Review: Space Settlers App for iOS – it’s free, but not exciting

Over the weekend, I played with a game called Space Settlers. The makers of the game have been trying to get me to review the app for about a month now. So I finally set some time to play with the free app on my iPod Touch. According to their iTunes page, Space Settlers is an online multi-player Sci-Fi game that features “mecha combat and real-time strategy” (their words). I never actually got to the combat part because I got bored with the first part of the game and quitted.

I recently checked out Fable: The Journey at the library. I was intrigued by the description on the back cover, which leads you to believe it’s a game about magic. My kids are into magic (thanks to Harry Potter), so I checked out the video game for them. I played the game with my oldest daughter. We both enjoyed Fable: The Journey, but we thought the game starts off really, really slow.

No Starch Press sent me their Python for Kids book to review on my geek dad blog. I think it’s part of their plan to turn all kids into geeks. Python For Kids, written by Jason R. Briggs, is an introductory book about the Python computer programming language. The book features fun examples, colorful illustrations, and kid friendly explanation. The book is intended for children aged 10 and up. However, it’s also suitable for adults who want to learn how to program with Python. For instance, I don’t know the language and I can see myself using this book if I wanted to get started on Python. Python for Kids: A Playful Introduction to Programming is available now with a list price of $34.95. You can currently purchase it on Amazon for $18.52.

I checked out Disney Princess: Enchanted Journey (Disney Interactive Studios) from the library recently. It’s a game geared mainly at little girls. However, my toddler loves it too. Disney Princess: Enchanted Journey is rated E for Everyone. It’s a safe and fun game for young kids. Disney Princess: Enchanted Journey has a list price of $19.99. However, you can currently purchase the video game for $14 on Amazon.

Video Game Review: Just Dance 4 – it’s a lot of fun for the whole family

We recently checked out Just Dance 4 (Ubisoft) at the library. All four of my children (ages three to twelve) and I enjoyed the video game. The game is a lot of fun. The girls loved it the most. In fact, my youngest daughter (age seven) played for hours (not a good thing, right?). She had a blast and was hooked. Just Dance 4 is available now for the Nintendo Wii, Sony Playstation, Xbox Kinect, and Wii U. It has a list of $39.99, but you can currently purchase it for $38.69 on Amazon. The game is rated Everyone 10+.

Video Game Review: 007 Legends – it isn’t very legendary

I saw the 007 Legends video game (Activision) at the library and checked it out. This is not my kind of game. I’m not a fan of 3D-like games that require me to shoot at villains while being shot at. But I am a fan of the James Bond movies, so I checked out the game against my better judgement. I’ve should have stuck with my gut instinct because I didn’t think 007 Legends was very good. It’s not an awful game, but with a list price of $59.99, it should have been better.

Video Game Review: Goosebumps Horrorland – it’s ghoulishly fun

Scholastic recently sent me the Goosebumps Horrorland Wii video game for review on my geek dad blog. As you can tell by the title, the game has a ghoulish theme (just like the Goosebumps books and TV series). The kids and I found the game fun and entertaining. It’ll make an excellent holiday gift for a Goosebumps fan. And with a list price of only $29.99 for the Nintendo Wii version, the game won’t cost you an eyeball or limb. If you hurry, you can even purchase Goosebumps Horrorland for only $12.95 on Amazon. The company is also selling the DS version for just $8.26. There is also a Sony Playstation version for $25-$30. The game is rated Everyone 10+.

Over the weekend, I checked out Kinect Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure at the library. The game is totally fun — especially if you and your kids love Pixar movies. Kinect Rush features five games in a Disney-Pixar park setting. As you can tell by the title, it’s a video game for the Xbox 360 Kinect system. Kinect Rush (Microsoft ) is available now with a list price of $49.99. However, you can currently purchase it for $29.99 on Amazon.

Review: 3D Math Racing Pro App for Apple iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad

POTG Apps sent me a promo code to review their 3D Math Racing Pro app on my dad blog. This is one of those educational app that quizzes your kid with math problems. In the app, your car gets a speed boost each time you get a math problem right. The app makes math fun and hopefully will improve your child’s math skills. 3D Math Racing Pro is available now in the iTunes app store. The app is compatible with Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad devices. It requires iOS 5.0 or later.

Video Game Review: Angry Birds Trilogy for the Xbox Kinect

Angry Birds (Activision) is now available on the Xbox 360, Sony Playstation, and Nintendo 3DS. I saw the Xbox Kinect version at the library and checked it out last week. I’ve only played the iPod version a couple of times, but I like the Xbox version better. The video game has been optimized for high-resolution screens. As a result, Angry Birds looks more impressive on our TV than on my little iPod. My kids love the new version too. The Xbox version of the Angry Birds Trilogy retails for $39.99.

Review: OnPage Smartphone Pager App for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Blackberry, and Android Devices

I recently downloaded the OnPage app (Onset Technology). The mobile app essentially turns your smartphone into a pager. It’s pretty neat and is a very handy tool for dads and moms. I tested the app on my Apple iPod Touch and it works great. However, the iPod Touch isn’t an ideal device because you need to be able to connect to the Internet 24×7. Otherwise, you won’t receive the alerts when someone is trying to contact you. The Onset Technology app works better with iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, and Android devices.

Educational DVD Review: Little Pim Portuguese Digital Download

Over the weekend, I tested out Little Pim’s new Brazilian Portuguese video product via digital download. I’m not a big fan of watching movies on a tiny mobile device, but I do find the format convenient for kids. Devices like iPhone, iPod, iPad, and Android tablets are just the right size for children. And with digital downloads, you can also watch the videos on your computer’s big screen.

No Starch Press sent me a copy of their Super Scratch Programming Adventure! book for review on my geek dad blog. It’s a book about the Scratch educational programming language. Scratch, which is a graphical programming language developed by MIT’s Media Lab, helps children create interactive games, stories, music, and art by combining blocks of code. It’s a great learning language because kids don’t have to deal with the cryptic syntaxes found in most programming languages. The programming language is used by millions of first-time programmers worldwide.

Review: Mobile Banking Apps – I love e-deposits

I finally got around to installing a couple of mobile banking apps on my Apple iPod Touch. Mobile banking apps have been around for a while, but I never found a need to install them because I prefer to do online banking on my desktop computer. Until now. That’s when my credit union announced they were offering e-deposit via a smartphone. Cool. I hate making a special trip to the bank just to deposit a check or two.

Scholastic Media sent me the new I Spy DS Game Pack for review on my geek dad blog. If you’ve read the I Spy books or played other I Spy games, then you know this video game involves finding objects on a list. The Nintendo DS game pack features two video games: I Spy Universe and I Spy Fun House. The games are not adrenaline pumping, but they are challenging and can keep your kids busy for hours (and maybe days). That’s a good thing, right?

Review: Whiz Racer Android App – it’s a fun math game for kids

Enigma Games sent me an evaluation version of their new Whiz Racer game for review on my geek dad blog. The racing video game isn’t really a racing game at all. It’s actually an educational game in a race car setting. It could just as easily been an archery game because the main objective of Whiz Racer is solving math problems. The setting just makes the the app more interesting for kids. Whiz Racer is currently available for Android devices for $2.99. Versions for iOS, PC and Mac platforms will be coming soon.

Review: WebMD App – it’s like carrying a medical book in your pocket

This week, I’ve been playing with the WebMD app. It’s not a new app, but it is very useful. As you can tell by the name, the app provides medical information. I found the app very helpful and easy to use. It’s full of great information. The app is free. However, it’s ad supported. But for the most part, I didn’t really notice the ads. The WebMD app is compatible with the Apple iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad (requires iOS 3.0 or later). I tested the app on my iPod touch, but you’re better off installing the app on an iPad or iPhone because you need Internet access for most of the features.

Chuggington: Be Safe! App Review

Ludorum and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently announced the Chuggington: Be Safe! app. It’s the first official traffic safety app for parents and children. The free app should appeal to young children — especially if they are fans of the Chuggington series. The goal of the Chuggington: Be Safe! app is to help teach children important traffic safety lessons. The educational app works with Apple iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices (iOS 4.0 or later).

Lantronix xPrintServer – Home Edition for iPad, iPhone, iPod

Lantronix recently announced the xPrintServer – Home Edition, which enables printing from Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch devices. xPrintServer – Home Edition supports up to eight USB printers and up to two network printers. xPrintServer – Home Edition isn’t currently available. However, you can pre-order the gadget. According to the press material, the device will begin shipping later this month.

Review: Shake-N-Tell App – it’s for story telling

Earlier in the week, I checked out the Shake-N-Tell app (Your Name In Cows). It’s a storytelling app for the Apple iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad (iOS 4.0 or later). The free app is designed to help dads and moms tell bedtime stories. Let’s face it. At the end of the day, we’re not exactly at our creative best. And when you’re tired, it can be a little difficult to make up a story on the spot. This is when the Shake-N-Tell app comes in handy.

Review: Imbroglio App – it’s interesting and free

I was playing with the Imbroglio app (Lisbon Lab) last night. It’s a puzzle game for the Apple iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad (iOS 4.3 or later). In this game, you’re on the magical Ombelico Islands. On these islands are Lithos, which are mystical stone cylinders that channel the elemental energy and maintain the harmony between air, water, earth and fire. Everything is fine on the islands until a tsunami ravages the islands and leaves all the Lithos scrambled. Now it’s your job to solve this imbroglio and save the Ombelico Island from obliteration.

Tactile Layer is the best of both worlds – a touch screen with real buttons

Tactus Technology has an interesting new technology, Tactile Layer, that can create dynamic physical buttons that users can actually see and feel in advance of entering data into the device. When the physical keyboard is no longer needed, the buttons recede back into invisibility. Isn’t that cool? I can’t wait until it’s available on smartphones. I hate typing on a mobile device. Even though I have small fingers, I still have trouble typing on a smartphone. The letters are just too close together. While Tactile Layer won’t make a keyboard larger, I think the tactile buttons will make it easier to press the right letter.

App Review: Math Guardians Mini – turns something boring to fun

I received a promo code to review the new Math Guardians Mini app on my dad blog. The app makes math fun by putting it in a game setting. In Math Guardians Mini, you have to solve math problems while creatures attack you. If you take too much time, the creature wins. The creatures consist of dinosaurs, dragons, and other beasts. Math Guardians Mini app, developed by Jiayi Chong, is available now in the Apple Appstore for $1.99. It’s compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation and higher), and iPad (requires iOS 5.0 or later). The game is aimed at kids ages eight and up (including adults).

App Review: Rocka Bowling 3D – it’s fun and free

I’ve been playing with an app called Rocka Bowling 3D. It’s a fun app by Best Cool Fun Games [Facebook | Twitter]. As you can tell by the name of the app, it’s a bowling game. The app reminds me a little of the bowling game in Wii Sports. But instead of using a Wii controller, you swipe with your finger to roll the bowling ball. Rocka Bowling 3D is available now in the Apple AppStore. It’s compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad (requires iOS 4.1 or later). Note: there is also a Google Android version, which was actually developed first.
