Kenzer and Company has launched a crowdfunding campaign for HackMaster 25th Anniversary Edition (HackMaster XXV), marking a significant milestone for a title that helped define the early 2000s old-school revival movement. The project, which seeks to formalise twenty-five years of rule refinements, has already surpassed its initial £7,433 funding target, attracting over 485 backers with more than 34 days remaining in the campaign.

This new edition centres on a “Core Quartet” of hardback rulebooks: the Player Character Codex, Player’s Guide to Adventuring, Hacklopedia of Beasts, and GameMaster’s Guide. Each volume is designed as a premium collector’s item, featuring tooled-basilisk and gorgon faux-leather bindings, gold foil stamping, and integrated bookmark ribbons. The mechanical scope of HackMaster XXV introduces streamlined skill systems, rebalanced core attributes, expanded species options such as Half-Ogres and Gnomelings, and a completely new social engagement framework.

Mechanics and Design Philosophy

While HackMaster maintains its reputation for tactical rigour and second-by-second combat resolution, this anniversary release aims to reduce the barrier to entry without softening the lethality of the game world. The development team has overhauled the proficiency and talent systems to ensure high-target rolls remain consistent across all skill checks. According to the campaign documentation, the goal is to bridge the gap between classic “zero-to-hero” progression and modern tactical play.

Kenzer and Company, which has maintained continuous operation and published Knights of the Dinner Table since 1993, is managing this release with a focus on supply chain stability. To avoid the logistical complexities often associated with overseas manufacturing, the publisher has confirmed that all printing for the physical editions will take place domestically.

Tabletop roleplaying games and speculative sci-fi have long wrestled with the concept of synthetic labour. Whether it is a sleek synthetic synth serving drinks in a dystopian cyberpunk sprawling metropolis or a rogue construct turning on its creators, automated service is one of speculative fiction’s most reliable tropes. However, as agentic AI and advanced robotics move steadily from tabletop sourcebooks into actual modern workplaces, the questions surrounding automation have shifted from distant hypothetical scenarios to immediate personal realities.

At this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, British actor, character comedian, and former professional butler Mike McAlpine takes on this exact transition in his solo comedy show, The RemAIns of the Butler. Drawing directly from his real-world background as a graduate of the prestigious Ivor Spencer Butler School, McAlpine dons the tailcoat once again to play Head Butler Michael McAlpine. Set inside Kirklevington Hall, the show follows Michael and his companion Mickey as their employer introduces a humanoid robot to the estate, forcing a traditional manservant to confront what white-glove service truly means in an age of mechanisation.

We caught up with Mike McAlpine to talk about the human nuances that algorithms cannot replicate, how his show subverts sci-fi tropes, and why an eccentric human butler will always deliver the better story.

The “The RemAIns of the Butler” Interview

You actually trained as a professional butler at the Ivor Spencer Butler School. What is the most ‘human’ element of that training that you think a humanoid robot or agentic AI could never replicate?

I think the difference in the training was truly the human aspect of it all. Mr. Spencer and his sidekick at the time, Don Weedon taught us with such care and concern for the employer’s practical needs, but also their emotional needs. Although they impressed upon us, we should not get involved in relationships with the employer emotionally, the keyword was observation but never giving them the feeling they were being observed. These two gentlemen had lived such interesting lives, that their teaching was filled with interesting anecdotes, ranging from the many royal events they had worked at to simple tasks in ordinary households. Role-playing played a major part, which encourage the human aspect. Placing oneself in a variety of situations that may arise within a household, and recognising the needs of the employer. From welcoming guests, serving at table to organising a theatre outing and ensuring their greatest comfort and smooth entrance to any event without them having to make any effort themselves. Judging the employer’s needs by observing their behaviour and emotional state, those nuances, are clearly the aspects in which the human butler is still streets ahead of their robotic counterpart.

Tabletop roleplaying games (Cyberpunk, Shadowrun) have long featured robotic servants, but they are usually portrayed as silent, emotionless utilities or rogue threats. Your show treats the humanoid robot as a threat to a butler’s identity. How does Michael’s existential crisis compare to how sci-fi usually treats automation?

I suppose my creation of the character, Mr. Jenkins, the robot, has automatically been influenced by robots I have read about or seen in film before. I bore in mind the fact that AI is potentially insidious and ultimately could present a threat to humanity. There are elements to this in Jenkins, which clearly surprise butler McAlpine and increasingly worry him. Moments where it is suggested robot Jenkins has an ability to think and react instinctively. These moments, however, are more playful in The Remains of the Butler. At one point, Jenkins suggests eradicating the threat of a drunken guest by removing him beyond the city limits and reintroducing to the ecosystem. In a swiftly mimed sequence it is clear he is suggesting the inebriated gentlemen should be punished with death and buried in a clandestine manoevre. Comical at that moment but hopefully chilling, when you really think about it. Jenkins has a cheeky aspect to him, which increases the rivalry between him and the established head Butler Mr. McAlpine. The robot’s suggestion of playing back audio recordings of a lady guest’s nighttime flatulence to the audience is subversive, but clearly the kind of comical aspect I enjoy exploring. That kind of thing titillates me. Naughty but worrying if extrapolated two largest spheres.

You are a British actor based in Germany who performs in both languages. Have you noticed a difference in how British and German audiences react to the concept of AI taking over traditional human roles?

I’m afraid I don’t have much knowledge of how British audiences react to the AI takeover. I’m hoping to glean some knowledge of that during my Edinburgh run. Edinburgh is actually my world premiere of The Remains of the Butler, so I have as yet to receive any audience reactions anywhere. However, AI is a regular conversation piece in Germany, especially among friends and colleagues. I know a number of voice artists and actors, who have clearly been hugely affected by the introduction of AI. Voice over work is something which provides good earnings compared to theatre: formerly financial backing for the creation of theatrical productions. The economic fallout of these jobs disappearing to AI are becoming very obvious as time goes by. I also worked for many years has a translator German to English. Those jobs have fallen by the wayside also due to AI. Not a career I would recommend to a young person!

Your show introduces Mickey, an ‘Under-Under Butler’. In game terms, we’d call him a classic companion character. How does his relationship with Michael shift when a literal, perfect machine enters the workplace?

Initially Mickey is excited about the prospect of a robot in the house. He is amazed at its ability, him being an innocent. Mickey takes Jenkins at face value and befriends the robot, giving him an honest insight into the workings of the household, Kirklevington Hall, their workplace. He introduces Jenkins to the children of the house and playfully instructs him, prompting knowledge regarding all kinds of historical activities and games. However, he is forced to consider the situation despite his innocence. Mr. McAlpine is his mentor and he weighs up the situation, recognizing the immense human value his boss has. This is summed up in Mickey’s Poem “ What makes a great Butler?” This is a moment of realisation which underlines the significance of the role of the servant: not subordination but, when done correctly, an observant, discreet and dignified presence, ensuring smooth operation and client satisfaction involving selflessness, and personal consideration. The suggestion is that a robot perhaps would not have the necessary human touch to react to the situations sensed in people’s body language or aura.

If a wealthy employer offered you a choice between a perfectly programmed, tireless robot butler and a deeply eccentric, slightly flawed human butler, which one makes for a better story?

The eccentric butler certainly makes for a better story, especially as in the world of comic theatre, the characters can be highly exaggerated. This of course, also applies to the role of a robot in theatre, as unexpected traits are introduced for their character too, as long as one does not stray too far from the realms of reality. It all depends on where one wants to draw the borderlines. The closer to reality the characters remain, the more potentially chilling or meaningful the action. I suppose I meander in the middle ground.

Automated bot networks allow unproven projects or mediocre board games to manufacture community enthusiasm, risking financial losses for backers and independent retailers who rely on online metrics to gauge genuine interest.

Tabletop roleplaying games and board gaming flagship UK Games Expo secured seventh place overall with 5,400 monthly searches, ranking above well-known commercial gatherings such as the London Book Fair (3,600 searches) and World Travel Market London (2,400 searches).

Fan Culture Meets Mainstream Expos

The numbers demonstrate how geek conventions have moved into the mainstream public consciousness. While agricultural and horticultural events like the Chelsea Flower Show and dog show Crufts (22,200 searches) hold strong traditional appeal, fan gatherings now draw equal digital interest.

Brand Footprints and Regional Geography

Understanding the figures requires looking at event structures. MCM Comic Con is not a single annual expo held in one venue. It operates as a brand holding multiple large shows throughout the year across different cities, including London and Birmingham. Combining search interest for a national brand umbrella naturally inflates overall figures compared to single-location shows like UK Games Expo, which takes place exclusively at the NEC in Birmingham.

The data also illustrates a clear geographic divide in British event hosting. Former Google Senior Software Engineer Irene Woo is stepping away from tech stack optimisation to perform her debut solo comedy show, Golden Child, at the 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Running at The Mash House throughout August, the show explores the reality of walking away from a six-figure Silicon Valley salary, Asian eldest daughter expectations, and the cultural shift from corporate stability to live performance.

Every August, Edinburgh transforms into the world’s largest arts festival, bringing tens of thousands of performers across comedy, theatre, and interactive entertainment to Scotland’s capital. For programmers, developers, and tabletop RPG enthusiasts, Woo’s transition from high-level software engineering to full-time stand-up hits close to home. In this Q&A, Woo discusses A/B testing jokes, escaping the golden handcuffs of tech, and how a Type-A engineer handles game mastering a tabletop session.

As a former Senior Software Engineer at Google, maybe your day job was about finding bugs and fixing logical errors. When you’re testing new material in a comedy cellar, do you find yourself treating the audience’s silence as a code error that needs to be systematically debugged?

I find an audience’s silence a lot more brutal than getting a “segmentation fault” error. They are similar in the sense that you have to persevere, work hard, and try different things until you can fix your joke or your code error. But in stand-up, you’re ultimately building a human connection with the audience. The more present and in-the-moment you are, the more your jokes land. On the other hand, making deep eye contact with your code won’t fix your null pointer exception and it might burn your retinas.

Coding is entirely governed by rigid, literal rules. Stand-up, like good tabletop game design, requires setting up constraints and then subverting them. How much did your engineering background prepare you for understanding the structural ‘math’ behind a joke?

Through engineering, I learned about A/B testing, which is essentially what you’re doing when you’re trying different versions of a joke. I wouldn’t say going to engineering school taught me how to construct well-crafted jokes, but it taught me perseverance. I remember working on assignments late in the night until I could finally fix my code, and similarly some jokes take months before they make an audience truly laugh.

Similar to math, jokes have structure, but the biggest difference is that emotions carry jokes. Engineering can sometimes strip you out of your emotions to focus on the facts, the numbers, the “correctness”. It took me a while to identify my emotions and be in tune with them, and I’m still working on it to become a better comedian.

The RPG community is packed with programmers, developers, and tech workers who often feel the weight of those ‘golden handcuffs’ you talk about in Golden Child. What was the exact moment you realised that the comfort of tech stability was holding back your creative drive?

Early 2025, I resolved to dedicate myself to stand-up as much as possible after work. I suddenly had no free time. I was irritable, stressed, and constantly felt behind. After March, I took a break from stand-up for my sake (and the sake of everyone else in my life). That’s when I realized I would never be able to make meaningful progress in comedy as long as I had a full-time job. I just did not have enough time to do both well and given my (slightly intense) personality, I’d rather quit than to phone it in.

You’ve described yourself as a classic Type-A eldest daughter. If you were running a tabletop RPG campaign, would your style of Game Mastering be meticulously planned and over-prepared, or do you let the chaos of the players take over?

As a Type-A eldest daughter, you’ll have to explain what “chaos” means. Of course the game would be meticulously planned and over-prepared. That’s how I operate 90% of the time, and the remaining 10% is when I’m asleep.

Silicon Valley loves to talk about ‘disruption’ and ‘failing fast.’ Now that you’ve experienced the raw, immediate failure of a joke occasionally flatlining on stage, do you think tech culture actually understands what real risk-taking feels like?

I think pockets of Silicon Valley can understand what real risk-taking feels like. For example, entrepreneurs carry a significant amount of risk. But in parts of tech, directives from up high (leadership, your manager, etc..), legal constraints, and budget constraints can limit how much risk you’re even able to take. And recent layoffs make you feel like “failing fast” changed to “fail once and you’re out”.

But I think everyone in Silicon Valley would say stand-up is inherently more risky than working in tech because it involves one of engineers’s deepest, darkest fear: public speaking.

LucasArts’ strategy game buried its best ideas beneath too many windows, but few Star Wars games have ever been better at turning systems, characters and failed plans into stories.

Most Star Wars games give you a role.

You are a Jedi, a pilot, a soldier or the unusually energetic owner of several lightsabers who has been told to destroy everything between two checkpoints.

Star Wars: Rebellion gave you a campaign.

Released for Windows in 1998 and known as Star Wars: Supremacy in the United Kingdom and Ireland, the game placed the entire Galactic Civil War under the player’s control. The Rebels had to survive, build political support and hide their headquarters. The Empire had to exploit its enormous military advantage while locating an enemy that refused to fight conventionally.

Between those objectives sat a galaxy of diplomats, spies, prisoners, traitors, production queues, secret missions and planetary populations whose loyalties could not always be secured with a Star Destroyer.

Our full historical examination of Star Wars: Rebellion covers the sprawling mechanics and famously awkward interface in detail. But the game’s most interesting achievement was not its scale.

It was the way those systems behaved like a tabletop campaign without a human game master.

The films established the setting.

The players created the story.

Canon Was Only the Starting Situation

Most licensed games are built around events that must happen.

The Death Star must be destroyed. Hoth must fall. Luke must confront Vader. Han Solo must eventually discover that carbonite is a terrible long-term storage solution.

Rebellion begins shortly after the Battle of Yavin and then quietly abandons the script.

The Rebel headquarters appears somewhere along the Galactic Rim. Neutral systems begin with uncertain loyalties. Famous characters are scattered across the war effort, while ships, troops and facilities must be built according to the situation developing inside that particular campaign.

Luke may travel to Dagobah and become a Jedi, but he might spend the following months conducting diplomacy rather than immediately flying towards Bespin.

Leia may be captured while negotiating with a planet that never appeared in the films.

Darth Vader may spend years supervising espionage operations because the Empire has absolutely no idea where the Rebel base is hiding.

The game does not recreate the original trilogy.

It asks what might happen if its characters, factions and conflicts were placed on the table and allowed to move.

That idea has always been central to Star Wars tabletop roleplaying. Geek Native’s feature on how West End Games helped build the Star Wars galaxy shows how the franchise expanded when writers and players were given room to explore everything outside the camera’s frame.

Rebellion applies the same principle to the Galactic Civil War itself.

Canon supplies the sourcebook.

The simulation runs the campaign.

The Computer Becomes the Game Master

A tabletop game master does more than reveal a plot.

They maintain the world while players are looking elsewhere. Factions pursue their own goals. Rumours may be true, false or dangerously outdated. Non-player characters act according to motives the party cannot immediately see.

Rebellion attempts to perform those functions through systems.

Imperial and Rebel characters travel across the galaxy on missions involving diplomacy, espionage, sabotage, abduction, research and rescue. Success depends on ability, local conditions, opposing agents and whatever private malice the random-number generator has developed that evening.

The result is not a polished scripted narrative.

It is emergent storytelling.

Geek Native’s discussion of storytelling across computer games and tabletop RPGs describes emergent stories as player-driven events created through interacting systems rather than a predetermined sequence.

That could almost serve as Rebellion’s design document.

The game does not need a cutscene showing Han Solo’s capture. It sends him on an espionage mission, calculates the outcome and informs you that the Empire has caught him.

The story begins when you decide what to do next.

Do you risk Leia on a rescue attempt?

Send a less valuable operative?

Create a diversion elsewhere?

Accept that Han may spend the next several months experiencing Imperial hospitality while the Alliance concentrates on something more important?

The mechanics produce the incident.

The player supplies its meaning.

The Two Factions Are Running Different Campaigns

The Empire and Rebel Alliance use many of the same systems, but they do not experience the same war.

The Empire begins with military strength, industrial infrastructure and a publicly known centre of power. It can occupy planets, build enormous fleets and eventually construct another Death Star.

Its problem is information.

The Rebel headquarters is hidden and can be relocated. The Empire may control half the galaxy while still having no reliable idea where the campaign’s primary objective is located.

Playing the Empire feels like running a powerful but overstretched faction in a political sandbox. Every system must be watched. Every rumour of Rebel activity demands attention. Every fleet sent towards one sector leaves another slightly more vulnerable.

The Alliance begins weaker but more flexible.

Its characters are valuable, its headquarters is mobile and diplomacy matters more than direct conquest. A single successful mission can reveal an Imperial weakness, shift a planet’s loyalty or remove an important facility without requiring a fleet battle.

This is asymmetry in the tabletop sense.

The factions are not merely using different miniatures with slightly altered statistics. They approach the campaign through different assumptions.

The Empire asks, “Where are they?”

The Alliance asks, “How long can we remain somewhere before they find us?”

That distinction gives the same galactic map two completely different moods.

Characters Are More Than Units

One of Rebellion’s smartest decisions is refusing to treat famous characters as unusually powerful soldiers.

Luke, Leia, Han, Mon Mothma, Vader and Palpatine are strategic participants. They negotiate, spy, research, recruit, command and rescue.

Assigning them therefore resembles managing a tabletop party during downtime.

Leia may be your best diplomat, but sending her to secure another neutral planet means she cannot simultaneously help rescue a captured ally.

Vader may be devastating as a fleet commander, but he is also one of the Empire’s best tools for hunting Rebel operatives and identifying Force-sensitive characters.

Every assignment creates an opportunity cost.

The question is not merely whether Luke can complete a mission.

It is whether this is the mission Luke should be doing while everything else continues moving.

Minor characters can also become unexpectedly important.

An obscure operative may repeatedly succeed where famous heroes fail. A relatively forgettable Imperial officer may expose the Rebel headquarters. Someone recruited as a temporary solution can gradually become essential to the entire campaign.

Tabletop players recognise this immediately.

The NPC introduced to deliver one piece of information becomes the group’s favourite character.

The backup plan becomes the campaign.

The person nobody expected to survive becomes the hero everyone remembers.

Planetary Loyalty Makes the Galaxy Feel Populated

Conquering a planet does not necessarily mean its population supports you.

Systems possess political loyalties that can be changed through diplomacy, military occupation, uprisings and the wider progress of the war. A planet controlled by force may require troops simply to prevent rebellion.

That turns territory into more than coloured space on a map.

Planets become communities whose cooperation cannot always be assumed.

The Empire can occupy a hostile system, but doing so may consume resources and create instability. The Alliance can persuade neutral worlds to join without firing a shot, but diplomacy requires time and exposes valuable characters.

This resembles a good sandbox campaign, where locations are not merely stages waiting for the players to arrive.

They contain factions, attitudes and consequences.

Geek Native’s examination of what makes a sandbox work argues that player freedom requires more than an open map. The world must respond meaningfully enough for choices to create stories.

Rebellion’s galaxy responds constantly.

A destroyed fleet affects political confidence.

A captured leader may weaken a faction.

A Death Star can terrify populations into obedience, but destroying a planet can turn the wider galaxy against the Empire.

Even the largest weapon ever built cannot escape the campaign’s reputation system.

Failure Creates the Best Stories

The tactical space battles were supposed to be the spectacle.

They remain impressive in concept, but the controls are awkward and fleet composition often matters more than anything the player does once combat begins.

The real drama occurs elsewhere.

It lives in the failed sabotage mission that exposes an agent.

The diplomat captured on a world that was almost ready to join your side.

The rescue attempt that creates another prisoner.

The Imperial fleet sent across the galaxy because intelligence reported a Rebel base that had already moved.

These moments are not necessarily enjoyable when they occur.

They are excellent five minutes later when you begin explaining them to someone else.

That is a familiar tabletop phenomenon.

A perfectly executed plan is satisfying.

A disastrous plan that somehow creates three new problems, a recurring villain and a desperate rescue mission is a story.

Rebellion understood that campaign history is often built from failure.

Its systems repeatedly create situations no writer would have selected for a clean cinematic narrative. They are too inconvenient, too anticlimactic or too absurdly dependent on timing.

That is precisely why they feel personal.

The Interface Was the Overloaded Character Sheet

Unfortunately, Rebellion attempted to contain this campaign inside one of the most intimidating interfaces LucasArts ever released.

The player manages maps, fleets, characters, messages, production, research, planetary defences and missions through overlapping windows and a constant stream of droid reports.

It feels less like commanding the Rebel Alliance and more like operating its internal administration software.

Every tabletop campaign eventually develops paperwork.

Character sheets become crowded. Notes spread across the table. The game master owns three folders and still cannot remember where the important map went.

Rebellion begins at that stage.

Its interface is the binder nobody organised.

That problem damaged the game in 1998 and remains the largest barrier to enjoying it now. The campaign underneath the windows is fascinating, but reaching it requires patience, a manual and a willingness to accept that C-3PO has once again interrupted a military crisis to report the completion of another refinery.

The design was not too complex to become a game.

It was too complex for the interface tasked with explaining it.

A Campaign Generator Disguised as Grand Strategy

Across the complete history of Star Wars video games, Rebellion remains an anomaly.

Later strategy games presented clearer battles and more accessible galactic maps. RPGs offered richer dialogue and stronger character development. Tabletop systems gave players more freedom to inhabit their own roles.

None combined those ideas in quite the same way.

Rebellion was not especially good at telling one Star Wars story.

It was excellent at generating hundreds of smaller ones.

A hidden headquarters discovered too late.

A diplomat who changed the political balance.

A failed mission that became a rescue campaign.

A minor character who somehow carried the Rebellion while Luke Skywalker was sitting in an Imperial prison.

That is why the game still inspires affection despite its interface, pacing and mechanical roughness.

It did not simply let players control Star Wars characters.

It gave them factions, locations, conflicts and uncertain outcomes, then trusted them to recognise the story emerging from the table.

Star Wars: Rebellion was a tabletop campaign trapped inside a 1998 PC game.

The tragedy is that its greatest enemy was not the Empire.

It was Windows.
