After the success of our Zombieland screening back in February, we are teaming up with Shmitten Kitten and our friends over at The Trocadero, for another Movie Monday event. This time we will be showing our favorite faux 70s Blaxploitation flick Black Dynamite!

The party kicks off on Monday, April 26th at 6:30pm. The event will be 21+ and a mere $3. Not only does that $3 go towards a drink, but get there before 7pm and get a free bag of popcorn as well. In case you never heard of the film (shame on you!), the over-the-top plot goes something like this:

Black Dynamite is a seamless recreation (it was even shot on 16mm!) of 70’s Blaxploitation classics staring Michael Jai White (Spawn) as the ex-CIA, Vietnam Veteran, Kung-fu master and ultimate badass Black Dynamite. In a solid nod to the genre “The Man” has not only killed Black Dynamite’s brother, but is pumping heroin into the local orphanage, and has even flooded the ghetto with a secret weapon disguised as common malt liquor. Of course Black Dynamite is the only one who can stop him and get revenge for the death of his brother.

To keep the 70’s vibe of Black Dynamite going all night long at the Troc, we are going to have a costume contest, with prizes for the person with the most decade correct apparel. And after the screening, you can look forward to a 70’s disco dance party hosted by Shmitten Kitten, all for $3!

Black Dynamite wasn’t in theaters very long and I can’t wait to see this film on the big screen. So come out, watch a film with the geeks at Geekadelphia, and party with all the cuties from Shmitten Kitten.

We’ve got a Facebook event page. Feel free to RSVP, and let us know you’re coming.

See ya there!

The Fiesta Movement has truly been living up to its name with the whirlwind of activity we’ve been up to in the past few weeks.

On Friday, April 2nd we’ll be upstairs on the loft of North Bowl celebrating our first mission. For mission one, we had to compile a list of local places that we found exceedingly cool. Well, that part was easy considering there’s just so many damned great things about Philly. The hard part: we had to get a mural made and installed. However, it’s getting there. It’ll be going up at 1108 South Street. The design was put together by local artist, Dominic Doyle. The ten lucky places in no particular order?

These places have been good to us over the years, and you’ve never been to any of them, there is likely a deep void in your soul that you really should fill. As for the mural, all I can say is that it’s looking incredible. We’ll be updating our Fiesta Movement page when we get a more-finalized sketch.

Oh, and the first 100 Foursquare checkins get a free drink. So please come by, we’ll have free sliders, tots, quesadillas, chips & salsa (yum, yum). And to top things off we’ll be having the DJ spinning music all night long. RSVPing is mandatory, so do it up. This isn’t Facebook, kids. No maybes.

Happy Friday, fellow Geekadelphians! Did you beware Ides of March? Did you wear green, get rowdy and drink beer? Did you hide from people who were wearing green, getting rowdy and drinking beer? Here comes this week’s edition of Geek Weekly– get excited!

Wired Science ran an awesome article about an awesome architectural entry submitted to eVolo Magazine’s futuristic skyscraper contest. “Designed by Sarly Adre bin Sarkum of Malaysia, the waterscraper would be about as tall as the Empire State Building, but with only a couple of stories exposed above the surface. The whole building would be a self-sufficient, floating, archeology.” And, as you can see from the sweet picture above, IT HAS TENTACLES!

In what sounds eerily like the flashback sub-plot of V for Vendetta, a former Pfizer employee is suing the company for contracting an artificial virus created by a colleague.

Apparently, people build their own jet-powered motorcycles.

Crazy architectural developments are now open for all walks of society, including felons! Check this article out about building a prison in the sky. SRSLY.

What do The Terminator and an Earth-bound asteroids have in common? A new study is showing that we mere Earthlings aren’t as prepared for planetary collision as we thought. Blowing up something hurdling at us through space will lessen impact, and likely be the only thing saving us from ending up like T-Rex & Co, right? Um, NOT ANYMORE! PopSci ran an article and said that “new research from Los Alamos National Lab and the University of California, Santa Cruz, shows that if the asteroid isn’t moving fast enough, or if the nuke isn’t big enough, the asteroid will pull itself back together, T-1000-style, within a matter of hours.” WHAT?! As if that’s not crazy enough, the projected solution get’s a little Superman (1978).

Since my iPhone 3G case snapped a few months ago, my poor little sidekick has been subjected to various surface scratches and bruises from resting it atop bar counters and restaurant tables aplenty. When DiNG contacted us recently to test drive their vinyl skins, I responded to said email with furious fingers at the chance at a new case with some style. Take a look after the cut for my impressions and a chance to win your very own DiNG!

After looking through their vast selection of artwork from some of today’s popular visual artists, designs for some pretty interesting bands (Mastodon skins?) and a wide array of patterns, I came across this piece by artist Alex Pardee titled “Narwhal“. Often considered a myth, the narwhal is basically an Artic-dwelling whale with a huge horn like tooth. To answer your burning question, this is confirmation that sea unicorns exist.

Ahem — back to the skin, sorry. The process for applying the skin is a simple as the videos describe, however my shaky hands couldn’t do that nearly as fast. Applying the back skin was a bit confusing at first with its several edges causing me to reapply the skin a few times. Thankfully the DiNG’s adhesive material kept up with my clumsy self where other skins would have given up after one go.

By the time I got my dirty mitts all over the back of the phone again, the cleaning cloth had dried up like a shriveled tissue. Just a bit more of the rubbing alcohol solution would have been nice for repeat applications.

Admiring the finished product is especially satisfying when you turn it in the light to take in the DiNG’s gloss coating. Not only is it shiny (and purrty), but it serves as a great defense against surface scratches. After giving mine a good couple slides across the table and seeing no visible damage, I know my phone is safe with DiNG.

Warning: I’m nearly 98 percent sure that DiNGs are not designed for those who suffer from butter fingers. In other words, don’t expect a DiNG to save your precious Blackberry or Macbook from that potential drop down a flight of stairs.

One last thing that DiNG seems to have missed is that the top of the backside skin covers the iPhone’s SIM card slot. While there aren’t going to be many times one would need to open it, I imagine it would be a nuisance to have to peel a bit of the skin back just to get your SIM card.

All things considered, DiNG skins are an attractive alternative for those who want to avoid putting their iPhone in a silicone bubble while maintaining a bit of scratch protection. Not to mention that for around $14.99 it doesn’t exactly break the bank to rock your favorite mobile device, game console or laptop in style.

Want to win a free DiNG courtesy of the DiNG team? Just take a look at the artwork and designs they have and tell us which is your favorite and why. Contest ends next Thursday, March 25th, so get to looking around!

Day three of MIX 10 was thankfully a bit more laid back than the previous days in that it was sans devastatingly loud music and neon flashes, however the same cannot be said for last night. MIX 10’s annual attendee party was held this time around in LAX, the underground night club within the lavishly laid-out Luxor Hotel.

And what a nerd-fest (in the best of ways)! Only at a party hosted by Microsoft would you overhear conversations about the beauty of NUI and Japanese business card culture amongst Ke$sha’s “Tik-Tok” reverberating about the place.

More on what went down this morning — and a Memento style flash back — after the jump.

Before we get into the Day Three experience, can I just say something (too bad, saying it anyway)? Dinner last night with the rest of the Academic Developer Evangelists was absolutely delicious with a capital “Yum!”

We wined — or ‘beered’ in my case — and dined at the Aureole in the Mandalay Resort and were joined by Technical Audience Marketing Lead Amy Conklin. We each ordered from their new Parallel Tasting Menu that ran the gamut from specially prepared lobster coupled with scallops to a strip of kobe beef with an apple glazed beef dish. The point of the menu was to illustrate how two seemingly distinct dishes can actually host similar flavors. Not sure if I buy all of it, but that kobe did strangely have an apple kick after a while.

Alright, time warp over (yes, that means get out of the Delorean). Day Three mainly consisted of one thing: Twitter. Whether it was me and the other Insiders relentlessly ‘tweeting the deets’ — like you hipsters are saying these days – or chatting it up with Twitter Platform Team member Raffi Krikorian on the Channel 9 stage about the Twitter geotagging API, visions of animated blue swallows and fail whales danced in our heads.

Raffi let us in on a layman’s version of how the Twitter geotagging API works, how Twitter are handling some of the recent security and spamming issues the platform has been wrestling with and some of the implications of adding the context of ‘where’ to our tweets. Krikorian says that Twitter is taking a “let the jerks be jerks” stance on how tightly the platform reigns in on privacy.

In other words, be sure you trust the people that you’re connected with deeply via Twitter if you’re the kind of chap who likes to keep the personal life close to the chest. This is due to the fact that the platform team doesn’t want to get involved with the slippery slope of privacy, according to Krikorian.

It’s fortunate that the platform team has at least made it so that geotagging is initially a conscious choice by the other through which he or she must toggle via a Twitter platform plug-in regardless of client be it Tweetie (personal favorite), Twitbird or etc.

I’m not gonna cry, I swore to myself I wouldn’t. MIX 10 is over. There, I said it (sniffle).

Joking aside, covering MIX 10 from the press tables to speaking with some of the most influential folks at Microsoft has been an amazing experience. Hey, hopefully some day I’ll be doing this type of thing for a living and thank you to Microsoft and the Academic Evangelist team (as well as Jessica Anderson and Amy Conklin) for preparing me for a now even more potentially brighter future.

Have any questions about my MIX 10 coverage or about the Microsoft Insiders Program? Follow me or send Geekadelphia an email at geekadelphia@gmail.com and I’ll be sure to answer in a following post or tweet. Until then!

After another keynote filled to the gills with exciting announcements and even more questions (not unlike an episode of Lost), not to mention ear crushingly loud tunes, it’s time to recollect and share some of the more intriguing moments from the address. This morning’s intro, a demo of Project Gustav, had much more significance than yesterday’s considering that it turned out to be a technology that Bill Buxton’s researchers have been working on. More on that later.

For all intents and purposes (i.e. what my feeble mind could grasp), the theme of Day Two’s keynote was Internet Explorer 9. With IE 9 Platform Preview going live today as well the various demos that were displayed to us this morning, it’s safe to assume that Microsoft is focused on HTML 5. More on my impressions of IE 9, it’s dependency on and the power of HTML 5 as well as some reflection on Mr. Buxton’s inspiring presentation after the cut.

Nicolas Kamuda wowing the audience via Project Gustav

It’s obvious that IE 9 is banking on the success of HTML 5, but why? HTML 5 seems to be what developers and designers alike are looking towards to introduce some harmony into the web app and site creation sphere. The coding messiah promises to bring the same markup across all browsers. In other words, HTML 5 wants to be compatible with all browsers and leave it up to them to decide how much they want out of it.

Which is why Microsoft’s goal seems to have its browser get the absolute most out of what HTML 5 will allow. How are they doing this exactly? Well, I can’t give exact details (because I don’t know them), but I can say this: hardware accelerated code. This means that HTML 5 in IE 9 will take full advantage of the hardware in your computer from GPU performance to the amount of cores your processor houses. This was made apparent in the HTML 5video playback demo where an HP netbook was playing HTML encoded video at watchable framerates in 720p.

“So what,” you say? How about the little monster playing two 720p streams at once stacked vertically? I don’t care who you are — that’s just plain impressive.

However, one question still hangs: how will HTML 5 in IE 9 support lower end machines that might not have multi -core processors or high video RAM GPUs?

“Our video demonstration on the netbook is a great example of what a low-end [machine] would do. It’s hard to find a single core machine these days,” says Dean Hachamovitch, General Manager of the IE Team.

Nonetheless, actually getting something out of our multi-core processors other than better game performance is a plus. Not to mention the possibilities for even more graphically powerful browsing experiences.

Sorry to you developers out there, but I won’t be saying much on the Visual Studio 2010 and Azure news as I can’t really think of anything remotely witty or insightful on the subjects. Check out their various team blogs for some more information.

Microsoft Principal Researcher and electric saxophonist Bill Buxton

Bill Buxton’s presentation featured everything from him playing some electric saxophone for us to differentiating the gestures between a metal fan and a classical aficionado. However, this wasn’t the point. His overall purpose was to explain the fact that Natural User Interface (NUI) design must be geared toward the respect and embodiment of the skills of the user.

This means that in the case of NUI, design should be extremely focused and designed to a specific set of functions that cater to a specific type of user. This is where the demo of Project Gustav came in (picking up where the keynote intro left off), a paint project gone extreme. Using multi-touch functionality backed by an intense physics engine, Bill’s team of researchers have created an application that emulates the painting process in a way that only a professional artist or graphic designer would be able to appreciate due to its intricacies in emulating the experience. Intricacies like supporting multi-touch and stylus interaction, a physics engine that can simulate the effect of oil pants smudging and blending and the ability to rotate and zoom the canvas to focus on position and incredible detail. It all seems to make for an intuitive experience that respectfully emulates the reality of the experience.

And that is the bottom line.

Imagine a future where these type of NUIs are designed for all types of skill sets and user types. One can dream, can’t he?

I won’t say much on my experience with interviewing Bill Buxton today other than it was surreal (and it was all recorded anyway and will go live shortly). Being able to pick his brain about where design is headed was an incredible experience. One tip: the future of UX design is in the team mentality. Rather than trying to be a renaissance man, try to assemble the renaissance team of extremely specialized folks who can dream big and make (most of) those dreams reality from design to development respectively, according to Buxton.

Getting some key info on Windows Phone 7 was pretty neat, but let’s not get too much into it as a full feature will be going live soon based on that discussion with Todd Brix, Senior Director on the Mobile Communications Buisness Team. Here’s one tidbit to whet your appetites: that “I’ll be Late” calendar feature I was so (weirdly) excited about will be supported by several clients including Microsoft Outlook, Live, Google and more as well as be ideal for both personal and enterprise use, according to Brix.

With two days down and one more to go, we’re sadly nearing the end of our MIX 10 experience. Before things get too sappy, let’s just say that this young writer is more than lucky to have such an opportunity (thanks to the Academic Evangelists). That’s it for today’s recap, stay tuned tomorrow and the days after for more updates, analysis and my experience of MIX 10.

In an attempt to gather what I can from what was a blur of technology, flashy lights and tucked in polo shirts, let’s take a look at what Day One of MIX 10 was like. Since, you all might know how the live blog went – we’ll get it right tomorrow morning as long no one decides to release a 100+ MB download in the middle of the keynote – we’ll just take a look at a few of my favorite announcements.

Surely, you all know a lot of details concerning Windows Phone 7 were released including specifics on XNA and Silverlight support as well as more information concerning Expression Blend 4 and the release of the Silverlight 4 release candidate (final version due next month!), so let’s get into the nitty gritty after the break.

Microsoft’s Scott Guthrie

Just one thing on the live blogging before we move on: experiencing the keynote from the press tables was pretty surreal to say the least. Now that we have all the kinks worked out, expect even better coverage of tomorrow’s keynote from the Microsoft Student Insiders.

After being blown away from everything Windows Phone 7 related, let’s take a look at a few specifics from the keynote that were particularly face melting.

Graphic.ly

Yes, there have been comic book apps before, but Graphic.ly on Windows Phone 7 looks to be a game changer for one reason: Deep Zoom. The ability to zoom in on Spidey’s web nearly to the silky fibers will just make the experience of reading a comic book on a device that much more rich. Live sharing and commenting is pretty much expected at this point from nearly any app, so let’s not go there, but the ability to share on individual pages is fairly significant.

“I’ll Be Late”

This calendar feature may very well be what sets the Windows Phone 7 apart from other cellular calendar offerings (this time it’s your choice). The ability to tell everyone involved in a given event that you’ll be late with the push of a button is just plain nifty. However, the specifics on how exactly this is handled in the back end is still behind the curtain, but it’s safe to assume you’re going to be required to already be connected to a service like Microsoft Outlook.

An early sketch of Simple Lister using Expression Blend’s Sketchflow feature

Simple Lister

Cynergy’s eBay listing app using Silverlight 4’s out-of-browser functionality may turn me into a seller. Like I said during Day One’s live blog, I do have a ton of text books lying around, just waiting patiently to be worth something. While the demo was designed to display Silverlight 4’s ability to create an app for out-of-browser, the apps obviously intuitive UX was the selling point for a chap like myself.

After restructuring my thoroughly melted dome, it was time for some sessions. Morten Rand-Hendriksen, Creative Director of Pink & Yellow Media, hosted a session titled Rapid WordPress Design and Prototyping with Expression Web 3. Key word here in this session was rapid – unbelievably rapid. Thank the various MIX 10 technical teams for cataloging the sessions as I’ll need to give this one another pass through. Tips from the first viewing? First, if you plan to do any theme creation/uploading to your CMS of choice, give Microsoft/web a shot (it automates a ton of the process). Second, Mesh is a useful tool for linking files and folders across multiple computers for easy updating. Flash drives? Puhhlease!

Paul Dawson of EMC Consulting provided a session on Total Experience Design with a severe focus on an extremely important preparation for UX design: field research. According to Dawson, field research is essential to creating a difference in an experience to which the designer has no involvement in. “Design without boundaries” is the name of the game here and why limit oneself to Google for research?

Lastly, Robby Ingebretsen of Pixel Lab gave us Ten Ways to Attack Design Problems and Come Out Winning. While I won’t get into all ten tips, Ingebretsen did emphasize the importance of sketching, finding inspiration from all media and identifying a theme for your design. While these things may sound like common sense, give a look-see to the session as he presents his seemingly logical ideas in a way that ends up being profound and inspiring. I just want to create something!

Just before some spicy huarache for dinner, General Manager of the Expression Team Eric Zocher let me in on some key information such as the fact that there have been nearly 600 performance tests on Expression Blend 4 thus far to ensure an increase in speed in Blend’s final release this summer. Not to mention that for anyone currently using Expression Studio 3 products their upgrades to Expression 4 versions will be 100% free.

That’s it for Day One (what a start), everyone. Stay tuned this afternoon at 12:00 p.m. EST as the Insiders and I will be blogging live from the next keynote featuring Bill Buxton and Dean Hachamovitch!

** Mild Spoilers Ahead. You’ve Been Warned!!**

I don’t want to say Kick-Ass kicks ass. Not because it doesn’t, but because that’s to0 easy a description of the film. With a name like Kick-Ass, the movie had a lot to live up to. Not just because it was based on the successful Mark Millar/John Romita Jr. comic of the same name, but because if you give a movie a title like Kick-Ass, it better deliver.

It does. Oh boy, it does!

Kick-Ass tells the story of Dave Lizewski, a high school kid just trying to get by. A modern day version of Peter Parker but with one big difference. Parker was constantly picked on by students higher up on the popularity chain. Dave on the other hand, isn’t even noticed. Practically invisible to all but his two friends Todd and Marty (Evan Peters and Clark Duke). These three geeks hang out at their local comic shop talking about girls, comic books, girls, and girls. It is during one of these conversations when Dave asks the question of why aren’t there any real life superheroes.

Pointing out that more people want to be Paris Hilton than Spider-Man, Dave is then reminded by his friends that if anyone tried to be a hero, they would probably be killed. Now at this point, any normal person would have ended the conversation and never think about it again, but after being robbed by two thugs while a bystander looks on and does nothing, Dave decides to take matters into his own hands. After a few hours of online shopping and a couple of clicks of the mouse, Dave is on his way to becoming something great. Well, almost.

You see, in any other superhero film, the protagonist would most likely have superpowers or be an insanely wealthy billionaire who can afford gadgets and countless hours of martial arts training. Dave has neither of these things going for him. He hasn’t trained. He has no money. He is just a kid in a costume. So on his way home from school he happens to see the same two thugs who robbed him of his comics trying to break into a car. Deciding to take a stand against these punks proves to be harder than he imagined. And that’s what makes this movie so great. The idea of being a superhero has been romanticized so much recently that showing a kid being stabbed in the gut, crawling away for help only to be hit by a speeding car definitely kills the fantasy. The film doesn’t encourage the audience to take such actions. It just lets you safely live out the fantasy through Dave.

Read the rest of the review after the jump.

After months of recuperation and believing he has learned from his mistake, Dave contemplates just leaving well enough alone, but the call to action proves too strong to resist. On what starts off as a rather hum drum night of walking the beat, Dave is in the middle of saving a cat when he gets involved in a gang beatdown. Once again feeling the need to protect those who need it, he intervenes. Again, the fight isn’t quick, clean, and efficient. It’s brutal, messy and definitely does not feel choreographed. It is believable. A bruised and bloody Dave successfully protects the target of the gang attack and thanks to the advancements in technology, his fight is uploaded onto Youtube and every social networking site you can imagine. It is here that Kick-Ass is born.

Elsewhere in New York, crime lord Frank D’Amico ( the awesome Mark Strong) is struggling to protect his empire from what he believes are rival drug lords. However, the truth is that Kick-Ass isn’t the only superhero running around New York. D’Amicos’ son Chris, played by Christopher Mintz-Plasse, worships Kick-Ass and later becomes the hero Red-Mist. He is very much like Dave except he has the funding to get a custom designed outfit and car. He even gets a professional website which makes Kick-Ass’ Myspace account look even more amateurish by comparison. Eventually Kick-Ass and Red Mist meet and strike up a partnership. Unfortunately for both of them, there is an even better duo lurking in the shadows.

Enter Big Daddy and Hit Girl.

To say that Nicholas Cage and Chloe Moretz steal the show would be an understatement. Much like how the villain of a Batman movie upstages Batman, Big Daddy and Hit Girl steal Kick-Ass’s thunder. It’s easy to see why. Cage plays Big Daddy like Adam West’s portrayal of the caped crusader. It is so over the top I can’t imagine how they managed to shoot those scenes without breaking into fits of laughter every ten seconds. Hit Girl on the other hand is a no nonsense hard ass who will be the most talked about character of the year. Whether she’s shooting gang members, slicing limbs, or berating Kick-Ass for being a complete amateur, you come to understand that for Hit Girl, putting on the costume is not a game. I have to admit that it feels weird describing an 11 year old as a hard ass but that’s what she is.

The biggest shock in regards to Hit Girl isn’t the language she uses, but how incredibly violent she is. Think Uma Thurman slicing up the Crazy 88’s in Kill Bill Volume 1. She has the best kills of the movie and she will undoubtedly be the most talked about movie character of 2010. Chloe Moretz is just that good. A lot of focus will be put on Hit Girl’s age and how that may possibly translate into real world violence with youth. Let me remind people that this is an R-Rated film and as such, no child should be watching this movie unless their parents think it’s okay. I haven’t seen the film aimed at children since they aren’t the target audience by a long shot. This is strictly for the grown ups.

As for the film’s faithfulness to the original material, there are some liberties taken regarding character origins, deaths and relationships. This is better than getting a literal translation from page to screen because it keeps an element of surprise to the film. If you know everything that is going to happen, why even bother seeing the movie? So for anyone who was thinking of skipping reading the comic, you may want to rethink that decision. The first series has recently been collected in hardback (which is available at Brave New Worlds btw), and it is a blast. The changes made were to help the movie flow better, and the scenes taken out or altered aren’t missed. In fact you might not even notice the changes until after the film is over.

Kick-Ass has such an energy that it reminds me quite a bit of Kill Bill. In fact, at one point during the film, a character’s origin is told through a comic style/animated segment featuring the artwork of John Romita Jr. The world of Kick- Ass is so steeped in comics that the transition to this animation never felt out of place but just enhanced the experience. No 3D glasses required!

Kick Ass was one of my most anticipated films to see this year, and it was worth the wait. A mix of both Spider-Man and Kill Bill, it is everything I wanted and then some. I’ve heard people talk about wanting there to be more of a sense of escapism in these genre films, and I think Kick-Ass is probably the best example of that at the moment. It’s funny, violent, and entertaining. Rest Assured that when the film is released nationwide on April 16th, I will be watching it again.
