PRLog - June 28, 2015 - PASADENA, Calif. -- A life saved. A debt owed. A war fought. A life sentence in a case of gross injustice. The Klan and a family denounced. Repentance. Banishment. Forgiveness.

It came in a dream: this story, The Water Line, the likes of which you have never read. We know it's a bold statement but it's true. Pulitzer-nominated author of ten books and former Oprah guest, Gene Cartwright, was inspired to write this remarkable short story more than two years ago, after a dream that practically revealed it intact. He finally penned it a month ago.

The lives of two 13 year-old boys: David Earl Applewhite, white, and Henry Lee Davis, black, dramatically intersect during a holiday celebration near Selma, Alabama in 1953. You know the era, the times, the state of black and white in this country. Each lived in worlds separate and unequal, privileged and denied. David's father, who was one of the policemen on The Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965, inducted his son into the Klan at age of nine.

Emblems and symbols of a racist past and present were freely flaunted, and offered little reason for hope for a different future in Alabama or elsewhere in the Deep South. Yet Henry, his family and others clung defiantly to hope, risked life and limb to act, and pressed on.

What happened that hot July day joined Henry and David forever, without need for permission from either or blessings from others. They were bonded for life, yet never spoke a single word to each other then or until 17 years later.

In 1968, after both had served in Vietnam, the country erupted following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. This was five years after the slaying of Medgar Evers and four years after the murders of Shwerner, Chaney and Goodman in Philadelphia, Mississippi—Ronald Reagan's first campaign stop following his GOP nomination in 1980.

In 1970, the lives of David and Henry came together in a way no one expected, and one that brought suffering on both sides of the color line that lasted fifty years, until the year 2020.

Yes, 'The Water Line' takes us forward, both chronologically and hopefully morally. Central to the story is the undimished love of soft-spoken but steel-spirited Sarah Davis for a husband she could not touch or hold in her arms.

The ending no one will see coming is elevated and illuminated with an example of love and forgiveness no one could have dared imagine.

The Story:

In upper North Central Texas, along I-20, 16 year-old Amy Jo Rideout has gone missing—believed kidnapped by 46 year-old Tommy Lee Raymond—a shiftless, worthless, mother-moocher. Word is, Ol' Tommy Lee is headed west, past Abilene, and towards Midland and beyond.

Emily Ann, Amy Jo's 22 yr-old sister and guardian, who is convinced Tommy Lee is responsible for the murder of her late mother—his former girlfriend, "acquires" a car, and gives chase.

THE STORY: EMILY'S DESPERATE SEARCH

Emily's desperate search route to Midland, Texas

ABOUT EMILY:

Born and raised in North Central, Texas and parts of West Texas, Emily Ann Rideout, 22, reeled from the self-inflicted death of her alcoholic father, Webster, and not long thereafter, the murder of her late mother, Lee Ann, who, following Emily's father's death, gave birth to a her sister, Amy Jo (now 16): "father unknown."

Before her death, Lee Ann looked for love in all the wrong places, with all the wrong 'snakes,' especially one Tommy Lee Raymond—a smooth-talking mother-moocher with a line of bullshit longer than a trip to Mars.

Lee Ann Rideout's body was found one night, laid across Burlington-Northern railroad tracks, with a needle stuck in her right arm. Lee Ann was right-handed, and there were no old needle marks anywhere on her person. Most telling, was the ligature marks around her keck. The Coroner ruled it a homicide. Lee Ann's murder was never solved. Emily blamed Tommy Lee, and said as much, and often.

With her parents dead, and left to care for her sister, Emily Ann was forced to quit school, delay her dream of becoming a lawyer, and take odd jobs. Her introverted nature and mistrust of most humans never made her socially popular. She didn't give a damn about that. She did her work and kept to herself.

Emily was toughened by the experience; she learned to battle lecherous predators and nere-do-well scoundrels, with little help from anyone. Having rebuffed Tommy Lee's advances, Emily seethed, and warned him, when he turned his sights on Amy Jo.

"But She Has Cancer!": Sr. V.P. Film Development

"I absolutely love it, but..."

After the Senior Vice President of Development, at a celebrated, award-winning production company with a Disney deal, read my screenplay,

'A Quest for Angels', she practically gushed:

"I absolutely love it,” she said. “What's left to say?"

I listened, and waited.

"There's just one thing," she went on. I waited. "I honestly don't think a studio would back a film, even this one—with its amazing young girl in the lead, and her cute dog companion, because -- because she has cancer."

I was hoping not to hear this, but there it was. "Okay,” I said, “but she's spirited, precocious, not hospital-bound; she inspires other kids and her parents, and...it’s E.T. with four legs and a bark. Also…”

I stopped, recognizing the futility of trying to convince this Sr. VP, that having leads with physical challenges is not exactly new—even aids, and cancer. I pointed out films include “Love Story,” The Bucket List,” “Step Mom,” “Dying Young,” and others.

“Those are the exceptions It’s a hard slog, especially these days,” she added.

I am, however, determined that this film gets made—even if I have to involve the Sultan of Brunei, the Tooth Fairy, or whomever.

The main character, Emma Lynn Stewart, battles A.L.L, —acute lymphoblastic Leukemia. With a boundless spirit, she encourages her career-obsessed, but doting parents, that she will be all right The film turns on her spiritual bond with her beloved but mysterious Jack Russell Terrier, whom she receives as a birthday gift from a pet store that never existed.

Log line:

A spirited, precocious, 7 year-old girl with health challenges, adopted into affluence, receives a mysterious Jack Russell terrier, from a pet store that never existed, then vanishes without a trace.

A Quest for Angels' is on 'The Black List,' — a highly-respected web site, “Where filmmakers find great material to make, and great material finds filmmakers to make it.”

It is said, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.” The word 'no' is only a beginning, and much better than "Go to hell, I never want to hear from you again." Oprah-Harpo's False Copyright Infringement Claim Against Me is a Shocker! - Update.

Update - DAY 7. Despite Harpo acknowledging that nothing I have stated is untrue, they continue to use heavy-handed bullying tactics as a result of a factual statement. Etsy, the craft marketing site, has bent to their will and removed a poster reproduction of my book cover, "I Never Played Catch With My Father," which was the reason for Oprah's inviting me to her show in 1997. 1997!!

They object to my mentioning this simple fact: Play With Your Kids Art Poster – Ultra-Quality from cover of novel by former Oprah guest, and Pulitzer-Nominated author, Gene Cartwright. (The novel is the one I was invited on the show to discuss.) The original post follows.

DAVID Vs GOLIATH

What follows is likely an example of an over-zealous, "Goliath Vs David," heavy-handed action by subordinates determined to, and rightly so, protect the Oprah brand. Still, there is absolutely no excuse for false copyright infringement assertions that can cause one's reputation to suffer, and exact very real losses.

But let me state that I have great respect and admiration for Oprah. What follows is likely an example of an over-zealous, "Goliath Vs David," heavy-handed action by subordinates determined to, and rightly so, protect the Oprah brand. Still, there is absolutely no excuse for false copyright infringement assertions that can cause one's reputation to suffer, and exact very real losses.

The message in my in-box was a stunner.

Here's background information I have never spoken of or written about in all these years.

Following, I will state the immediate issue.

"...one particular guest wrongly aimed venomous comments at Oprah..."

In 1997, I received a phone call from my publicist, Nancy Eddy, (an amazing publicist) in Novato, California. "I just spoke with Oprah's Executive Producer, Diane Hudson and she want's to know if you will accept their invitation to be guest on Oprah. The show's topic is "Who's Black Enough?"

I thought about it for 1.5 nano-seconds and said "yes", with the same forced and intentional calm and reserve in which Nancy had informed me of the invitation. Invitation accepted.

Travel instructions and tickets on American Airlines for the very next week were sent; night arrival at O'Hare; pickup by a chauffeur; airport departure delayed by V.P. Al Gore's late night motorcade, and a lovely stay at the Omni Hotel — the works. The next morning saw a limo ride to Harpo Studios.

Five Major Publishers Auction...$1,000,000+ advance anticipated for my first novel...

It is no stretch to say, that being invited to appear on Oprah is/was an author's dream. Following the surprising national controversy my novel had caused, and in light of the fact a former agent, Brenda Feigen, had blown a 'Book Auction' for 'Catch' and an anticipated $1,000,000+ advance, involving five of New York's largest publishers, this was sweeeet! For a first novel, or any subsequent novel, this is virtually unheard of, then or now.

To digress a bit, during a visit to Ms. Feigen's Brentwood home, the Sunday before the auction, even as she discussed plans for her 15% domestic, 20% Foreign fee, I made clear, I would be happy to take a smaller advance, if there was a firm commitment to a substantial promotion budget.

I Never Played Catch With My Father is about a Texas-born, baby-boomer billionaire and Wall Street icon, whose love of baseball shapes his adult life. His views on matters of race and poverty differ from those of most of the so-called conservatives in his small, North-Central Texas town —even members of his church. He struggles with the fact their professions of being Christian run counter to their failure to practice what they preach and teach.

Billionaire James Phalen's advice is sought by Presidents. He speaks and "The Street" listens. However, he learns that wealth, fame, and power are not enough. He cannot purchase, at any price, memories of a heart and soul connection with his now terminally-ill father —memories that never were. Residing in New York, he has one last chance to "catch the last train home."

More details are available on my website, GeneCartwright.com. News of the failed auction, delivered by my agent (immediately former) was offered without explanation, despite my questions. The agent, in a further insult, actually billed me for the cost of mailing the manuscript. My "faith" was tested as seldom before, and I wisely elected not to make a drive to Brentwood.

..."All I can say, ethically is, the problem was your agent," he said.

The next day, I called and spoke to Simon & Schuster's then Sr.VP, Bob MeCoy, who briefly informed me that the problem for S&S, Alfred Knopf, two Random House Divisions, and St. Martin's Press was "your agent."

Vowing to go on, I later published the novel and enjoyed a three-year, coast-to-coast tour in Barnes & Noble stores, other major booksellers, and appearances on numerous talk shows, including Oprah, PBS, and many, many more. I have penned nine more published books, and a half dozen spec feature screenplays, and several shorts.

Back to Harpo and The Oprah Show.

And then comes an invite from Oprah. The trip was made, the stay at the Omni Hotel, the ride to Harpo Studios, and the first meeting with Oprah, along with other guests, including Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, Chuck D, 'Sistah Soulja,' and Bell Hooks, in the 'Green Room.'

To say that the show, titled: "Who's Black Enough?" was heated, and even included audience members who wrongly and regrettably attacked blacks considered not to be sufficiently "black," including Oprah, would be an understatement. Nationally, I had been attacked by some African American bookbuyers who took issue with the fact my novel's main character was a blue-eyed, blond-haired, Anglo-Saxon Protestant, and not black. Read a lengthy article published in The Miami Herald by Leonard Pitts, and an article in Ebony Magazine (See Google), where I was featured as "Author of The Month."

I and my guest seat-mate, Bell Hooks (nom de plume for noted author, teacher, feminist, Gloria Watkins) while taking strong issue with one particular guest who aimed venom-coated comments at Oprah, felt the woman should not be shouted down but permitted to state her case. There would be plenty of facts with which to shred her comments. Others wanted her silenced.

When my novel was discussed and the book cover filled the screen behind the stage, I made the following comment: "I don't have to prove my pedigree. When was the meeting held, where it was decided, that I and other Blacks must think and act the same? I didn't get the memo. Why must I, as a Black author be limited to only having Black main characters? The same is not true of white authors." Oprah applauded the comment.

Regarding this Oprah episode, it was scheduled; the listing appeared in TV Guide, and on the web, and the waiting began. Naturally, I and everyone I knew were awaiting the airing. VCRs (dated technology now, right?) were poised and ready.

After The Taping:

After the show's taping, Oprah entered the Green Room" and met briefly with all her guests. I introduced myself: "I'm Gene Cartwright," Oprah responded, "Oh, so you're Gene Cartwright." Clearly the news of the controversy surrounding my book was well known to Oprah. I asked her if she could accept a gift. She said "Yes." I then presented her with a T-shirt emblazoned with the cover of I Never Played Catch WIth My Father. I told her it was a medium. She remarked: "God Bless you," and we all shared a laugh.

Then came the call.

Executive Producer Diane Hudson (at the time) called to say the episode had been pulled, and no new air date had been established. I later concluded that there would be no new air date. The taped show, which ran long, was a "scorcher," and not likely well-received by The King Brothers Syndicate, which then owned the majority of The Oprah Show.

While the show never aired in full context, and never on Oprah, Oprah nevertheless appeared weeks later on then Bryant Gumbel's CBS Saturday Magazine show, "Public Eye with Bryant Gumbel" Episode 9, during the 1997–1998 television season. He interviewed Oprah, excerpts of the canceled show were aired, and Oprah discussed the show. I doubt few will remember this without going to the archives.

Nevertheless, this whole Oprah Show experience will always be a highlight of my life.

THE ISSUE AND THE CLAIM BY HARPO

"According to the notice, certain material on Etsy "is a product never offered by Trademark owner." So states the Harpo Claim.

Fact: Oprah nor Harpo owns the rights to my product. Period! Full Stop!

I have or had a poster. "Play." posted on Etsy, the craft sales site — a poster based upon the cover of my first novel, "I Never Played Catch With My Father." I and I alone am the creator and copyright owner of this material. In my brief Etsy bio, I mentioned that I was "a former Oprah guest."

This is a fact that cannot be factually disputed. Nothing related to Oprah appears on the poster; neither is it suggested that she endorses or is in any way attached to the poster. If she would like to be, we can certainly talk.

Details:

Today, I received a stunning email from Etsy's Legal Department, informing me that my product, for which I paid to have posted and was accepted, had been removed pursuant to a claim of copyright infringement from Oprah's Harpo Brand Protection division. —What? The image on my book-cover is my complete creation (created in 1992) and bears no reference to anyone except me.

In light of the fact, the infringement claim by Harpo's Kristen Becht, apparently refers to the fact that I said I was "a former Oprah guest," I am at a loss. This is a fact. So, is mentioning Oprah's name an infringement? Certainly not. If it were then millions of individuals, media, FaceBookers, Tweeters, and others are in violation. The claim is bogus and shameful.

THE EMAIL THREAD.

I have included the actual email thread, and my response, which follows. The only redaction is the name of my attorney, whom I copied. My only request, as stated in my response, Is that Harpo withdraw their false claim in writing, to Etsy, and to me personally. Failing doing that, I will have to seek further redress.

My Response to Harpo, with CC to Etsy, and my attorney (Not listed here)

False claims of copyright infringement are of great weight and import, especially when rendered cavalierly, and by an entity such as Harpo. The DCMA provides remedies for such bogus claims.

Please note that your contacting of Etsy, regarding my statement of fact, which you falsely assert or infer is a copyright infringement, is not only an infringement of my First Amendment rights but may constitute slander and or defamation, and damage to my reputation, as it - as stated above - falsely asserts a violation of copyright infringement.

Further, by so doing, you may well have violated the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

The item posted in Etsy bears no character or image other than that for which I am the sole creator and rightful copyright owner.

I will continue, as I have and will do in numerous forums, state the same fact that I was a guest on Oprah (a statement of fact). I invite you and Harpo to deny this fact in writing to Etsy or anyone else, and provide me a copy.

I invite Etsy, as a means of not being a party to this defamation, to require this of you. Documentation of the fact I have stated, is available, and would be clear to any trier of fact.

If you have faith in your assertion of a copyright infringement, I invite you to pursue legal action against me. Otherwise, unless remedied by you, I will pursue justifiable claims of damages resulting from your false claim, which adversely affects my personal reputation, and standing, and causes understandable distress.

I request you correct this matter with Etsy, a company you have now involved by having them take unilateral action without investigation. It is the least you can do.

Presently, and for a limited time, I herewith legally demand a tangible and unequivocal correction of this matter, and a written apology.

UPDATE:

As of Thursday, April 3, 2014, I received a response that failed to address the issues I have raised in my initial response, and suggested that if I want them to withdraw their claim, I should not mention the fact that I was a guest on Oprah.

So, it appears that "Oprah", unlike the name of GOD, is the name shall not be mentioned, under any circumstance, except by special dispensation. To do so appears to be "blasphemy or heresy or both. So be it. I will continue to state the undeniable fact, as is my First Amendment Right. And will seek any and all remedies to seek redress.

Why NPR Avoided My Fictional Story involving Al-Qaeda: Was it all too real—too politically sensitive?

In May of 2012, I submitted an entry to NPR’s (National Public Radio) 3-Minute fiction contest. In the contest, writers have to tell a complete story in 600 words or less, based on suggested subject matter.

While I cannot be completely certain, recent Al-Qaeda alerts, and concerns about Osama Bin Laden’s number two, and now number one, Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri gives me a clue as to why NPR likely wanted nothing to do with my story. Was the very first sentence too sensitive and explosive? I continue to ask them but, more than a year later, have yet to receive a response. Read the story and decide for yourself.

He was dead. Bin Laden’s successor, Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri was dead. President John Gregg, 41, married in a glitzy White House ceremony on Inaugural Night, addressed the nation hours before polls would open in his re-election bid. Considering his sterling national security credentials, this was the coup de grâce for his opponent.

Sporting a dark-blue suit, open collar, dark strands falling over his face, Gregg earlier emerged from eight hours in the situation room with his national security team. He spoke from the East Room where President Obama announced the Seal Team 6 killing of Bin Laden.

While Zawahiri was not universally familiar to Americans, his oft-repeated labeling as Bin Laden’s successor, and his recently thwarted terrorist plans in the U.S. resonated. He was killed resisting capture by U.S. forces, 75 kilometers from Peshawar, situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass.

The President turned left, off the East Room’s red carpet runner, and face to face with firebrand Chief of Staff, Brad Meltzer.

“We have to get to Walter Reed Medical now, Mr. President. First Lady is in full-blown labor. If we hurry, we’ll get there in time. Marine One is waiting. Klayford can handle the press. Hell, they’re probably already there.”

Earlier updates from Meltzer were reassuring. Within ten minutes, the President, Meltzer, and the Secret Service detail were airborne. In a diversion, several black SUV’s departed the White House gate, en route to nowhere.

Marine One landed. The President alighted, rotors still whirling, and bolted for the roof door. Meltzer and agents scurried to keep up. On the secured floor, all were met by the Administrator, and the Chief Nurse. Handshakes were followed by an update from the nurse. The First Lady’s labor was described as “atypically brief.” Mother and child were stable. That word brought a response from the President.

“Stable?”

“Medical-ese, sir. Both are fine. The baby…the baby is undergoing routine tests.”

The entourage reached the First Lady’s suite, already cleared by agents. The nurse donned a mask, and handed one to the President. The others were directed nearby to wait.

Upon entering, The First Lady appeared asleep. The nurse directed the President to the lavatory where he washed and returned. He approached his wife’s bed, barely containing his joy. She flashed a faint smile then closed her eyes. Gregg saw tears wind down her cheeks. He removed the mask, leaned down, softly kissed her lips, her brow, and gently brushed away her tears.

“I’m…I’m so sorry,” Pamela whispered.

“Sorry? I’m sorry I wasn’t here earlier. Forgive me, sweetheart.”

The door opened. A smock-clad nurse entered, cradling the infant. The head nurse motioned the President to a bedside chair. The second nurse introduced him to the First Son, Kyle. Gregg’s chest swelled. His eyes teared. The nurse gently placed baby Kyle in his arms.

The First Father gazed at the miracle he held, and saw his beautiful son. As the nurses quietly exited, Gregg quietly observed the upward and outward slant of his son’s eyes; a fold of skin on the inner side; the narrow and short slits; the face’s flat appearance, and he knew. Despite negative pre-natal Downs Syndrome tests, the characteristics were clear.

Then a smile. The President saw his son flash the most beautiful smile he had ever seen. Overcome, Gregg planted a long kiss on his son’s brow then turned to his wife—his voice filled with emotion.

“He is so beautiful. He is truly our blessing. Don’t be sorry—ever. Be happy. Happy. You now have two men who love you unconditionally. I love you. We love you.”

In 1994, with no experience, the help of my best friend, and armed only with an idea and boundless determination, I set about to write, cast, produce, and direct a sitcom. In many ways, I benefitted from having no idea of how difficult this was supposed to be; and so it never seemed impossible. I’m told we were ahead of our time. This was long before any such programs on TV or in films.

I'm reviving the project, and launching our first feature film project, "Shadows In The Mist." A number of opportunities will be available in producing this independent film. The screenplay is complete, and will soon be available for viewing by interested parties.

Brief synopsis:

The Lemon Tree was once a real salon, located on Myrtle Avenue, Monrovia California. Black, white and Hispanic operators, who call themselves ‘The Crew’, staff our fictional LEMON TREE, with its eclectic clientele. It is much more than a beauty salon—more like a shrink’s office with a Salon. It’s a social club, an information exchange (house of gossip) Nothing is off-limits; no subject and no one is sacred. Its patrons are young and old, and mostly female. They reflect the tenor and pulse of the neighborhood and society in every way. If it happens in real life, it happens at The Lemon Tree.

Eighteen years ago, I was fortunate to have the indispensable assistance of my late, best friend, Lance Brown. We finalized a script for three episodes, created the so-called “bible,” ran Hollywood trade paper ads, cast, auditioned, rehearsed, and shot the first episode in one 19 hour shooting day. One cast member, Kate McIntyre, was a principal cast member who remains a friend to this day. Her friendship is one of the greatest results of this venture.

Having no money, it wasn’t hard figuring out what to pay some truly great actors and wonderful people: nothing. We made clear was that, if the project was successful, they would reap the rewards. What we did provide was some great home-cooked food, catered by Lance’s wife, Patricia.

Oh, we also had no equipment, at least not the professional kind. I had a clunky, home-style, semi-pro Panasonic AG-400P Super-VHS camcorder (which I have in my old tech collection). Lighting was purchased from “Home Depot,” and we created reflectors using large picture frames covered in lamé fabric.

Our location: the beauty salon, “The Lemon Tree” was owned by a wonderful friend, Clara Banks. When I told of her of my idea, she excitedly said yes, “use the place like you wish.”

All the heavily mirrored stations were kept in place, and were used to provide reflective angles while not reflecting our very “professional” lighting. Still, we had challenges. A principal cast member had an afternoon flight home to Ohio that could not be missed. Her part was filmed out of sequence. We got it all done

Although, the final production could have been more slick and polished, the impossible was made possible. Take a look and see for yourself. The project is now 18 years old. Wow.

Unfortunately, no one in Hollywood gave us a minute of “pitch” time, and no agent gave us the time of day. We did approach Fox Television on our own, but never heard back. That’s Hollywood. However, this experience remains foundational in our determination to bring our first feature film, “Shadows in The Mist” to fruition. And we will. Giving up is never an option.

What Does The American Flag Mean to Me?

What Does The American Flag Mean to Me?

Few questions are more thought-provoking. For many, the flag is a symbol of freedom valiantly earned; for hope eternally lifted to the world; and inspiration that endures. When I see the American flag, I see more than “Old Glory Red,” “Old Glory Blue,” and brilliant white. I see more than precisely sized and spaced stars and stripes—the whole of it waving proudly. No, for me, that is an idealized view that is but a symbol of another American flag even more majestic, and awe-inspiring.

The American flag I see, does not beg for idolatrous worship but demands devotion to seeking to make real its promise. It boasts the same number of stars; the same number of stripes, and embodies the same symbolism as the first yet more. Her colors are faded; the blue not so blue anymore; the red not so brilliant, and the white is stained and soiled.

The American flag I see is stained with the blood of heroes long gone. It is soiled by the countless hands of those who, despite their circumstances lifted her to keep her waving high. It is the flag saluted by those who did not yet enjoy all the freedoms she promised, yet still raised right hand to heart or brow.

The American flag I see is the one raised on Iwo Jima; the one that draped the coffin of an assassinated President saluted by his young son, and the one at the front of the funeral procession of an assassinated “Dreamer.” I see this flag in the flags presented to the bereaved families of those who have given all for their country. That is the flag I see.

Yes, the American flag I see is tattered, soiled yet ever waving, never to be ceremoniously torched and replaced by one not threadbare. It is the enduring American flag that inspires even the infirmed to rise when the Star Spangled Banner plays, and the flag unfurls. It is the flag I have seen saluted by the weak and unsteady hands of those who, likely only see it as a blur now.

The American flag I see, honor, and salute is the one that does not lend itself to piety and empty, self-serving rhetoric. It cannot be reduced to a lapel pin, freshly made in some far away factory in a place devoid of the freedoms it represents. The flag I see cannot be ripped down, dragged in the dirt by enemies, or burned in protest. It is the flag that truly belongs to us all, and it forever waves, even when the air is still.

As an American,

and as a proud, inactive Marine (never former), that is the flag I see. That is what the flag means to me, and I am certain I am not alone. So, when next you gaze upon the American flag, look deeply—look deeply. I invite you to see the flag I see.

Overcoming Self-doubt

From “STILL DREAMING”

There are times, in all our lives, when the optimist within us fails to lift and empower. We become calendar-driven; subjected to the doubts of others, as if our own were not enough. We ask ourselves: “Am I there yet? Am I at least near the outskirts of my ‘Promise Land’?”

What Promise Land? Who promised you what, and when? Did you get that in writing? Was the promise notarized? Where was it written, that on a date, certain you would realize all your dreams, reach your loftiest goals, and bask in the glow of your deserved success? Does the fact you find yourself still striving, leave you less than inspired? Welcome to life.

Self-doubt and uncertainty are not unusual, and are to be expected. However, when our time in the “valley” of our existence becomes an extended stay, we owe it to ourselves to reach even deeper in order to again experience “wind beneath our wings,”—to ascend to the heights to which we all aspire.

Okay, I hear you saying: “That’s often easier said than done.” Agreed. Still, we must at least strive to break free, and to live our best lives, as best we can. If we are fortunate and blessed, at our weakest, there is that ‘someone’ in our life who—simply by the force of their being, and their love for us—will encourage us. There is that “one” who nudge us, put a loving foot in our rear ends, if necessary, and insist we focus on the possibilities that are before us. It only takes that “one.”

Failing even that “one,” stand in front of your mirror and challenge yourself. Summon even the faintest images of your dreams, embrace them, and never let go. Dreams are the DNA of all reality.

Courage Required: My "Million Dollar Book Auction"

Some time ago, I wrote a blog titled: "Who Is In Your Mirror?"

Today, I want to reprint it here. But first, I want to make the following observations.

For many authors, especially first-time authors, the hope—the dream is that their first novel or book will set the world on fire; trike the motherlode; shoot the moon—all the analogies one can make regarding ultimate success. It just does not happen that way. To quote an oft-spoke phrase: "Overnight success often takes a long time."

I was very fortunate. In 1995, my first novel, "I Never Played Catch With My Father," had five of New York's top publishers set to bid on publishing rights: Simon & Schuster, two divisions of Random House, Alfred Knopf, and St. Martin's Press. I recall meeting with my agent (then, and who I will not here name), in her Brentwood, California home, on the Sunday preceding the Monday auction.

Ms. B.F., my agent, was excited and very upbeat about the upcoming momentous event. "This almost never happens," she said, as she proceeded to talk about her plans to remodel her home with part of her 15%. I had no immediate plans, except to have lunch after our meeting. She projected a top figure of 1 to 1.2 million dollars for a two-book deal. Of course, that seemed a lot of money to this humble Texas native from a family of eight siblings, I made the point I was just as concerned about the eventual publisher's commitment to promotion dollars.

While, I have amore lengthy piece about this, I will abbreviate it here.

B.F. advised me that if I did not hear from he before 6 p.m. Pacific time, all had gone well, andthe only question would be the final numbers. 6 p.m. came and went. For the first time, I permitted myself to at least think of buying a new computer, and perhaps a new guitar and a new Fender amp I had been craving.

Then, the call from B.F. From her hello, I knew the Fender would have to wait. "The auction fell through," she intoned in an unfamiliar baritone. I waited—I waited for a detailed explanation. There was silence. "What happened," I asked, in a measured tone. There was silence, followed by: "I'm not really sure." Realizing further questions were futile, I ended the conversation.

The next day, I called New York, and spoke to—after polite insistence—to Simon & Schuster's then Sr. Vice President, Bob Mecoy. He was reluctant to speak directly to me but relented. He said the following:

"Mr. Cartwright, I really should not be speaking to you; you have an agent. But I think you at least deserve to know that the problem was...was your agent."

It was then I finally felt the disappointment, anger, and rage I had constrained. Mr. Mecoy would not say more. The conversation ended. I called B.F. and demanded to know the truth. I suspected she had made unreasonable and greedy demands, and perhaps turned down substantial numbers just short of her expected 1 to 1.2 million dollars. I did not tell her of my conversation with S&S. She was vague, unapologetic, and terse. I fired her on the spot. She then, adding gasoline to fire, demanded I reimburse her for printing and mailing costs. I hung up.

I gave myself 48 hours to be pissed off and homicidal. I took a long drive to San Francisco, then later returned to writing, querying, and seeking new representation. To be honest, there was almost another 'Murder in Brentwood.'

What Next? I am fortunate to be one who looks at what is, what can be, and determine what I can and must do to effect the desired outcome. I try to not let some selff-imposed timetables get in the way, and do not engage in self-flagellation. Nothing is guaranteed except failure, if one does nothing.

And as always, in addition to crediting my Creator, I credit the fact I was born at the right address, to my late, sainted mother and father. Of course, the synergy of one's environment, or perhaps in spite of that environment, plus the random association of cells and chromosomes that help determine our start at birth, all play a significant part.

I have continued to write, and have enjoyed writing success; maintained a firm view of my purpose—after realizing I would not die as the engineer I once was. I am not terminally discouraged by setbacks, whether caused by me, others, or unforeseen circumstances. I would write even if there were no readers. I am driven to create; to invent; to think, and to live. If you dig down deeply, these attributes are likely within you.

We are a short time here, and a long time gone.

Courage required: So, if you set about to write a book, failed to achieve great success, then quit, with no plans or thought of continuing to write, then you are likely not a writer. Continue to seek your purpose. If you have stopped promoting your one book, despite the fact a book is forever; and have books stored in the corner of your garage, then you need to look in that mirror I speak about. Ask yourself some hard questions, and honestly answer them.

When was your last conversation with your mirror?

In almost any pursuit,

we proceed with a set of expectations. Often, those expectations are realistic, even more often, they are not. Yet, this is understandable and not meant to be critical. Key questions we authors must gaze into our mirror and ask ourselves are:

Why am I writing?
Is my decision to write tantamount to purchasing a lottery ticket, and crossing fingers?
Is my goal one of simply writing a single blockbuster and retiring to my private island?
Do I take seriously the notion that being an author is not a get-rich-quick scheme?
Is my first book my only writing goal?

Of course, there are many other important questions I have left out, but let's look at my brief list, and recognize one basic thing: writing requires unadulterated dedication, persistence, and very thick skin.

If one is easily discouraged, writing is not the profession to pursue. Writing a book is only the beginning. You already know this to be true. Unabashed marketing and promotion is essential.

It is also essential that authors network, network, network, not only with fellow-authors, but with media, and industry-types at all levels.

Question: When was the last time you reached out to offer your thoughts, ask questions, seek advice, emulate another's success, offer congratulations or a constructive critique? It is unfair to expect to receive benefit but not to reach out to offer same.

We all need encouragement, and therefore offering sincere encouragement is the currency that enriches us all.

So, I encourage you to become a serial giver, a consistent congratulator, an avid advisor, and a master motivator. I work at these things everyday, as do many of you. I congratulate you, if you may be so described. If you cannot be, I encourage you to make the effort, for your own benefit and success.

These are difficult times for so many. If writing is your passion, abandoning it is not an option. Remember, a book is forever; it will always exist. Unless you only create calendars, your writing is never truly out-of-date. If you have written your first or fiftieth book, your next book should have already been underway. If a law is made making writing a capital offense, real writers will be found in prison—writing, all the way to the gallows. You get the point.

Keep writing, keep creating, keep living!

From Letter To My Old Master

In August of 1865, a Colonel P.H. Anderson of Big Spring, Tennessee, wrote to his former slave, Jourdan Anderson, and requested that he come back to work on his farm. Jourdan — who, since being emancipated, had moved to Ohio, found paid work, and was now supporting his family — responded spectacularly by way of the letter seen below (a letter which, according to newspapers at the time, he dictated).

Rather than quote the numerous highlights in this letter, I'll simply leave you to enjoy it. Do make sure you read to the end.

How to Improve Your Eye Health

Ocular nutrition and eye health is an important part of helping maintain our vision and eye health as we age. One can safely say that every part of the human eye needs ocular nutrition support and nutrition to improve eye health.

Healthy vision and the human eye is related to the health of the individual parts of the eye — the cornea, iris, macula, lens, optic nerve, pupil, retina and the vitreous humor. And ocular nutrition is one of the ways good vision can be supported.

As we age, many things can go wrong with our vision. Ultraviolet light from the sun can damage the lens and the cornea. Wind, dust, chlorine fumes, automobile fumes, freezing temperatures and physical injury are examples of threats to good vision.

Vibration from driving and hitting potholes has a cumulative negative impact on eye health as well as long hours spent in front of a computer screen. And certainly we need foods that help to promote healthy eyes.

Here is ocular nutrition information for nourishing the eyes:

Based on information provided by the U.S. National Eye Institute, results of nutrition and eye health food studies have shown that consuming certain foods provides ocular nutrition. In other words, using food to improve eyesight and nutrition to improve eye health has been proven by studies. Here is a list of food to improve eyesight:

Ocular nutrition with collard greens, kale and spinach.
Studies show that eating foods rich in

carotenoids

is associated with reduced risk of developing age-related macular degeneration. Foods rich in carotenoids are leafy green vegetables such as spinach, collard greens and kale. Macular eye nutrition becomes increasingly important as we age.

Ocular nutrition with green vegetables and corn.
Another study on ocular nutrition has shown a reduced likehood of developing cataracts for persons with diets higher in

lutein

and

zeaxanthin.

Foods high in these two carotenoids are broccoli, collard greens, corn, green peas, kale, romaine lettuce, spinach, turnip greens and zucchini. Lutein is also found in egg yolks.

Persons with diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin were also less likely to need cataract surgery. In another study, persons ages 40-59 with macular eye nutrition diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin may experience reduced risk of developing adult macular degeneration.

Ocular nutrition with blueberries, apricots and bilberries.
Besides the studies reported by the National Eye Institute above, other studies exist on ocular nutrition and foods that improve eye sight.

Eating blueberries has been associated with the reduction of eye fatigue. Blueberries are related to cranberries, and both also help the body resist urinary tract infections.

Apricots are rich in nutrients such as

beta carotene

and

lycopene

that help promote good vision. Beta carotene is converted as needed by the body to vitamin A, an important antioxidant that resists oxidative stress damage to cells and tissues, including the eye lenses. Continued oxidative stress may result in the development of cataracts or damage the blood supply to the eyes and lead to macular degeneration.

Bilberries grow on small bushes and were used by British pilots to improve their night vision and eye health night vision. Fresh bilberries and bilberry jams would be sources of this ocular nutrition food. Bilberry seems to improve eye health by increasing the blood supply to the eyes (smoking, for example, decreases the blood supply to the eyes). The substance in bilberry that nourishes eye tissue is called

anthocyanosides.

Ocular nutrition with cold water fish and Omega 3 fish oil.
Cold-water fish such as salmon, tuna, cod, haddock as well as sardines are rich in the healthy

Omega 3

oils. For example, Eskimos have almost no incidence of open-angle glaucoma with their diet rich in Omega 3 cold-water fish which maybe is the best foods for optic nerve. Omega 3 is also associated with numerous other health benefits relating to improving heart health, arthritis symptoms relief and lowering chosterol. It is certainly one of the best foods for clear eyesight and eye health.

Here’s additional important ocular nutrition and vision information:

Besides the nutrients and ocular nutrition foods described above, the following nutrients are associated with vision and eye health.

Alpha Lipoic Acid – ALA improves the performance of other antioxidants in the body
L-Taurine – helps protect the eyes from UV light and helps strengthen the retinal cells
Lycopene – a strong antioxidant found in tomatoes
N-Acetyl Cysteine – helps protect the eyes from damage by UV light and strengthens the immune system
Quercetin – a strong antioxidant that helps maintain lens transparency; exists in small amounts in red wine
Vitamin C – helps the body resist damage by oxidation (damage from long-term exposure to oxygen and light)
Zinc – helps support macula and retina health; levels of zinc and eye health are definitely related

How can you obtain these ocular nutrition nutrients every day?

Great question! You have several options:

1 – Try to include the ocular nutrition foods in the daily meal planning. Consuming more whole foods and healing and eye health should be a goal of everyone. While using nutrition to improve eye health is a good idea, very large quantities of the eye-healthy foods are needed to provide meaningful nutrient levels.

2 – Take the various nutrients individually in supplement form.

3 – Take a vision and eye health specific nutritional supplement. There are ocular health vitamins and ocular health nonprescription supplements that help maintain or even improve eyesight. This can be a practical and cost-effective solution.

4 – Take a daily multiple vitamin/mineral supplement that includes the vitamins for ocular health providing the eye-healthy nutrients in meaningful quantities. This option can be the best way, assuming one can locate such a product. Most daily supplements either do not include all of the eye-healthy nutrients, or the quantities are so low as to be of little benefit.

We should never take eye health and good vision for granted. The fact that you were searching for the term "ocular nutrition" means you are already aware that nutrition and supplementation can help maintain or even improve your eye health.

Failing vision does not have to be a part of getting older - give your eyes the critical ocular nutrition and nutrients in meaningful quanties every day. This likely means including ocular health vitamins in your daily supplementation. Your future eye health may depend on it!

to suit rich, tan bodies that rise at dawn,

to plant bare feet in shimmering white sand.

Another day in Paradise.

A boundless view of crystal blue waters.

Sleek, shiny, snow-white yachts anchored nearby,

vessels boasting captains and crews in smart attire.

Servants poised to answer every desire and whim.

French Bordeaux, world cuisine, meals for kings.

A bright, golden sun rules in an azure sky,

above this pleasure paradise—this Garden of Eden;

a Shangri-la worlds away from paupers and beggars,

natural calamities, war and such earthly hell.

'White Christmas' Like You've Never Heard!

White Christmas?

Okay, I know the Christmas Holiday season is over but I could not resist sharing this with everyone. While sending eCards to family and friends (using PixApple, of course) I used a version of 'White Christmas' I had recently added to the 'music choices' on PixApple. I confess that I had not listened to the complete file. I soon learned something.

In a response I received from one of the card recipients, the person went on and on about the well-known carol. So, I had to listen to find out what I had missed. I listened and was 'blown away' by this piano rendition of the Christmas favorite. Now, I know that purists may not take to this version but they will definitely appreciate the virtuosity.

Debit Cards Are Different

Would you give a thief direct access to your checking account?

No? Unfortunately, you may be doing just that by regularly using your debit card. Debit cards may look identical to credit cards, but there's one key difference. With credit cards, users who spot fraudulent charges on their bill can simply decline the charges and not pay the bill. On the other hand, debit cards draw money directly from your checking account, rather than from an intermediary such as a credit card company.

Because of that, even clear-cut cases of fraud where victims are protected from liability by consumer protection laws can cause significant hardship, says Frank Abagnale, a secure-document consultant in Washington, D.C.

He cites the example of the The TJX Companies Inc.'s T.J. Maxx data breach that exposed the payment information of thousands of customers in 2007. The incident resulted in $150 million in fraud losses, and much of it was pulled directly from customers' bank accounts. While credit card users got their accounts straightened out and new cards in the mail within a few days, the case created major problems for debit card holders who waited an average of two to three months to get reimbursed, Abagnale says.

While debit card fraud is always a possibility, being careful where you use it can help keep your checking account balance out of the hands of criminals.

The idea that outdoor ATMs are among the most dangerous places to use a debit card seems a little bit absurd. But some ATMs present a perfect opportunity for thieves to skim users' debit cards, says Chris McGoey, a security consultant based in Los Angeles.

Skimming is the practice of capturing a bank customer's card information by running it through a machine that reads the card's magnetic strip. Those machines are often placed over the real card slots at ATMs and other card terminals.

"Any transaction you do outdoors at an open ATM is going to be higher risk exposure," McGoey says. "If the public has access to it, then someone has the ability to add skimming devices to it, position cameras on it and position themselves in a way where they could surveil it."

He says you're better off using an ATM inside a retail outlet or other high-trafficked, well-lit place.

Julie McNelley, senior analyst for Aite Group LLC, a Boston-based financial services research firm, says even the card terminals that card users must swipe to get into ATM vestibules are being used as a skimming site by criminals. You can spot ATM skimmers by checking for ATM components that look beat-up or askew, she says.

Stealing PINs at Gas Stations

Gas stations are another danger zone for debit card use.

"You go to a gas station and you stick your debit card in there, and you swipe it through a machine," Abagnale says. "I'm sitting across the street with a laptop and an antenna. I put a skimmer in there, and I'm picking up all the information. Before you even get home, I've debited your account."

Gas station payment terminals have many of the characteristics card fraudsters love, McNelley says.

"In a gas station where you do have a whole bunch of pay-at-the-pump kinds of things and minimal supervision, it's pretty easy for a bad guy to put a skimming device on and put a little pinpoint camera there and compromise debit cards that way," McNelley says. Thieves often use small cameras to capture footage of debit card users entering their PINs so they can have free access to their money.

She says even if the thief doesn't manage to get your debit card personal identification number, or PIN, from such a device, he still may be able to duplicate the card's magnetic strip and use it for "sign and swipe" Visa or MasterCard transactions.

With the high potential for fraud in pay-at-the-pump debit transactions, it might make sense to use an alternative such as cash or credit cards the next time you fill up.

The Web Is a Risky Place

Debit cards are a convenient way to buy products online, especially for those who don't like to use credit cards. Unfortunately, the Web is one of the most dangerous places to make purchases, McNelley says.

"Online is the No. 1 place where consumers should not use their debit cards," she says. "It's susceptible at so many points. The consumer could have malware on their computer, so it could be at their endpoint that the data get compromised. It could be a man-in-the-middle attack where somebody is eavesdropping on their communications via the wireless network. And then at the other end, that data goes into a database at the merchant. As we've seen with some of the higher-profile breach events over the last year or so, that data is going to be vulnerable if (they're) not properly cared for."

Aside from the potential for hacking at many different points in a transaction, Abagnale says a fundamental problem with using debit cards online is it's impossible to know who is handling your information.

"Buying stuff online, you have to be careful because you have to know who you're doing business with. When you buy things online, what always kills me about that is people say, 'This is a safe site,'" Abagnale says. "Who works there?"

Restaurants Keep Customer Data on File

"Would you care for a side of debit card fraud with that?"

Restaurant servers don't ask that question, but they might as well with the standard practice of taking customers' debit cards to run them behind closed doors.

"Any place where the card is out of hand" can increase the chances of fraud, says McGoey. "The guy comes to your table, takes your card and disappears for a while, so he or she has privacy," giving the person the opportunity to copy your card information.

Even restaurants without sit-down service can present a threat. McNelley says using debit cards to order delivery can be risky because cashiers tend to keep customer payment information on file. That may make future orders more convenient, but small businesses rarely take the steps necessary to safeguard payment information, she says.

Overall, she says, regardless of whether you use your debit card at a small restaurant or a big-box store, the possibility of fraud is always there. She cites the example of Michaels Stores Inc., which saw its customers' debit card information stolen in May by debit card terminals doctored by thieves.

"Even if you do exercise caution ... there are still the Michaels-type incidents that will happen," McNelley says.

Americans spend billions of dollars every year on bottled water. People choose bottled water for a variety of reasons including aesthetics (for example, taste), health concerns, or as a substitute for other beverages.

If you have questions about bottled water, make sure you are informed about where your bottled water comes from and how it has been treated. The standards for bottled water are set by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA bases its standards on the EPA standards for tap water.

Read the label on your bottled water. While there is currently no standardized label for bottled water, this label may tell you about the way the bottled water is treated.
Check the label for a toll-free number or Web page address of the company that bottled the water. This may be a source of further information.

Bottled Water & Immunocompromised Individuals

People with compromised immune systems may want to take special precautions with the water they drink. In healthy individuals, the parasite Cryptosporidium can cause illness; however, for those with weakened immune systems, it can cause severe illness and possibly death. Look for bottled water treatments that protect against Cryptosporidium, which include:

Reverse Osmosis
Distillation
Filtration with an absolute 1 micron filter

Fluoride and Bottled Water

Some bottled waters contain fluoride, and some do not. Fluoride can occur naturally in source waters used for bottling or be added. Safety and Regulation

The FDA regulates bottled water under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and sets standards for bottled water that are based on ones developed by EPA. If these standards are met, water is considered safe for most healthy individuals. The bottled water industry must also follow FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMPs) for processing and bottling drinking water.

Bottled Water Outbreaks

Although bottled water outbreaks are not often reported, they do occur. It is important for bottled water manufacturers, distributors, and consumers to:

Protect and properly treat water before bottling
Maintain good manufacturing processes
Protect bottled water during shipping and storage
Prevent contamination at the point of use (after purchase by the consumer)

The presence of contaminants in water can lead to adverse health effects, including gastrointestinal illness, reproductive problems, and neurological disorders. Infants, young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people whose immune systems are compromised because of AIDS, chemotherapy, or transplant medications, may be especially susceptible to illness from some contaminants.

When was your last conversation with your mirror?

In almost any pursuit,

Why am I writing?
Is my decision to write tantamount to purchasing a lottery ticket, and crossing fingers?
Is my goal one of simply writing a single blockbuster and retiring to my private island?
Do I take seriously the notion that being an author is not a get-rich-quick scheme?
Is my first book my only writing goal?

If one is easily discouraged, writing is not the profession to pursue. Writing a book is only the beginning. You already know this to be true. Unabashed marketing and promotion is essential.

It is also essential that authors network, network, network, not only with fellow-authors, but with media, and industry-types at all levels.

We all need encouragement, and therefore offering sincere encouragement is the currency that enriches us all.

Keep writing.
