Steel Buildings: Versatility And Quality At Their Finest

Steel and metal buildings offer a number of valuable benefits over more conventional structures and construction practices. Not only are they durable and cost efficient, but metal buildings also provide an unmatched versatility and quality that is impossible to find in using other building materials. Welding Terminology

If you are interesting in welding there are many different terms that you will want to familiarize yourself with in order to read magazines or books on the topic. Here is a list of common terms that are important to know:

ACETYLENE -- this is a gas that you will be working with to do welding. It is a very flammable gas so you have to be careful with it. This gas is made up of carbon and hydrogen and it is used in the oxyacetylene type of welding process.

AIR-ACETYLENE -- this is a flare that you can produce using low temperature. It is created when you burn acetylene with air and not oxygen.

AIR-CARBON ARC CUTTING (CAC-A) -- this is a way of arc cutting where you melt metals through the heat of a carbon arc.

ALLOY -- this is a mix that has metallic properties because it has at least one element that is metal, but it can have several other things in the mix as long as one is metal.

ALTERNATING CURRENT -- a current that goes backward and forward at regular intervals (see DC Current).

BACK FIRE -- this is the popping sound that you hear when you turn on the acetylene torch when you connect it with fire. It is created because the flame turns back into the tip for a moment and then comes back out of the torch as a flame.

BACKHAND WELDING -- this is a special welding technique where you point the flame at the weld that is already completed.

BACKING STRIP -- this is a strip of material that you will use when you need to keep metal that is melted at the bottom of the weld. You may also use this strip to add strength to the thermal load of a joint so you can stop the base of the metal from warping too much.

BASE METAL -- this is what you call the metal that you are going to weld or that you are going to cut. If this is an alloy, it will be the metal that you have in the highest amount.

BRAZING -- this is actually several welding processes. You will use this when you have a groove, fillet, lap or flange joint that you need to bond. This will require a nonferrous filler metal that has a melting point higher than 800 degrees F (427 degrees C) but less then your base metals. Then, the filler metal will be distributed throughout the joint using capillary attraction.

DIRECT CURRENT (DC) -- a current that only flows in one direction -- forward.

- Flows in one direction and does not reverse its direction of flow.
DEFECT -- there can be defects in your weld after you create it. The main defects you can find are things like cracks, porosity, places where the metal has been undercut, or where you have a slag inclusion.

EDGE JOINT -- this is where you set two plates and put them together at a 90 degree angle with their outer edges.

When choosing the ideal floor coating or floor covering for concrete floor, most would recommend epoxy floor coating. Epoxy coating has a great number of advantages and is a great option for your garage concrete floor.

Many people choose epoxy coating over other floor coverings due to the following reasons:

Epoxy coating makes the floor impact-resistant. The garage is one of the most heavily used areas of your home; heavily used being that it takes in a lot of weight, from your car to your stuffed boxes and tools and other equipment. Metal finishing alters the surface of metal products to enhance corrosion resistance, wear resistance, electrical conductivity, electrical resistance, reflectivity and appearance, torque tolerance, solder ability, Tarnish resistance, chemical resistance, and hardness. Electrolytic plating, electro less plating, and chemical & electrochemical conversion processes are typically used in the industry.

Types of metal finishing processes are electroplating, electro less plating, chemical and electrochemical conversion, cladding, and case hardening, dip/galvanized coatings, electro polishing, and vapor deposition. Chicago metal finishing chemicals serves industries like automotive, agriculture, office furniture, appliance, off-road, coil coating, lawn and garden, aerospace, outdoor furniture, lighting, industrial racking, bearings, remanufacturing, custom coaters, air distribution, recreational, military, plating, medical equipment, and processing equipment.

Metal finishing can be categorized into electroplating, metal blackening, black oxide, corrosion inhibitors, metal cleaners, metal bright dips, surface preparations, phosphate finishes, waste treatment chemicals, chromate conversion etc. A corrosion inhibitor is a chemical compound that, when added to a fluid or gas, decreases the corrosion rate of a metal or an alloy. Electro less plating is a method of depositing a transitional metal on to a metallic substrate using a process of chemical reduction. Electro less plating is used for coating nonmetallic parts. The area where electro less plating are oil & gas, plastics, textiles, automotive, aviation & aerospace, food & pharmaceutical and Chemical processing.

In aerospace it is used in rams pistons, valve components, and satellite and rocket components. In automotive it is used in shock absorbers, heat sinks, gears, cylinders, brake pistons etc. Black oxide is unlike any other finish. Black oxide is a conversion coating formed by a chemical reaction produced when parts are immersed in the alkaline aqueous salt solution operated at approximately 285 degrees F. advantages of black oxide are no dimensional changes, dark black color, reduces light glare, improved lubrication characteristics, color change resistant to temperature, no white corrosion, weld able and no hydrogen embrittlement. Bright dip can be used to finish copper, brass, and even stainless steel. Black metal is a heavy metal. It is often used in fast tempos, shrieked vocals; highly distorted guitars played with tremolo picking, double kick drumming and unconventional song structure.

There are two general types of black oxide for iron and steel are hot black oxide and room temperature blackening. Surface preparation implies that an existing surface must be prepared prior to the installation or application of a new surface. Surface preparation is a two stage process - removal and profiling. Popular removal equipment are strippers, shot blasters, grinders, scrapers scarifies and planers. This can be used in carpet, ceramic title, wood, rubber, linoleum, epoxies, non-skids, paint, stains and adhesive surface.

Failing to properly prep the piece, can and will lead to some very bad powder coating jobs which you will undeniably regret after having to to strip this strong, durable coating off of the piece. As you learn more, and find different powder coat supplies, you may change your prep sequence slightly, but for the most part, these are the main three.

First and foremost, the most important step with electrostatic powder coating is the use and application of proper de-greasing. Nothing will ruin a powder coat paint finish faster then having grime or dirt in between the layer of powder and the part that you're working on. So step 1 in the powder coating process will never change. If there are heavy deposits on the part you're working with, begin with simple water and a rag. Get as much of it off as you can, and if that looks sufficient you can move onto step 2, but if there is lots of grime built up on it, a heavy duty industrial de-greaser may be required. Many people swear by these, but I try and avoid them in my list of powder coating supplies as many will leave a film on your piece that can cause even more problems down the road, but regardless, if the piece isn't coming clean without the use of this, then by all means use it before you begin powder coating.

Step 2 is media blasting the part. This is basically like sanding the entire piece before the powder coat finish is applied. Silica sand has been used for years, and still very predominant over seas, but many people in the US are opting against it for fear of silicosis. Silicosis is a result from using silica based sand without a proper dust retrieval system or respirator. It builds up in your lungs and can cause you to expire far before the powder coating finish you applied does. Other options for the silica sand is glass bead, walnut shells, and various other course medias that can be used prior to powder coating. Research the different alternatives, and find what works best with your powder coating equipment.

Step 3 is considered a baking process, and commonly referred to as out-gassing. Metals can trap gasses in their pours, and can be released when raised to high temperatures. Pre-heating your piece having the powder coating applied to it before hand will reduce the chances of flaws once you finish the powder coating process. Afterwards let the piece cool down to about 120 degrees before applying the powder coat to it. If you must handle the piece at all during this time, be sure to wear latex gloves with no solvents on them or anything as you will contaminate the piece you're working with and possibly ruin the powder coat finish.

Taking the time to properly prepare the piece for powder coating will give you thousands of professional looking jobs without hassle. Just as a carpenter would say... measure twice, cut once... you should always prepare the part twice figuratively speaking before you would apply the powder coating to minimize your chances at a botched job.

Sand Blasting Equipments are used for

Specialized micro-blast or micro-jet machines are available for applications requiring selective surface preparation, material removal and finishing. Blasting makes the surface suitable for subsequent coating operations such as thermal spraying, painting or plating.

The pressure generator: it uses a crankshaft or plunger pump to increase the pressure of the carrier.

There are several important specifications for sandblasters. The media flow is the rate at which the abrasive grain feeds into the system. The blast pressure is the water or air pressure. They are used to create a jet or blast stream for cutting or propelling abrasive particles. The abrasive linear speed is the particle velocity of abrasive grains as first projected from the blast wheel or nozzle.

Some equipment is small enough for portable or handheld use, or can be mounted on a bench, pedestal, cart, hand truck, floor, or skid. Other’s are large enough to be put onto a trailer or vehicle that can be driven to the worksite requiring blasting, such as the side of a steel tank, ship's hull, or building wall. Crawler or track mounted units can uniformly clean or roughen a surface.

On large fixed surfaces, operators guide sandblasters across the surface for cutting or cleaning. Smaller surfaces often require work piece loading. For example, parts can be mounted on a conveyor, tumbler, or spinner. They can also be held by hand and be put any where that we want to. CNC controllers and PC interfaces can be used in conjunction with sandblasters to automate and regulate the delivery of the abrasive.

Some machines refine, roughen or clean surfaces while others debur sharp edges, remove flashing, wash parts, or strip unwanted materials such as heat-treat scale. Other machines peen or burnish glass beads, metal shot or other smooth, rounded shaped media. For example, shafts and turbine blades are sometimes peened or shot blasted because peening improves the fatigue strength of metallic materials by imparting a residual compressive stress on the parts.
