Thanks to everyone for the outpouring of email I’ve received. I will answer them all, it must may take me a while. Several questions have come through, though, and I wanted to address them here.

1) Will you stop doing Murcaching?

Nope. I stopped Geek Fu because I didn’t have the time or energy to put into it: Murcaching doesn’t take as much of either.

2) Why can’t I comment here?

Now that I honestly don’t know. Some were able to comment. Some weren’t. Sorry about that, I don’t know what’s going on.

Of course, when I planned on writing this, I had more stuff in mind to write, but now I am blank. Thanks again to everyone, and I’m doing OK, really.

* If it’s your first time in a hotel, know that tipping the maids is customary. It’s good to go $2 a day, more if you’re a total slob, you host a party, someone horks and misses the toilet, etc. Although it’s convienient to tip all at once when you’re leaving, try to remember to tip every day, since different maids might clean your room at different days (esp. since weekends and weekday staff may be different.) Maids are trained to avoid everything in the room as if it were plagued so that they won’t be accused of stealing, so you can put it in an envelope on the pillow, attach a note, etc. The pillow is a very good place to leave a tip, since you’re unlikely to leave money there by accident, unless it fell out of your ear or something.

* Try not to drink too much on the last night. You don’t want to be traveling with a hangover. Moreover, you don’t want to be driving with a hangover.

* Sex: a friend of mine says if you can’t get laid at DragonCon, you’re not really trying. However, keep in mind common sense: use protection, be courteous to your roommate, and if you’re in a relationship and your SO isn’t at the con, don’t be an idiot. Lastly, when I was in college at a safe sex seminar, I laughed at the advice, “Always know the last name of anyone you sleep with,” but then later realized that some people don’t even bother finding that part out. Think: if you a) get pregnant, b) get an STD, c) fall head over beer in love, you might want to get in touch with them again.

* Like the girl scouts say, make new friends but keep the old. You’ll want to go with friends, but don’t be afraid to branch out and have coffee, beer, dinner with someone new. Having con experiences with only your safe friends from home isn’t really a con experience. But Lordy, don’t invite yourself anywhere - invite others along with you, and if they say they’re doing something else, don’t tag along.

* Again with the common sense: Don’t be rude to people. If you’re rude to a stranger, they might be your favorite author, podcaster, or the sister of the person you slept with last night (didja get that last name like I recommended?) Even worse, they might be an up-and-coming assistant to an agent who has an elephant-like memory who will remember you when you query them in 5 years, completely ignorant of their animosity toward you. True story - in my last job, I turned down a salesman trying to get me to buy advertising on his website. He wrote back to his boss that I was just a young idiot - and accidentally copied me. Six or so years later, he’s still in my database as someone never to work with.

* More con advice from Making Light.

* Con advice for writers from Sherwood Smith. - And additions to that from Michelle Sagara.

* Really, focus on two things: common sense and fun. People are putting on this show as a labor of love; thank them for their work. The maids make crap wages in cleaning up after your ass; tip them. No one likes an asshole; don’t be one. You have spent hundreds of dollars for this trip; have fun!

Hello all!

No Heaven this week, but a guest essay about Firefly. I have made the move to Farpoint Media and therefore had to rename all the files and make sure all the ID3 tags were happy. This… took a long time. During this tedium, I discovered that three podcasts are outside the normal numbering mechanism. So in order to make the track numbers and episode numbers match up, I’ve leapt ahead in the numbering to cause this to be #67. You haven’t miss anything. Trust me.

My mom, Donna, joins me to discuss Passover, sci-fi, and she wants podcasting and sci-fi book recommendations.

No Stretch Breaks in Hell

Got back from vacation to hear “hey, didn’t I tell you, your deadline is Friday” when I already had a deadline on Friday. So I’ve been stressed. Podcasts have suffered.

Then today I got another email, “Oh, can you make it Thursday instead? If not, then first thing Friday is fine.” [emphasis mine]

See, maybe it’s the RPG writer in me, but I tend to believe that when the assignment is due on Friday, that means the end of the day on Friday, meaning I have Friday to work on it. Sigh.

Late nights. No game night (for me). Late podcats. Very very sad.

I just got an email from lulu.com that my CD’s won’t work because they are mono and they require stereo.

They did not tell me they required stereo files when I made the CD’s.

So whoever tried to order them - please email me privately and I’ll burn you the CD’s you want. They won’t have pretty artwork, but at least you’ll get them…

Kinda disjointed this podcast. I break my promise about this being my last geek music podcast, but I make it up to you guys who don’t like the music by a) playing it at the end and b) not cheating you out of the essay, which is about Douglas Adams.

The deal with the music is that the Phenomenauts need money - they had their bus do very bad things in Nebraska, which Mike Mennenga tells me is a horror in itself. They are now suffering from several thousands of dollars in repair bills. They and the Epoxies cannot continue the second leg of their tour without these repairs. So, they need help. And I and my sponsor, Split Reason, are willing to reward you for your generosity.

The essay made it into the MP3 file completely unedited, so sorry about that. I’ve fixed it. I’m not going to post it as a new enclosure, but if you want to download a fresh copy, you are free to do so.

I do NOT have RSS-fu, and am unsure how to get the old file out of my feed. I’m hoping it will update on its own. I have noticed the RSS seems to lag behind if I ever edit it. Multiple apologies for all the confusion, especially if you download two copies of the podcast…

For about the last 12 years, I have celebrated my brithday along with Jason from Random Signal, his birthday being July 19 and mine the 25th. We celebrate the 6 days that we are the same age. Not once have I celebrated the fact that, for four days after that, I am the same age as Wil Wheaton.

This must stop.

So happy birthday, Wil, enjoy 33 and I’ll see you there next July 25.
