10 for productivity, 21:9 ultrawide for cinematic gaming, and an extreme 24:9 configuration that pushes field of view into multi-monitor territory.

Unlike many rollable concepts, this one did not feel fragile or theoretical. The panel uniformity, response time, and brightness held up during demonstrations. Cooling and power delivery were clearly considered as part of the design, not afterthoughts. Full RTX-class graphics ran without downclocking regardless of screen size.

Why it earned Best in Show: A functioning rollable OLED mechanism that repeatedly expanded and retracted while driving flagship gaming performance. One machine adapts to radically different environments without accessories.

Who it’s for: Gaming enthusiasts who want ultrawide immersion on the road without hauling an external monitor.

4. Hisense 116UXS RGB Mini LED Evo

Category: Display Technology

Every TV you’ve ever owned has been lying about the color blue. Standard RGB backlighting physically cannot reproduce the cyans and teals that exist in the real world. Ocean footage looks flat. Forest canopies lose depth. You’ve never noticed because you’ve never seen the alternative.

The 116UXS is the alternative. RGBC (Red, Green, Blue, Cyan) Mini LED Evo backlighting adds a dedicated cyan LED as a fourth primary, filling the color gap that’s existed since displays began. Hisense claims up to 110% of BT.2020 color coverage. The difference is immediately visible in scenes with cyan-green tones: ocean footage, forest canopies, northern lights sequences that previously looked flat now carry the depth you’d see in person.

At 116 inches, this is not a subtle announcement. But the innovation is architectural rather than aspirational. This is backlight technology, not per-pixel self-emission. The cyan primary lives in the backlight zones behind the LCD panel.

Why it earned Best in Show: It doesn’t iterate on color accuracy. It expands what color accuracy can mean. No other consumer TV at CES 2026 used a dedicated fourth-primary cyan emitter at this scale.

Who it’s for: Home theater enthusiasts and videophiles who understand why color volume matters as much as resolution. If you’ve ever wondered why your TV’s ocean footage looks flat compared to real water, this is the technology that explains the gap.

5. Beatbot AquaSense X Ecosystem

Category: Home Robotics

Pool robots have always stopped one step short of being truly automatic. They clean the water, then hand the mess back to you. Lift them out. Rinse the filter. Empty the debris. Find storage space. “Automatic” has always meant automated movement, not automated ownership.

Beatbot treated pool maintenance as a design problem. The AquaSense X uses intelligent mapping, debris classification, and efficient path planning to clean pools thoroughly without redundancy. But the real story is the AstroRinse Cleaning Station. After completing a cycle, dock the robot and a high-pressure rotating backflush rinses the internal filter and evacuates debris into a sealed waste bin in roughly three minutes. Charging begins automatically. The debris container holds about 22 liters, supporting extended operation measured in weeks rather than days.

The charging dock and app interface were notably approachable. This is a robot designed for homeowners, not technicians. Dual bottom-mounted ultrasonic sensors detect steps, ledges, and shallow platforms down to 13.7 inches, allowing the system to clean complex pool geometries without exclusion zones.

Why it earned Best in Show: The dock is not an accessory. It’s part of the product. For the first time, routine pool cleaning doesn’t end with a chore.

Who it’s for: Pool owners who want labor replacement, not just automated movement. Anyone who’s quietly avoided weekly cleaning because the post-clean ritual was annoying.

Picture checking a notification without reaching for your phone. Now picture doing it without anyone around you noticing. That’s the G2’s entire design philosophy.

Smart glasses have a social acceptance problem. Google Glass died because wearing it felt like a statement. Most competitors still announce themselves through bulk, balance problems, or visible tech. At just 36 grams with a magnesium alloy frame and titanium temples, the Even Realities G2 solves this by looking like beautiful, stylish glasses first. The weight matters because most smart glasses feel like equipment strapped to your face within the first hour. The G2 disappears. You forget you’re wearing anything unusual because the glasses behave like glasses.

Even HAO 2.0 (Holistic Adaptive Optics) makes the projector, waveguide, and prescription lenses work together as a single tuned platform. The floating display and real world both look good at the same time. IP65 water resistance and two-day battery life make this something you can wear every day.

Why it earned Best in Show: No cameras. No speakers broadcasting to everyone nearby. Just seamless notifications, navigation prompts, and real-time translation that arrive without announcing to the world that you’re wearing a computer on your face.

Who it’s for: Professionals who need glanceable information without pulling out a phone. Anyone who values aesthetics enough to reject tech that screams “tech.”

The NotePin S clips to your shirt and starts capturing with one button press. At 0.6 ounces (17g), this is the kind of device you forget you’re wearing until you need it. Dual microphones pick up audio from nearly 10 feet away. Four wearing modes (pin, wristband, lanyard, clip) fit whatever context you’re in: boardroom meetings, medical consultations, field interviews, casual conversations where you want a record without making it weird.

Press to Highlight lets you tap the device during recording to flag moments that matter. Plaud Intelligence handles transcription across 112 languages, recognizes industry jargon, and lets you search across months of recordings to find exactly what someone said and when.

Why it earned Best in Show: It removes the friction that keeps most people from recording in the first place. The cognitive load drops noticeably when you stop mentally cataloging every important point.

Who it’s for: Anyone who attends meetings, consultations, or conversations where the stakes are too high to rely on memory alone. Journalists, medical patients, legal professionals, and knowledge workers who’ve lost important details because they were too busy listening to take notes.

8. Creality SparkX i7

Category: Maker Technology

3D printing has spent years promising desktop fabrication and then burying that promise under calibration headaches, failed first layers, and forum threads written for people who already know what they’re doing.

The SparkX i7 takes a different bet: the barrier to entry matters more than the spec sheet. Setup takes under ten minutes from sealed box to active motion. AI Flow Calibration and AI Build Plate Detection handle bed leveling without intervention. The touchscreen walks through each step with clear prompts, and you never need to understand what the machine is doing to benefit from it working correctly.

The numbers still impress: 500mm/s print speeds (600mm/s max), 20,000mm/s² acceleration, and a 260×260×255mm build volume. The hardened steel nozzle rated to 300°C supports PLA, PETG, TPU, and PLA-CF. But specs don’t explain why this printer earned a trophy. The experience does. Successful early prints feel routine rather than surprising.

Why it earned Best in Show: At $339 early bird ($399 launch), Creality brought prosumer speeds and automation to an entry-level price. Printing becomes a casual activity rather than a technical project.

Who it’s for: Anyone who wanted to try 3D printing but never followed through because the learning curve felt too steep. Schools, makerspaces, and hobbyists who need reliable output without becoming calibration experts first.

9. Pongbot Pace S Pro

Category: Sports Training Technology

Tennis ball machines have operated on the same assumption for decades: fire balls at fixed intervals and let the player adjust. The problem is that real tennis doesn’t work that way. Recovery time varies shot to shot. Footwork demands change based on where the previous ball landed. The disconnect between mechanical repetition and actual match play has defined ball machine training since the technology existed.

Pongbot built the Pace S Pro around a different premise: the machine should respond to the player, not the other way around. The system uses ultra-wideband tracking at 100Hz sampling with sub-10cm accuracy to monitor player position in real time. Three smart trackers worn by the player feed movement data continuously. The machine knows where you are, how quickly you moved to get there, and when you’ve settled into a ready position.

That positioning intelligence powers what Pongbot calls Recovery Trigger technology. Instead of firing on a preset timer, the system waits until recovery is complete before launching the next ball. The distinction sounds incremental until you realize it fundamentally changes how solo practice sessions feel. Traditional machines force players into a sprint-hit-sprint cycle that bears little resemblance to actual rallies. The Pace S Pro adapts to the player rather than demanding the player adapt to fixed intervals.

Performance specs reach professional training territory: 80 mph ball speed, 60 rotations per second spin, and 1.5-second spin switching that Pongbot claims is the fastest on the market. The 150-ball hopper and 8-plus hour battery life support extended outdoor sessions. AI algorithms trained on over 100,000 real matches shape the adaptive features and 564 preset drills.

Why it earned Best in Show: The first tennis training machine to use UWB tracking for adaptive ball delivery. Pongbot didn’t just improve specs. They questioned whether ball machines should operate on fixed timing at all.

Who it’s for: Serious recreational players who practice multiple times weekly and want that solo time to count. Coaches who need programmable drills without manually feeding balls. Anyone who’s struggled to find consistent hitting partners and wants training that feels closer to actual match play.

Final Takeaway

CES 2026 was not about louder technology. It was about better execution.

Three patterns emerged from the products that earned recognition:

Modularity over excess. Yarbo’s single platform replaces four seasonal machines. Lenovo’s rollable screen adapts to context instead of forcing users into fixed form factors. The best hardware no longer demands you commit to a single configuration.

AI receding into infrastructure. The most impressive AI implementations were the ones you didn’t notice. Navigation systems that just work. Calibration that happens without prompts. Intelligence that supports rather than announces itself.

Hardware solving physical problems. Motorized hinges. Self-docking pool robots. Tracked yard platforms that handle real terrain. The products that stood out did so by removing friction from physical tasks, not by adding features to software.

Gear Culture’s Best in Show reflects that shift. These ten products matter because they solve problems, simplify ownership, and respect users’ time. That’s the technology worth paying attention to long after CES packs up and moves on.
The post Best in Show CES 2026: Gear Culture’s 9 That Actually Matter first appeared on GearCulture.

The Yarbo M Series is a modular robotic platform built around a shared 36V power architecture and a tracked mobility base. The system consolidates four distinct yard maintenance functions into a single compute and drivetrain core, with interchangeable task-specific modules that attach to the base unit. Each module inherits the platform’s navigation stack, battery capacity, and locomotion system, eliminating the need for redundant motors, processors, and power sources across seasonal equipment. This architectural approach prioritizes component reuse over single-purpose optimization.

From an engineering standpoint, the M Series represents a departure from the typical autonomous mower design philosophy. Conventional robotic lawn equipment dedicates all onboard resources to a single task, resulting in purpose-built machines that cannot adapt to other functions. The M Series inverts this model by treating the intelligent, powered chassis as the primary investment, with task modules functioning as relatively simple mechanical attachments. The tracked drivetrain, AI compute unit, sensor array, and battery pack remain constant across all configurations.

The platform debuted at CES 2026 and targets residential properties in North America and Europe. Yarbo positions the M Series below its existing Yarbo Robots, which serves larger estate-scale properties. The M Series accommodates mowing, leaf and debris collection, snow plowing, and edge trimming through its module ecosystem. All modules share the same mounting interface and draw power from a common battery system available in two capacity tiers.

The base unit employs a tracked chassis rather than the wheeled designs common in consumer robotic mowers. Tracks distribute weight across a larger contact surface, providing consistent traction on grass, snow, wet leaves, and inclined terrain without the slip common to rubber wheels on dewy turf. The tracked system also enables the platform to traverse obstacles approximately 2 inches (50 mm) in height, which accommodates landscape edging, shallow roots, and uneven pathway transitions.

Maximum travel speed is 3.9 feet per second (1.2 m/s) on the core platform, intentionally aligned with normal walking pace to support natural Follow Me behavior, while speed is reduced to 3.3 feet per second when the mower module is attached to account for cutting load and stability.

The compute architecture centers on a 6 TOPS AI processor that handles real-time sensor fusion, path planning, and obstacle avoidance. Sensor inputs include LiDAR, cameras, and bumper-mounted contact sensors, all feeding the navigation system simultaneously. The platform requires no buried boundary wires or manual perimeter walks, instead constructing its operational map autonomously from sensor data. This approach eliminates installation labor but shifts complexity to the onboard processing stack, which must reliably interpret yard geometry under varying lighting and weather conditions.

Power System and Battery Strategy

The M Series operates on a 36V electrical architecture with two interchangeable lithium battery options: 10Ah and 20Ah. Both packs use the same form factor and mounting interface, allowing users to swap capacities based on task requirements or upgrade over time. The battery selection directly affects motor power output on certain modules, not just runtime, creating a tiered performance model within the same hardware platform.

Motor scaling differs by module configuration. The mower attachment runs dual 150W motors (300W total) with the 10Ah battery and dual 300W motors (600W total) with the 20Ah battery. This doubling of power output enables the larger battery configuration to use straight cutting blades rather than the spinning disc cutters on the lower-tier setup. The power differential affects cut quality on dense or tall grass, where blade momentum and torque determine how cleanly stems are severed. Other modules do not exhibit the same motor scaling behavior, suggesting the mower module contains variable motor hardware while other attachments use fixed-output designs.

Runtime varies predictably with capacity. The 10Ah configuration delivers approximately 85 minutes of mowing per charge, covering roughly 0.1 acres (435 square meters) per cycle. The 20Ah configuration extends runtime to 110 minutes and approximately 0.2 acres (870 square meters) per charge. Daily and weekly coverage limits compound these figures: the 10Ah system maxes out at 1 acre daily and 3.5 acres weekly, while the 20Ah system reaches 1.5 acres daily and 5.25 acres weekly. These limits assume consistent return-to-base charging between cycles.

Wireless charging eliminates manual docking alignment. The base station uses inductive power transfer, bringing the 10Ah battery from 10 percent to 90 percent charge in 30 minutes. This rapid turnaround supports the multi-cycle daily coverage model, where the robot returns to charge multiple times during extended operation windows. The wireless approach also removes exposed electrical contacts that could corrode in outdoor environments or accumulate debris from yard work.

Navigation, Autonomy, and Compute Stack

The 6 TOPS AI chip serves as the platform’s central processing unit for all navigation and autonomy functions. TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second) measures the processor’s ability to execute parallel computations, a relevant metric for real-time sensor fusion where multiple data streams require simultaneous interpretation. The 6 TOPS rating positions the M Series above entry-level robotic mowers but below industrial autonomous vehicles, reflecting a mid-tier compute allocation appropriate for residential yard complexity.

ensor fusion combines LiDAR powered precise navigation with RTK support, camera based visual recognition, and physical bumper feedback into a unified environmental model.

Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, optional Wi-Fi HaLow, and optional 4G cellular. Wi-Fi HaLow operates on sub-1 GHz frequencies with extended range characteristics suited to large outdoor properties where standard 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi coverage degrades. The 4G option enables remote monitoring and control independent of local network infrastructure. The platform supports over-the-air firmware updates, allowing Yarbo to push navigation improvements and feature additions after purchase.

Module Hardware Breakdown

Mower Module

The mowing attachment measures 17.3 x 21.3 x 11.9 inches (440 x 541 x 302 mm) as a standalone unit, expanding the combined platform footprint to 36.7 x 21.3 x 13.5 inches (932 x 541 x 343 mm) when mounted. Cutting width spans 15.7 inches (399 mm), with adjustable height ranging from 1.2 to 4.0 inches (30 to 102 mm). The height range accommodates both closely cropped lawns and taller fescue or meadow grass varieties.

Performance limits tie directly to battery selection. The 10Ah configuration produces 58 dB of operational noise, covers 0.1 acres per charge cycle, and uses disc-style cutting elements. The 20Ah configuration maintains the same 58 dB noise floor while doubling per-charge coverage to 0.2 acres and switching to straight blade cutters. The blade type change reflects the additional torque available from the 300W motor pairing, which can drive heavier, more aggressive cutting geometry.

Operational constraints include the daily and weekly coverage ceilings mentioned previously. The platform cannot exceed 1.0 acre per day on the 10Ah battery or 1.5 acres on the 20Ah battery regardless of available charging time. These limits likely reflect thermal management requirements for the motors and battery pack during extended duty cycles. The 58 dB noise level falls below typical municipal daytime noise ordinances, permitting early morning or late evening operation in most residential jurisdictions.

Collector Module

The debris collection module measures 20.9 x 17.3 x 15.0 inches (531 x 439 x 381 mm) in combined configuration. Sweeping width is 11.8 inches (300 mm), feeding into a 25-liter (6.6 gallon) collection bin. The module handles wet leaves, pine needles, grass clippings, acorns, and small twigs without requiring pre-sorting or debris type selection.

The collection system supports over 50 programmable dumping locations, allowing the robot to deposit debris at designated spots around the property rather than requiring manual bin emptying. Route optimization algorithms minimize total cleaning time by calculating efficient collection paths that account for dumping point locations. The platform automatically resumes collection after each dump cycle without user intervention.

Operational constraints center on bin capacity relative to debris density. The 25-liter volume accommodates dry leaves at lower density than wet leaves or grass clippings. Users with heavy deciduous cover may require more frequent dumping cycles than the AI route optimizer initially predicts. The module lacks specifications for maximum debris weight, suggesting load limits depend on the tracked platform’s traction capacity rather than the collection bin itself.

Snow Plow Module

The plow attachment measures 17.3 x 28.9 x 12.6 inches (439 x 734 x 320 mm) as a standalone module, with a combined platform footprint of 35.0 x 29.9 x 13.5 inches (889 x 759 x 343 mm). Blade angle adjusts up to 25 degrees left or right from center, directing snow to either side of the travel path.

Coverage per charge varies by battery: 2,000 square feet (186 square meters) with the 10Ah pack, 4,000 square feet (372 square meters) with the 20Ah pack. These figures correspond to typical sidewalk, pathway, and two-car driveway combinations. Blade lifting clearance of 2.8 inches (71 mm) matches the platform’s obstacle traversal height, maintaining consistent ground clearance during plow operation. Noise output remains below 60 dB.

The plow module is designed for continuous clearing during active snowfall rather than post-storm accumulation removal. Repeated passes during precipitation prevent buildup that would exceed the blade’s pushing capacity. Deep snow recovery requires manual intervention or conventional equipment. The zero-emission, sub-60 dB operation profile positions the module against gas-powered snow blowers, which typically exceed 80 dB and produce combustion exhaust.

Trimmer Module

The edge trimmer uses a dual-line cutting system with 23 feet (7.0 meters) of line capacity. Automatic line feeding advances fresh cutting line as the existing material wears, eliminating the bump-feed or manual advance mechanisms common in handheld string trimmers. Adjustable trimming height spans 2 to 4 inches (51 to 102 mm).

The module’s autonomous edge intelligence navigates along walls, fences, garden bed borders, and tight corners without manual repositioning. Adaptive angle handling adjusts the cutting head orientation based on detected boundary geometry. This capability addresses the labor-intensive nature of manual edging, where users must walk the entire perimeter and manipulate equipment around obstacles.

Operational constraints relate to line material and vegetation type. String trimmer line performs well on grass and light weeds but struggles with woody stems or thick ground cover. The source documentation does not specify line diameter, limiting analysis of cutting capability against heavy vegetation. The 2 to 4-inch height range suggests the module targets grass edge maintenance rather than aggressive brush clearing.

Environmental and Mechanical Limits

The M Series is rated for slopes up to 70 percent grade (35 degrees), which exceeds the typical 10 to 15 percent grades found on suburban lawns. This capacity accommodates hilly terrain, embankments, and properties with significant elevation changes. The tracked drivetrain contributes to slope stability by distributing weight and preventing the wheel slip that limits conventional robotic mowers on inclines. Vertical obstacle clearance of 2 inches (50 mm) permits traversal of landscape borders, exposed roots, and pavement transitions without high-centering the chassis.

Operating temperature range spans minus 13°F to 113°F (minus 25°C to 45°C), covering seasonal extremes in most North American and European climates. The lower bound supports snow clearing operations in sub-freezing conditions, while the upper bound accommodates summer mowing in hot climates. Water resistance carries an IPX6 rating, indicating protection against high-pressure water jets from any direction. This rating exceeds the splash resistance (IPX4) typical of consumer electronics and permits operation in rain, sprinkler overspray, and wet grass conditions without damage to electrical components.

Physical Footprint and Storage Implications

Dimensions vary by module configuration, affecting both storage requirements and operational clearances. The Core plus Mower combination measures 36.7 x 21.3 x 13.5 inches (932 x 541 x 343 mm), representing the longest overall configuration due to the blade assembly extending beyond the base chassis. The Core plus Plow configuration is shorter at 35.0 inches in length but wider at 29.9 inches (759 mm) due to the angled blade geometry. The Core plus Collector combination is the most compact at 20.9 x 17.3 x 15.0 inches (531 x 439 x 381 mm).

The sub-30-inch width of all configurations permits passage through standard residential side gates, which typically measure 36 inches (914 mm) or wider. This clearance enables front-to-back yard access without requiring the robot to traverse through the home or be manually transported. The 13.5-inch maximum height accommodates storage under standard workbench surfaces or on garage shelving rated for 50+ pounds.

Storage efficiency depends on how users manage the module ecosystem. Maintaining all four modules requires space for the base unit plus three detached attachments, each with its own dimensional footprint. Users who swap modules seasonally can store off-season attachments in alternate locations, but the total volumetric requirement exceeds that of single-purpose equipment by a significant margin. The trade-off favors reduced active storage (one robot versus multiple machines) at the cost of increased passive storage (detached modules during off-seasons).

Value Logic of a Modular Yard Robot

The economic argument for modular yard robotics rests on component consolidation. A conventional equipment approach requires separate motors, batteries, and control systems for each seasonal task. The M Series eliminates this redundancy by concentrating compute, power, and mobility into a single platform that serves all modules. Users invest once in the intelligent base and incrementally add task capability through mechanically simpler attachments that lack their own propulsion or navigation systems.

Seasonal utilization patterns affect the value calculation. A dedicated robotic mower operates during growing season months but sits idle through winter. A dedicated snow removal system operates only during snow events. The M Series platform remains in use across seasons, shifting between mowing, leaf collection, and snow clearing as conditions change. This distributed utilization amortizes the base platform cost across more operating hours than any single-purpose equivalent.

The reuse of battery capacity across modules represents additional consolidation. Rather than purchasing separate battery packs for a robotic mower, leaf blower, snow equipment, and string trimmer, users maintain one or two battery packs that power all attachments. Battery cost and longevity become singular concerns rather than multiplied across equipment categories. The 10Ah to 20Ah upgrade path also allows performance scaling without platform replacement.

Module-specific value depends on individual property requirements. Users who need all four capabilities extract maximum platform value. Users who need only two capabilities pay for base platform overhead that serves fewer functions. The value equation favors properties with genuine multi-seasonal maintenance demands over properties where one or two tasks dominate the annual workload.

Who This Platform Is Technically Excessive For

Properties under 0.25 acres (1,012 square meters) with flat terrain and minimal landscaping features represent a capability mismatch for the M Series. The platform’s slope handling, obstacle navigation, and multi-module architecture address complexity that such properties lack. A conventional push mower handles the mowing task in equivalent time without the autonomous system overhead. The weekly coverage capacity of 3.5 to 5.25 acres dramatically exceeds what small-lot owners require.

Climate regions without meaningful snowfall eliminate one of the four module use cases entirely. Southern and coastal properties may never require the plow attachment, reducing the seasonal utilization that justifies modular architecture. Similarly, properties with minimal tree cover generate little leaf debris, diminishing the collector module’s relevance. The platform’s value proposition scales with environmental complexity.

Users who prioritize capital efficiency over labor savings may find the modular premium unjustified. A basic robotic mower, manual leaf rake, conventional snow shovel, and corded string trimmer accomplish the same tasks at lower combined cost, though with greater time investment. The M Series trades upfront capital for ongoing labor reduction, a calculation that favors users who value time over equipment expense and own properties complex enough to benefit from autonomous operation.

Engineering and Market Positioning Summary

Yarbo’s design strategy with the M Series prioritizes platform extensibility over single-task optimization. The engineering decisions reflect this priority: tracked locomotion for multi-surface versatility, a compute stack capable of diverse navigation scenarios, and a power architecture that scales across battery tiers. The modular interface allows future attachment development without base platform redesign, though third-party module compatibility remains unconfirmed in available documentation.

Within the residential robotics market, the M Series occupies a position between single-purpose autonomous mowers and commercial-grade multi-function equipment. Consumer robotic mowers from established brands handle lawn maintenance exclusively, while commercial grounds equipment addresses institutional scale. The M Series bridges this gap by offering multi-function capability at residential scale, targeting homeowners whose properties justify automation across seasonal tasks but do not require commercial equipment capacity.

The platform launches on Kickstarter following CES 2026, with pre-orders scheduled for February 2026. Yarbo maintains shipping history through its previous Yarbo robots product line, providing precedent for production execution. Weight specifications and final pricing remain unannounced. The M Series represents Yarbo’s entry into mainstream residential markets after establishing presence in the larger-property segment with the previous Yarbo robots.
The post Yarbo M Series: One Robotic Platform, Four Seasonal Jobs first appeared on GearCulture.

Step onto the course with the Bushnell Pro X3+LINK and you’re instantly equipped with a device that feels like it was made just for your game. Packed with the latest technology, it provides accurate distances and valuable data that help make smarter shots. The Wind and LINK Enabled Technology turn guesswork into quick, clear insights, giving you confidence in every decision. It’s an all-in-one tool designed to elevate your play without adding complexity.

Bushnell’s patented Slope technology now factors in temperature and altitude to give you precise distances based on your current environment. You can input your home elevation so the device adjusts accordingly for consistent results wherever you play. The locking slope switch prevents accidental mode changes during tournaments, keeping everything fair and square.

Wind can be tricky and unpredictable, but Bushnell simplifies its effects into two straightforward readings: hurt or help and left or right. These quick insights make it easier to adjust your aim based on crosswinds, helping you avoid costly mistakes. The device breaks down complex wind patterns into simple data that any golfer can understand and act upon instantly.

The rangefinder also integrates seamlessly with Foresight Sports launch monitors through Link Enabled technology. This partnership delivers real-time yardages and personalized club recommendations directly to your display, saving time and reducing guesswork. Switching between bright red or black displays ensures visibility in all lighting conditions while vibrating alerts confirm when you’ve locked onto the flag.

Convenience is built into every aspect of this device. The BITE magnetic mount attaches easily to any golf cart bar, keeping the rangefinder secure during your round. Its durable rubber armor protects it from bumps, while the included case makes storage simple after play. Consistent yardages over long distances ensure reliable performance that can help lower scores and improve your game with less fussing around.

Logitech is diving deeper into the mechanical keyboard pool. Meet the Alto Keys K98M, a wireless beauty that balances premium engineering with ease of use. No fluff, just a solid build meant for those who want their keys to feel right and work quietly, without sacrificing that satisfying tactile punch.

How? Thanks to a UniCushion gasket mount. Think of it as a vibration dampener that smooths out every keystroke and keeps noise down. It’s like your favorite pair of shoes that’s firm, comfortable, and ready for marathon sessions.

Beneath the surface are hot-swappable Marble Switches—linear action at your fingertips, no soldering required. You can tweak them to match your vibe, whether that’s fast-paced gaming or marathon workdays. The concave PBT keycaps aren’t just durable; they feel solid under your fingers and keep their look after countless presses. And the white backlight? It adds clarity without blinding you.

The 98-key layout is perfect for keeping your desk clutter-free but still packed with function. Customizable Action Keys via Logi Options+ let you assign shortcuts to make your workflow flow easier than ever. Wireless connection is offered via Bluetooth or Logi Bolt receiver.

The true advantage here is the built-in GPS and rangefinder working together with the 3.5″ color HD touchscreen. One press of a button, and you get yardages for every hole, no need to stop, fish out another device, or mess with apps. It offers golfers to see all hole layouts and shapes of greens, as well as off locations and layup points around hazards on screen.

Battery life is great. The Wingman HD offers enough juice for several rounds between charges, typically around 10 hours of playtime which means fewer interruptions on busy weekends. Its intuitive app syncs easily with smartphones, providing detailed yardage data and even giving some handy shot suggestions based on distance and terrain considerations.

The Bushnell Wingman HD is made for golfers who care about their game but don’t want to give up a good time. It combines accurate yardage, immersive sound, and visual course info in one tough package, ready to handle whatever the course throws at you. It’s a device for all types of golfers looking to step up their game and have fun doing it.

Nomad’s new Stand One wireless charger just got a serious upgrade. The fourth generation now supports the Qi2 25W standard, delivering up to three times faster charging for compatible phones. That means you can get your iPhone 17 from zero to fifty percent in about half an hour. Even older models benefit from its efficient, reliable power every time you dock.

The latest version also adds a second charging coil, so you can power your phone and earbuds at the same time. Its sturdy metal and glass build weighs over a pound, giving it a solid feel that stays put on your desk or nightstand. Plus, the 21-degree viewing angle makes it ideal for iPhone StandBy mode in either portrait or landscape orientation.

Available in Silver or Carbide, this minimalist 2-in-1 charger looks as sleek as it performs. Nomad also offers the Stand One Max with an Apple Watch fast charger. Both require a 40W USB-C adapter and include a two-meter braided cable. Thanks to upgraded tech and thoughtful design, the Nomad Stand One is one of the best wireless chargers you can buy right now.

Bushnell’s A1-Slope Rangefinder arrives ready to prove that accuracy and ease matter more than flashy features. It’s not a toy for casual players but a tool made for serious golfers looking to shave strokes. With a sleek, compact design, it slips easily into your pocket without adding bulk or weight. This device is made for golfers who consider their gear an extension of their game. It’s dependable, accurate, and ready to deliver results when it matters most.

Right out of the box, you’ll notice how intuitive it feels. The ergonomic shape sits comfortably in the hand, with buttons that are easy to find and operate without needing a PhD in engineering. The OLED display is bright enough for sunny days but discreet enough to keep your focus. Its standout feature is the slope mode, which adjusts yardages based on elevation changes, giving you more precise numbers and smarter club choices without any complicated setup.

On the course, performance is where this device shines. It locks onto targets up to 1,300 yards away with speed and accuracy that serious players demand. The scan mode allows you to sweep across hazards or pins without losing sight of what matters most. Plus, it is tournament safe thanks to a simple switch that disables slope mode when needed, so everything remains legit.
