Yesterday we posted some thoughts on the iTunes App Store and the growing challenge posed by 100,000 apps. In the current environment it is increasingly difficult for developers to their apps noticed. It is equally hard for customers to notice the apps that deserve attention. There are a number of techniques that can be employed to try to make sense of the current situation.

One approach is the “My Comfortable Old Shoes” approach. In this approach you simply stick with the apps you currently have and smile.
It is simple, it is cheap, and it avoids the headache of sorting through 100,000 apps in the App Store.

Another approach is the “More Is Always Better” approach. In this approach you simply spend hours each day combing through the various RSS feeds that display updated and new applications. It is a full-time job but then again since “more is always better” it is certainly worth the time and the effort.

There is, however, a third approach. This approach uses an intelligent sorting system to rate the apps that you currently have and then use those current likes and dislikes to sort through all of the new apps in an automated manner. That’s the idea behind the new system Apptizr. Apptizr “captures individual user’s interests to make personal app recommendations. Users can receive app recommendations both on the Apptizr website and via a weekly email.”

It seems as if finding the perfect Bluetooth headset has become a never-ending quest for me; it’s not just about finding one that keeps me from sounding like a fish in a barrel anymore, it’s also about finding one that fits my ear without making me look like a telephone operator or worse – a borg.  Just to make things really difficult, so many headsets seem to fall into one of two camps: ridiculously complicated and over-featured or utterly simplistic and featureless.

Finding a headset that strikes a balance between sound, comfort and features has become my mission, and the latest contender is the Plantronics Discovery 975.

After using the G1 for about three months, I came to one conclusion.  The battery life just sucks.  You can’t get through a day with light use and if you are a heavy user, like myself, you will need to charge before you even get halfway through a day.  The Kanex High Capacity Battery for the G1 solves this and gives a heavy G1 user like myself all day battery life.

I spent a year running, and being the primary writer for, a site devoted specifically to iPhone apps. I remember the mad rush when the App Store first went on line. Populating the database had to be done by hand since the App Store wasn’t easily copyable, and no RSS feeds of new apps were yet available. The process was painful. Copy the app’s information, grab a screen-shot, grab a link to its location in the App Store, put all the data into the site’s database.

I sent the better part of four days of my summer vacation manually putting in all the apps that were there… all 552 of them.

Fast forward less than a year and a half and there are now more than 100,000 apps available in the App Store. That’s a pretty remarkable growth-rate. No, it is down-right unbelievable. I’m not too sure that the Rolling Razor is that much safer to use: after all, nicks and scratches are common with even the most basic stick styles, and I can only imagine the damage I could inflict with something like this. But according to the Rolling Razor site, using one helps to eliminate irritation, nicks, cuts, razor bumps and burn.

I stopped into my local Best Buy this afternoon and was amazed at the great selection  of prepaid cellular phones. As recently as a year ago the prepaid phone aisle was limited to cheap plastic throwaways. Fast forward to now, and the shelves are lined with current model BlackBerry and Motorola phones available on no contract prepaid plans.   Boost Mobile has been one of the leaders in selling affordable prepaid phones that don’t make you ashamed to use them in public.  Last week we looked at the i465 (great texting device and solid call quality). This week we’re looking at the Boost Mobile i9. It’s essentially a Motorola Razr fitted with the walkie talkie feature that Boost is known for. RIM is hosting their second annual BlackBerry Developer Conference next week, November 9th-12th in San Francisco, CA.   This event will, in many respects, be critical for RIM and the BlackBerry platform.  It was not that long ago that RIM’s devices were merely simple mobitex pagers that had business users excited at the prospect of seeing Ds and Rs next to messages that were delivered & read between colleagues.

The BlackBerry lineup of devices have since matured to be the corporate user’s primary messaging machine, and handily infiltrated the consumer space with Pearls, Curves, Bolds and Storms.  RIM is now hoping to attract more developers to their platform and increase market share in an already competitive arena where the iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile and webOS continue to sway both consumer and corporate users.

Full disclosure.  I haven’t touched a Droid yet.  I have an iPod Touch and use a Palm Pre as my everyday device.

Here is my humble opinion.

The Motorola Droid will sell well.  Not awesome, but well.  There is a lot of pent up demand from those locked into Verizon who wanted a serious smart phone, and they definitely get it here.

I see very few people dumping an iPhone to switch to this.  Sure it has a few benefits, but it also has a fair number of weaknesses when compared, and nobody is switching carriers over the differences. … [visit site to read more]

I love the Wii I received for my birthday last year. I never cease to be amazing by its motion-sensing controls and the remarkable flexibility of the system.

I’m not a golfer in real life but on the Wii… love it.

I’m not a tennis player in real life… but in my den I sure am, thanks to the Wii.

Yes, with the Wii I can fight dragons, play tennis and then, minutes later start a workout routine. Until now, however, I used the Wii Remote and imagined it was a golf club, a tennis racket or a sword.
