Vale Frank Self

Frank Self, a former Trades Hall President and Industrial Organiser with the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union, passed away on Sunday.

It is with sadness and sympathy to Frank's family an hearing of the passing of one of our best trade unionist. Frank was a great supporter of the working class and right to the end he was still trying to recruit union members.

Frank's funeral will be:
1.00pm Tuesday 26 July
Mt Duneed Crematorium

Followed by snacks at the Grovedale Hotel at 2.00pm

Vale Helen Proud

Geelong Trades Hall Council is deeply saddened by the loss of our executive member, Helen Proud. Helen passed away during the night. Helen was a life member of the Health Services Union and a delegate who served on Council for nearly 20 years. Helen has been a past president of Council.

Our deepest condolences go out to Helen’s family and friends. Helen was a wonderful trade unionist that was never shy to speak her mind. There are not many people around that didn’t have Helen’s soup on a picket line or lockout. She will be sadly missed.

Life Membership for over 20 years of dedication

Anne Morrison, Office Manager for Geelong Trades Hall, was awarded life membership of the Australian Services Union. Anne was awarded the award on Friday 18 March along with a certificate of appreciation From Geelong Trades Hall for dedicated service.

Geelong Woman Unionist of the Year 2010

Trades Hall Celebrates Restoration

Geelong Trades Hall Celebrated the completion of the major restoration works last week. Celebrations were in keeping with tradition i.e. having a party. A commemoration plaque was unveiled by comrade Brian Boyd, Secretary of Victorian Trades Hall Council. Old and young came from far and wide to celebrate the 80 year old building. Unions that contributed to the restoration fund had their named embossed on the wall and received commemorative tokens made from 80 year old red gum that used to be part of the old fire escape.

The major restorations consisted of asbestos removal, a new roof, rewiring, fire escape and painting. Tim Gooden, Geelong Trade Hall Secretary, said. "Now the building is protected for future members for another 80 years".

Trades Hall host Cyclones

The Australian cycle racing team was in Geelong last week to compete in the 2010 UCI road cycling world championships. They performed well with Gold, Silver and bronze medals.

The team ran operations from Geelong Trades hall which was situated in the middle of the action.

The Hall was offered to the team as a gesture of support for the team but also because Cadel Evans is not only a world champion but also a local. The team managers accepted the offer earlier this year and were very grateful for the support.

Tim Gooden, Trades Hall Secretary said, “We offered the hall as a way of helping. Unions throughout history have been involved in local community sport, in fact some sports would not have succeeded if it were not for the gains made by unions – the 40 hour week is a classic example. I’d like to think we helped to make a difference”.

Union Air returns to old time slot

UnionAir, the tades hall radio show, is in its fifth year. During the football session it has been broadcast at 10.00am on Saturdays. Now that the GDFL has finished for the year - UNIONAIR is going back to the 12 NOON time slot starting this Saturday.

UCI Bike Race
28 September – 2 October

Dear Comrades

Due to the second largest TV event in the world being held in Geelong, yes it is a bike race,Geelong Trades Hall will be operating on different arrangements to normal during this week. Please take note of the following.

• Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday I will be around the office from 7am to 7pm.
Wednesday the office will be closed. I can also be contacted on the Saturday and Sunday.
• The lower Hall and rear car park will be closed and only used by the Australian Racing Team.
• The Trades Hall Ute will stay here for emergency use of union organisers.
• Discussions are taking place now with different union organisers to see who can cover which side of the town in the event of an emergency on a site or a dispute flare ups in a workplaces. I will send out details shortly.
• Please add at least one hour to your travel times to get to planed meetings.
• Do not expect to be able to get across town on these dates.

Women Unionist of the Year Award

Annual Award for Women Unionists 2010

The GTHC Women Unionists Network Annual Award for Women honours a female union member(s) from the Geelong region who makes or has made outstanding efforts to promote women’s participation in the union movement.

The criteria for the Award are:
i an active union member;
ii outstanding service as a Delegate, EEO Delegate, OH&S Delegate;
iii active Women Unionists Network Committee member and/or other union or GTHC committee member, where they work to promote and encourage women’s participation in union activities;
iv other outstanding service to women unionists.
v outstanding contribution to a union campaign

Nominees must meet at least two of the above criteria

Process
Nominations will open at the Women Unionists Network Committee meeting in August each year and close the first week in February of each year.

The Women Unionists Network Committee will nominate a panel of three people consisting of the Geelong Trades Hall Secretary and two women nominated from the Women Unionists Network.

The Panel will assess the nominations and make a consensus decision on the basis of the selection criteria. The panel will have the option of seeking further information about a nominee if required. Where consensus cannot be reached a vote will be taken.

The winner will be decided by the Panel and will be final.

The Panel will inform the Women Unionists Network Committee at the first meeting in February of each year.

The winner will be notified once the final decision is made.

The Award will be awarded annually at the Geelong Trades Hall Labour Day dinner.

Barwon Health is not worried about "a little bit of asbestos"

When is a little bit of asbestos OK? Well, according to Barwon Health's statment in the Geelong Adveritser on Wednesday 18 August - it must look like this. These photos are of the buildings in front of McKellar Nursing Home that Barwon Health gave the Rotary Club to refurbish, but they are full of asbestos. After Geelong Trades Hall raised the issue, professionals were engadged to clean up but absestos still remains in the building. Geelong Trades Hall is still trying to find out which workers were exposed so they can be made aware of their legal rights.

According to Barwon Health's thinking maybe - a little bit of asbestos only cuases a little bit of cancer - no problem eh?

Another Successful Women's Dinner

80 Geelong unionist attended the Annual Geelong Trades Hall Women's Unionist Network Dinner. Guest speaker, Lisa Darmanin, Victorian Assistant Secretary of the Australian Services Union, explain the Equal Pay campaign in the welfare Sector.

The dinner was also the launch of the Domestic Violence is a workplace issue campiagn. Chris Couzens, Trades Hall Vice President, eplained the camapign to get leave clauses inserted into workplace agreements that recognise domestic violence and provide speacial leave.

All in all a good night was had by all.

Ford maintenance workers strike

Join the Ford workers from the ETU and AMWU metals division on Monday 10 May at 7.00am for breakfast. Workers are taking 24hrs protected action for a new EBA.

If you can't make the breakfast pop in anytime during the day or join the afternoon protest for a sing-a-long between 4.00pm to 5.00pm

The Ford workers have done a lot for others in Geelong over the years, it is now time to show them solidarity.

Unionist show solidarity to Ark Tribe

On Thursday 15 April Geelong unionist hosted a reception for Ark Tribe. Ark is facing 6 months in gaol for refusing to be interrogated by the Australian Building and Construction Commission. Ark was invited to a meeting of supporters by the Geelong Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union Shop Stewards Committee.

Messages of solidarity and commitment of support were presented to Ark at the reception. Geelong workers from several unions including nurses and teachers posed with Ark for a group photo in front of Geelong Trades Hall under a banner which reads Defend Ark Tribe. The banner also includes an image of the famous Ned Kelly, a much loved symbol of struggle against unjust authoritarianism. Ark faces court on June 15 in South Australia.

In the mean time Building workers will rally in Melbourne on April 28 for International Workers Memorial Day to honor workers that have lost their lives while selling there labour to the bosses. The Victorian Building Industry Group of unions will also high light on the day that since the ABCC was created to harass building workers and their unions workplace injuries and deaths have increased.
