Pi. I remember having a fight in the projects area of my classroom when I was around 6 or 7 with a guy named Colin because he wouldn’t accept that Pi existed. We’d just spent an hour measuring the various parts of a circle, with our teacher telling us to think of the circles as pies because Pi was what it was all about.

Colin decided that not only was Pi not a constant (because it MUST be bigger if the circle is bigger - it’s obvious), but that even if it was there’s no way his calculator couldn’t work it out. I seem to recall a few years later he was equally annoying about half lifes.

Anyway. We’re planning a geek date for the next Pi day, all having been too busy working to do anything on the 14th March. So July 22nd it is. Tell us your plans. It’s nice to have a european format geekdate from time to time. Shows everyone is sophisticated and worldly. The only appropriate way to celebrate is to eat some pie. The finest pie in the UK is available from the Royal Mile Tavern in Edinburgh. A glorious old fashioned shortcrust steak and Guinness pie of extraordinary flavour. So that’s venue option #1 for the Scottish contingent.

Oh, in case your mental arithmatic isn’t that quick, 22/7 is an approximation of Pi from the old days.

Soon we will be running a contest to find Mr Geekdates and Miss Geekdates to be the faces and mascots of the geekdates world, featuring on the site welcoming new members, delivering site news, and generally making everyone happy.

Myspace has them, mybloglog has them, youtube has them. So should we.

Rather than buy some images, or randomly grab some CC snaps, we thought it would be fun to open this one up to the happy geeks out there. Something interesting for your Resume!

Even though we’re geeks, we’re still pretty shallow, so to enter simply send us some photos.

But lets make this more interesting.

The easy route would be to tag photos on Flickr ‘geekdates’ or write technorati covered posts tagged ‘mrgeekdates’ or ‘missgeekdates’ or find some other clever way to draw our attention your way. The more obscure and circuitous the better.

Think of it as a corruption of the Wired oddly addresses and wierdly shaped package.

We’ll pick a shortlist from the entrants for member vote.

The prize? You mean being the star of a website not good enough for you? We’re working on the prize. Remember, this is just early warning to give you time to take some pics!

By way of explaining geekdates some Random Dude interviews Mr Geekdates about the site:

Random dude: What’s a geekdate?
Mr Geekdates: A geekdate is a date that provides enjoyment to geeks. The top geekdate of the summer will be the seventh of July.

Why?
Write it down. 07.07.07. It’s simple, but it’s beautiful. It’s a geekdate.

Okay, I get it, but so what!
So on a geekdate we want to encourage geeks and geekfans to head out into the world and meet up on geekdates. Anything from going to a gig that happens to be on the 07.07.07 (or any other geekdate) with a few hundred more geeks to taking your favourite geek out for a nice meal.

Sounds okay. I don’t have to wear a stupid ‘I’m on a geekdate’ Tshirt do I?
No.

You sure?
Well, you can if you WANT to.

Sweet!
Anything else you need to know?

This isn’t a dating site is it?
No. Although I’m sure some couples will get together through our pages we’re more about the bigger gatherings of like minded posses of geeks.

How much is this gonna cost me?
Nothing. Geekdates is free. It’s fun not business. We are trying to keep everything under a Creative Commons so you can take parts of it away for free too.
