The closing Keynote on Day 1 by Tim O Reilly and the VC Panel on Day 2 were the two sessions I was really looking forward to at the PaypalX Innovate conference.

Tim O Reilly is an incredibly brilliant man. He is an ideas person, who continually grows, blends and morphs his ideas. His ability to learn from everything he watches is what makes him who he is. He is soaking up, everything, at every minute. I felt just so incredibly lucky to watch him talk, just from a few feet away.

Tim is a perfect combination of human and brilliance. Seeing him swell with pride as he shared a picture of his daughter and grandchild in the context of face recognition software was just a beautiful reflection of who Tim is as a person. He continued to talk about how he watches his grandson explore everything with his hands – his feeling and sensory world – much like the applications and devices of today.

Tim also referred to the Internet Operating System – that gets better as more and more people use it. An operating system that belongs to the masses. He said that open platforms are important at a time of the internet operating system alluding to services provided by Google such as street to street navigation being immensely helpful.

Finally, Tim spoke about the paradox of all open platforms. Platforms all start out to give power to the masses. Google, facebook, myspace …all platforms. But as the platforms get bigger and bigger, are they really giving power to the masses or is the platform becoming a threat? Tim talked about this fear for the future. While Open Platforms are about redistribution of power, it is unclear where they will all end up.

So it is with Paypal. As much as Paypal X is much needed to create opportunity and innovation in the payments space, where will this finally lead? Not so sure. But for now, it is all good.

Got into SFO yesterday to attend the PaypalX conference as a tech blogger. It has been great so far – waiting for the Keynote right now.

I will post updates here through the day.On twitter and with a Whrrl story. The hash tag is #ppxi09

Paypalx is now open – Paypal opens its API http://x.com – The developer network is now open!

John Donahoe
President and CEO
eBay Inc.

John became President and CEO of eBay Inc. on March 31, 2008. In this role, John has global responsibility for growing each of the company’s business units, which include eBay Marketplaces, PayPal and Skype.

Highlights from his talk -

If they were going to be successful (Ebay, Skype, Paypal) , he knew they had to put technology at the forefront. He put technology at the top by putting technologists such as Mark Carges in key roles and made opening up the API one of the top goals

The idea is to disrupt their technology before the others disrupt it. They do not want to be the bottelneck of innovation anymore.

Ecommerce is still in its infancy. Only 5% of all payments are done online. It has grown a lot since the past 10 years, but has a long way to go

We believe that consumer behavior will change more in the next 3 years than it did in the past 10 years.

Paypal will be bigger than Ebay – since Paypal is THE ecommerce platform.

Paypal will double over the next 3 years – with help from the developer community.

Osama Bedir

VP, Paypal

Paypal will do $70 Billion this year. New APIs , new pricing, new programming this year

APIs avaliable currency conversion, pre-approvals, pay anyone, send money, chained payments, parallel payments (in 190 countries) – bringing wallet in the cloud

Number of new pricing changes starting next year.

Paypal is working with banks, you can send money to family across the globe (P2P) online with just a person’s email #ppxi09

We watched lots of great demos too – most impressed with the concept of the “wallet in a cloud” – a seamless payment experience from anywhere.Payvment also is giving away their code to incorporate payments in facebook apps for FREE. Excited about how all this will pan out!

It is high time all the payment changes make it. I am excited about the innovation that will come about as a result of the open API.

It has been a great morning at #ppxi09 !

I have LOVED Jeff Pulver’s conference because he creates situations for the unexpected to happen – by bringing together people from SO many spaces – all inspired and inspiring in their own way.
One of my goals of creating and producing the #140conf events is to in effect enable what could be best described as: “Social Media Heterosis” (hybrid vigor in the social media space) and cross connect communities which are all using twitter as a platform in their business but would have otherwise have never had any reason to meet each or connect with each other. The upcoming events in Los Angeles and London will reflect this thinking.

While twitter is both the language we speak at #140conf and the platform we are using, my goal isn’t to be “just a twitter conference” but rather continue to look at how a diverse group of people are being effected by the emerging NOW Internet and provide a platform for people to listen, learn and connect with the people who were sharing their voices and perspectives, hence the intended intention for diversity.

During the past few days I realized that what the #140conf event series really represents are what can be best characterized as “Tech Concerts”, especially since the people who are speaking are the rock stars of their respective industry segments and in some cases really are Rock stars. The #140conf events are taking place in venues where concerts happen on a regular basis. And at the end of the day as the event creator, co-host and producer, I am trying my best to provide great days of end-to-end entertainment and engaging discussions.

If you are not already registered to attend the upcoming event in Los Angeles, if you would like to be there, I would like to find a way to help make it so. As someone who is on this mailing list, I look to you as a friend and as someone who supports my vision to help make the #140conf events happen and for the message to be heard.

I hope you can join me in Los Angeles.

And finally, they are really good at networking with smart people who have little in common with them, but from whom they can learn.

This is a video created by a little girl called Elsie. Elsie created the video to go along with the book “Rufus’ first night alone”, that was created in the Memetales Collaboration Space.

Why a video with a book?

Just because a book is much more than just a story. And a story is much more than a book. Books and stories are experiences that extend beyond each other, into our lives. That is the philosophy Memetales is based on.

We believe that a book gets stronger when the artist, writer and the community gather aorund it to create arts, crafts, videos, products and whole lot of experiences around it and share those with the rest of the community.

We are now inviting parents, educators, crafters, CHILDREN and anyone else wanting to collaborate and contribute!

How YOU can contribute and what you get?

You can contribute is any way, shape or form. As long as what you create is tied to the book and/or the theme of the book. You can create games, videos, crafts, products …you name it! Create a book review. Create a play based on the book. Let your imaginaion run wild!

Have you seen this craft set inspired by “Where the WIld Things Are?” http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=32028957

We hope that by creating a rich experience space around a book, everyone will benefit – the parents, crafters, writers, the community and most of all, the children!

Depending on how/what you contribute, you can get a number of things -

- experience and joy of collaborating on a book. If you are a parent/teacher, you can use this as an opportunity to involve the kids in the process of making a video, doing a reading, a craft and so on. Imagine the joy when they see their work published ALONG with a book!

- educate your child, enjoy quality time and make learning fun for your child. Have your child read the book, make a video and have everyone watch it on Memetales!

- get backlinks to you blog. If you are a blogger or a squidoo member, youc an get backlinks to your blog if you become a contributor at Memetales.Effectively free advertising within a great context.

- advertising for your products and resulting sales. If you are a crafter with items for sale a=on another website such as Etsy, you can advertise the products on Memetales. You can contribute craft instructions and advertise your craft kits, finished crafts and items along with the book/theme.

- build your reputation. Credibility builds within Memetales based on the number of books you write and illustrate as well as the experiences you contribute. Members with the best reputations and maximum contributions get invited to the closed Memetales Collaboration Space that lets them have the first chance at collaborating on books, listings and so on. Collaborating on books before the book comes out earns you free books and more!

A number of you are already singing songs and doing crafts with your kids. A number of you are already blogging about books. A number of you are already doing all of this and more. Why not become a part of a rich community that believes in reading, books and the future of our children ?

If you are interested in joining up, contributing and becoming a part of the Memetales Creator community, be sure to contact me. I am @thinkmaya on twitter.

At Memetales, every book is a whole new world. Every book is a celebration. Come and celebrate books and stories with us.

Changing networks

At its simplest, evolutionary graph theory deals with the future of a network and the individuals that live at its nodes when the network begins to evolve and its individuals start moving, mutating and influencing their neighbours. A network can evolve in two ways: either individual nodes evolve while the network stays the same (a new strain of flu enters a population; one person gets 10 friends to vote for Obama), or the network itself changes (as continents drift, they separate subpopulations of the same species; someone makes 10 new friends on Facebook).

“People sometimes think of networks in terms of a concept called a replicator,” Lieberman says. “A replicator is an entity, be it an organism, a computer virus, or even an idea, that can somehow make copies of itself. Networks are a way of thinking about where the new copy can go.”

It wasn’t a big surprise when evolutionary graph theory found applications in biology, which abounds with these replicators. One context where it has been applied is the study of cancer.

Lieberman explains it like this: “A really crude way of thinking about cancer is that cancer cells are ordinary cells that reproduce too fast. When you frame it that way, you see that cancer is an evolutionary problem: what makes an individual cell fitter (reproducing a lot) makes the organism a lot less fit (death from cancer). Natural selection at the level of the cell is in conflict with natural selection at the level of the organism.”

“By severely restricting cellular reproduction to a small collection of cells called stem cells, the human body actually reconfigures its own network in a way that dramatically weakens natural selection at the cellular level. This enables the organism to survive without cancer for far longer.”

But now evolutionary graph theorists are beginning to think about applications beyond biology. After all, the theory applies to replicators, things that somehow manage to make copies of themselves. But no one says that to be a replicator, you have to be alive.

Enter web-based social networking. On websites such as Facebook and MySpace, networks evolve as people influence one another (changing the configuration of the nodes) and as new friendships are made (changing the network as a whole). Sites such as these are just teeming with replicators. “Vampires”, a Facebook application, can spread as easily as the flu: when people “bite” their friends, the “Vampires” app gets passed along the friendship network.

Evolutionary graph theorists have already begun to make progress. “One of the interesting things we’ve found about social networks is that the presence of network structure can give rise to pro-social behaviours,” says Lieberman.

“This is an idea now called ‘network reciprocity’. There’s an inverse relationship between the number of connections you have in the network and the extent to which you’ll ’stick your neck out’ for them: the ties that bind are tighter if there are fewer ties.”

via guardian.co.uk

While we are connecting with more and more people online everyday, how do we make sure those connections matter? These are my thoughts –
1. Meet offline. Go to conferences, tweetups and invite people home! Conferences are a great way to meet people. They connect people at an intellectual level (faster way to connect than at an emotional level) and help seed long term connections. Real life meetings also really help me tell the fake from the real people. And then, I meet all these people who are just so warm and wonderful, but do not happen to be star tweeters. And then, a bunch of online celebrities are really nothing spectacular when I meet them IRL. Real life is good. A great way to create good quality relationships.

2. Connect within a context – I am a person that CANNOT connect without a context. I will not go drinking with a bunch of people unless I have something else connect me with them besides the booze Within a context, I am able to be passionate, real and myself.

3. Think of networking as mingling and chatting. That way, you keep it real and keep the sales pitch out. on the other hand, networking isn’t a bad word unless you are genuine and you really care for others. The people that will matter in the long run – both in your life and in your business are people who have a sense of respect for you, for themselves and for life in general.

4. Finally, understand that you will never be able to talk to everyone. So do not try to do that. Get smart and find ways to scale yourself through the value you add in the lives of people. Mentor people, host events, enable others and find ways to impact people over the long term.

How do YOU maintain quality connections? How many people would YOU stick your neck out for? Are you making sure they know that?

One of the main reasons why Forrester is correcting its forecast is the fact that prices have come down (and this report was actually written before the Amazon announcement). In addition, Forrester also sees increased consumer awareness thanks to the current media buzz around eReaders. While the Kindle was mentioned 8,680 times in news stories in 2008, it has been mentioned over 15,700 times in 2009 already (including the month of September). In addition, the fact that more content is now available and that manufacturers like iRex and Sony are backing the open ePub standard is also opening up the market to buyers who previously weren’t interested in Amazon’s closed Kindle ecosystem.

via chrisbrogan.com

At a time, when we all have come to accept “freemium” as a way of life, Chris Brogan reminds us that we need to figure out the “value” of a product or service we provide, rather than give something out for free so that it will take off.

If you give something for free, you might never be able to ever charge for it – he says. And that is true – very true.

Times have changed. In the age of “digital” and “globalization” , you cannot blame people for trying to get the best value for their money. I know I have done that myself. The key however seems to be in 2 things –

1. know what you are made of
2. know your market
3. know what value you(your skills) create for them

And then, quote your price for the value you create for your target market.

Read his comments – he advises a person to provide an introductory offer as opposed to lowering a rate.

That piece of advice carries a secret – particularly for me, as an entrepreneur. Never shy away from an opportunity that does not pay. Take it. Work for free. But while you do that, be sure to to use it as an “introductory rate” – aka – limited in time.

Chris, in his post, refers to a blog post by Justin – http://www.justinkownacki.com/2009/10/01/ideas-are-worthless-no-one-owns-anything/

Justin is brilliant (that is understating it) and provides arguments for the fact that ideas are worthless and provides numerous examples for the fact that people never paid for ideas …WHY?
4–because people do not connect with ideas, they connect with a story.

So, between the two brilliant men, this is what I made of it –
1. know what you are made of
2. know your market
3. know what value you(your skills) create for them
4. tell a really good story

And then, CHARGE for your services. (Pricing is a whole new science altogether and know that you will always make exceptions in cases where you will give away a “free” code to someone because – in the end – they create more value for you in the longer run ….)

BRILLIANT BRILLIANT post by @chrisbrogan
