1960s Vintage Quilt Print Pattern

The "Cheater" Quilt Print style first came into use in the late 1800s. The print style is created by placing multiple patterns in a geometric spacing to mimic an actual cut and sewn quilt. Most often in square settings (like the example here), but can certainly utilize diamonds, hexagons, or any other shape used in traditional quilts. We've always loved these vintage textiles because the prints within the shapes usually tell a bit of a story of the era from which they came.

This particular cheater that we've used in our new 1960s Carolina Patchwork Necktie, as the title suggests, was created in the 1960s in a South Carolina mill. The print consists of various blue/white florals reminiscent of Depression Era feedsack prints which were very popular at the time.

While we do love the seemingly random placement of this kind of printed pattern, we have taken great effort to cut each of these limited edition neckties so that there is as much uniformity as possible among the collection. In this way, each necktie is cut from the same optimal section within the print.

As an unexpected pop of color and detail, we used a great 1960s soft green mini calico print in the tipping and back loop.

Gregory Caruso’s ‘Making the American Man’ Documentary Goes to NETFLIX

What makes the American man?

According to a new documentary by Gregory Caruso, the elements would include Marlon Brando in a black leather jacket, “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,” beards and integrity.

For his directorial debut, titled “Making the American Man,” which begins streaming July 1 on Netflix, the University of Southern California graduate interviewed some 44 designers, retailers, manufacturers and blogger in the growing industry that extols American-made grooming supplies, accessories and clothing for men. Forever fascinated by men’s style from the Forties and Fifties, he was driven by a key question: “What companies are doing it that way now?”

The 24-year-old Angeleno was able to shape an informed opinion before starting the two-year project. Throughout high school, he collected books on men’s fashion and tomes that addressed chivalrous gentleman. For a role model, he looked to his paternal grandfather, Dollar Rent A Car founder Henry Caruso, who wore a suit everyday well after his 90th birthday. His father is Rick Caruso, the retail developer behind The Grove and The Americana at Brand in Southern California.

Caruso also swirled briefly in Internet infamy when TV viewers caught him sitting behind CNN journalist Jake Tapper at a GOP debate last September. Until his identity was revealed via a press tour on “Good Morning America,” Cosmopolitan, TMZ and other outlets, he was known on Twitter as #hotdebateguy. (For the record, he supported John Kasich. “I’m disgusted with Donald Trump — he’s lowering the bar,” he said.)

Still, the social media frenzy — “a crazy and ridiculous experience” as he recalled it — helped his film. “That’s how the Netflix deal came about,” he said.

His father also played a pivotal role as both benefactor and beneficiary. He called in a favor to J. Crew chairman and chief executive officer Millard “Mickey” Drexler, who has placed shops for J. Crew and its sister brand Madewell at The Grove and The Americana, for an on-camera interview. He also watched early cuts of the documentary and met with some of the up-and-coming fashion players when he and his son were in New York at the same time. As a result, Shinola is now opening at The Grove.

“It was really cool in that sense — introducing him to smaller shop owners,” Gregory Caruso said.

Caruso’s first-time filmmaker status is betrayed by the absence of a traditional narrative that guides the viewer through a coherent story. The 68-minute documentary opens with an introduction read by Caruso that clocks under four minutes, edifying viewers that manufacturing accounted for 30 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product in 1950 but has fallen to 12 percent in 2016. The subjects — ranging from the proprietors of Brooklyn Circus, San Francisco’s Taylor Stitch and Chicago’s Oxxford Clothes to Jason Schott, whose New York-based family business made Brando’s leather biker jacket from the 1953 cult film “The Wild One” — are granted an open platform to wax on the history of their companies and the state of men’s fashion. What they hold in common is passion for their craft, a sense of integrity and dedication to quality. Caruso also didn’t want to weigh down scenes with statistics and graphics. To that extent, the film appears to be a beautifully shot hybrid of a men’s style blog and an infomercial set to kicky jazz tunes by Loston Harris.

Caruso justified making that decision for the sake of preserving “the purity of the film,” he said.

“I wanted the makers to tell the story,” he continued. “It started seeming more like a true and down-to-earth story and conversation with these people.”

Many of the interviewees lit up in front of the camera, especially when they took a whack at defining masculinity. Scott Freeman from outerwear brand Freeman in Seattle suggested self-reliance, while Joe Lotuff, the founder ofbag maker Lotuff Leather in Providence, R.I., said, “You show up at work, you take care of your family and you do what’s right.” Drexler reasoned that “if they behave like mensches, it’s fine.” Others revealed what they hated about men’s fashion: mustache screenprints, skinny jeans, Affliction T-shirts.

Caruso’s own take on style and masculinity is “it’s important to obviously be who you are and comfortable with who you are.” Moreover, he said, he likes subtlety. “People are trying to be too exuberant in their style. Sometimes men’s fashion gets mistaken for wearing a pink blazer with white pants and being over the top.”

As for the viability of domestic manufacturing, which has added almost 800,000 jobs since 2010, Frank Clegg, who makes high-end bags for his namesake brand and Michael Bastian in Fall River, Mass., summed it up best. “It’s very good that people are interested in quality,” he said, “because that’s the only way manufacturing, I believe, is going to come back to the U.S.”

Caruso is doing his part in supporting the made-in-USA movement. Describing his everyday outfit as “the same pair of jeans, Converse, usually a T-shirt and a ball cap,” he shops from several of the stores and designers featured in the film, including Baxter Finley Barber & Shop, The Hill-Side, Unionmade and Tellason. His fondness for the Fifties will surface in a forthcoming fictitious film about young jazz musicians who journeyed to Central Avenue in South Central Los Angeles to experience the music scene there.

“It’s the height of men’s fashion,” he said. “I think it’s coming back.”

Interview With Erin Krohn Owner of Hammer + Awl

Hammer + Awl located in Madrona, a beautiful neighborhood in Seattle, is known for its fine selection of high quality men's accessories made here in the U.S. We had the privilege to interview, Erin Krohn, the owner of this shop. Read below to find out more about her and how Hammer and Awl became the place to go when looking for those beautifully well crafted pieces.

What inspired you to start this business? Was there ever anything else you thought of doing as a career choice?

Actually, I was inspired to start the shop because of a prior career choice! Well, I'm sort of joking, but there is a bit of truth to it. I am an interior designer and worked in the industry for over 17 years, primarily doing retail design domestically and internationally. Though I enjoyed my design career, I had always envisioned myself owning a small shop filled with unique things that could help define a person's style. The more I thought about it, the more I thought doing a men's version of what I maybe would have done for women would be a more interesting and overlooked niche for Seattle, as there really aren't many boutique shopping options for men in this city.

Madrona seems like such a beautiful neighborhood to visit, with all its shops and family events. What are you enjoying most about your space since moving to your new location?

Madrona IS a beautiful neighborhood! In my prior location I was around the corner off the main commercial street, so I most enjoy being on the main drag here and being a central part of the activity. Also, my neighboring shop is a women's boutique, so we are a great compliment to each other.

While visiting your shop in Madrona, are there any other places you would suggest stopping at, perhaps for a bite to eat?

Absolutely! Depending on your hunger level there are several favorites. Bottlehouse is great for smaller plates and excellent wine. I love getting their wine flights to test out new options and you can't beat their outdoor patio in the summer. Red Cow is another, although they are known for their burgers and steak frites, one of my favorites on their menu is the Frisée & Bacon Salad with poached hen egg. Pair it with an earthy glass of red and I am a happy girl! And of course there is always Molly Moon's, because ice cream counts as a meal, right?

While looking through your shop online I came across so many great items including all the beautiful well-made bags. Can you express some of your thoughts or criteria when choosing these products for your shop?

When looking for product I consider a number of things, usually the first consideration is where the items are made. I focus on primarily US made items from smaller, independent designers. For bags in particular, function is the other top priority. They can be one of the most difficult items to hit that right balance of style that suits the shop and my customer, as well as being functional. But our shoppers are in luck as we stock some winners from the likes of Ernest Alexander, TM1985 and Filson.

How did you come to find General Knot and how do your customers respond their custom products? I believe I initially came across General Knot through a write up on the A Continuous Lean site. Once I discovered them and saw the uniqueness of their products I knew I had to stock them at the shop. General Knot is one of my best selling brands and is customer's love the limited nature of the items because they know they are getting a quality piece that they likely won't find anyone else in Seattle wearing.

While reading your latest blog post (Congratulations on your 15 year wedding anniversary, by the way!) we love how you were able to personally test out some of the products you carry in your shop, all of which seemed to really work out great! Do you like to travel often and what would you say is your favorite vacation spot?I travel less than I used to since opening the shop, but Anthony & I get away when we can for long weekends or combine work and pleasure with trade shows and/or buying trips. Two totally different vacation faves would have to be Winthrop, WA. and Thailand with a stop over in Hong Kong on the way. Winthrop because it is a quirky little western style town in the North Cascades surrounded by incredible hiking trails; plus, getting there from Seattle is one of the most breathtaking drives. It's great to hang out under the stars with a drink after exhausting ourselves on the trail all day. Thailand because, well it's Thailand, and the beaches are incredible. From Phuket to Ko Samui and Cha-am - we have yet to be disappointed on a trip there. The people are some of the most friendly and welcoming and it's and it's impossible to not leave feeling rejuvenated.

We will be celebrating our two year shop anniversary in mid October and can't wait! There will be a little trunk show of sorts with our friends Whiskey & Honey, originally from Austin but now in Seattle, as well as some yet to be determined other good things!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and although most of us are reminded of the severity of the disease on a daily basis, this annual campaign is a good reminder of how important early detection of cancer really is. It also gives us the opportunity to help others who are dealing with the disease while also balancing other difficult tasks that life throws at us all every single day. This year alone there will be an estimated 1,658,370 new cancer cases diagnosed in the United States alone. With those high numbers it is easy to say that we all are either dealing with cancer in our own families or know others who are currently fighting it.

Throughout the years there have been so many wonderful organizations that have been developed to help bring awareness and raise money to help those in need. Community Cares is a very special local non-profit organization . They help patients undergoing chemo and radiation treatments by offering everyday services like housekeeping, laundry services, food shopping and transportation for the patient and their family during that critical time in their care. By partnering with local businesses, Community Cares makes life easier for woman who are currently fighting cancer as well as other illnesses. Life can be stressful for anyone, especially a mother who is not only receiving cancer treatments but also has to worry about things like making sure her family is fed and the house is kept clean. Community Cares helps families by providing these services, relieving them of these worries so that she can focus on getting better.

This month General Knot & Co. is just one of the many businesses that is helping to raise money for these much needed services. We will be featuring our very own “Pink Collection” consisting of Neckties, bow tie and pocket square. 100% of the profits made on these products will be donated to this amazing organization.

By supporting local charities, we can each make a difference in our communities and help those individuals that need so many different levels of care.

How and when did North American Quality Purveyors come to be? What inspired you to start this business?

We are about to turn 2 years old this coming September, which is really exciting! Before I had the idea for NAQP, I had been buying clothes solely made in North America for a year or so and was having a difficult time finding the brands I wanted to wear, not only in Calgary, but in Canada as a whole. Then during a trip to New York I went to a handful of incredible shops (shoutout to Hickorees, Palmer Trading Co., Gentry, Blue in Green & Nepenthes) that really inspired me to take the matter into my own hands and do my best to bring more of these brands into my own backyard and in turn provide local access to a plethora of stuff that wasn't necessarily easy to come by in our city.

While looking through your shop online I came across so many great items (I personally love the PF Flyers). Can you express some of your thoughts or criteria when choosing these products for your shop?

Mostly I look for stuff that stands out, and by "stands out", I don't necessarily mean a bold print or loud colour, but can be something that's beautifully made or a carefully selected fabric, yet the design has to have timeless and enduring qualities, both in style and construction. PF Flyers are a great example of that. They're really well made, comfortable, will genuinely never go out of style & everyone looks good in a sneaker like that.

How did you come to find General Knot and how do your customers respond their custom products?

I feel like I knew about GK beforehand but I actually ended up walking by their booth at the Capsule trade show the summer before I opened the shop and met Andrew & Ann. They showed me the line, gave me a bandana and by that fall we were working together.

People really dig the General Knot gear, not only because its nicely made, but the fact that there's most often an age to the fabrics and as they are vintage/deadstock/rare they're also limited. Add to that, we only bring in one of each fabric- mostly because they're too cool and unique to end up going to a party and having some other guy sporting the same tie/square etc- so for Calgarians its likely they'll be the only person in the city who has one!

While visiting your shop in Calgary, where would be a great place to get something to eat?

For cheap eats, right by the shop I'd tell them to go to the Delightful Cafe, which is a great family run diner that does great Vietnamese, Chinese and American, which I highly recommend their Pho & Curry Chicken. That being said, Calgary's food scene is burgeoning these days, so you would be hard pressed to have a bad meal. A few of my personal favorites- which run the gamut, price wise- would be Model Milk, the Brasserie, Native Tongues Taqueria, River Cafe, Aida's Mediterranean Bistro, Wasabi Sushi, Tubby Dog, Anju & Inglewood Pizza.

Are there any upcoming events in your area that people should definitely check out?

We have an event we're planning right now in the summer to bring a bunch of like-minded local businesses together for a day of shopping, snacking and booze but it's still getting worked out at the moment. We'll also certainly be throwing a big 2nd year anniversary party in Mid September, at which we'll be launching some great exclusive products, so that's something for which to look forward!

I noticed by reading your blogs that your dog, Doug, is a big part of NAQP. How long as Doug been part of your family and how does he interact with your customers?

Funny thing is Doug isn't our dog at all, he just comes to visit for a few weeks a year when his owners go away on Doug-less trips. He is by far the most calm, patient and gentle dog we could ever have at the shop! Although he's not ours for keeps, he's been a part of our fam since we opened, really. We get to enjoy his company probably 4 times a year, maybe more sometimes and each time is better than the last. He's a really funny dog, as he's not incredibly social, yet enjoys the company of people. Although you might not know it. Some people don't even notice he's in the shop because he's so calm and quiet. Every once in a while, he'll quietly sidle up to greet customers, but for the most part, you won't notice him until you almost trip over his sleeping carcass in the middle of the floor. He's a magical once in a lifetime kind of pup.

Follow North American Quality Purveyors on Instagram and on twitter @northamericanqp to keep up to date with all their happenings. They would love for you to stop in if ever in Calgary but if not you can always visit their online shop at shopnorthamerican.com

Although he is not a professional Mixologist, my Step-Father is no slouch when it comes to the art of creative cocktail making. Never does a visit take place without one of John's new cocktail experimentations or found recipes being introduced to us as we are greeted at the door. "Try it. Come on!" he prods until we agree to a taste.

To his credit, most of the drinks are quite tasty, but the only one we have ever asked for the recipe and continue to replicate ourselves is what he calls a "Montana Manhattan". This particular libation was picked up from a fishing buddy on a recent trip he took to Montana (thus the name). Unlike the classic Manhattan which requires sweet vermouth and bitters, the Montana version swaps those ingredients out for Tawny Port. Give it a try. Come on, you will like it!

Montana Manhattan Cocktail

Makes one cocktail

2 ounces Canadian Whiskey (such as Crown Royal)

3/4 ounce Tawny Port

Maraschino cherry for garnish

Combine Canadian whiskey and tawny port in a shaker filled with ice

Shake for a couple of seconds to combine

Pour into frosted martini glass that has been chilled in the freezer for at least 30 minutes

For over eleven years, Stone Barns has been operating just around the corner from where we live in Westchester, NY. In all of those years, I haven't found myself visiting one of their agricultural festivals or events. Not even the world famous Blue Hill restaurant, that has existed within Stone Barns' walls since it opened, could successfully draw me to its acreage. Oh, the shame...

Well, a very generous invitation from my friend Ben Hider solved all that and showed me what I had been missing.

Stone Barns is 80 acres of non-profit educational farmland, producing large varieties of organic agriculture and livestock now serving a large co-op, community and thriving restaurant.

Throughout the year, various festivities are planned to highlight the farm's seasonal calendar. This past weekend was the Sheep Shearing Fest when all the farm's sheep are clipped of their wool and readied for the warm Summer months.

Chances are you may have encountered this issue before … Be it the shirt and necktie conundrum of what patterns work together or trying to navigate assembling a check suit with just the right pair of stripe socks. The art of pattern mixing can be mastered by following a few simple rules.

To illustrate these style commandments we will be using the ubiquitous bow tie and its sidekick, the pocket square to show how pattern mixing can be effortless and effective. Plus we promise you will not end up looking like your 7th grade science teacher.

The idea with each of the following rules is that the bow and the square should compliment the entire look rather than overtake it. While some gents prefer to go the route of matching bow and square, these mix and match options will give you much more versatility.

The key here is to make sure that in addition to the commonality of color, the scales of each pattern differ enough so they compliment each other rather than fighting for attention.

“Doing what one loves is never considered work.” General Knot creates limited edition neckwear and accessories that are made in the U.S.A. (designed in Bedford, NY and made in New England.) They use rare and vintage fabrics collected from around the world to offer uniquely designed and enduring products that stand the test of time.

We got to catch up with to Andrew Payne who is the Founder and Creative Director over at General Knot & Co. and asked him a few questions about work, life and who would play him in his big screen debut:

Tell us the story of how you got started?

AP: After directing design teams in NYC for years, Ann and I had built up quite a collection of vintage clothing and fabrics, which we both love to wear and draw inspiration. With that and the desire to branch out on our own, utilize the skills we’ve picked up along the way, and combine our love of design and manufacturing, we took the big leap with General Knot & Co. in Fall 2010.

What was your first job?

AP: A paperboy, at age 10. Oh, do you mean professionally? My first "real" job during and after college graduation was sweater designer at Perry Ellis, with his (the actual man, Perry Ellis) men’s wear team in NYC.

What are three words to describe your brand?

AP:Unique, Fun, Collectable

When you were a kid what did you want to be when you grew up?

AP: Honestly, I am doing what I’ve wanted to do from a very young age. I began collecting fabric in grade school and just continued to art school and onward. I am a fortunate guy with few regrets.

What was your big break?

AP: Working at Perry Ellis, alongside great designers like Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Brian Bubb, and Tracey Reese. All of whom were very generous with their time (even helping me with my homework) and happy to share their expertise and make introductions on my behalf.... (The entire interview can be found on the Luminary Blog)

Thank you to our partners at Luminary for taking the time to chat!

One of the most rewarding things about having your own company is being able to meet new friends and colleagues along the way. Case in point, one of our recent grooms who we collaborated with on custom bows for his wedding.

Brendan Petri, a Harvard grad with a background in economics switched gears recently and decided to follow his love of leather care by creating a superb line of conditioning products that will revive the dullest of leather shoes, luggage or furniture. He has launched Petri Polish with great success and in a very short time he has garnered very positive accolades from respected shoe companies as well as having been recognized as a finalist in Martha Stewart American Made for 2014.

In this post we wanted to not only introduce you to Brendan's excellent products but also feature the amazing limited edition handmade walnut valets that he carries on his site. This is indeed the finest gift you could give a gentleman who cares about his brogues and double monks. Follow Petri Polish on their Facebook page to see what is happening in this exciting new company.

One Orange Shop | Nantucket Outpost

Growing up in the same general area of Connecticut, our parents having worked together for years, and sharing a similar appreciation for design and American manufacturing; it was upon finally meeting Jon Terbell that I felt we had already known each other forever.. During the three years since our first meeting, our perspective brands (he's the man behind New England-based shirt brand, Jack Robie) have continued to grow and evolve alongside, with frequent opportunities to work together at various pop ups and by Jon's offer to join in on the fun at his One Orange Shop in Nantucket. We always look forward to being a part of this island destination.

We recently had a chance to catch up with Jon and run a little Q&A by him:

1.) Tell us a little about yourself and how did the concept of One Orange came to be?

JT: I grew up and went to school in Connectictut. Now I run the shirting brand Jack Robie out of NYC and operate our retail concept One Orange on Nantucket. Split time between the two places. The store came about from wanting a physical location to represent ourselves, sell our shirts and curate a selection of some other favorite stuff.

2.) How important is a good story to you?

JT: A good story is everything to me. Specifically in the store, we like to have a personal connection to each of the brands we carry. The personal story behind the product is often times more interesting, and more powerful, than the technical details of its production. Every brand and every guy is different. Our guys take pride in their own stories and they like to connect with the stories behind the things they buy. Technically sound products are a prerequisite, I am more interested in the human side of things.

3.) How/Why did you guys decide to launch in Nantucket?

JT: I have always loved Nantucket. The island has so much beauty, energy, history, culture, and a unique sense of place all rolled in to one. It's a world all on its own. In town there was nothing like what we imagined for One Orange. We thought that it would fit the overall culture well and there would be an appetite for it.

Summer color, texture, and high quality are plentiful at One Orange Shop in Nantucket

4.) What cities are you eyeing next? How long do you stay in one location?

JT: 2014 will be our third season on island and I think we're now ready to further build upon what we've established here. We're eyeing a year-round stateside store opening for the holidays this year.

5.) How you decided what brands to carry?

JT: It's all personal relationships. We don't "go to market" like most stores. We've made friends through our Jack Robie brand at pop-up markets, I have friends from school that have ended up in this world, and my network is constantly introducing me to new stuff and people. In the end we always find our stuff by connecting through people we like.

6.) Is it becoming easier to find made in America brands?

JT: Yes, just because there are more of them. There are so many great products being made on small scales and that business model lends itself to making things domestically. Since there is now a growing demand for these goods the supply is naturally growing as well.

Jon Terbell outside the One Orange Shop in Nantucket

7.) I have 25 hours in Nantucket. What do I do? Where do I eat?

JT: There is a lot to do on Nantucket in 25 hours. It's a uniquely beautiful place and the food is amazing. Here's a rundown and a bit of guidance on some of my favorite activities/places to eat.

-Breakfast at Black Eyed Susan's on India Street. It's a tiny gourmet counter / hole in the wall restaurant. Everything is exceptional especially the french toast with orange jack daniels butter. Coffee is strong, tasty and bottomless. If you're seated by 9am there's no wait.

-Wander around town. From Black Eyed Susan's you take a left and wander uphill through narrow one way cobblestone streets. Eventually make your way back from the top of Main Street to see the homes built by 19th century Nantucket whaling tycoons, most famously the "Three Bricks." The island is regarded as one of the best historically preserved places in the US. The whole island is a historic district, it's like walking through a different time and place. And then downtown near the harbor, closer to reality, there are tons interesting stores. No chains on the island, it's the law (except for Ralph who opened his store before the law was put in place and was then grandfathered in).

-Go to the beach. Nantucket is just a giant sand bar and one can walk all the way around its perimeter on sand. The beaches are simply awesome. The south shore has 20+ miles facing open Atlantic Ocean and you can't go wrong. My favorites are Maddaquashim and Russell's Way.

-Lunch has to be sandwiches from Something Natural or Provisions. Both places are wildly popular and super crowded for a reason. Call it in so you don't have to wait in line. Another quick option, next to Provisions, there's the Straight Wharf Seafood store and they secretly sell the best lobster roll on island.

-Go to Cisco Brewery after the beach. It is an awesome setting with a crowd that's a real melting pot of local and summer culture on Nantucket. Dynamite beer and cocktails from their namesake brewery and sister distillery Triple Eight. There's always live music and raw bars.

- Dinner has to be Straight Wharf. There are probably 10 or so nice restaurants where I would be very confident sending any foodie (Company of the Cauldron & Oran Mor are my other top choices), but for just one shot to represent the island I'd send you to Straight Wharf. Amazing inventive local dishes and a very fun bar for after dinner. After that everyone goes to the Chicken Box for late night dancing and a continued party scene. Nantucket is a very social place.

Jon has graciously welcomed General Knot & Co. into the One Orange Shop since its inaugural run three years ago. We have promised ourselves each and every Summer that we'd make time to visit in person- and this year will be the time we do. Actually on the calendar- Look out One Orange!

Esquire Magazine / Sharp Event Wrap-Up

As the proliferation of the "Pop Up" phenomenon continues, a person can never be quite sure what there is to find at such events. Last weekend brought us to Esquire Magazine's partnered pop up with Sharp Events in SoHo NYC. As this was their first event of its kind, we too were not sure what to expect.

Happily, the event went off without a hitch and was well-received by curious shoppers and a slew of fellow brands of whom we had a chance to meet.

AUTODROMO

Created by industrial designer, Bradley Price, Autodromo designs and produces some of the most beautiful driving accessories on the market. With such precision and careful detailing, their glasses, watches, and driving gloves will easily find a place in your collection of favorites. What strikes me about Bradley's designs is that they have a look that is both very vintage and very modern, all at once. The quality of construction is also impeccable.

CADET

Designed and made in Brooklyn, NY. Cadet is a brand to watch. The team of Brad Schmidt and Raul Arevalo approach menswear in a way that most companies do not... they focus on fit. Most brands leave the fine-tuning of fit until the end (and often leave it up to their overseas factories). Not Cadet. They design from the ground up, refining every seam's shape for a proper balance. In the end, they've made the best fitting shirts on the market (yes, I went home with one).

Give their whole line a try. You will not be disappointed.

The venerable New York designer, Ernest has carefully made a name for himself by designing wearable menswear of which every guy can identify. A full collection of apparel and accessories that stand the test of time- detailed but not over designed.

COCKPIT USA

Known for their high-flying bomber jackets, Cockpit has been in business since the 1980s, and actually is the official supplier of said bomber jackets to the US Air Force. Not a small achievement, as those Air Force folks are not know for taking anything second rate.

John Cafarelli's Ernest Supplies is taking the world of grooming products by storm and seems to be catching everyone's eye in the process- GQ's Jim Moore being one of them. It's rare too that excellent packaging goes hand in hand with great product, but Ernest Supplies has that all covered. The cooling packaged shave gel and moisturizer have effectively sidelined all other products in my morning routine.

Years of receiving our purchases from companies who send their products off in poly bags and carelessly thrown into boxes keeps us motivated. We figure that the entire package, not just the contents, should be given equal attention and that you will appreciate (as we do) the full presentation of opening your purchase when it arrives at your door. Properly designed packaging can be two-fold in purpose too, satisfying both esthetics and protection during shipping. After all, all the pretty packaging in the world isn't going to matter if your new necktie shows up in a smashed box.

We are thankful for Viola E. Sutanto including us in her new book called Packaging Your Crafts. Her book covers the packaging of clothing to cookies and everything in between, proving that the devil is in the details.

Anyone who reads through our product descriptions knows that we love a good story. As with all of our fabrics, everything has a story. Everything. Being curious, forever asking questions, finding what makes things tick, a story always emerges.

Part of our design research always involves exploring the where, what and how of the wonderful fabrics that present themselves to us from the far reaches of our world. Luckily we work with a lot of very patient vintage collectors who are willing to share their research and knowledge. Sometimes though, we purchase things with or without a story, simply because we like them. (To be honest, we only purchase things because we like them- there's no better barometer).

Being collectors ourselves, of "vintage things", we frequent antique shows, estate sales, and flea markets. The Rose Bowl Flea Market being a favorite haunt. Never to disappoint, the Rose Bowl is a treasure trove of Americana- furniture, memorabilia, farming tools, kitchen equipment and tableware, linens/fabrics, clothing, and more. As a lover of tee shirts and graphics, vintage tee's are always in my sights. These I buy for their particular personal appeal and not necessarily for any "investment" purposes. After all, T-shirts are meant to be worn (and collected).

The above t-shirt was found during a Rose Bowl research trip back when I worked for Tommy Hilfiger (hence, the red white & blue graphic). Nonetheless, I took a liking to it and used it in a post I wrote on The First Few. For one reason or another and it stayed with me until receiving a random email back in the Fall from Tom Shannon, the adult who became of the young boy below.

Tom and his family spent the better part of the 1970s living in Indonesia while his father worked for Dravo in South Sulawesi. T-shirts like this were made and given to employees for events and ground-breakings. Many were probably lost through time and the many miles between here and there. Fortunately for Tom, this particular shirt ended up back in his hands after making its way through LA and back to New York. He reached out to me via my blog, sharing his family's story and hoping to give said shirt to his ailing father as a piece of family-related nostalgia. I was all for it- who was I to stand in the way of a t-shirt reunion!

Through the years, we (all people) acquire and consume various articles of clothing and rarely learn anything from their past lives. Of course this becomes far more interesting with vintage clothing. Each piece passing from one hand to another, generation to generation, stopping for a short time before moving on (these are the thoughts that run through our minds while rummaging through the Rose Bowl).

Playing my small part in bringing this t-shirt full circle gave me a sense of being a part of a bigger picture, something more than just an old tee shirt.

Yes, there is an endless array of skate decks, decorated with world class graphic art (and plenty decorated with total garbage).
Our friend Jake Eshelman, of Procured Design, has officially moved the needle on skateboard design. Combining great American design and ingenuity with the desire to create an enduring piece of (usable) art pushed Jake to start Side Project Skateboards.

From "Jamie's Dinners"

The prep time for this dish is literally minutes but it does require slow, gentle cooking. However, in return for your patience, what happens in the pan from just a couple of ingredients is an absolute joy and never fails, so it's a good one to serve if you have guests. Basically the skin of the chicken goes beautifully crisp and the meat becomes sticky and tender and falls away from the bone, while the tomatoes are slow-roasting and creating the most fabulous broth. The finished dish can be flaked into warm salads, tossed with some cooked and drained pappardelle or simply eaten as is. A great recipe.

Serves 4

4 chicken legs, jointed (or 4 regular legs and 4 thighs)

sea salt & freshly ground black pepper

a big bunch of fresh basil, leaves picked, stalks finely chopped

2 big handfuls of red and yellow cherry tomatoes, halved

1 whole bulb of garlic, broken into cloves and peeled

1 fresh red chili, finely chopped

olive oil

optional: 1 14oz can of cannellini beans, drained

optional: 2 handfuls of new potatoes, scrubbed

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Season your chicken pieces all over and put them into a snug-fitting pan in one layer. Throw in all the basil leaves and stalks, then chuck in your tomatoes. Scatter the garlic cloves into the pan with the chopped chili and drizzle over some olive oil. Mix around a bit, pushing the tomatoes underneath. Place in the oven for 1 1/2 hours, turning the tomatoes halfway through, until the chicken skin is crisp and the meat falls off the bone. If you fancy, you can add the cannellini beans or some sliced new potatoes to the pan and cook them with the chicken.

Enjoy!

By way of the Internet, this big beautiful world of ours gets smaller and smaller- in a good way. Said shop is Kickstart, a brick & mortar and online shop offering life's key pieces to guys who live to have fun.

We fell for Kickstart right away ("you had me at hello") and felt the need to share. We were lucky enough to have a few minutes to ask Jon Hreinsson, the man behind Kickstart, a few questions:

Please give some insight into the concept behind Kickstart. We’re intrigued by its unique approach to the world of motorcycling and mens style.

JH: Kickstart touches the nerve in every man who hasn't stopped having fun and likes motorcycles, cars, yachts, good food, outdoor life etc. The concept of the store is rather straightforward; we want to build up a closet of the “basic” pieces every man needs. You have to have your perfect pair of jeans, maybe 4 or 5 pairs – some have more – you have to have your ties and/or your bowties, field jacket, your parka, and all this stuff. So we’re trying to get a closet together of what in our opinion are the best basics. That’s why we don’t care about fashion. If army parkas go out of fashion we don’t care, we still have to have it in the shop, because for us it’s a basic.”

Scandinavian/European men have always been comfortable with style. As American men are just now coming around to it, are you seeing an influence from the States?

JH: Well I am not a specialist, but I have a gut feeling. Iceland is a bit apart from Scandinavia, being midway between USA and Europe and there are as much Celtic genes in us as Scandinavian. We have always been able to pick out the best of both worlds. But surely USA has influences on Scandinavia – and Europe as whole, just look at Germany, The Pike Brothers for instance. There is a growing culture in picking out European and USA made clothing and Items, especially quality and hand made such as General Knot & Co, Nigel Cabourn in UK, Red Wing to name a few. We are getting tired of bad quality. – And we are starting to get embarrassed with outrageous low salarys and bad conditions of, for instance, the Chinese worker. Most of my customers want to pay more for European or USA made clothing and items, and the interest is growing.

Please describe, if you will, the typical Kickstart customer.

JH: Kickstart is young, established in January 2012, so to be honest, I can not describe the typical customer yet, but he is middle to upperclass and lives in Reykjavik.

As the owner of a shop built around motorcycles, what is your personal preference in motorcycles? Classic? Vintage? Racing?

JH: I like all motorcycles, so to speak, but my main interest is in Classics and Vintage, not necesarely old bikes. I love the new Triumphs with their vintage look: the Scrambler, the Bonneville and the Thruxton. My main bike, riding it nearly every day to work is a Triumph Legend, it is a 2001 model but has this nice Old Style look and is good for riding both in the City and long distances into the countryside. I also have a BSA C15 1967 and a Yamaha XS 650 1977. But to be honest I also like Vintage Cars, Hot Rod Cars and Yachts … Toys for boys.

What’s a perfect weekend in and around Reykjavik? We hear a lot of great things about your city, but only know it from afar. Please shed some light on what makes it such a special place to live and work?

JH: Reykjavik is a small town with the ambitiousness of a big City. I am born here in 1957, and let me tell you Reykjavik has changed a lot since then. I can remember, as a teenager, when there was only one or two places to go for french fries in the city and we did not know what a pizza was back then – well, life was not complicated at least. But today Reykjavik offers everything and as said earlier, best from both sides of the Atlantic. Reykjavik is rather young with around 117,000 people (the whole population in Iceland is around 320,000 ) and for me it is a beautiful City, the small scale makes everything within easy reach. I live in the Centre so a perfect weekend for me is walking downtown to a Café on a Saturday morning and reading the weekend papers. After only 20 minutes drive out of town you are in untouched nature: Mountains, lava, lakes, rivers, hot springs, clean crisp air, unspoiled beaches and the Atlantic ocean, so a ride into the countryside is vital for me on weekends – I am not much of a party guy, so I do not go much out on the pubs or the bars in weekends. There are plenty of very nice ones though and the food in the restaurants and grills is excellent. I can promise, if you come to Reykjavik, It is impossible to get bored.

Truly vintage wool fabric is hard to come by. May it be weather or water, the dreaded moth, or Father Time's persistent wear, wool only lasts the years if cared for. Fortunately for us, we know a great many obsessive fabric-loving collectors who are happy to share their treasures.

When it comes capturing and showing off color, it's hard to beat wool. The fiber has a natural sheen and depth unlike anything else and makes for smooth-finished fabrics that aid . All in all, wools are a great yearly addition to your look and we're happy to have so many great pieces for you.

Enjoy!
