Trades Hall gets a new roof

Last week Axcess Demolition removed all the asbestos from the building and then the boys from Torquay Roofing put a brand new roof on the 80 year old building. Now it is protected for another 80 years.

The Trades Hall Restoration Project is now in full swing. Repairs to the fire stair begin shortly and the sanding of the internal stairs and floors will take place over the mid year break. A new window has been installed in the executive room giving it badly needed air and light. And if all the funds come in as hoped then repainting will finish off the restoration.

Come along and check out the restoration progress at the President's Night (xmas BBQ) on Tuesday 8th December. Starting 5pm and finishing late.

The GTHC Women Unionists Network Annual Award for Women honours a female union member(s) from the Geelong region who makes or has made outstanding efforts to promote women’s participation in the union movement.

The criteria for the Award are:
i an active union member;
ii outstanding service as a Delegate, EEO Delegate, OH&S Delegate;
iii active Women Unionists Network Committee member and/or other union or GTHC committee member, where they work to promote and encourage women’s participation in union activities;
iv other outstanding service to women unionists.
v outstanding contribution to a union campaign

Nominees must meet at least two of the above criteria

Process
Nominations will open at the Women Unionists Network Committee meeting in November each year and close the first week in February of each year.

The Women Unionists Network Committee will nominate a panel of three people consisting of the Geelong Trades Hall Secretary and two women nominated from the Women Unionists Network.

The Panel will assess the nominations and make a consensus decision on the basis of the selection criteria. The panel will have the option of seeking further information about a nominee if required. Where consensus cannot be reached a vote will be taken.

The winner will be decided by the Panel and will be final.

The Panel will inform the Women Unionists Network Committee at the first meeting in February of each year.

The winner will be notified once the final decision is made.

The Award will first be presented in 2009 and will be awarded annually at the Geelong Trades Hall Labour Day dinner.

Protest to support Ark Tribe

Ark Tribe faces a jail sentence of up to six months or a $22,000 fine for allegedly failing to attend a compulsory interrogation by the ABCC in 2008.

The next court hearing is in Adelaide on Friday 30 October.

In solidarity with Ark there will be a protest held in Geelong this

Friday, 30th October at 9.30am outside the Federal Government Member, Richard Marles, office. 17a Yarra Street, Geelong

The protest will be addressed by Noel Washington, Vice President Victorian CFMEU. All supporters are welcome to come along and demand an end to industry cops and unjust coercive powers.

Senator Piedad Córdoba is the principal figure behind a peace movement that has helped to free civilian hostages caught up in the fighting between the government and guerrilla forces. Senator Cordoba is opposed to the military solution to the armed confilict.
She has spoken out in opposition to the administration of President Uribe and its current policy of fighting for peace by attacking the guerrillas with the nation’s military. Instead she proposes a dialogue and humanitarian exchange of prisoners as the way to move forward.

$4000 for Cancer Council - Girls Night In.

The Geelong Trades Hall Women Unionists Network again supported the Cancer Council of Victoria by holding a ‘Girls Night In’ on Tuesday night.

Geelong Trades Hall Vice President Ms Christine Couzens said “the Women Unionists Network held the annual event at the Geelong Trades Hall, which included an auction, raffle and a variety of stalls.

Many Unions and Geelong Businesses donated items to raffle and auction on the night and some also set up stalls with 10% of all sales being donated to the Cancer Council, their generosity is greatly appreciated. The money raised on the night funds research into women’s cancers, she said”.

Ms Couzens said “the group of women unionists raised almost $4,000 on the night with the total amount going directly to the Cancer Council of Victoria. This is a fantastic result and we are all really proud to have been a part of such an important fundraiser”.

Re: Ongoing campaign re national OHS “harmonisation” process.

Dear Comrade

Following the deliberations of the last Executive Council (9/10) and the well attended all affiliates meeting (14/10) re above, please be advised:

· Updated material regarding outstanding issues is being prepared (re lobbying politicians and general campaigning).

· A lunch-time rally will be held of OHS reps attending the annual HSR’s Conference: 1 pm Wednesday 28 October 2009 outside the venue adjacent ‘Polly Woodside’ Yarra River South Bank.

· A proposal for VTHC campaign funds to be used for radio ads will be presented at the next Executive Council (23/10).

· Community groups and health organisations to be invited to join in the ongoing campaign.

Fly the banners - Defend Ark Tribe

A new banner has been launch at Trades Hall as part of the Rights On Site campaign to defend Ark Tribe and to get rid of the Australian Building Construction Commission.

Ark Tribe is a SA construction worker facing 6 months jail - charged with not attending an interview with the ABCC.

The banner was made by local Geelong construction workers and now hangs on the front of Geelong Trades Hall under the Latin slogan Labor Omnia Vincit which means "togther workers conquer all".

Delegates Meeting Summary

A Delegates and Safety Reps report back meeting about the OH&S Harmonisation Campaign was held on Tuesday 15 2009 at Geelong Trades Hall.

Reports were given by Geoff Fary (ACTU Ass. Secretary) and Tim Gooden (GTHC Secretary)

40 delegates were in attendance from the AWU, AEU, ASU (Service) ASU (Clerks), AMWU (metals), ANF, CFMEU, CPSU, ETU, HSU and MUA.

Following Resolution was passed unanimously as a recommendation to GTHC. The same resolution was put to Geelong Trades Hall that same night and after debate was also passed unanimously.

“That this meeting calls on all Victorian Unions and the ACTU to take immediate direct action in the form of mass protest against the watering down of Victorian safety laws. This action should occur no later than the middle of October to have the greatest affect.”

New Time for Geelong Trades Hall Council Meetings

Tuesday 29 September at 5.30pm is the Geelong Trades Hall ordinary Delegates Meeting. Level 3 Council Room, 127 Myers St. All delegates are asked to attend and all union members are welcome to come along and ask questions. Please note the new start time of 5.30. This is for a trial period to see if it is a more convenient time for delegates. This trial will continue until the end of the year.

Geelong Protest Against Reducing Safety Laws

A 1000 workers marched today in Geelong to tell local State and Federal Politicians that reducing Safety Laws will not be accepted in Victoria. The march was made up of mainly construction and manufacturing workers from the CFMEU, AMWU, ETU, PTEU, with strong representations from the UFU, MUA, also the ANF, AWU, CPSU (SPSF) AEU (TAFE), ASU, TCFUA and HSU.

Resolutions were passed calling on the GTHC to hold a mass delegates meeting on
Tuesday 15 September 2009 at 4.00pm for a report back on the campaign.

Thanks to all who helped today – hopefully this is the beginning of another successful campaign – workers lives are too important for anything less.

The Workers Win

Steak Gate is over. Yes, that's right Peter and Mick have both been reinstated
(now spelt rein-steaked) back at work in their old jobs.

An agreement was reached late yesterday in the Industrial Relations Commission. All Workers supporting the campaign met this morning with the Australian Services Union and voted to accept the agreement.

Geelong Trades Hall congratulates Mick, Peter the ASU and all the community and workers that supported the campaign - well done.

Council Workers Strike against SteakGate

This poster was created today on the picket line when Council workers walked off the job for 24hrs in protest over work mates being sacked for helping the community by filling in a pot hole and later receiving a sandwich for their help. A ridiculous situation that has become know as "SteakGate".

Rally at the City Council Meeting tonight. 6.45pm, 11th August 2009.

Come along and demand that Council reinstate workers unjustly and harshly sacked for doing a good deed. The Mayor and the Councilors may think this situation is a joke but there are two hungry families now because of Council incompetence and the rest of the world thinks the Geelong City Council is a joke.

Don't accept this injustice. Come to the Council meeting and let them hear the loud demands of Geelong workers.

Urgent call for Rally Tonight

Hi all,

There was a good turnout of workers and supporters this morning at the protest rally to defend 2 sacked ASU Geelong City Council workers. Management have got the message that these sackings are unacceptable and a gross abuse of natural justice.

Now we need to tell the City Councillors that they can’t ignore abuses of power within the City Council. The protest meeting this morning called for and endorsed a second rally for tonight, 6.30pm outside the City Council Meeting on little Malop St. Geelong.

Public question time at the Council meeting is at 7.00pm and we want to make sure the Councillors understand that what they have allowed is wrong and they must act to remedy the situation.

So please pass this onto all Geelong People that care about each other and what happens to our workers and asked the to bring along their families and pets etc.

New President elected and first women Assistant Secretary

Geelong Trades Hall has elected a new team at its biannual elections last night.

Mr David Ball, Maritime Union of Australia, was elected president. David works on the Geelong docks and has been a delegate to Trades Hall for the last 4 years.

This election also marked an important mile stone for women. Ms Colleen Gibbs from the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union was elected as the Assistant Secretary, the first women to hold such a position at Geelong Trades Halls.

The vice presidents are Danny Timmers from the electrical Trade Union and Christine Couzens from the Australian Services Union.

Tim Gooden, Trades Hall Secretary, said. “The new team represents a new and younger generation of workers coming through to the leadership of the union movement. This is important at a time of new industrial laws and a new economic period. Change presents many challenges and I am confident that new leaders coming through the union movement today can meet the challenges and improve the lives of all workers now and into the future.”
