The first question you might ask yourself would probably go something like this: did there even need to be a remake? And my answer would be a simple one, no explanation needed – no. Secondly, you might ask me: well, should I spend my money to go see it? And my answer to this wouldn’t be so simply put; however, I would probably lean more towards the positive over the negative.

As this is a remake, the plot is virtually the same as the first – five 20-somethings, all of whom are good looking in one way or another, go out to a mysterious and rotting cabin in the middle of the woods for a kind of vacation from the pressures of urban life. Once upon getting there, one of these so said individuals finds what’s called a Necronomicon, a Book of the Dead that is able to revive the evil spirits that reside in the woods. Of course, beyond all logic and proper warning, that same person says the word/phrase and the spirit is unleashed, threatening the lives of everyone inside the enclosed space of the cabin, a space that turns from cozy to claustrophobic almost immediately.

What really puts this film over the edge, over falling into the so often clichéd and anti-climactic, seen-it-a-million-times-before horror genre, is its execution. While I certainly don’t agree that director Fede Alvarez (and producer Raimi) have accomplished fully on its clever and attention-grabbing tagline (“the most terrifying film you will ever experience”), I can acknowledge that this is the goriest film I have ever seen. And, take it from me, as being a major fan of the horror genre, putting it ahead of every other type of film (action, drama, Oscar-bait, rom-com, etc.), that’s saying something. Hundreds of gallons of fake blood had to be used, and taking into consideration that the movie famously doesn’t include any CGI sequences while filming only makes Evil Dead more impressive.

As far as cringe-worthy moments are concerned, there are plenty of them – you know, the ones you actually verbally react to, the ones that honestly make you squirm violently in your seats. Alvarez makes you feel the pain, but, honestly, with all that blood gushing and spewing on the screen, how could you not feel it? The creepily subtle (and, to an ironic degree, occasionally operatic) soundtrack, composed by  Roque Baños, which fits perfectly within the film, doesn’t hurt either. And while the motion picture doesn’t employ so much of the dark comedy that was omnipresent in the first installment, that doesn’t mean that some of it didn’t linger here – in fact, you’ll most likely find yourself laughing and cheering along with the very tongue-and-cheek humor that presents itself every once in a while (more than you might expect, actually).

In the end, for fans of the original, newbies just wanting to know what all the fuss is about (as well as those that detested the first one for its B-movie quality, like myself), and for fans of genuine blood-splattering horror, then look no further; this is for you. Extremely entertaining (even with an incredibly shaky third act) and perversely satisfying, Evil Dead has plenty savagely brilliant moments to cover up over the not-done-too-well bits, and I was happy with what I got. Not blown away, but content enough to recommend it to other horror junkies and anyone else looking for a good time at the movies.

Needless to say, it was a hugely ambitious task to try to tackle something of a remake and put it back up on the silver screen – even though Sam Raimi (“Spiderman” trilogy) was directing, I remained skeptical as to how the project, budgeted at a hefty $300 million+, would turn out. Well, ladies and gentlemen, “Oz the Great and Powerful,” a quasi-prequel to the aforementioned 1939 picture, turns out to really attempt to reintroduce the magic and awe of Baum’s work; however, the effort falls flat, and what you’re left with is a very pretty film with very little substance.

Centering in on Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a traveling con-man of a magician that lives off the profits he gets from being involved with his circus, we see that he’s anything but a wizard, as most of his tricks are marginal at best (at one point, he literally puts a dove up his sleeve). As soon as he refers to himself as Oz, you already know what’s going to happen, and, lo and behold, a tornado appears minutes later out of nowhere, sweeping him away in his hot air balloon and landing him in the colorful and mysterious world of Oz. Upon arriving in this world, one as colorful and beautiful as anything you’ve ever seen at the movies (it was done by the same visual artists that brought to life the $1 billion grosser “Alice in Wonderland” a few years back), Oz meets sisters Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Theodora (Mila Kunis), both of whom have tended to the Emerald City and its citizens ever since the previous wizard left his throne, and gets told the story of the Wicked Witch. He then vows to bring the witch to justice, but then, through a series of events, finds something out that leads him to question which witch is, well, the real evil witch.  The remainder of the movie, running at a rather bloated 2 hours and 10 minutes, revolves around how Oz must return the Emerald City to order and peace and vanquish the Wicked Witch.

Style-wise, Raimi does a wonderful job at getting the land of Oz to look the part, from its gorgeous landscapes of pink and orange-hued clouds to its over-sized and multicolored fauna; the movie even starts in black and white, just like the original. He also throws in a multitude of references that harken back to the original motion picture – the Wicked Witch’s laugh, years after first watching it, still makes my skin crawl. Raimi does manage to employ a handful of surprises, and while none of them manage to give off much of an effect, they do show some effort of creativity to a much cherished work. Casting, on another positive note, was on key, as well; James Franco as Oz didn’t make a considerable impact, but Michelle Williams as Glinda the Good Witch and Rachel Weisz as the Royal Adviser capture their roles just fine.

However, that’s about as far as the film goes in terms of overall quality – just fine, just alright. There was never a point where I was honestly blown away by something – even with all the gorgeous imagery and nostalgia that was inherent within “Oz,” it never went anywhere. With all the talent involved, the film’s immobility was a major drawback, and “Oz” became something of a niche-oriented movie, where kids under the age of 13 are probably the only ones who could really soak it in and enjoy it substantially. As the movie just kept going and going, I found myself not caring for anybody, not taking a stance within any of the presented conflicts.

It rooted itself in one-note, one pitch, one monotone wavelength that didn’t sustain the entirety of the movie, and while the whole thing wasn’t necessarily bad, I can’t exactly point out anything that I could say was completely new or worth paying a movie ticket for. For “Oz,” beauty seemed more important than substance and storyline, which becomes wearisome on your typical 90-minute feature – and downright unsatisfying for anything above 2 hours, especially for a film as ambitious as this. In the final act, pieces did start to come together, and for that, some credit should be given. Above that “some” portion, however, “Oz” is lacking hugely in entertainment value, an aspect that can’t be simply covered up by vivid imagery. For that, I can’t say I really recommend it – except if you liked Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.” If you enjoyed that mess of a movie, then, sure, go see this one, too. Everyone else, save your money for something better.
