GUEST POST – Opulent Jewelers

The first sign something was wrong came from Google Search Console. Not from a customer, not from a sales dip — from a quiet line in the disavow report that said referring domains had jumped by several hundred in a week. None of them had ever been heard of. None of them were jewelry sites. And all of them, on closer inspection, were linking to luxury jewelry retailers with the same coordinated pattern.

This is the new threat landscape for jewelry e-commerce. It doesn’t look like phishing. It doesn’t look like fraud in the traditional sense. It’s more patient, more technical, and most jewelers running their own e-commerce don’t realize it’s happening until search rankings start sliding for reasons that look like an algorithm change.

It’s called typosquatting paired with negative SEO. And it’s been quietly targeting luxury jewelry brands for at least eighteen months.

What it actually is:

Typosquatting is the practice of registering domain names that are minor misspellings of established brands. A single letter swap, a missing character, an extra one. The classic version — what most people think of when they hear the term — is fraud-focused. A fake domain that looks almost identical to a legitimate one, set up to steal credit cards or capture login credentials.

That’s not what’s happening here.

The new pattern is more sophisticated. The typosquat domains aren’t hosting fake storefronts. They’re not running phishing pages. In most cases, they aren’t hosting anything at all — they sit empty, parked, with zero outbound links and no content.

What they do have are inbound links. Thousands of them. All from spam-flagged sources. All built rapidly over weeks or months. All designed to construct a hostile backlink profile that Google’s algorithms can associate with the real brand the typosquat is mimicking.

“The attacker is exploiting how search engines understand brand identity,” quote from the owner of Opulent Jewelers, who has been monitoring this pattern in the luxury jewelry space. “Google doesn’t just look at links to your domain — it looks at the broader signal landscape around your brand name. If a domain that’s one letter off from yours has thousands of spam backlinks, that signal can bleed into how the real brand is evaluated.”

The damage doesn’t come from customers being confused. It comes from search rankings dropping, organic traffic declining, and the legitimate brand losing visibility on the queries it should own.

Why luxury jewelry specifically

The targeting isn’t random. There are reasons this particular industry has become attractive.

First, luxury pre-owned jewelry has high average order values. A 5% drop in organic traffic translates to real revenue loss when individual transactions run four or five figures. The attack’s economic impact compounds quickly.

Second, the keyword landscape is competitive but specific. Phrases like “pre-owned Cartier Love bracelet” or “authenticated Van Cleef Alhambra” have meaningful commercial intent and limited inventory of authoritative retailers ranking for them. Pushing a competitor down a single SERP position can shift real money.

Third, the authentication angle creates a vulnerability the attacker exploits. Authenticated luxury jewelry retailers build trust through detailed product descriptions, provenance documentation, and authentication content — all of which is content rich enough to be valuable in organic search. That value is what the attack is trying to undermine.

We started seeing the pattern intensify in late 2024. What looked initially like routine spam turned out to be coordinated. The attacker had infrastructure — link-spam services with names that openly advertised the manipulation, networks of compromised WordPress sites injecting commercial anchor text, aged-domain marketplaces that recycled the same hostile profiles across multiple targets.

How to spot it

Most jewelers will see the symptoms before they understand the cause. The early warning signs are visible in tools jewelers already use, but they’re easy to misread as something else.

In Google Search Console, watch for:

Spikes in disavowed referring domains week-over-week with no marketing campaign that would explain them

New URLs in the “Links to your site” report from domains you’ve never heard of, with anchor text matching your brand plus commercial terms (“buy [brand],” “discount [product]”)

Country/language mismatches in the geographic distribution of new links — sudden surges from regions you don’t sell to

Pages getting indexed that you didn’t create or link to internally

In Ahrefs or any backlink monitoring tool:

New referring domains classified as “spam” by automated detection

Referring URL paths that contain randomized hash strings or auto-generated patterns

Anchor text that includes your brand name combined with commercial keywords from industries you don’t operate in

Sudden inbound links from domains with extremely high outbound link counts (hundreds or thousands of unrelated outbound links — a hallmark of compromised sites)

On the typosquat side:

Domains registered with single-letter variations of your brand name (extra letter, missing letter, swapped letter)

New domains with these patterns showing rapid backlink growth despite hosting no content

Multiple variants of the misspelling cluster — not one typo domain but four or five, suggesting coordinated infrastructure

Domains appearing on aged-domain marketplaces for sale, with your brand name in the listing description

The clearest single signal is the combination: a misspelled version of your domain exists, hosts no content, and is accumulating referring backlinks from spam-flagged sources. That combination has no innocent explanation.

What to actually do about it

There’s no single fix. The defense is layered, and each layer addresses a different vector.

1. Build and maintain a Google Search Console disavow file.

This is the foundation. The disavow tool tells Google to ignore specific referring domains when evaluating your site. It doesn’t remove the links — it tells the algorithm to discount them. For sites under active attack, the disavow file needs to be updated regularly. Some retailers in this position are maintaining files with thousands of domains, refreshed weekly or monthly.

The disavow file is the only defensive tool that doesn’t require legal action and works at scale. Treat it as ongoing infrastructure, not a one-time submission.

2. Submit Google spam reports against the typosquat domains.

Google’s spam reporting form, at developers.google.com/search/help/report-spam-malware-phishing, lets you flag specific URLs with documented evidence. Two important constraints: the form forwards your submission text to the reported site owner if a manual action is issued, so don’t include personally identifying information. And select the right category — “paid links” is the most actionable for typosquatting + negative SEO patterns because the attacker is effectively buying backlinks to the typosquat domains.

These reports don’t trigger immediate takedowns. They contribute to Google’s broader spam detection signal over time.

3. Engage an IP attorney for UDRP or ACPA action.

If the typosquats are causing real damage, legal options exist. UDRP — Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy — is a WIPO process that can transfer or cancel cybersquatting domains. It typically takes 60-75 days and costs around $1,500 in filing fees plus attorney time.

ACPA — the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1125(d) — is a US federal court remedy that allows statutory damages of $1,000 to $100,000 per cybersquatted domain. ACPA is significantly more expensive and time-consuming than UDRP, but the damage award potential changes the economics for attackers.

Both UDRP and ACPA require establishing trademark rights in your brand name. Common-law rights from continuous commercial use are enough for UDRP, but federal trademark registration substantially strengthens both cases. If you’ve been operating under a brand name for years without registering it federally, that’s a gap worth closing — and it’s relatively inexpensive to fix.

4. Document everything.

The most underrated piece of defensive infrastructure is documentation. Screenshots of the typosquat domains’ WHOIS data. Ahrefs exports showing their referring profiles over time. Timeline records of when each variant appeared. This evidence is what makes UDRP cases winnable and what supports broader Google trust signals if you ever need to file a reconsideration request.

Keep records like you’d keep tax records. The legal and SEO value of the documentation only becomes clear in retrospect.

What not to do

A few common defensive instincts that actually make things worse:

Don’t try to take down the typosquat domains via Cloudflare phishing reports. Cloudflare specifically rejects typosquat reports under their phishing category, which they define narrowly as credential theft. Filing repeatedly under wrong categories doesn’t help.

Don’t buy the typosquat domains defensively. It’s tempting to think you can solve the problem by acquiring the misspellings yourself. But buying a domain that already has a hostile backlink profile means you inherit that profile. Even after the domain transfers to you, the spam links remain pointed at it. You’ve just become the new owner of a poisoned asset.

Don’t engage publicly with the attacker. If you identify the operator, the temptation is to call them out or threaten action publicly. This rarely helps. The attacker has invested in infrastructure they intend to keep using; public confrontation tends to accelerate their work rather than discourage it. Legal action through proper channels is the appropriate response.

The longer view

This is going to keep happening, and it’s going to get more sophisticated.

The typosquatting + negative SEO pattern works because it exploits the architectural reality of how search engines build trust. Brand association signals, referring domain authority, and link velocity are inputs Google can’t entirely separate from each other. Until the algorithms evolve to handle this attack class better, the defensive burden falls on individual brands.

For smaller jewelers — independent retailers, boutiques, single-location stores running an e-commerce site alongside a physical shop — the resource asymmetry is the hardest part. The attacker only needs to run scripts. The defender needs to maintain monitoring, build defensive tooling, and potentially engage legal counsel.

The good news: the techniques aren’t secret. The defensive playbook is knowable. And awareness in the industry — jewelers talking to each other about what they’re seeing, what’s working, what isn’t — is the single most effective protection that exists.

“The biggest barrier I see is that most jewelers don’t know this attack class exists. Once you know what to look for, the defense is straightforward. The work is in noticing.”

Today’s jewelry collection story comes from Cyndi of @TheFabNab – and you may notice that this is a feature I did a few years ago, so I know for sure she has added many more pieces to her collection since 2021, but I wanted to make sure her collection was showcased over here permanently. Cyndi has an incredible eye for edgy vintage pieces, with a big love for medallions, religious pieces, snakes and rubies! I know whenever I see one of her posts on Instagram I know it is her without having to look at who posted it, which I think is a sign of being a selective collective in the best way possible. Let’s dive in:

“I started collecting jewelry about 12-13 years ago. I’ve always been fascinated with all things jewelry related, and I even went through a phase of making jewelry from semi-precious beads, back in the day when those were all the rage.

But as for getting into the precious metals and stones, I started quite small actually… dipping my toes in with collecting antique stick pins. Even a dozen years ago, they could be had for a song (if only this were still true today) and so I would see their potential, after having them converted into more wearable items like a ring or a charm that I could rock on a daily basis and on a small budget. In fact, it’s still one of my passions to this day, reimagining a pin or brooch into something totally fresh and new. It’s actually the foundation of my Lucky Numbers + Talismans collection, taking existing Edwardian and Art Deco components and reinventing them to create a capsule collection of certain lucky numbers that are meaningful and truly emblematic of the wearer. I’m a believer in destiny numbers and drawing upon their luck and bringing that good juju forth.”

“I definitely find myself gravitating to certain design elements over and over again. Something about them just draw me in and so I’m a total sucker for anything celestial, the moon and all the stars, particularly the H.Stern Genesis line, which I think they’ve done such a stellar job of recreating the antique stars, if you’ll pardon the pun. But of course, nothing beats a true antique star filled with charming old mine cut diamonds, glimmering within a darkened silver setting atop gold. Just perfection, really. Finding antique diamond wings make me feel like I can literally fly and I’m also continually enthralled by the Egyptian revival movement! Give me a juicy winged scarab and all the golden snakes in that gleaming, brushed buttery gold, please. And of course, I can never pass up a diamond encrusted pocket watch. I’m absolutely obsessed with their incredible beauty, down to the most miniature details.”

“I think what truly speaks to me about jewelry, beyond just the superficial glitter and beauty, is the personal connection it can connote. The idea behind being gifted or gifting that perfect piece for a special occasion really means that you truly will think of that moment each and every time you wear the piece. It becomes talismanic, to me, anyway, and feels almost like a layer of love that protects and shields you. Even if it means gifting that one special piece to yourself. I mean, how amazing to reward yourself for achieving a goal or to commemorate a personal victory and be able to be reminded of that on a daily basis? Nothing more empowering than that, in my mind.”

“It’s so hard to try to pick just one, but lately I feel naked without my Victorian era ruby spike that I had converted from an antique brooch. To me, it represents strength, courage, fidelity and loyalty… in short, all the things I aspire to be and to have. Continuing in my bid to constantly find inspiration in the old and make fresh again what is stale, I’ve recently started recreating this style, again from existing Art Deco pins, and turning them into spikes. New skins for the old ceremony, as it were. As the original Victorian ones are rarer than hens’ teeth and quite out of reach financially when they are to be found, I’m very happy to be able to offer these re-dreamt up pieces to the discerning collector who needs an edgy bit of toughness in their neckmess, as well as an item that can be their daily talismanic reminder that they are strong, they’ve got this. We all do. We’ve just got to dig deep and find our inner badass goddesses.”

“When I first started collecting, it was definitely EBay and my local antique shops, as that’s all I really knew at the time. One place I was lucky to explore early on was the famous Paris Flea, as it’s our most favorite city of all time and a place we started going to even before I started actively collecting jewelry. Over time, you learn the tricks of the trade, which is really mostly about building relationships with other dealers and finding the hidden gems of local shops as well as the spots to find all the special things a bit further away abroad. I think discovering Portobello was my all time favorite jewelry moment, especially as by that time, I’d made such wonderful friends via IG prior to going to London that I felt so welcomed and taken care of. I’ll never forget the extraordinary kindness of Ishy of @IshyAntiques, as he was ever the gentleman in showing me the ropes my first time around. Like so many others, I just adore him to bits and I cannot wait until our little jewelry gang can reunite at our trade shows again. And speaking of trade shows, they are what have brought into my life some truly amazing humans, actually. The Hillsborough Show, which is local to me is where I met my girls Cristina and Nicole @treasuresforliesel at our beloved Lenore Dailey’s booth. And my I met my trade show partners in crime Lindsey @parkavenueantiques and Laurie Geller @laurie.Geller at my first Vegas show. And of course, the Miami show is where I got to meet you and totally geeked out over that moment when you chose an opal ring from me… will never forget that. Jewelry and IG is what brought us together but what keeps us together, even though we’re far apart , is our mutual unending support, love and laughter. Couldn’t really do any of this without it.”

I’ve been collecting keys for years – not intentionally at first, but the ones that landed in my possession early on always had a special significance and almost “larger than life” aura. I was first gifted a gold key from my grandparents after one of their trips over to visit family in Italy. They would specifically pick out pieces for each one of their grandchildren, and that was meant to be mine. Another key that I treasure is one that my dad gifted my mom when they first started dating – a heart key with a tiny ruby set in the middle. Keys have always stood out as a motif and I’ve acquired them during points in my life when I need them most!

Fast forward to a few years ago when I was getting quite a few requests from designers to collaborate on designing a piece of jewelry. This was also around the time I went all-in on this key obsession and I was buying as many keys as I could find, building a key charm necklace. One immediate thing I noticed was not a lot of designers were making keys. I mostly found them when hunting for vintage jewelry, so that led me to think, hey why not reach out directly to designers and ask if they’d like to collaborate on a key design?!

As with any new idea, there were bumps in the road and I was so nervous to reach out at first. I wanted to incorporate design elements that were native to each designer I worked with – that part was vital and the foundation of the whole project. It was tough to be critical of designers when finalizing ideas but overtime I got better at that, which in turn created faster sell outs each time. I also honed in on what elements were important – like always having a rule on size and cost. I think keeping the batches limited is also important and we already have a few designs that are “retired” and won’t be remade.

I wanted to put together an “Official Checklist” of the keys so it lives somewhere online – so this blog post will act as such. I can’t believe I’ve done this many honestly and I am completely honored to work with each of these designers; all of whom were picked by me after admiring their work, their ethos, and what they bring to the jewelry industry. Let’s see if I can do this in chronological order:

1 – Kimberly Doyle Jewelry – this was the very first key collaboration! It was limited to 30 that were made total and this was also one of Kimberly’s “Karat Jack” charms where she packages her pieces like a prize found in a box of cracker jacks. It was so fun working with her on this – I remember she sourced the moonstones in Tucson and I thought it would be cool to set them with the points North-South to give it a little edge. Maybe someday we will bring it back but it will remain retired until then!

2 – Gem Gossip – the “Celestial Key” features cabochon cut sapphire, emerald and aquamarine and was created based on a key that I came across at auction several years ago that I was outbid on and will remain haunted by forever. I am actually happy that I recreated it with new size requirements because the original design was a lot bigger and I prefer the smaller scale. These are currently available on my website and are limited to 20 emeralds, 5 sapphires and 5 aquamarines. These will be retired once they sellout!

3 – Sister Sister Jewelry – the “Danielle” seashell key debuted summer 2024 and quickly became a seasonal favorite. Lisa, designer behind the brand, did a seashell element in a past design and we took that and made it into a key! It was awesome connecting with her thoughtful brand which aims to highlight resilient women in her life. Jewelry is powerful! This design was limited to 20 and is now sold out/retired, but we do offer a gemstone custom version after a client reached out wanting to customize it. So feel free to reach out!

4 – Yi Collection – this sapphire key debuted in June of 2024 and took an element I saw on a ring designed by Yi and incorporated it into a key. I’ve admired her pieces for awhile and it was so great working on this piece. We released it as a “made to order” item, so rather than having a limited run with it, it can be ordered at anytime and takes about 3 weeks to be made. You can order one today!

5 – Vance Davidson Jewelry – this key design was created based off Erin’s Rooted Collection, which I had purchased a pendant from her in January of 2024 and it only felt right to make a key version several months later. This design has been released several times since debuting due to its popularity. We started out using unique sapphires, some fun purple and pink milky and opalescent sapphires, along with blues and greens – we even did a couple spinels. Our latest restock used antique old mine cut diamonds which I sourced I sent to Erin, which totally changes up the look of the design. They are available here.

6 – Olivve NYC – designer Olivia creates jewelry using sequins as motifs and I love all of her designs. I knew a sequin key was necessary and I love how it turned out. This design debuted in the fall of 2024 and was limited to 15 total. They will retire once sold out! I have just a couple left.

7 – Svetlana Lazar – the magical “Wishing Well” key showcases Svetlana’s iconic Wishing Well setting, which features gemstones that look as though they have water moving beneath them! This unique illusion was invented in her studio and I was completely mesmerized when I saw them in person in NYC earlier this year. The first batch sold out quick and we recently restocked, with two still available.

8 – Mejia Jewelry – the “Sun Keeper” key was inspired by wanting to create a counterpart key to the celestial motif one and dying to create one focused around the sun. I knew Elise would be the perfect person to collaborate with this because she has an eye for design and gem stash with some unique stones! We’ve chosen some gemstones I’ve never worked with before – like yellow beryl, sunstone, tsavorite, blue-green tourmaline, and iolite. We sold out of our first batch and have ONE left from our second batch.

9 – Twyla Dill – the “Golden Crochet Lace” key debuted in August of 2025. Twyla creates unique jewelry by hand crocheting lace and then creating a mold, and casting the mold into real gold! Her work blew me away when I saw it in person earlier this year. I knew we had to make a special key using her technique, and after several ideas and sketches, this incredible design was born. The first batch sold out quickly and another batch is in the works.

10 – LeConte Jewelry – the “Vanity” key debuted most recently and sold out in record time. Designer behind the brand, Eunmi Han, is highly inspired by brush strokes, painting, art; with her Vanity collection she aims to capture the essence of framed artwork, like the kind you see in museums. I love her idea of “framing” a gemstone as if it were a painting, which is exactly what this key charm does – frames each gem because each stone is a work of art from Mother Nature. Hoping to have a restock soon!

Today’s Jewelry Collection Story comes from Allison of @HollywoodGold – a fun Instagram account I love following, who posts mostly personal collection pieces, and has a unique, eclectic style and a not-so-furry friend named Pete (a camera-loving rescue bearded dragon). Her style is truly her own, which is so enchanting when you come across someone that is totally original and themselves. I love her love for 70s chunky gold and the lunar landing, both of which are heavily prevalent in her collection. Aside from her lizard child, she has two human children and three rescue dogs. I’m so excited to feature her collection, so without further ado, take it away Allison:

“I did not have the financial means to collect jewelry until I got married and even then, the beautiful pieces I had were gifts from my husband. I couldn’t imagine something so indulgent as buying myself jewelry, though I very much enjoyed admiring it and learning about it. As my knowledge about jewelry was growing, I also became increasingly interested in creating a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle for my family. Over time, we made lots of changes in our household and I started buying used clothes more often than new clothes. In that process I came across beautiful vintage pieces at a fraction of the price of new jewelry. I looked closer and fell in love with the design and craftsmanship of jewelry of other eras. The rest, as they say, is history. I have a couple of antique pieces but I am a true vintage girl at heart. I do not hesitate to buy my own jewelry now and seventies gold is my sweet spot.”

“I only have two motifs that I intentionally collect – commemorative lunar landing medals and jewelry, and rings with the initial A. The Van Cleef moon landing pendant is my white whale. I almost don’t want to find one because they are so expensive that I’d have to do something outrageous to pay the bill. The ‘A rings’ are also tricky because I have such little fingers and I will only buy vintage or antique. Especially when it comes to signets (oh how I love a signet), I mostly see pieces intended for men. Inevitably my favorites are size 10 or 11. I have a pretty solid collection now – I like wearing As on all of my fingers (except thumbs) – but I am forever looking. While I have been conscious about developing those two themes, it’s funny how other motifs just “happen.” Over time, I have also picked up a number of Guadalupe medals. I also cannot resist a good vintage nudie.”

“I’m very invested in personal expression from all angles, ranging from everyday freedom speech to the creative output of artists to the way we adorn ourselves. The clothing I choose, the jewelry I wear… it’s part of a bigger picture. As much as I love jewelry, what I really can’t get enough of is style. For me, style is having a perspective. It’s how one lives their life.”

“I shop almost exclusively online because my schedule does not permit much more than that. Every now and again I will get myself to Pickwick or A Current Affair in LA to see jewelry in person and I never regret it. That said, the pleasure I get from scrounging around the internet from my couch while watching a Dodgers game is unmatched. Like so many other collectors you’ve featured, I have some solid ebay finds in my jewelry box but at this point, I buy mostly from sellers and other collectors on Instagram. @thefabnab loves rubies and I do too so I watch her instagram like a hawk! For chains, my go-to is @a_golden_gem.”

With gold prices at an all-time high, now is the time to get serious about the type of accessories you’re buying. Gold-plated, tarnished cheap junk is not the look, and although it may be less expensive, it ends up being worthless in the end. Fine jewelry made of karat gold is an investment that will always be worth money as long as gold continues to be a valuable precious metal that has a role in financial markets.

Whether you’re starting from scratch or already have some fine jewelry, I’m glad you’re here! Creating a capsule wardrobe with jewelry is smart in so many ways – the point is to invest in quality pieces (not quantity), that can be worn in many ways, for many occasions and remain timeless. A capsule collection of jewelry does not need to be “basic” in any way, shape or form! They’re your BASIS which you can build off from and should never be pieces you don’t like. So let’s pick a capsule wardrobe you love!!

Here are my tips for building a fine jewelry capsule wardrobe:

1 – Make a list of each category of jewelry that you want to build essentials for: necklaces/chains, earrings, bracelets, rings, other (if there’s a category you don’t like or wear, don’t include it!)

2 – Break down each category by describing or finding photos of pieces that speak to you within each one. For example, earrings: what types of earrings do you like for yourself or your style? Hate hoops? Hate studs? Only like dangles? Write that down!

3 – Once you have your list, add 2-4 examples under each category. Again, examples like photos are really helpful. Choose pieces that are great quality, reputable brands, natural gemstones, karat gold.

4 – Then build your collection slowly, after figuring out which is the most important. You can rank your list so you know which pieces to buy in which order!

5 – Once you’ve built out your collection of essential staples, you can rotate seasonally or add pieces as trends change/sell ones you don’t wear anymore.

Here is an example of my personal fine jewelry capsule wardrobe:

Necklaces/Chains:

1 – a long solid box chain or mini mariner, 20″+

2 – a thick semi-hollow chain that’s more of a statement

3 – a short simple chain like a mini figaro or cable link

4 – a unique fancy chain that’s different, maybe enamel

Earrings:

1 – a perfect pair of gold hoops

2 – studs for secondary piercings

3 – a geometric, statement pair

Bracelets:

1 – a plain bangle that has the perfect fit

2 – a unique all-gold line bracelet

3 – a diamond line bracelet

Rings:

1 – perfect pinky ring (antique baby signet ring)

2 – all diamond statement ring

3 – all gold stacker bands

4 – something with color

Other:

1- ear cuffs, connectors, dog clips, watch

I get this question frequently since I sell both solid and semi-hollow fine jewelry. I personally collect both kinds – I think each has importance in a collection for different reasons. I’m going to share the break down of my reasoning as to why I prefer one or the other, some examples and other buying tips for you so you can start your fine jewelry collection off right!

The difference between solid and semi-hollow jewelry:

Solid gold pieces, in my definition, are jewelry made of karat gold and completely solid throughout. Semi-hollow jewelry is also made of real, karat gold (not plated) but crafted with a hollow interior – almost like a “tube.” You can often create the same piece of jewelry with a solid version and a semi-hollow version, and they will look exactly the same. It is only until you hold the piece in your hand, you will notice a huge different in weight and in price! If it is a vintage semi-hollow piece, it will often have dents from wear. Denting is not preventable unless you truly never wear the piece!!

Why I prefer solid gold:

-Less likely to dent

-Holds up extremely well overtime, even if you don’t take the best care of it

-An investment piece that will probably increase in value overtime

-I love the heft of a solid gold piece, like a security blanket, I can tell when I’m wearing it that it’s there

– Can be resized easily or repaired easily

When do I prefer solid gold:

-When buying rings and bracelets, I prefer solid gold pieces and not semi-hollow. These are the two categories for me that get the most “abuse” as I’m always banging my hands around and hitting my rings and bracelets often. This is not to say I never buy semi-hollow rings or bracelets, I’m just pickier about it, I have to REALLY like the style, and I will totally take better care (like only wearing them for special occasions).

-When buying workhorse chains that will hold lots of charms, big pendants or get a ton of wear.

Why I prefer semi-hollow jewelry:

– Less expensive than solid gold, but still REAL gold

-Lighter in weight, so you can wear big/bold pieces without weighing you down (especially cool for earrings)

-If there is a specific trend that I want to buy into but can’t afford to invest in a solid gold version, I like buying it in semi-hollow

When do I prefer semi-hollow pieces:

-When buying necklaces (bold chains) and earrings – I don’t think I own a single solid gold earring since the weight of earrings really bothers me! I like to be able to wear semi-hollow hoops, bold dangles, etc for several hours in a day without my ears hurting. I love a big chain – but with the price of gold, solid and bold don’t really fit my budget, so I’m always looking to buy semi-hollow in this category (I just make sure to not sleep in them and take extra care).

Great examples of semi-hollow jewelry to buy:

Today’s Jewelry Collection Story comes from Andrea of @LaPlusCharmanteShop – I’ve followed her for awhile now and actually got to meet her in person when she did the vintage show that comes to Nashville every February. Her pieces that she was selling at the show were immaculate and SO unique, so I can’t imagine what her personal collection looks like. That’s when I realized she’d be perfect to feature here. Let’s sit back and intently admire Andrea’s collection and listen to her story:

“I’ve loved jewelry my entire life. My mom is passionate about Native American rights and sold jewelry by Native American makers when I was growing up. My dad collects gemstones. As long as I can remember, I have had a jewelry box and loved gemstones and jewelry.”

“Some motifs I collect: Lover’s Eyes. Hands. French baby brooches that were given to children to protect them from evil…and also to fasten their bibs.
I look for fine details, materials, and craftsmanship most of all. Things that couldn’t or wouldn’t be produced now because they’d be prohibitively expensive to make.”

“Jewelry is beautiful. It is meaningful. It is history you can hold in your hand and wear. My favorite place to treasure hunt is Paris! Astounding variety, knowledgeable dealers. Plus, in the rare event you don’t find anything you like…you’re in Paris.”

“Almost all of the pieces in my collection have an interesting story behind them. Antique jewelry and the stories around it help me feel connected to previous generations in a way that other forms of art don’t. That’s why my tagline on IG is “finding new guardians for old treasures.””

“Storage is my bête noire. I have changed it up throughout the years and now keep most of my collection at the bank. I have a small amount of “every day” jewelry in an elegant jewel box at home — an engagement present from some of my best girlfriends. Whenever I look at it, it reminds me of how much I love them.”

“My most sentimental piece – an antique signet ring with a hand-carved hardstone intaglio that says “Forget Me Not” in German script. The condition is perfect. And the ring itself is so unusual.
It appealed to me because I worked for a German company – Bertelsmann – at the beginning of my career. Whenever I wear it, I get major happy nostalgia for my 20s!
My every day wear: my wedding set. I never take it off. I even wore it surfing! Don’t worry – I had the prongs checked before I got in the water ”

Today’s Jewelry Collection Story comes from Hannah of @georgie_the_magpie – we have followed each other for SO LONG, I almost feel like she is part of my family! Hannah is an art teacher and loves to foster creativity in people through painting, drawing, sculpting, anything hands-on. She is a mom of two humans and two dogs. “Georgie” is one of her King Charles cavaliers, which is the name of her Instagram handle. I featured her collection a few years ago on Instagram, so now we are doing an updated version over here on the blog – take it away, Hannah:

“I have been collecting jewelry since the age of 12. My first pieces were all gifts from my Grandparents and Parents. My collecting journey started with a fascination with rocks and minerals, which led to an interest in gemstones. In kindergarten we lived near Penn State University and their museum. I would stare in wonder at the gems in the glass cases. Now I am almost 41 so I have been collecting for quite a while! I still have the first pieces I was gifted- tiny pearl studs, an amethyst ring and a pearl tin-cup set.”

“Some of my favorite antique pieces to collect are; old diamonds, charms with engraving, bands that are my size and crosses. I really love a charming old cut diamond with wonky hand cut facets and a bit of warmth to it. New diamonds just cannot compare. I also think it’s magical to find a ring in my size or a piece with meaningful initials. Something about the connection to the past owner is really special to me. Wearing these pieces is a way to continue their stories – even if they are a mystery to me. I always wonder who they were. I love collecting crosses because of their symbolism and their classic design.”

“I am an art teacher and a lover of nature. Jewelry is the perfect juxtaposition of these two worlds. Each piece is like a tiny, wearable, work of art while the gemstones and precious metals represent my appreciation of our Earth. When looking at jewelry as a piece of art things like; color, craftsmanship, balance and attention to detail are important to me. One thing I love about collecting on Instagram is being able to connect directly with so many independent jewelers. Just chatting, learning more about their process or working on custom designs together is such an amazing experience. I have found such inspiring and genuine friends in this space.”

“My favorite places to find antique and vintage jewelry pieces are from Instagram, sellers and collectors who sell their personal collection pieces, Etsy, various auction sites and secondhand sites like Poshmark. I’ve found some incredible pieces and some duds this way- but the good pieces outweigh the bad!”

“I have a gold daffodil charm that has a lot of meaning. Last December my Dad was in the ICU and later passed away. He was an avid gardener and it’s a hobby we shared. That same November he had sneakily planted daffodil bulbs all over my garden. Denise at Manor Jewels just happened to post this charm in the midst of his hospital stay. It’s the only one she’s ever posted- it was meant to be with me. I quickly snapped it up. Now every Spring the daffodils bloom in my garden, reminding me of my Dad. For all the other days I can wear my charm as a reminder of him.”

“My most sentimental piece is the pearl tin cup necklace and bracelet set my Dad got me for my sweet 16. I still distinctly remember opening the box as he told me the story about choosing it for me. They are so classic I still wear both often! I also have a tiny 3 stone diamond charm my husband got me when we were dating in high school . He worked so hard to save up for it and I treasure it to this day.”

Today’s Jewelry Collection Story comes from Amie of @roguevintagejewels – I met Amie several years ago when I was actively traveling all across the US visiting stores on my #JewelryRoadTrip. She worked at Alice Kwartler in NYC, one of my favorite stores I ever featured! Sadly the store has since closed, but it will remain as one of the most epic jewel-infested shops I’ve ever been to. Naturally, Amie is drawn to all things shiny and is now selling pieces as her own business – Rogue Vintage Jewels. She is based in NYC and has been doing a lot of shows, with one which happened a few months ago in Nashville which was awesome because I got to reconnect with her and see all her pieces in person! I’m excited to share her personal collection with you today, along with her story:

“How long have I been collecting? Do Ring Pops count? I’ve always been drawn to collecting little treasures—beads, sea glass, anything with a bit of history or charm. My career has always been in jewelry, but about eight years ago, I started seriously collecting. For the past year and a half, I’ve turned that passion into my full-time business.”

“Lately, I’ve been drawn to two very opposite things: engraved signet rings and spinner charms. That’s one of the best things about jewelry—it can be anything you dream of. So far, I’ve collected three or four ‘I Love You’ spinners and one that cheekily says ‘Go to Hell.’

I also have two signet pinky rings, both what I like to call ‘jewelry foster fails.’ One features a knight with a shield and a banner that reads Semper Fidelis. The other is the Montgomery family crest, with a banner below that says Garde Bien.

That last one? You might want to Google it yourself. Let’s just say deciphering the woman holding a severed head isn’t exactly straightforward. Ha!”

“This might sound cheesy, but jewelry has so many facets—literally and figuratively. I’m always learning. There’s science in it, art, history, chemistry, geology, gemology, and more. But above all, it’s the community. I’ve met incredible people from all backgrounds, and our love of jewelry has connected me to some of my close friends.”

“To be honest, I’m absolutely spoiled. At first, I was intimidated, but now I get to treasure hunt in New York City’s 47th Street Diamond District. It’s gritty and tough—I get heckled all the time, asked if I’m buying or selling as I walk up and down the street. Believe it or not, it’s still a very male-dominated space, even though so much jewelry is traditionally made for women.

Over time, I found my way and built trust — huge in this industry. Now, I get to sift through pound heavy bags of gold before it’s about to be melted-(yes, pounds of gold) and also step into offices where the jewels reach seven figures and beyond.

I also love treasure hunting online—eBay, Ruby Lane, and, of course, dreaming over Sotheby’s jewelry auctions.”

“One day, I was sifting through a scrap bag—basically a massive tangle of chains, like a ball of yarn but gold. As I moved a chunk of it, something solid started to peek through—a curved shape, like the top of a flower. I pulled on it, and suddenly, a large clover pendant slipped free from the tangle.

And then I just froze. It wasn’t like any clover I had ever seen—it was engraved with Scorpio symbols. I felt the tears well up instantly. A few years ago, I lost a very close family member suddenly on St. Patrick’s Day—my uncle, who was like a father to me. And he was a Scorpio.

It didn’t feel like chance. It was one of those rare moments where a piece just finds you.”

“May the jewelry gods forgive me—most of my collection ends up in little plastic baggies. Can someone please be The Home Edit for jewelry?

Charms are the hardest to store, probably because they come in so many shapes and sizes. And chains? I can’t even talk about it. I have no clue why organizing them both is such a struggle, but it is. Completely ridiculous.

That said, I do have a few of my special rings in a leather box lined with velvet and floral fabric from @goldenponyworkshop that I absolutely love.”

“My most cherished piece of jewelry isn’t the boldest or the most ornate—it’s a beautifully understated ID bracelet engraved with my daughter’s name.

The journey to have her wasn’t easy. After years of trying, she was born with the help of IVF at the height of the Covid-19 shutdown in April 2020—a time that was both terrifying and life-changing. I wear it everyday.”

It’s no secret that layering necklaces is a hot trend right now. Sure it looks easy — put on a necklace, add another, and then another. But is it though? Have you ever tried layering necklaces before? Wow, so hard. There’s like an artform to it — and then there’s the tangling factor — and the differing lengths. Ugh — way harder than first thought.

I’m about to reveal some necklace layering secrets I’ve been stashing away for years. Follow these easy rules and you’ll be on your way to the coolest, chicest, non-messy neck mess you’ve ever seen.

1. Start with a basic

This is the only time you’ll hear me ask you to be basic. I bet you already have a classic chain — you know the ones that usually come with a pendant or charm, typically 16″ or 18″ in length — yes, those! This will act as your foundation to your layered look. I suggest hanging sentimental charms from this chain; pieces from your travels, your favorite colors, anything that makes you happy. Please don’t wear something your ex-boyfriend gave you.

2. Add differing lengths

A key to a successful necklace look is wearing different length chains. Have you ever seen someone wearing 10 necklaces, all the same length? No, because it would be a tangled ball of hot garbage. I suggest buying these key lengths: choker, 16″, 18″, 20″, 24″, 30″ and in various chain styles, which leads to our next rule…

3. Add unique chain styles (differing textures)

More texture equals less tangle! Tattoo that into your mind, or on your body, that’s fine with me. But seriously, this is so important. There are so many unique chain styles out there, we encourage you to adopt some favorites and rock them. Figaro, mariner, ball, rope, snake, herringbone, paperclip, rolo…these aren’t just random words, they’re chain style names. Google them, learn them, love them.

4. Finish off with some symmetry

So you have your basic chain with some charms, a totally different style chain that’s either longer or shorter…now repeat this however many times you’d like. Once you’ve gotten a look you love, before you call it — add one more finishing touch, a bib-style, festoon, or station necklace. Symmetry is important with layering, so this style of necklace adds dimension both vertically and horizontally. We like a Cleopatra-style necklace for this or even a diamond-dangle station necklace.

Get creative and have fun with this! Looking on Instagram offers TONS of inspiration (I like the hashtag #neckmess or #gemgossipneckparty). Once you’ve gotten masterful of the above rules, start playing more with color-coordinating or creating themes. Good luck!!
