5 Tips and Tricks for Towncraft

Towncraft is a relaxing resource gathering, crafting and town building game. Follow these tips and you'll soon have a large prosperous town and lots of money!

Tip 1 : Don't begin your town where you start on the map

It's tempting to just start building where you spawn on the map, but taking your time to explore and finding a good spot that's close to resources like different ore, sand, water, etc will save a lot of time and make things more efficient. Time = money!

It doesn't matter that you don't start crafting right away. Finding the right spot might take some time as you search for resources (see tip 2)

Tip 2 : Uncover more ore

If you hit rocks a couple of times with your pickaxe there's a chance that you can uncover hidden ore. You can discover iron, coal, silver, gold or even gems this way! When you do uncover these follow Tip 3!

Tip 3 : Don't mine out ore - place a mine

If you mine a rock with ore enough times it will be destroyed - nice way to get instant ore but not good for the long run. It's much better to build a mine next to a collection of ores. Every ore that touches the tile the mine is on can be mined from said mine, without destroying the ore.

Remember you can have multiple mines and hire workers for each mine too!

The rare ores like silver, gold and gems are harder to find, with gems sometimes having only one node, so if you want to be able to continue generating gems you must build a mine next to it!

Tip 4 : Hire workers

Once you have enough money you can start hiring workers to do the labour for you. They can perform all the time consuming resources gathering tasks for you and will carry what they've collected to the stockpile. This will leave you free to craft items for profit, or expanding the town, like building more houses for new workers.

Tip 5 : Don't hire a shopkeeper too soon

Shopkeepers are EXPENSIVE and you really need a lot of business and the right kind of goods before they start paying for themselves. I highly recommend that you craft items and sell them directly to the traders that visit you at first. Multiple traders visit your town everyday so it's easy to sell to them!

Get ready to dance with the new Rust DLC - Voice Props

Are you ready to dance? A new Rust DLC, Voice Props, is now available that includes new items that will allows you to record, stream, project and playback audio, as well as accessorize your base with some disco themed items. There are also new dance gestures and 7 achievements to unlock.

Cassettes and Recordings

Cassettes can store snippets of audio and can be used in a variety of ways. To record audio onto a Cassette, simply insert it into a Cassette Recorder and hit RMB to record. Cassettes come in 10, 20 and 30 second varieties. Once audio is recorded onto a Cassette you can press LMB to play it. You can also throw the Recorder with the Reload key, handy for sticking it on to vehicles or structures.

If you'd like to not hear recorded audio (for streaming purposes) you can disable it in the Options menu.

Boom Boxes

If you want to play your audio on something with a bit more oomph you can use a Boom Box. Coming in both static and deployed versions, you can use a Boom Box to play both recorded audio on Cassettes and stream internet radio.

To stream audio from the internet you’ll need to open the settings and select a channel. A few notes on this system:

We recommend content creators turn off this feature (set Internet Audio Streams to Off in the Options menu) in order to not trigger any copyright/DCMA strikes

Server Admins can add additional stations that might interest their players. Use the BoomBox.ServerValidStations convar to add stations (eg. BoomBox.ServerValidStations “Test Station,www.teststation.com”)

Deployed Boom Boxes can also be connected to other audio entities via the Audio Out IO port.

Megaphone and Microphone Stand

You can project your voice to friends and foes with the Megaphone and Microphone Stand.

The Megaphone is a held entity that you can use while out and about. Hold LMB to activate it and broadcast your voice. While holding LMB you won’t need to press your push to talk key if push to talk is enabled.

The Microphone Stand is a deployable version of the Megaphone that requires power. It has two different voice modes to modify your voice (squeaky and deep) and has an Audio Out IO port like the Boom Box to connect to other props in the DLC pack.

Disco Props

Give your base some late night disco vibes! Use the Disco Floor, Laser Light, Connected Speaker and Sound Light to set up a dancefloor that will make your neighbours jealous.

All of these props have an Audio In IO port so you can connect them to an audio source (like a Boom Box or Microphone Stand) to make them react to any playing audio.

The Connected Speaker will rebroadcast any audio from an audio source that it’s connected to, so you can play music throughout your entire base or hook them up to a Microphone Stand to make a base wide PA system.

New Dances

A dancefloor is pointless without dancing, so this DLC pack includes three new dance gestures. Unlike the existing gestures these dances will loop endlessly and you won’t be able to move while dancing. To cancel a dance you can just press a move input, jump, crouch or hit LMB.

Mobile Phone

Take calls on the go - and stylishly - with the latest in telecommunications technology on the island: the Mobile Phone! Giving you access to the telephone system from anywhere on the island. You can open the dialler with LMB and still move around while chatting.

We’ve also added the voicemail functionality to legacy deployed Telephones, simply insert a cassette with your voicemail message into the phone and anyone who calls in while you’re away will be able to leave a message for you. You can access any voicemail messages from the dialling screen. The number of voicemail messages that can be recorded depends on the length of the cassette, so a 10/20/30 second cassette can store 1/2/3 messages. If a new message is left when your voicemail is full the oldest voicemail will be deleted.

As always, you can earn Challenge Points by gathering, fishing, farming, and killing monsters. Word of Warcraft update released - Shadowlands: Chains of Domination

After a very long wait the new Word of Warcraft update is finally live! Shadowlands: Chains of Domination brings with it a whole new zone to explore, more levels to grind for the Covenant and (soon) new raid and mega-dungeon.

Here's the general overview of the big new features as revealed at BlizzCon 2021 :

A new subzone in The Maw is opening up called Korthia, City of Secrets.
The Maw is becoming a lot friendlier as the four Covenants are invading it and establishing a permanent foothold. Players will be able to use their mounts and, though we don't know how, disable the Eye of the Jailer so they can spend more time exploring the zone each day.
A new raid, the Sanctum of Domination, will have 10 bosses including Kel'Thuzad, the Terragrue (the big monster from Torghast), the Eye of the Jailer, and Sylvanas Windrunner herself.
There'll be new story quests and a Covenant campaign to complete, though it sounds like the Covenant campaign will be the same regardless of which Covenant you're in.
A new eight-boss mega-dungeon called Tazavesh, the Veiled Market will take players on an interdimensional heist through a mysterious Broker bazaar filled with strange mysteries and, oh yeah, a pirate dragon.
A bunch of smaller additions too, like more Covenant Renown levels and rewards, improvements to Torghast to make it less punishing, and a new season for PvP and Mythic+ dungeons.

Planet Zoo - Africa pack released!

Are you ready for a new Planet Zoo pack my fellow zookeepers? This time it brings us 5 new creatures, 4 habitat animals and 1 exhibit insect - Meerkat, Fennec Fox (my favourite!!), African Penguin, White Rhino and the Sacred Scarab Beetle.

The new animals will have their own requirements with the Meerkat introducing a new behaviour - digging! There are also over 180 new African themed scenery items and a new Timed Scenario.

ARK - Lost Island Map and new creatures

A free new DLC will be coming for ARK : Survival Evolved later this year that includes a brand new map called Lost Island and 3 brand new creatures.

The map is 150 sq. kilometre and will feature mysterious ruins to go explore. Boasting various biomes there will be something for every one to enjoy.

With the new map they will be adding 3 brand new creatures as well, one of them being the spiny Amargasaurus. Here's their description of it :

Of all the creatures in the sauropod family, Amargasaurus titanicus is likely the most unique looking. It sports two parallel rows of dorsal spines down the length of its neck, back, and tail--though the neck spines are significantly longer than the back or tail spines. These spines are a remarkable adaptation, giving Amargasaurus unmatched control of its body temperature. Made even more incredible by their time on ARKs, these spines store both extreme heat AND extreme cold, effectively allowing Amargasaurus to live comfortably in any environment. Its sails also make it an abnormally capable swimmer, for a sauropod.

Unlike most sauropods, Amargasaurus is very prone to violence, attacking most predators (and humans!) on sight. I suspect this behavior developed alongside the dangerous spines it uses as weapons.

Once finally tamed, it's no surprise that Amargasaurus' spines are its best feature. If removed early, their thermal storage becomes erratic, which is perfect for catalyzing sap development in many trees.

Some tribes, of course, adapted this thermal quirk for combat. By having Amargasaurus eject a spine before it sheds naturally, the freezing/warming waves that emanate from the spike play havoc with armor in the area. Interestingly, simple armor is barely affected, while more complex armor is more heavily affected.

I for one can't wait to go explore another brand new map, there's always been breath taking vistas and interesting areas to discover in all the previous maps for me, and I'm sure this one won't disappoint either!

The path of knowledge gives you more information about your surroundings, other players/creatures and protects and increases your skills.

The most notable skills here for me is at level 9 - No Skill loss, which protects your skills (except fighting skill) from skill loss on death; and at level 11 - Intellect of the Enlightened which gives a permanent 25% skillgain for all skill except Fighting and Faith.

Path of Power

This path gives you power and immunity over elements. Elemental Immunity (level 9) makes you immune to elemental damage which includes lava but to me the most useful skill is gained at level 7 - Erupt/Freeze - this allows you to turn rock/cliff tiles into lava and lava tiles into rock. Turning a rock tile into lava also turns the same cave tile to lava (the tile underground), and it includes ore tiles. So if you're in no mood to mine out yet another zinc vein, erupt the tile on the surface, wait for the 18 hour cool down, Freeze it - and quickly mine out your now regular rock tile in the cave. How lovely is that?

This path is a very interesting one with very unique consequences for joining - hallucinations! The higher your level become the more likely it is you'll see creatures from time to time that isn't really there. The bonus at level 7 - Shield of the Gone, gives you a constant damage reduction that increases as your meditation level goes up. This has always made it a popular choice for characters that play PvP. At level 9 you get the Teleport ability that transports you to a complete random spot on the map. All in all a very interesting path to choose if you ask me!

SimCity 4 still one of the best city builders and running smooth under Windows 10 with these tweaks

16 years later and very few city builder games can come close to the marvel of SimCity 4, hands down a legend in the genre. Even after all this time the game runs great and looks amazing, although you might have to make some tweaks in order for it to run smooth under Windows 10.

If you've somehow never heard of the game, SimCity allows players to create a region of land by terraforming, and then to design and build a settlement which can grow into a city. Players can zone different areas of land as commercial, industrial, or residential development, as well as build and maintain public services, transport and utilities. For the success of a city, players must manage its finances, environment, and quality of life for its residents.

Sounds easy right? But getting that balance right is a thin line and usually takes a few tries before you can create your very own megalopolis!

To really enjoy the game the biggest thing to tweak is to run the game in your own resolution, an option that is not available in the game settings for higher resolutions. To change this in Steam simply follow these steps :

Right-click on the game in your Steam library and select "Properties"
Click on the "Set Launch Options..." button (under the 'General' tab)
Copy and paste the next line into the box for 1920x1080 resolution (if you have a different resolution, simply substitute these numbers with your own) :
-CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32
OR there is further optimisation as well that seems to works for most modern setups, myself included. If you want to try it enter the following line in the box instead :
-CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32 -f -d:DirectX -Cursors:fullcolor -Intro:off -CPUPriority:high -CPUCount:1
Click "OK"
Close the 'Properties' window of the game
Run SimCity4

As easy as that! Makes a big difference to have the game run in the right resolution, the distortion I got before was a pain in the eye!

Bloodstained : Ritual of the Night has been released! The game is a exploration-focused, side-scroller action RPG packing all of the best features you've come to know and love from the Metroidvania genre into a single, content-packed game.

Play as Miriam, an orphan scarred by an alchemist’s curse which slowly crystallizes her body. In order to save herself, and indeed, all of humanity, she must battle her way through a demon-infested castle summoned by Gebel, her old friend whose body and mind has become more crystal than flesh.

The game is considered to be a spiritual successor to the Castlevania series, and development was led by Koji Igarashi (former series producer of Castlevania). Igarashi conceived the game after his departure from Konami in 2014, prompted by numerous fan requests for him to make another Metroidvania-type game. He used the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter to raise funds for the game.

There will be 3 playable characters by the sound of it, and 13 FREE DLCs via future content updates. “Speed Demon” Update containing Speed Run Mode, Boss Rush Mode and the Pure Miriam outfit available at launch!

Counter Strike Global Offensive - New Trust System for matching players

As Operation Hydra comes to a close a couple of days ago, CS:GO announces a new method of matchmaking called "The Trust Factor" and some changes to the game.

The Trust Factor

CS:GO is hoping to improve on the Prime Matchmaking they launches last year since they feel that it separated players "who might otherwise be perfectly happy playing together". Behaviours and attributes of players' Steam accounts, including overall time spent playing CS:GO, being reported for cheating, time spent on other games on their Steam account, etc, are all being factored in with the Trust Factor.

"The results of the experiment have been positive. In matches created using Trust Factor, most players ended up generating fewer reports regardless of their Prime status. We wanted to keep the best parts of Prime and ditch the parts that cause problems in the CS:GO community. Starting today, players will, by default, enter matchmaking using their Trust Factor rather than their Prime status and in the short term, players with Prime status can still choose to match using the old system."

Wingman
Wingman was the most popular Operation Hydra Event, and will remain available for players with a few changes. Wingman matchmaking will feature community favorite Wingman maps from Operation Hydra, and players will now be able to select individual maps instead of having one randomly selected. Additionally, players will now have a Wingman skill group that will be used exclusively when matchmaking in Wingman.

War Games
With the War Games format, players were able to select their desired game mode and could select a new experience after a few rounds. We’re keeping the War Games format, and folding in some of CS:GO’s alternative game modes into that category. In the War Games tab, players will be able to select Arms Race, Demolition, or the most popular War Game of Operation Hydra, Flying Scoutsman!

Competitive Map Pool
Today we’re adding Agency to the Competitive map pool, and making some additional adjustments.
The Competitive Matchmaking map pool previously contained every map in CS:GO, making it difficult for new or recently updated maps to stand out among the crowd of available options and generating poor matches as a result. To address these problems, the least-played maps will no longer be featured in official Competitive Matchmaking. Over time, promising new or updated maps will enter the map pool, and less played maps will continue to be removed.

Casual Map Groups
To give players’ favorite maps a better chance of winning the vote, maps in the Casual game mode have been redistributed into new groups based on overall playtime. Some of the least-played maps have been removed from the pool, and some new maps have been added: Austria, Shipped, Agency, and Insertion. As with the Competitive Matchmaking map pool, the Casual map pool and map groups will be updated over time.
