Oklahoma makes College Football Playoff case by beating Texas for Big 12 title with defense

It is hard to believe we’re saying this, but Oklahoma’s final argument for the College Football Playoff was made in part by its defense.

Yeah, the Sooners’ offense did what it does – including a grinding drive for the clinching score. The highlights will be Kyler Murray doing what he does, or maybe tight end Grant Calcaterra’s one-handed touchdown catch with two minutes left. But that came after a sack-safety that had dramatically altered momentum, allowing the offense to forge a two-score lead. And the Sooners finished Texas off with an interception to win their fourth consecutive Big 12 championship.

No one is going to suggest the Sooners’ defense is much more than substandard; but against Texas, they were better than they’d been for most of the season.

“This team is still getting better,” Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said. “Our defense is playing better and better. Our best ball is still ahead of us.”

Here are takeaways from No. 5 Oklahoma’s 39-27 win against No. 9 Texas:

- The matchup was exactly what the Big 12 envisioned when it restarted its conference championship game: Its two perennial heavyweights slugging it out (and in a full stadium: the attendance of 83,114 was not only a record for a Big 12 championship, but for any conference championship game).

Despite the loss, Texas would play in the Sugar Bowl if Oklahoma gets into the playoff, giving the Big 12 two New Year’s Six bowl berths.

Can you imagine Lincoln Riley and Tom Herman hooking it up in rematches over the next few years – especially if the Longhorns continue their upward trajectory to the point where the championship game becomes a de facto quarterfinal, with implications for both squads? It’s a delicious thought.

Oklahoma tops Texas to make playoff case

- Kyler Murray was superb again, finishing a Heisman campaign with a strong statement. Murray was 25-of-34 for 379 yards and three touchdowns (418 total yards), connecting with 10 different receivers.

As usual, there were several jaw-dropping moments. This time they mostly came through the air. It might get overlooked in the highlights, but Murray’s short touchdown pass to tight end Calcaterra was something special: a flat-footed, sidearm dart on target. It resembled nothing so much as a shortstop coming up and firing a snap throw to first base (which probably shouldn’t surprise anyone, considering Murray’s other sport).

By now we’re used to the playmaking. But for Murray, locked in a Heisman race with Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, it was an impressive finish.

- When defensive backs Parnell Motley and Tre Norwood combined for a deflection and interception, respectively, that extinguished Texas’ last shot, it was a startling development, no?

But it was only one of several critical plays made by the Sooners’ defense, and it was more than that: Not counting the end of the first half, Texas had 10 possessions and scored on only four (we know – but considering the first 12 games). More significant: Oklahoma held Texas to 88 yards rushing on 32 attempts, a 2.8-yard average.

And in the fourth quarter, Texas’ three possessions ended punt, safety, interception. The latter two plays were huge.

Just after Texas had forced a fumble near the goal line that felt like a huge momentum swing, Tre Brown blasted Sam Ehlinger for a safety and a five-point lead with 8:27 left. Then Motley and Norwood clinched victory with the interception with 51 seconds left.

Oklahoma’s ability to make at least occasional stops and come up with big plays might have actually been a carryover from the week before. West Virginia piled up 56 points and 704 yards, but the Sooners came up with several stops and – much more important – two defensive touchdowns.

Let’s float a contrary notion: It’s just possible the Sooners’ defense played better against the Mountaineers than we all thought – than it had all season – but it was camouflaged by the stress imposed by the best offense Oklahoma had faced all season. Regardless, the Sooners had a lot more success in slowing Texas than in their first meeting – and more success than they’ve had against most opponents.

- Texas limited Oklahoma’s running game. The Sooners averaged 264.3 rushing yards during the regular season, providing balance and making the passing game even more devastating (five times Oklahoma rushed and passed for at least 300 yards). But in the first half Oklahoma had 53 yards on 17 carries; it finished with 129 yards on 40 attempts (3.2-yard average).

In a stunner, the WBC heavyweight title fight between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury was ruled a draw. USA TODAY Sports' Martin Rogers breaks down how it happened with a round-by-round analysis of the bout.

Decision: No one will be complaining if we get a rematch after this stunning fight. Wilder and the entire crowd thought it was over in Round 12 when Tyson Fury hit the deck. Wilder's fiancee even yelled out congratulations. But it wasn't over, and surely Fury did more than enough, despite the knockdowns, to come out on top. Wilder did not raise his arms as the bell rang. Looks like he knows what is coming.

BUT NO!

THE FIGHT IS SCORED A DRAW!! Scandalous judging and a huge black eye for boxing. Split decision, with one judge scoring it for each fighter and a third having it as a 113-113 draw. What an embarrassing way for a magnificent fight to end. Wilder got very lucky here and despite what he is now saying, he knows it. Let's hope we see it again.

Here is how the action unfolded.

Round 12: Oh my word! Fury, totally in control, gets blasted to the canvas with a massive right and a clubbing left! his head bounces off the canvas! He's not going to get up! But he does, just in the nick of time. Wilder looks to finish. Fury is out on his feet. It is only a matter of time. But Fury holds on, and his head is starting to clear. Wilder is loading up. One more huge shot will finish it. Fury is getting his legs back. Great action. Incredible fight. Fury is landing a couple of punches in the final minute. The bell rings. 10-8 Wilder. 115-111 Fury on my card.

Round 11: Fury continues to stick to the game plan and Wilder still has no response. It has been a heck of a performance from Fury and there is only one way Wilder can save his unbeaten record, by securing a knockout. Fury's jab is long and precise and Wilder can't get inside it. 10-9 Fury. Fury leads 107-101.

Round 10: Strong response from Fury following his worst round of the fight. Wilder was determined to get stuck in, but Fury's head had completely cleared and he asserted himself with a feinting jab followed by fierce straight shots. Wilder is not enjoying this. Fury's feet still moving briskly. Wilder landed one of 39 punches in the round, extraordinary. 10-9 Fury. Fury leads 97-92.

Round 9: Fury's corner says before the round that Wilder "isn't smart enough" to work out this puzzle. Maybe, but he's strong enough perhaps! Fury goes down!! Fury was taunting Wilder, who stung his with a straight one to the chin, then followed up with two more telling shots. Fury gets up at nine and then holds on. Fury recovers late in the round and starts to taunt again. Wilder full of confidence, suddenly. What a fight. 10-8 Wilder. Fury leads 87-83.

Round 8: Fury is taunting Wilder, while bamboozling him at the same time. This is how it went when Fury stunned Klitschko in Dusseldorf three years ago, putting on a remarkable showcase of boxing. Wilder can't get inside, and is getting totally outthought at distance. Fury connects with a couple of strong jabs and just seems to be a step quicker. 10-9 Fury. Fury leads 79-73.

Round 7: We are getting to the point where Deontay Wilder's only hope is to land one, huge, fight-changing blow. His hooks are getting wider and wider, and Fury is slipping out of trouble easily and countering strongly. Fury's jab is keeping his rival at bay. Wilder gets cuffed on the side of the head by a counter punch late in the round. His power is being blunted. 10-9 Fury. Fury leads 69-64.

Round 6: Wilder continues to struggle, just can't get anything landed cleanly. Wilder blinks after being stung, but not rocked, by a sharp straight shot early in the round. Fury looks too big and lumbering to be mobile, but he is speedy enough to stay out of danger. Showtime has Fury well ahead and I agree. 10-9 Fury. Fury leads 59-55.

Round 5: Floyd Mayweather just said he thinks Fury is leading 5-0 in rounds and it is easy to see why. Who knows how the judges will call it - this is boxing, after all - but Fury is in charge and is avoiding Wilder's best shots. Wilder continues to look for the big bomb but he seems in danger of running out of ideas. Fury clips him with a strong left and right cross toward the end of the round. If Fury had been more active he would have won the round clearly, as it is he edges it. 10-9 Fury. Fury leads 49-46.

Round 4: Looks like a trickle of blood from Fury's nose but he is controlling the action. Wilder is letting go with some big shots but hardly anything is landing. Showtime says his connection rate is 16 percent, compared to 53 percent in his previous title bouts. If there was any doubt about Fury's ability to come back to fitness, it has been answered so far. 10-9 to Fury. Fury leads 39-37.

Round 3: Traveling fans are happy after a strong third from Fury. His movement and taunting bothered Wilder there, much like it did when he upset Wladimir Klitschko. Fury far more accurate with his straight shots, Wilder firing and missing too often for his liking. 10-9 Fury. Fury leads 29-28 after three.

Round 2: Tight round in which Fury stayed at safe distance for the most part. But Wilder got in two good strikes in the closing seconds and probably did enough to shade the round. Entertaining stuff so far. Everything to play for. 10-9 Wilder. 19-19 on after two.

Round 1: Really entertaining first round that starts with plenty of clowning from Fury, mixed in with some rangy jabs that hit the mark. Wilder is struggling to get settled, being confronted with unorthodox angles. Wilder more confident throwing leather in the final minute, but gets caught by a Fury counter. First round to the visitor. 10-9 Fury. Fury leads 10-9.

Pre-fight: Plenty of noise in the building, but most of it is for Fury. British boxing is going through a serious boom and that country's fight fans have always traveled in numbers, especially for the likes of Ricky Hatton and Lennox Lewis. Must feel like a home fight for Fury in some ways, Wilder will try to silence them - and quickly. Both men are now in the ring, Fury goofing around as he entered the arena, followed by Wilder, wearing a sparkling gold crown and matching face mask.

Background: Wilder is the champ, entering the bout with the WBC heavyweight belt and a 40-0 record that includes 39 knockouts.

Fury (entering 27-0), meanwhile, has battled back into the ring after a two-year absence during which he battled depression and other demons.

Scoreboard: Mickelson wins 1 up in 22 holes

22nd hole: Par 3, 93 yards

Woods finally hits the green, but misses his putt from inside 10 feet. Mickelson, inside 5 feet this time, makes his and wins the $9 million.

21st hole: Par 3, 93 yards

After Woods airmails the green -- again -- Mickelson stuffs his shot to 5 feet, 11 inches. And he misses. Mickelson doesn't make Woods make his 5-footer to halve the hole. "I don't want to win that way," Mickelson says.

20th hole: Par 3, 93 yards

This wasn't a real hole. This was invented, a tee on the practice putting green. Tiger airmails the green, but gets up and down for par. Mickelson misses from just inside 18 feet. On we go ...

19th hole: Par 5, 500 yards

Woods grumbled to himself all day that he couldn't hit a good putt. With a putt just inside 8 feet to win the whole thing, Woods misses again. On we go ...

18th hole: Par 5, 500 yards

After the drama on 17, the two head to 18 with all $9 million riding on the short par-5. Woods goes just over the back of the green in two; Mickelson hits the center of the green in two. Woods makes his 5-footer for birdie, then concedes Mickelson's 4-footer. On we go ...

Tiger makes a 5'1" birdie putt on the 18th and then gave Phil Mickelson his birdie putt from just inside 4'. WE'RE GONNA HAVE A $9MILLION DOLLAR WINNER TAKE ALL PLAYOFF!! Playing the par 5 18th hole once.

See if this sounds familiar: Both have to scramble for par. Mickelson hits a perfect, classic Phil flop shot to kick-in range. Woods hits an awful chip after missing the green and then misses the putt to fall back into a hole with three holes left.

The chatter between Tiger and Phil has been, well, mostly non-existent. "We got into our old mode of trying to beat each other's brains in," Woods says as they walk down the 15th fairway.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight No. 3 contender, Curtis Blaydes, will attempt to keep his spot in line while also exacting revenge on a past foe when he collides with former title contender Francis Ngannou at the upcoming UFC Fight Night 141 mixed martial arts (MMA) event on Fight Pass, set for Sat., Nov. 24, 2018 inside Cadillac Arena in Beijing, China.

Blaydes (10-1, 1 NC) and Ngannou (11-3) first went to war back in 2016 with “The Predator” scoring a second-round technical knockout (TKO) by way of nasty eye. That was the last time the red-hot “Razor” tasted defeat, winning five of his next six with one “no contest.”

As for Ngannou, he seems to be going in reverse, having dropped his last two bouts, including his UFC 220 shellacking at the hands of former champion Stipe Miocic. The Cameroonian followed that up with a horrendous effort against Derrick Lewis at UFC 226, which also resulted in a unanimous decision defeat.
