Silicon Valley is going to introduce a new innovative gadget. The Android powered helmet that gives its rider directions, map locations and weather forecasts has been developed.

Researchers at Fudan University in Shanghai have just become the latest to demonstrate a technology that transmits data as light instead of radio waves, which gets around the congestion issue and could be ten times faster than traditional Wi-Fi.

In dense urban areas, the range within which Wi-Fi signals are transmitted is increasingly crowded with noise—mostly, other Wi-Fi signals. What’s more, the physics of electromagnetic waves sets an upper limit to the bandwidth of traditional Wi-Fi. The short version: you can only transmit so much data at a given frequency. The lower the frequency of the wave, the less it can transmit.

10x faster connections than Wi-Fi, through the nearest lamp

But what if you could transmit data using waves of much higher frequencies, and without needing a spectrum license from your country’s telecoms regulator? Light, like radio, is an electromagnetic wave, but it has about 100,000 times the frequency of a Wi-Fi signal, and nobody needs a license to make a light bulb. All you need is a way to make its brightness flicker very rapidly and accurately so it can carry a signal.

The idea sounds daft: Who would want to sit under a flickering bulb? But Li-Fi, a standard proposed just two years ago, is seeing rapid technological progress.

First, data are transmitted to an LED light bulb—it could be the one illuminating the room in which you’re sitting now. Then the lightbulb is flicked on and off very quickly, up to billions of times per second. That flicker is so fast that the human eye cannot perceive it. (For comparison, the average energy-saving compact fluorescent bulb already flickers between 10,000 and 40,000 times per second.) Then a receiver on a computer or mobile device—basically, a little camera that can see visible light—decodes that flickering into data. LED bulbs can be flicked on and off quickly enough to transmit data around ten times as fast the fastest Wi-Fi networks. (If they could be manipulated faster, the bandwidth would be even higher.)

Li-Fi’s limitations are similar to next-generation Wi-Fi

Li-Fi has one big drawback compared to Wi-Fi: you, or rather your device, need to be within sight of the bulb. It wouldn’t necessarily need to be a special bulb; in principle, overhead lights at work or at home could be wired to the internet. But it would mean that, unlike with Wi-Fi, you couldn’t go into the next room unless there were wired bulbs there too.

However, a new generation of ultrafast Wi-Fi devices that we’re likely to start using soon face a similar limitation. They use a higher range of radio frequencies, which aren’t as crowded with other signals (at least for now), and have a higher bandwidth, but, like visible light, cannot penetrate walls.

Engineers and a handful of startups, like Oledcomm, have been experimenting with Li-Fi technology. The Fudan University team unveiled an experimental Li-Fi network in which four PCs were all connected to the same light bulb. Other researchers are working on transmitting data via different colors of LED lights—imagine, for example, transmitting different signals through each of the the red, green and blue LEDs inside a multi-colored LED light bulb.

Because of its limitations, Li-Fi won’t do away with other wireless networks. But it could supplement them in congested areas, and replace them in places where radio signals need to be kept to a minimum, like hospitals, or where they don’t work, such as underwater.

Rockstar says that a PSN server issue was the culprit in PS3 users’ GTA Online woes, as it “was limiting the amount of possible concurrent users,” therefore “preventing most players from accessing GTA Online altogether and as of this morning, that problem was resolved.”

The launch issues for GTA Online were expected. Ahead of release last week, Rockstar said players should expect various "growing pains," including crashes, glitches, "crazy bugs," and gameplay modes and mechanics that need rebalancing.

These issues are "inevitable," Rockstar said at the time, due to the "massive" nature of the open-world game.

Google today announced the launch of Web Designer, a new tool for building interactive HTML5 sites and ads. The company first hinted at this launch in June, but had been quiet about it ever since. Web Designer, which Google calls a “professional-quality design tool,” is now officially in public beta and available for download for Mac and Windows.

HTML 5 is fast becoming the standard for interactive and responsive web user-interfaces. Google describes HTML5 as a “universal language for building beautiful, engaging content that can run across desktops, smartphones, and tablets.”

Apple has released the Gold Master version of OS X Mavericks, its new desktop operating system, to developers.

The Gold Master version of OS X Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store according to 9to5Mac, which originally reported the development.

The same site had earlier reported that Apple was finishing up work on OS X Mavericks and starting work on iOS 8 and the next version of OS X, 10.10 codenamed Syrah. The website mentions that its sources have indicated the possibility of a new design across the system in OS X 10.10 which would be on the lines of iOS 7 but much more subtle.

The release of the Gold Master version of OS X (10.9) Mavericks implies that work is complete on the operating system and Apple will most likely release the same build of the OS, including a few last minute updates, to the public later this month. The user can use the touchscreen to react to what is displayed and to control how it is displayed (for example by zooming the text size).

Capacitive touch screen :

E.A. Johnson described his work on capacitive touch screens in a short article which is published in 1965.

The capacitive touch screen is made up of a glass panel that is coated with a material.
The property of this material is that it can store electrical charge. So the capacitive touchscreens basically stores electrical charge.
But for good, Human body can also store charge. So, when you touch this screen with your finger, some of these charges on the screen gets transferred to your finger. The oscillator circuits located at the corner of your system will then sense this decrease in the charge on screen and the spot the exact location where touch occurred, and then transfers this specified information to the touchscreen driver software.

Resistive touch screen :

A resistive touch screen was developed by American inventor G. Samuel Hurst on Oct. 7, 1975.The first version was produced in 1982.

Resistive touch screen, on the other hand is again made up of normal glass panel. However, this glass panel in this case is coated with three layers.

Two of these layers being conductive and resistive are kept apart using spacers while the third scratch-resistant layer covers the whole setup

When the resistive touch screen system is running, current flows through these layers. On a finger touch, the two layers get connected and change in electrical field occurs. The system calculates the coordinates of point of contact and passes them to touch screen driver software.

Now that you understand how Capacitive touch screen and Resistive touch screens work, lets figure out Pros and Cons of each of these touch screens.

Pros:

Relatively cheaper
Can operate with any pointing devices like stylus, pen, nail etc
Can operate at any level of humidity
Ease of use, as it could be used even with your winter gloves on!
Very useful for people using handwriting recongition system, due to ease of use with a stylus!
More accurate than capacitive touch screen!
Old technology and hence more reliable!

Cons:

Multi touch support not available. Though technology did evolve after some modifications with the existing resistive touch screen circuitry, its still not 100% developed yet!
Highly sensitive. As it can operate with almost any sort of pointing devices, can be more vulnerable with dust particles!
Poor visibility in sunlight, mostly due to multiple layers reflecting light!
Screen, being sensitive at the upper layer, can be more vulnerable to scratches!

BBM For Android Leaks As APK

BBM for Android and iOS are coming soon, but the former suffered a leak this weekend that lets users sideload the APK file and open the app. Unfortunately for most, likely because BlackBerry saw this day coming from a mile away, the actual functionality — logging in with a BlackBerry ID and using the app — is restricted to a small number of whitelisted accounts.

We saw the application leaked on video a couple of weeks back, with one lucky user giving us a nice run through of everything we can expect. It’s full-on Blackberry, with the company’s design time ditching Holo for an experience that matches what you can find on their own devices.

BlackBerry said the service would go live before the end of the summer, following its announcement at BlackBerry World Live 2013 in May.

More recent reports have claimed BBM will launch before the end of September although BlackBerry is remaining very tight-lipped about concrete release dates. Adding fuel to the speculative bonfire that is when-will-BBM-come-to-Android is the news that Samsung Galaxy handsets may get the service first via the company’s Samsung Apps portal.

Facebook and Twitter became widely accessible to Iranian users on Monday for the first time since 2009, when the services were blocked in the midst of widespread protests against former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, according to reports emerging from the country.

Android 4.4 system named 'KitKat'

Google, which is known for nick-naming its Android mobile operating systems for smartphones and tablets after desserts, has chosen a brand-name candy for its 4.4 version that's expected to launch this fall: Kit Kat.

Financial terms weren't disclosed for the sweet deal between Google and Hershey Co., which makes Kit Kat. But the deal shows that naming a stadium or sponsoring a TV show can be seen as old school. The latest marketing craze may be to slap a brand name on a tech product.

Google approached Hershey about six to nine months ago for permission to use the name, said Jennifer Podhajsky, vice president of U.S. chocolate at Hershey, which licenses the Kit Kat brand in the U.S., while Nestle owns the worldwide brand.

Podhajsky said that Kit Kat's jingle is a good fit for people taking a break to look at their smartphones or tablets. She added that the deal appeals to Hershey because Android hits the sweet spot of Kit Kat eaters, who are typically between the ages of 18 and 34.

"Kit Kat consumers are young, vibrant consumers of candy and chocolate bars, and that's a nice match with Android," Podhajsky said.

The Kit Kat name was unexpected since tech pundits have speculated for months that the next operating system would be called Key Lime Pie. Marc Vanlerberghe, director of Android Marketing, said the name was chosen because Kit Kat bars have been a "favorite go-to snack among the team since the early days of Android."

The Android 4.4 Kit Kat system is expected to launch in October. The software is now running on more than 750 million smartphones and tablets throughout the world, making it the world's most widely used mobile operating system.

It is obvious that 3D printing can be of great value in architecture, engineering and automotive facets, however, industries such as the Fashion do not usually come to mind when thinking about this innovative technology. Imagine having the ability to print your clothes?

An obvious example of an industry that cuts costs and speeds up processes is manufacturing. Product prototypes can be printed and tested several times using different sizing, changing angles, testing useability and actually being able to touch the product without going through the expensive process of making the actual product. This would save a lot of time and money while in the testing phase. The possibilities are endless in this industry. However a great compliment to this would be the uses in advertising. So now that the prototype is created, you can easily use 3D printing to develop actual size models and even with working parts. Why is this important? You can now easily pitch the product to others using this lifelike model to pitch to investors BEFORE going through the expense of manufacturing. If you are able to gain an interest from investors you can send some samples out to trade shows and stores to get consumers trying out the product and giving their feedback. This would be a huge cost savings since the product developer can have a product which will fit the consumers needs and will have already created a buzz before launching.

Also, think about all of the swag that you receive when attending a trade show or event and think of how 3D printing helps companies to take full control of their collateral by being able to print them on the spot? Imagine Disney being able to put your child’s face onto a Disney princess doll that you purchase as a souvenir? Or at a classic car show being able to make a toy size replica of your favorite car? What better way to commemorate your time at the event then a picture. You could even have a replica made of yourself.

There is still a lot of controversy surrounding the printing of guns that actually fire. The problem here is that material can be used which are not detected by metal detectors and this can cause a threat to public safety. This is a huge worry and there have been talks of blocking the gun designs from the printers, however, this is usually a task that most hackers are able to get around. The receiver is the piece to the puzzle that most government regulations ban the creation of since it is the part that actually makes the weapon work. And what do these printed guns fire? Well 3D printed bullets of course. Could this cause a pandemonium of illegal gun printing in our near future? This is to be determined.
