I'll be sipping mojitos in The Woodlands with friends telling war stories of the days events. But tomorrow we begin the deep dive into training...not that I haven't been training hard but now we start in on time trials, big bricks and long runs. Thank God I got my rest during this past rest week.

My mom was in town after going to Hawaii with my sister and her family to Kauai and they got back to CA just the day after the tsunami hit Hawaii. nervous? Yes, so much so that when I found out as I was on my way to o'dark thirty masters practice that I phoned my madre around 2:30 Hawaii time. The woman doesn't party like she used to, I definitely woke her! But the fam is OK, back safe and sound, no worse for the wear. So we hung out, I rode with my sister for the first time since she got pregnant (Thanks Adie!!) and we ate good food and enjoyed each other. She leaves on Wednesday and I am back to work!

I'm sitting here writing as Mark is sick and coughing up his lungs, while working tirelessly on DODOcase and their launch for the iPad2 case. I have lots to look forward to though, we leave for the Tour of Flanders next week and I am over the moon excited. Opportunity of a (cycling) lifetime, I am hoping to kiss Tom Boonen! We will ride the amateur "ronde" the day before the race and then watch and party with Belgium's the next day. We have signed up for the epic, full course f 250 k's, as Bob Roll would say and I am prepping for an epic day on the bike. Long, most likely raining and full of cobbles. The Scott Addict will be so happy! While there, I will continue to train for Texas and we will visit family in London. I also plan on doing a bit of non workout wear shopping at Topshop. This will be great.

So my bags are packed for tomorrow's track night and the bike is on the trainer for intervals in the morning.

Gearing up For 2011...Here we GO!!!

So it's been a LONG time since my last blog, so let's just call this the beginning. 2010 was amazing, I did my first Ironman and managed to qualify on that great day for the Ironman World Championships. This was another great day, so much so that I am now training again for an Ironman in May, this time in Texas in the hopes to get to go back to Hawaii for the second time in as many tries.

The road to 2011 started after a much needed 6 week vacation from training after 70.3 Worlds in November. That race was not what I was looking for as a way to end the season, but I just think back to the awesome day in Hawaii and that tides me over. It really does help to have such good memories to call upon during tough sessions or mornings when sleeping in sounds much better than getting up and heading to the pool!

I am back this year as the captain for Team Pacific Bicycle's womens squad and I couldn't be happier with the shop. Dave (shop owner) and all of the guys are incredibly helpful for any of my bike needs and they keep me looking good all season long on the roads. I am also pleased to announce that I am working with TYR this year, so be on the lookout for my reviews of their products that I am eargerly awating...next week will be like Christmas when I get the package!! Gel Ladder continues to be my product of choice for carrying my nutritional needs on the bike, really what a simple and efficient product! Off the bike, DODOcase keeps my Kindle protected so that I can travel with as many books as I like...check them out!

Training has been going very well and I have even told coach Mark that "I think I can handle a bit more"...to which he responds, let's just continue on the path we're on and see how that goes, OK? Well we will get to see how it goes on April 17th at the season opener The Reservoir Triathlon in San Jose.

Promises to blog more this year and tell stories from the road. Looking for ward to seeing you all out there!

Gel Ladder Rider Hailey Curtner takes 1st at San Jose International

Sunday June 21st was a great day for Gel Ladder rider Hailey Curtner
who took 1st place in her division at the San Jose International
Triathlon and 6th woman overall. Mark and I arrived on Friday to warm temperatures and
a fantastic guest host who would also race on Sunday.
Saturday was bike drop off day and my head just didn't seem to have
the focus I knew I was going to need! I had my traditional pre-race
meal of a giant burrito and was ready for bed.
Wake up Sunday morning and are headed to transition, and as any good
California girl, had on my jacket before headed out the door. Big
mistake...at 5AM it was already 72 degrees and 90% humidity. I've
been in SF too long and don't remember my mid western roots. At least
there was cloud cover, maybe it would stay? More on that later :)
The swim was a point to point and apparently when measured with a GPS
was actually 1.4 miles...no wonder it felt a little long and all the
times were off. Needless to say I was already behind my target time.
No worries- onto the bike and out onto the course that took us through
the swamp lands of Louisiana, it really is pretty. I was thinking
how I was gonna crush the bike course, it's super flat- I should be
able to hammer right? WRONG, the wind took hold and the last 10 miles
seemed like an eternity. (note to self...positive self talk will get
you through, too bad that talk came a day later!) And during these ten
miles, I started re-writing my training plan wondering where I went
wrong.
I get off of the bike and have a tough time starting the run. Due to
the heat around mile 30 on the bike all I could handle was water and
getting down a gel was torture! I've never had this problem before so
it was causing some distress. After a few miles on the run I run into
Mark who tells me not to worry about it just keep pushing. I ask how
am I doing? He tells me just to keep running which to me means
"bad"...but I later find out he just didn't know cause at that time
there was only one girl ahead of me! Who knew :) So I became the
best customer the aid stations have ever seen, screaming out my order
for water 15 yds from the aid station and dousing myself and drinking
all I could.
Mark kept getting stopped on the run course by the police, as it was a
closed course. A cop asked Mark if he was an official part of the
race and he said "of course i am the team photographer!) He is all
access all the time! Super supported with great pics of ladies in Pink!
A gal passes me and takes over 2nd place around mile 7. Mark tells me
to continue to push and I told him to "be nice to me!". It pays off
though, as I ran better in those last few miles and she slowed down.
I could see her up ahead, but just didn't get the gap closed. Don't
worry I will smoosh her at World's! I crossed the finish line in
5:06, not exactly my goal time but I'll take a podium spot and a slot
to Clearwater thank you very much :)
Louisiana was great, the attitude of the people down there was
fantastic, everyone was incredibly helpful!
Next up: wildflower and some speed specific training in the heat!
Hailey

Gel Ladder Rider Hailey Curtner takes 3rd at Ironman 70.3 New Orleans

Gel Ladder Rider Hailey Curtner takes 3rd Place and Qualifies for the
70.3 World Championships at the biggest Iromman event held so far.
Over 3000 competitors braved the head, humidity and wind to complete
the course in New Orleans LA.
Hailey, equipped with the Gel Ladder on her bike took the 2nd fastest
bike time on her way to the podium. I have been using the gel ladder this entire season, starting off at Wildflower (14th place), then on to UVAS (3rd), Escape from Alcatraz (8th), Vineman (6th), and finally at Big Kahuna (2nd) this weekend. The gel ladder holds up to 5 gels which is perfect for my calorie needs on race day. It is so much lighter than a Bento box and looks a ton better!

Just want to say thanks Gel Ladder for helping me to a 2nd place finish this past weekend and for getting me to Clearwater world Championships in November!

Will keep you posted on World Champs results...

Hailey
